London. And eight oclock in the morning in tokyo, where shinzo abe has declared victory after the general election. His liberal Democratic Party and its Junior Coalition partner are forecast to secure 310 of the a65 seats in japans lower house of parliament. Mrabe is on japans lower house of parliament. Mr abe is on course to become japans longest serving post war Prime Minister. Rupert Wingfield Hayes has the latest from tokyo, his report contains flash photography. Shinzo abe took a gamble and it has paid off. This summer the japanese Prime Ministers Approval Rating plunged to less than 30 . Now he has won a big victory and four more years in power. This victory makes mr abe japans most successful post war politician. He was assisted to his win by typhoon lan, that helped keep nearly half of japanese voters at home. But by far the biggest help was division and confidence in japans opposition parties. Last month this woman, the popular governor of tokyo, vowed to take on mr abe at the polls. But come election day, she was at a conference in paris. Mr abe claims he called the election because of the threat from north korea, who said he needed a mandate from the japanese people to get tough on pyongyang and its missile programme. Translation i believe this election was firstly about the korean threat. You could say the north korean threat was the biggest ever. But the issue closer to his heart is changing the constitution. Japan has a modern military. But for over 70 years it has not fired a single shot in anger. Article 9 of the constitution states japan will forever renounce war and the use of force to Settle International disputes. Mr abe and his supporters considered those words a humiliation, forced on japan by the american victors. He now has the best chance he will ever get to remove them. In other news, the us secretary of state is demanding that iranian backed militias fighting the Islamic State group in iraq should disband. Rex tillerson was speaking in saudi arabia, he is on a tour of gulf countries and he praised an agreement to coordinate the fight against the militants in rebuilding iraqi territory. Iranian militias in iraqi territory. Iranian militias in iraq now that the fight against stylish and isis is coming to a close, those militias need to go home and any foreign fighters in iraq need to go home. And allow the iraqi people to regain control of areas that have been overtaken by isis and stylish that have been liberated, i love the iraqi people to rebuild their lives with the help of their neighbours. I think that agreement that has been put in place between the kingdom of saudi arabia and iraq is a crucial element to assisting the iraqi people to do so. Also the sour, south korea posit president says his government will continue to phase out nuclear generated electricity, despite a Public Opinion poll to the contrary. In the past couple of hours Lewis Hamilton has moved one step closer to securing a fourth world driver title by winning the us formula one grand prix in texas. He has a 66 point lead over sebastian vettel, who finished just behind him with three races left. There is more later. Returning to the main story and that is of japans later. Returning to the main story and that is ofjapans Prime Minister, who appears to have won a crushing victory in the snap general election. An associate professor at to go Home University gave his reaction. I was not surprised at all, in this election there is only one thing you must remember. Dont worry about the details, only one thing is important. Three weeks before the election, the party was split in half, apparently when you are the opponent split into half, you are in a better position and you can win by default. Is that the biggest factor in this elections the fact there was a weak opposition . What about the concerns over north korean belligerence . The issue of north korea, Foreign Policy issue of north korea, Foreign Policy is interesting because suddenly the Prime Minister was emphasising his Foreign Policy. However, Foreign Policy was not an issue, nobody talked about his Foreign Policy, in particular, the Opposition Party was not emphasising or talking about Foreign Policy because japanese people in general are in support of the Prime Ministers Foreign Policy. Especially his tough confrontational approach towards north korea. Especially his tough confrontational approach towards north koream especially his tough confrontational approach towards north korea. It is something that shinzo abe has been strong to push, that he will take a strong to push, that he will take a strong line with north korea. Does this vote give him a stronger hand in dealing with north korea and what about relations with the us . Us japan relations have been stronger for a few years. This is ok. The problem is, suddenly and north korea he would continue with his confrontational approach, which may backfire on japan, which confrontational approach, which may backfire onjapan, which is dangerous but japanese people to support this anyway and the result of the election does look like the japanese people endorsed the Prime Ministers Foreign Policy. So there will be no big change injapanese Foreign Policy. We were speaking earlier. Tension on the Korean Peninsula remains high following the recent nuclear test and missile launchers from north korea. People in south korea britain can to get on with their daily lives, despite the threat that lies just across the border. Mark lowen has been gauging reaction. You are watching newsday on the bbc. And finally the Straits Times says japan voters have strengthened mr abes hand, but it also points to the latest surveys which show that even now more japanese disapprove of mr abe rather than support him. That brings you up to date. The Spanish Government has rejected accusations from the regional authorities in catalonia that its carried out a coup by moving to impose direct control in the wake of the disputed independence referendum. Catalans opposed to independence have been protesting in barcelona, from where tom burridge reports. This scene, hard to imagine just a few weeks ago. Maybe 200 people outside a military barracks in barcelona. Support for spains Civil Guard Police and the army inside. The Catalan Leader has disobeyed the Spanish Government. These people support the move my madrid to scrap catalonias devolved government and ta ke catalonias devolved government and take control. They want independence and i tried to talk to them but they are like a wall. Two sides, two visions of a catalan crisis, neither listening to the other. The atmosphere today in catalonia is febrile. People are outside a military barracks calling for catalan politicians to be arrested, and calling for action to be taken against catalonias public radio and tv. Madrid accuses catalan public tv of propaganda, which spanish officials claim has fuelled the Pro Independence cause. In a highly controversial move, madrid might try to exert control over their programmes. I think it would be terrible, because we are doing ourjob, we are journalists, we are here to explain the things that happen here in catalonia, in spain and in the world. And i think that they are violating one of the principal rights of freedom of speech. And the Spanish State has jailed susannas husband, the leader of a prominent organisation accused of inciting disorder during a demonstration, a charge he, his family and supporters strenuously denied. Translation he is a political prisoner. He is not a politician but he is in jailfor defending his ideas. The Spanish Government denies that susannas husband and another activist who has been refused bail as well are political prisoners. But she has no confidence they will get a fair trial, when the Political Climate in spain is as it is today. An eight year study involving over 250 scientists has concluded that all sea life around the world will be affected by c02 all sea life around the world will be affected by co2 emissions. The report suggests the number of cord could fall to a quarter of current levels and infant Sea Creatures will be particularly harmed. These bubbles contain natural co2 from an underwater volcano in papua new guinea. Few Sea Creatures can live here because the co2 has made me about what more acidic. Swim away from those vents and what a difference. The chemistry of the sea returns to normal. And wonderful reef life can thrive. But Industrial Society is churning out co2 on a massive scale. And the gas is being observed in to around the world. Making it all more acidic. Todays report warns of major impacts on sea life. This conference of studies but we have been observing globally. This is a problem, acidity is increasing and that is notjust impacting the ecology which we see already but it will have an impact on us already but it will have an impact on us as humans further down the line. Take one fish we love to eat. Cord. The Research Shows baby cod are especially sensitive to more acidic waters. It projects that even if c02 acidic waters. It projects that even if co2 levels rise unchecked, we should expect only a quarter as many cord in the seas. Some species will thrive with the changes, the scientists say, like some seaweed. But the report warns that all sea life will be affected by the disruption of the food web in the seas. The World Health Organisation has announced a u turn over its decision to appoint Robert Mugabe as a goodwill ambassador. Their leader may be proud of his achievements but tellingly he travels abroad for his own health care. In asia, people are getting back to work following the weekend during which i am sure many of you enjoyed a glass of wine or two. And there are more of us doing just that these days. Research shows that the asia pacific wine market is set to register the fastest growth in the world over the next five years or so. That is offsetting weakness in places like western europe. North america and africa. Much of that is being driven by china, where there are some a8 million urban upper middle class drinkers of important wine. And that is thanks to more disposable income in china and easier access to wine itself. To get more, iam easier access to wine itself. To get more, i am joined easier access to wine itself. To get more, iamjoined by easier access to wine itself. To get more, i am joined by the managing editor of Robert Parker wine advocate. Welcome. Most people in asia, unless they have a religious reason or Health Reason to abstain, enjoy wine. What are the trends . Were definitely seeing more people enjoying wine and more wealth is being created and more people are enjoying luxury level wine so that is one of the largest region areas of growth, at the high end of brand luxury wine. But the highend, in china, how fast is consumption wine drinking growing . It has been in double digits for the last five yea rs or double digits for the last five years or so. It is something that is really growing fast and it is something that european and american wineries want to capitalise on and so they are increasingly dedicating time and energy to entering the chinese market. But we know suddenly there is more Wine Production in this part of the world as well, wine is grown in china, india as well and in other places so tell us about these asian produced wines. Can they compete with these old world, new world wines . To this point they dont really compete internationally, they do compete in the domestic market and in fact, china has so many acres of vine yards that they are the second largest country in terms of acreage devoted to wine grapes after spain and sixth largest producer of wine. That is a startling statistic they have grown by leaps and bounds. They wa nt to have grown by leaps and bounds. They want to satisfy the domestic market. On top of that, there is a lot of Foreign Investment within china so you have luxury groups with vineyards on the Tibetan Plateau and they have released their latest wine thatis they have released their latest wine that is quite pricey, 300 euros a bottle. Speaking of price, publications like yours and many other reviewers, you tend to influence the prices of wine. If you get a great score, those prices go up. In asia we have seen lots of records being broken for wine. Bbc people continuing to want to pay these prices . I think it is simple economic law of supply and demand so our ratings dont drive up the prices but the response to those ratings drive up the price. There is more demand, there is a very highly limited supply of these exquisite wines and therefore the prices go up. And as long as wealth continues to bea up. And as long as wealth continues to be a cumulative in this part of the world, and more people are benefiting from the economic engine thatis benefiting from the economic engine that is asia, there is going to be more competition for these wines and the prices will continue to go up. We will be getting ready to pay more for that class thank you for joining us. You have been watching newsday. Before we go, we have these pictures of early snowfall in china.
