The british explorer ben saunders prepares to make the first solo, unsupported crossing of antarctica after his friend died making the same attempt last year. And england beat brazil in the world cup semi final its the under 17s and a hat trick from Rhian Brewster sends the favourites crashing out. The uks economy grew slightly more than predicted in the three months to september increasing the likelihood that the bank of england will increase Interest Rates next week. According to the initial assessment by the office for National Statistics the economy expanded by 0. 4 with strong performances in the services and manufacturing industries. The construction sector, however, continued to perform poorly. Our economics correspondent andy verity has the details. This Cardboard Box maker in leamington is in one segment of the economy that is now growing more quickly than it did ten years ago. Manufacturing. The orders have been coming in fast enough that it is hitting obstacles to further growth, like finding enough staff and materials to meet those orders. That is when the economists think inflation can become a risk. But growth, compared to last year, has slowed down. Last year we had double digit growth. We had a fantastic year last year. This year, we still have growth but organic growth from existing accounts. And we have been lucky enough to win some new business. But not on the scale of last year. Our sales team have been distracted in negotiations, price increases and things like that. So this year is not quite as good, but still very positive. Construction was easily the worst performing sector of the economy. Its shrunk now for six months, that is technically a recession. And in the last quarter it was down by 0. 7 , that is its worst performance in five years. It was much better with industrial production, that was up by 1. 0 . Mainly because of carmaking and other manufacturing activities. Services grew by 0. 4 . That is better than expected, but not as good as it was back in the boom days. The troubles of the Construction Industry were more than offset by other industries doing better than expected. Including Business Services like Information Technology and finance. It is a solid performance by the uk economy in the third quarter, and it has outperformed Market Expectations as the uk economy has done overall since the referendum. And what it shows is the underlying fundamental strength of this economy. Oecd, imf, obr, all those independent forecasters have said growth is pulling back, wages stagnating. But more importantly, productivity is stagnating. So we are falling behind our competitors. In this budget that is coming up, it has got to change direction. On the money markets, the betting is that Interest Rates are 80 likely to rise next week. But not everyone thinks that they should go up. It is a difficult one to call. I think on the one hand you have got inflation, which is at the higher level than mpc members are comfortable with. But the performance of the economy is not exactly firing on all cylinders. I think some of the communications from the bank recently would indicate a majority will see this as a green light to press ahead with a quarter point increase next week. If rates do rise a week tomorrow, only a minority of the population will face higher costs, as only a minority have a mortgage, and many of them have fixed rates. If the official rate goes up as expected to 0. 5 , it will still be lower than it has been for most of the last 300 years. Andy verity, bbc news. Joining me now is the dr linda yueh, from the London Business school. Lets assess these figures. Thank you forjoining us. Philip hammond saying its a solid performance, how do you see at . Bigot in line with what growth has been for the First Six Months of the year. An easy way to think about it is that for the full year, it means that the Economy Todayis full year, it means that the Economy Today is 1. 5 larger than last year. Its not a bad performance if we can grow around 30 great. It seems to be pretty solid, but you saw there are some optimistic and pessimistic views. I. 5 some optimistic and pessimistic views. 1. 5 is slower than most of the other major economies, but it is still a pretty solid performance. These growth figures nowadays are tied up in politics. People wonder whether they are better or worse because of brexit. You have to realise that brexit reavie split the country. For those who wanted to remain, they will see quite a bit of negative in this 1. 5 year growth wea ker negative in this 1. 5 year growth weaker than the other g 7 because brexit is starting and inflation is high because sterling came down in value after the referendum. Those who are far brexit have a different view. They will see that last year was the Fastest Growing economy in the g7, was the Fastest Growing economy in the g 7, so this year you expect a bit of a slowdown. They would say not the a lot of signs that businesses have been put off by the brexit vote. I think the next economic evidence, its selective what you pick sometimes. I think that reflect the fact that brexit is so that reflect the fact that brexit is so polarising for most people in the country. Do you agree with the a nalysts country. Do you agree with the analysts who think that these figures mean an Interest Rates hike next week is more likely . figures mean an Interest Rates hike next week is more likely . I think it makes it a bit more likely, but the bank of england is supposed to target inflation. If you look at inflation, the governor has said it will actually go above 3 before it stops rising. That is a massive squeeze on most peoples living standards. For those reasons, squeeze on most peoples living standards. Forthose reasons, i would say the bank of looks like poised to raise rates. The real indicator of where they are going to headis indicator of where they are going to head is what happens to labour costs forfirms. Head is what happens to labour costs for firms. That underlying head is what happens to labour costs forfirms. That underlying costs, that has risen strongly by 2. 4 in the latest figures. What is that telling you . The latest figures. What is that telling you . That the latest figures. What is that telling you . That firms are paying a higher cost than 2 . All of that points to. Interests shouldnt be at rock bottom, but what is going to law them back is that they are worried about brexit. At the moment we are still in the Single Market and the customs union, is the bank of england will be thinking, what if we end up out of that and we raised the rates now and the economy crashes . They are always ready on the basis that if they raise rates they will have to cut them again and i think that is what will cause them to hesitate. We will be watching that carefully. Thank you for your analysis. The brexit secretary has said that parliament might not get a vote on any brexit deal until after the uk leaves the eu. David davis told a committee of mps that he hopes to get an agreement finalised with the European Commission by the time the uk leaves in 2019, but ratification could happen after that date. 0ur Political Correspondent ben wright reports. Building up to brexit. As we head towards our departure from the eu in 2019, parliament is scrutinising the governments strategy. It will have to vote on the terms of the exit deal ministers are negotiating. But today the brexit secretary said that may have to happen after the uk has left. The undertaken that we have given. It could be after march 2019 . It could be. It depends when it concludes. The vote of the Uk Parliament could be after march 2019 . Yes, it could be. David davies says negotiations could go to the wire. There is a clock ticking on their talks and deadlines to hit. It is no secret that the way the union makes its decisions tends to be at the 11th minute, etc. 59th minute of the 11th hour and so on. That is what i would expect to happen here. We are under pressure. Very exciting for people watching. He also spelt out the governments ambition not to spell out the terms of divorce from the eu, but to negotiate a whole new trade deal. What we are aiming for is the conclusion of negotiations on all fronts on the grounds that nothing has been agreed by march 2019. The eu negotiators have said a trade deal with the uk could take years to complete. Both sides playing high sta kes political poker. David davis also said the government hopes to get the crux of a two year transition agreement nailed down with the eu by the start of next year. Something businesses are demanding more loudly every week. In the commons afterwards, theresa may was pressed by mps on the role parliament will have in agreeing the final brexit deal. Can the Prime Minister explain how it is possible to have a meaningful vote on something that has already ta ken place . I am confident because it is in the interest on both sides, there will be ratification by other parliaments and other parliaments that we will be able to achieve that negotiation in time for this parliament to have the vote we commissioned. 0ne mp shouted shambles. The government is confident but there is clearly uncertainty about the course brexit will take. Ben wright, westminster. 0ur chief Political Correspondent vicki young is in westminster for us now. David davis raised the few eyebrows thereby suggesting the vote might be after the event, but the Brexit Department have now clarified what he said. That is right. We are certainly any period here where uncertainty is the watch word. Whatever side of the debates people we re whatever side of the debates people were on minikin to the referendum, when it comes to brexit, no one here can predict what is going to happen, partly because this is a negotiation with another team and you cannot control the outcome of all of those possibilities. I think that is how david davis got into all of this today. He was asked a hypothetical question, you decided to answer it, pointing out how the eu sometimes operates when these deals are done at the very last minute and therefore you could end up with this vote after we have left. That has caused outrage amongst some labour mps because they want to be able to send the Government Back to the negotiating table if it comes back with a no deal scenario or a deal it doesnt like. They feel that after we have left, they dont have the same amount of cloud. This was the reaction from labours brexit spokesman. In none of my conversations, either in this country, in any other eu country or in brussels, has it been suggested that ratification can come after the expiry of article 50. So i really dont know the base upon which the secretary of state was saying what he said if he said that this morning. What is envisaged in the European Parliament is that it will be put before the European Parliament before march 2019. Everybody is saying that will probably be in about october, november 2018. And when we were debating this in the house, whether we should have a vote, i was very keen to extract from david davis the undertaking that our vote would be before the European Parliament and the wording that both he and the Prime Minister had used, to the best of my recollection, is that it is intended that the vote in our parliament will be before the European Parliament. I cannot. I cannot see how that can be after article 50 has expired. I cant really. Im struggling to make sense of what he said this morning, to be honest. And it does seem that the department, the spokesperson for david davis himself, seems to agree, actually. They put out a statement trying to clarify the position, saying that it is in fact the governments expectation and intention that the deal will be done before the vote in the European Parliament, and therefore before we leave. They explain the comments by saying he was talking about a hypothetical scenario. They also point towards the eu negotiators aim is to get the trade deal sorted out by october 2018 and the Spokesman Says that is our aim as well. I have just spoken to ken clarke, you could call him the conservative remainder, he says he doesnt think a deal could be done by 2019. He thinks we would go into a town edition period and the deal would be done then. He is quite relaxed and isnt bothered as long as it gets its say at some point. Hypothetical scenarios mean that people can have all sorts of opinions. Think very much indeed. This is bbc news at 5 00. The headlines the british economy grew more than expected paving the way for a rise in Interest Rates next week. The brexit secretary says parliament will get a vote on brexit before the uk leaves the eu, despite this morning implying it may not. I will be back with more noble street at around 530. More on those stories at 5 30pm. The row between President Trump and some senior members of his own Party Continues to escalate. Senators bob cork and jeff flake, who are both standing down next year, have accused mr trump of debasing america. Within the last few hours, jeff flake has been back on national tv in the us, urging other senators to follow his lead in calling out the president. We have a responsibility as elected officials to speak out. Some of what we have seen fit into that category. Do you think you can change the president . I think all of us have been waiting for a nine month productivity occurs towards more appropriate behaviour and stability. We havent seen it and i think its time that we stand up and be a little more forceful. Joining me now from washington is our correspondent, jane 0brien. Some pretty tough words for President Trump from both the senators. How worried will he be . dont think you will be worried at all, because he has been tweeting about them again and saying that they are unelectable and thats the reason. This is personal. He doesnt really care. This notion that you are going to see this forcing a change in the way President Trump behavesis change in the way President Trump behaves is erroneous, because it hasnt happened so far, i dont think its going to happen now. I think its going to happen now. I think the other important thing is that we are not seeing a soon army of republican senators following suit. Ive been watching the American Networks all morning and a progression of senior senators have come on to say they stand by him. They are catching this in terms of a personal dispute. Its not good for the party, it shows disunity. Ultimately, he is the president and in the words of one senator, its in the interests of every american to see him succeed, because if President Trump succeeds then america succeeds. The view in washington than that these two senators, whatever their thing, they are not representative of republicans on capitol hill . They might be, but they are certainly not representative of other republicans who may be saying things in private, but at this point are not willing to say them in public. I think thats the dilemma that a lot of them face. As we have noted, jeff flake and bob cork are not seeking the election. Many of the other senators are and they clearly are not at the point where they want to encourage the expected raft of President Trump and his base if they are seeking the election in the midtown is ought in 2020. They dont want an open confrontation at this stage with President Trump. Frankly, having seen President Trump. Frankly, having seen the way he treats people on twitter, you can blame them . Thank you. A woman whose husband is accused of trying to murder her, has told the court she lied to police about her husbands actions to get her own back after she had learnt of his deceit. In court, victoria cilliers spoke of her love for parachuting. Saying it became an obsession, an addiction, not dissimilarto saying it became an obsession, an addiction, not dissimilar to drugs. I spoke about it a lot with my husband. He showed an interest, learned about parachute packing from me. The prosecution claim her husband savages his waves package in 2015. Leading to both their parachutes failing to open. The couple were married four years earlier and lived in wiltshire. But she told the court today about their marital problems. Cracks were starting to show, she said. I was aware he was having an affair. It was an acumulation. Im intelligent, i knew what was going on, only so much you can put up with. I despised him at that point, easier not having him around. Later she added, i was panicking because i was expecting a baby. I didnt want to leave just then, i was getting in the way, i was miserable. I was threatening suicide. The prosecutor asked her, did you mean it . Mrs cilliers replied, im not sure. Later, mrs cilliers said she had lied to police about her husbands actions to get her own back after she had learned of what she called his lies and deceit. Just pick up on some of those themes we heard there in the report, about her marriage, it has been alleged, reported in court, that her husband was having two affairs and that he hoped to claim on his ways Life Insurance. She said that their marriage was in trouble by november 20 1a. She said that she is respected he was having an affairand that that she is respected he was having an affair and that she came to despise him and threatened suicide. About these lies that she admitted she told police, again we have heard in court that her husband took his ways parachute into a toilet cubicle and it is alleged that at that time he tampered with it. Initially, she told police that he was there for a couple of minutes then Cheadle Police that he was there for five minutes. Then Cheadle Police that he was there forfive minutes. Thank you, andy. Fats domino, one of the pioneers of rock and roll, has died at the age of 89. Born antoine domino in new orleans, he began his career as a pianist in the citys bars. He became one of the first black artists to regularly feature in the white charts. Nick higham looks back at his life. One day youll cry and i wont come back to you just you wait and see. Antoine fats domino learned his piano playing in the bars of new orleans, where he was spotted working for 3 a week by the record producer dave bartholomew. Together, they turned his rolling rhythm and blues style, with its rich jazz and latin roots, into something far more popular and conquered the 50s pop charts. Rhythm and blues would only sell at the time maybe 100,000 records. But we found the guys was buying pop, they were selling like a million, so we crossed over and we went to aint that a shame, and we never looked back. He was one of the first black artists to top the white dominated chart and see his songs released on mainstream labels. His friendly, polished style delighted white audiences, though in britain rock and roll was blamed for teenage delinquency. Ive found my thrill 0n Blueberry Hill. Blueberry hill was one of more than 30 top a0 hits, though the one he didnt write himself. He made millions and gambled much of it away but went on playing into old age. When Hurricane Katrina hit his hometown in 2005, he chose to stay at home and was rumoured dead. Later, there was a visit from George W Bush to replace his National Arts medal, lost in the floods and looting. As for his music, that remained as appealing and infectious as ever. With me now is the jazz historian and radio 3 presenter alyn shipton. You were just telling me, you you werejust telling me, you know some of his band. Give us your perspective on fats domino, how influential was he in music . Perspective on fats domino, how influentialwas he in music . He perspective on fats domino, how influential was he in music . He came along in 19117 and what he did at that point was to transform the whole idea of what new Orleans Music was about. Up until then, people but it was traditional jazz. Was about. Up until then, people but it was traditionaljazz. That was about. Up until then, people but it was traditional jazz. That spread all over the world. Fats domino came along and redefined what new 0rleans music was. In the process, led to rhythm and blues and ultimately rock and roll. He set the path for two things, a local revolution that allowed people like the meters and doctorjohn to have careers, but equally he did a lot to keep the citys music in the perspective of people who loved music all over the world. Suddenly, new orleans didnt just mean traditionaljazz, louis armstrong, it meant someone who was the fat man in his own words and songs like walking to neuro leans did an awful lot to bring the place to the public. It was important in modern music . He didnt want to leave the city, so even when he was famous he could have gone it anywhere in the United States and i met other musicians of his generation who bought mansions or settled in long island. He didnt do that. He was quite a character locally. The guys who are used to meet who had been in the band all worked in the same kind of area. The trumpet player who wrote a lot of his hits with him and a man i adore it smokyjohnson was the bedrock of that beat. He and the bass player supported fats dominos playing. That relaxed style that was still hot at the time. You spoke about how he did not want to leave neuro lea ns. He did not want to leave neuro leans. During her and he did not want to leave neuro leans. During herand came he did not want to leave neuro leans. During her and came katrina, he was dead. Some graffiti artists wrote rip fats domino on his house. He had been rescued by a helicopter. Remarkably, because it was him, in an area still quite devastated. I was looking at the ninth walk last year, bits of it have not been rebuilt. His house and office was beautifully restored. We saw george bush going to give him back the medal. It was great and poignant that his own homestead in the middle of it was fully restored. When we look back at the hall of fame of american music, how would he be remembered . What is his place in american musical history compared to elvis and all the other greats . Because he predated them, he set the bedrock going. He repaid the debt with a hacked version of lady madonna which went into detroit in 1968. He was somebody who really set the scene for what was going to happen in the 60s. If he hadnt come along in the 40s and prepared america and europe, i doubt very much that the british invasion or any of those things that happened in the 60s would have taken the cause that they did. Fascinating. Thank you very much for your memory is there of the great fats domino who has died at the age of 89. We are going to pose now and have a look at the weather. The brexit secretary, david davis, has said Parliament May not get to vote on any deal with the European Union until after the uk has left. Mr davis told mps it was possible talks with brussels wouldnt conclude untiljust before the uks withdrawal, in march 2019. Labour responded by saying that parliaments vote on brexit wouldnt be meaningful if it happened after britains departure. Since then, we have had clarification from the Brexit Department saying the governments view is there would be a vote in parliament before britain leaves the eu, despite what mr davies said earlier on. With me now from central lobby in the houses of parliament is the former conservative cabinet minister nicky morgan. Thank you very much for being with us. Thank you very much for being with us. So a little bit of confusion, really, about when parliament will get a vote on brexit. Can you clarify what is going on with your government . I think there had been no confusion at all because ministers, including the Prime Minister, have been very clear that we we re minister, have been very clear that we were going to get a say on a deal and we were going to have that before the European Parliament did andi before the European Parliament did and i think it has been generally agreed that the Eu Parliament and other Member States parliaments will need to start voting in autumn 2018. It is unfair because david davies was and throwing a hypothetical question in front of the committee this morning and that is what the Prime Minister was talking about. Nonetheless, he is the man in charge, he is the brexit secretary and he said it was possible but the vote would be afterwards and not before. All things are possible, thatis before. All things are possible, that is the extraordinary thing about brexit, nobody has ever done this before, or people on all sides are inching their way forward to a negotiation and a deal and a transition period and to a vote, and, you know, many people voted to leave the European Union because of this argument about taking control back. Control has to come back to this Sovereign Parliament and that means, as ministers have recognised right the way from discussing article 50 this year, that it is going to be this parliament that has a say and has a meaningful vote on the final deal that is struck and i think that is what the clarification today said. I am still confused, you said all things are possible so do you think it is possible the vote will have to be after we leave . dont, because i dont think itll happen at all. I think there will be a deal, as the Prime Minister said at Prime Ministers questions. She has been very clear that this parliament will get a vote before the Eu Parliament does and that is quite right and mps want to have a say on behalf of their constituents while recognising the vote that happened in june 20 while recognising the vote that happened injune 2016. The trouble is if we are going to have news stories about hypotheticals and nuances, we will not get the meat of theissue, nuances, we will not get the meat of the issue, which is what is going to happen to our economy, the rights of eu citizens, to people who are living here depending on the eu for their business and their livelihoods and family security. That is the important thing and that is what mps wa nt to important thing and that is what mps want to have a say on. The other thing people are confused about is whether the government is saying there could be no deal, because you, i think there could be no deal, because you, ithinki there could be no deal, because you, i think i am right in saying, have campaigned against threatening a no deal scenario. Where do you stand on that now . I understand that in any negotiation, the parties will want to keep all options open but i have been very clear and will continue to argue that a no deal, as in the literally the whole thing falling apartand literally the whole thing falling apart and both sides walking away from having any future relationship with each other, would be a very, very bad thing. No deal is a bad deal. This afternoon, we have heard evidence that the Treasury Select Committee of some of the chaos from the disorderly brexit and what it would mean, and nobody wants that. People who argue to leave the eu in the Campaign Said that is not what they wanted and the Prime Minister has been clear she wants there to be a deal, as had david davies davis love david davies. All mps on all sides of the argument want to get the best deal while recognising relieving the European Union. Nicky morgan, thank you for your time. Just want to show you the latest pictures from catalonia coming into us pictures from catalonia coming into us live here. Although the snapchat stem cells we re although the snapchat stem cells were deleted in 2a hours, these images were kept, mentioning two products. The asa ruled her snapchat story was an advert, the first case of its kind involving snapchat. Story was an advert, the first case of its kind involving snapchatm brands do a deal with celebrities or social influences, where they pay them and insist they promote positive messages about the brand, evenif positive messages about the brand, even if those messages are put in the words of the celebrity or social influence, the product of that, the tweet or the post, results from that, it is an ad and needs to be properly labelled. The Company Began in 2012 and sends photos that vanish in seconds. It has 100 million users daily and most of them are between the ages of 13 and 24. Marnie simpson isnt the only one on social media to be caught out. It happened to make up another shake beauty on instagram, promoting tea to get a flat tummy. 0n instagram, promoting tea to get a flat tummy. On twitter, presenter aj mention her favourite snack. Flat tummy. On twitter, presenter aj mention herfavourite snack. 0dudu mention herfavourite snack. The company tried to defend the promotions but the asa does not have the power to impose fines itself but hopes the publicity acts as a deterrent. Lets talk about this now with craig jones, director of communications at the advertising standards at the rate standards authority. Advertising standards authority. Tell us about this ruling. It is the first of its kind on snapchat, which is a new platform of social Media Advertising and websites advertising on companys downsides are a growing part of what we do and the key thing here is the celebrities are followed because people are interested in their original opinions. If what they are saying is controlled by an advertiser or a brand and they have taken money or entered into a transaction to say it, that is not their original opinion, that it must be very hard to monitor. Snapchat particularly, these things disappear so particularly, these things disappear so quickly and there is an avalanche of stuff out there, not just so quickly and there is an avalanche of stuff out there, notjust on snapchat but on social media, how on earth do you monitor all this stuff . Consumers can bring these things does and sometimes it only takes one complaint to get an advert banned. We have officers who are proactively monitoring this kind of thing. One of the encouraging things is that some influences are telling us about their peers, their colleagues, falling short of standards. All they have to do is put a hashtag and then add sign next to one of these posts and that is enough to show it is a commercial, but some are falling short and we are embedding this message around the community of influences. We are not happy with the wages of the moment but they are going in the right direction. So it is really just about going in the right direction. So it is reallyjust about people being honest . It is reallyjust, is a good way of doing it and we are talking to the people who represent these celebrities about the rules and it is good for the celebrities themselves, it is about the trust in followers and the influence. If people are being advertised it without their knowledge, they feel taken for granted so to maintain that relationship of trust, celebrities have to do better and thatis celebrities have to do better and that is what the ruling is about. Celebrities have to do better and that is what the ruling is aboutm is harderfor you at that is what the ruling is aboutm is harder for you at the Advertising Standards Authority, you must ream of the old days when it was just adverts on telly and magazine and newspaper adverts. Now, there is so much social media. Yes, it is the new frontier of what we are doing, abbotsford companies and websites on social media now accounts for half of the asas work. Some people dont know we regulate ads in those spaces and we do. If people want to bring a complaint to us, they can do so and sometimes, and ad is band of the back of those complaints and people do have a lot of power online. Greg james, from the asa, thank you. Youre watching bbc news, the latest headlines. The british economy grew more than expected, paving the way for a rise in Interest Rates next week. The brexit secretary says parliament will get a vote on brexit before the uk leads the eu, despite this morning implying it may not. And fats domino, one of the pioneers of rock and roll, has died at the age of 89. A quick look at the market numbers for you, there they are. Labour has suspended and launched in investigation into the behaviour of mpjared 0mara, following comments he made online. Mr 0mara, the mp for sheffield hallam, has apologised for misogynistic and homophobic comments he posted 15 years ago but hes also been accused of verbally assaulting a woman in his constituency earlier this year. Joining me now from our westminster studio is justin madders, labour mp for Ellesmere Port neston. Thank you very much indeed for being with us. So has the labour party done the right thing, in your view . Yes, i think in the end of the weight of allegations and the pattern that was developing left us ina pattern that was developing left us in a position where an investigation needs to be conducted. It is important to note that a number of the allegations were from a considerable time ago and the most recent allegation is disputed, but there is certainly enough there to warrant this course of action. So when you read exactly what was alleged to have been said, were you shocked . I was, i find alleged to have been said, were you shocked . Iwas, ifind those alleged to have been said, were you shocked . I was, i find those views incompatible with being a member of the labour party. I accept that he explain to the Parliamentary Party on monday that he had been on a personal journey. It on monday that he had been on a personaljourney. It does seem that bad journey has got a few bumps on the road and we will have to wait and see what he says about the more recent allegations and it is clearly a lesson for aspiring politicians that they need to be very thoughtful about what they write on the internet before committing to the keyboard. That is the lesson, isnt it . You think that applies to all mps or particularly labour mps . think it applies to everyone in all walks of life, actually. There are certainly a pattern developing now where employers will look at the persons online history, contributions, to see what sort of person they are, whether they hold views which might cause difficulty in particular workplace, might actually put the employer at risk of legal challenge and there is a whole generation of people growing up now and their lives are being out online, so there has certainly got to bea online, so there has certainly got to be a lot more thought about what people commit to the keyboard. People will say you should be accountable for what you have written. Yes, he was in his 20s when he wrote this but it wasnt like he was a child. Im not saying per minute he shouldnt be accountable for but what i am saying is what you have said or thought 15 years ago might not be applicable now and i think it is right in those circumstances that people have the opportunity to explain themselves and if their views have changed, then they should be given the opportunity to explain that. Clearly what has happened here is there has been a pattern over a period of time and some more recent incidents that we know at this stage are not accepted we know at this stage are not a cce pted by we know at this stage are not accepted by him. Thank you for your time. Lets get a bit more now on the sad news of the death of fats domino, one of the early pioneers of rock and roll, who has died at the age of 89. On the line is pauljones, presenter of the blue shirt on bbc radio 4 presenter of the blue shirt on bbc radio4and presenter of the blue shirt on bbc radio 4 and also singer in manfred mann. Thank you for being with us, give a short assessment of the significance in modern music, of rock and roll and blues and jazz, of fats domino. Well, very few bands and people who followed him on didnt do at least some of his songs. For example, john lennon did eight that a shame on his album rock and roll, his tribute to those who influenced him. And in 2007, an album came out that was named after one of fats dominos hits, called going home and the list of artists is more impressive than many you can think, john lennon, tom petty, willie nelson, norah jones, think, john lennon, tom petty, willie nelson, norahjones, neil young, paul mccartney, it is absolutely amazing, all those people wa nted absolutely amazing, all those people wanted to pay tribute fats domino. We were hearing earlier on that in some ways, he paved the way wafer the musical revolution in the 60s. Paved the way for. There were people like bo diddley and chuck berry andjimmy people like bo diddley and chuck berry and jimmy reed who will more often covered by the bands in the 60s who call themselves r b bands, but fats, the significant thing about fats from the point of view of me, especially as a presenter of a blues programme, he was actually more successful in terms of american success in the r b charts than any of them. In fact, if you could put together chuck berry, Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis and the three of them couldnt come up with the same number of hits that fats domino had in the r b charts. And of course, new in the r b charts. And of course, n ew 0 rlea ns in the r b charts. And of course, new orleans has always been so crucial to modern music, to american music, and he was a real son of new 0 rlea ns, music, and he was a real son of new 0rleans, wasnt music, and he was a real son of new 0rlea ns, wasnt he, music, and he was a real son of new 0rleans, wasnt he, he didnt want to leave when Hurricane Katrina came along, he was there throughout. Absolutely amazing person in that respect, yes. He was so new orleans. He got invited to the white house one time and he said i couldnt be bothered, it was too far from new 0 rlea ns. Bothered, it was too far from new 0rleans. And in any case, there is nothing he liked eating up there and yes, he disappeared and people thought he had been killed in Hurricane Katrina and he hadnt. He lived in this amazing mansion in the ninth ford, which is predominantly working class in new orleans and it got wrecked and he wasnt there, so the assumption that he had died was reasonable but he turned up and in fa ct was reasonable but he turned up and in fact was rescued, very much rescued, and everybody was mightily relieved. Thank you so much for being with us, pauljones, presenter of the blues show on radio 2, thank you your memories of fats domino. The british explorer ben saunders is aiming to complete a world first a solo, unaided crossing of antarctica. Hes following in the footsteps of his friend Henry Worsley, who died making the attempt last year. 0ur correspondent tim muffett went to meet ben saunders, as he made his final preparations to complete the journey that henry began. When youve trekked to the north and south pole, what next . The plan is to make a solo, completely unassisted and unsupported crossing of antarctica on foot. So im walking from one side to the south pole and then carrying on to the opposite side of antarctica. Its never been done before. No one has ever sort of walked under their own human motive power. The motivation for ben saunders is deeply friend. His friend Henry Worsley died last year attempting the same feat. Henry had been to me a good friend for a long time. My initial reaction for a few weeks was that i didnt want anything more to do with antarctica ever again. Itjust seemed too tragic. I started thinking perhaps the best way to honour the friendship and inspiration he gave me would be to finish the job for him. Ben, this looks exhausting. Tell us about the exercises youre having to do. This is a dead lift which uses almost your whole body. So its a strong pulling movement, off the floor with a lot of weight. This is more than twice my body weight. And you have to kind of bulk up with excess fat to last you. Yes, i put on since the summer, ten kilos, 22lbs, about a stone and a half. Some of that is muscle and some of that is deliberately fat. It must be very difficult knowing what happened to henry, that bens going to attempt the same journey. Ben has prepared well. Its hisjob. He spent 17 years doing this so ijust have to trust that he knows what hes doing and hell look after himself. Bens last trip to the south pole saw him complete the route which captain Robert Falcon scott attempted before he died in 1912. But this time, ben will be going past the south pole and onwards, alone. Beautiful skies in antarctica. Lets see what they are doing here, rather beautiful behind you as well. Indeed, this is one of our weather watcher pictures sent to us last night, the Aurora Borealis, pictured there in the north of scotland and indeed, we have seen quite a few of these pictures. This was another one showing the skies there over shetlands, some beautiful colours and there is the chance of catching another glimpse of the Aurora Borealis tonight. Scotland is probably the favoured spot of seeing a glimpse of the Northern Lights but also the far north of england and maybe parts of Northern Ireland as well. Lets take a check on the weather and what has been going on. Most of us have had some sunshine but towards the english channel, you can see a band of thick cloud, the weather front wiggling around a rover the uk over recent days. Things are moving back to normal cloud rise and rather murky across the isles of scilly and mist and fog patches forming right now, that is a sign of things to come as a zone of moisture continues to work northwards. 0vernight, some dens patches of fog around. The threat of a few spots of rain. Clear skies further north and will keep the north south divide the weather tomorrow. England and wales having a much cloudy day compared with today and the cloud into the afternoon capable of bringing a few spots. The fog will turn to lift, turning a bit brighter and the best of the sunshine across the far north of england and scotland and parts of Northern Ireland, where they say will be similar to today, a few showers again across the far north west. Looking at the pictures for thursday night, an area of High Pressure building, the winds will turn to a westerly direction which will blow the weather front clear of the uk and friday, although they could be a few fog patches in Northern Ireland, should be a decent day. Most of us will see some sunshine, highs between 12 and 15 degrees but then we will see more changes as we head into the weekend. An area of High Pressure dressed to the west of the British Isles and we roaring progressively colder rare in the north of the uk but nationwide, temperatures falling over the weekend. 0n temperatures falling over the weekend. On saturday, quite a lot of cloud and a win today but sunday, thatis cloud and a win today but sunday, that is when the cold air arrives. Temperatures in edinburgh and aberdeenjust 9 degrees temperatures in edinburgh and aberdeen just 9 degrees but a strong wind making it feel even colder. Further southwards, across the london area, temperatures dropping back to 14 degrees. There remind todayit back to 14 degrees. There remind today it has been 19 so a 5 degrees drop in temperatures on the way but actually coming back down to normal for the time of year, quite a lot colder compared with the weather we have had over recent days. That is the forecast. Theres a boost for the chancellor ahead of the budget as the uk economy grows faster than expected. Growth was up 0. 4 in the three months to september, with manufacturing doing well. Although other sectors, like construction, continue to lag, Philip Hammond says the overall picture is of a resilient economy. Its outperformed Market Expectations as the uk economy has done overall since the referendum last year and what it shows is the underlying fundamental strength of this economy. So with more growth, could there be a rise in Interest Rates next month . Also on the programme.
