A in a statement the chief superintendent said we are pleased that we were able to bring this incident to a peaceful resolution and that there were no injuries. I would like to reassure the Nuneaton Community that the incident is unconnected to any terrorist activity. Nevertheless, for families here a frightening afternoon but now relief that it has been resolved. Our reporter David Crabtree is at the scene. David, the siege is over but police remain on the scene. David, i dont know if you can hear me . He does. Yes, it was about four to five hours ago now since this began to unfold and only in the last half hour people being allowed out of places like the holiday inn where they were taken for their safety. Terrifying for a lot of children who we re terrifying for a lot of children who were taken to this leisure complex. Some were having birthday parties and telling troubling stories of how they tried to keep themself safe. I spoke to one couple who brought their six children here, rob and anna. Now police have given us the good news that this incident is over without anybody being injured, the cordons are being lifted i i have a family with us, rob and annia. You have your six children with you. Yes. Caught up in this, what did you see . What happened to you . We were in the soft play area, next door to the Bowling Alley and there was a lot of raucous and rumours going around and a fair bit of activity and we were all barricading the doors and being told what to do by the staff there, who were very well organised and. Whafrnlts were you barricading the doors with. Tables and chairs because there were iuitiouis tables and chairs because there were rumours of bombs and all sorts of things, it was trying to block everything off and keep everybody safe. We gathered in the middle and out of the back of the building and waited for word on what to do how did you handle this . It must have been terrifying for everybody . Did you handle this . It must have been terrifying for everybody7m was worrying, we were trying to keep all the kids together. We could see all the kids together. We could see a lot of people were getting quite scared and desperate to get on their phones and phone their relatives, but, no, everyone was keeping it altogether and everyone was helping each other out. So it was not a bad atmosphere. Anna, did you manage to keep calm . I tried to keep calm, yes. We didnt know where the safest pa rt yes. We didnt know where the safest part in the soft play would be, so we agreed we would all stay together. We tried to stay by the fire exit at one point but then we heard mention of bombs, so then we decided where we were going to hide if someone came in. So you made a contingency plan. Yes. What was that plan . I said level 2 contingency plan. Yes. What was that plan . I said levelz of contingency plan. Yes. What was that plan . I said level 2 of the soft plain hide. Really . The kids were actually incredibly calm. They were really, really good. Iwas actually incredibly calm. They were really, really good. I was crying a bit, though. You were crying a bit. Were you aware of the seriousness of the situation . I guess you were, if the situation . I guess you were, if the police were keeping you informed . Yeah, we didnt get much from the police, apart from really the soft play staff were telling us what was happening. The problem is, you didnt know whether it was iuitiouis or you didnt know whether it was rumours or whether it was true. We knew there was an armed guy. We didnt know where he was how did you eventually get out of that part of the building . The Police Escorted us out ina the building . The Police Escorted us out in a little while in small groups out of the side of the building. To the holiday inn. Well it was about 6. 35 when we heard about six or seven shots ring out across the Leisure Centre complex here and a few seconds later, about 15 to 20 police stormed the building. They now say that the incident is over, no one was injured, an ambulance did take a couple of people away and a man has been arrested. Police say this was not terror related and they wanted to really press this home to the local community that everything is 110w local community that everything is now safe, a man is in cowes dane they say they would like to thank them for their calm and those people who were locked in various buildings here and managed to get through this ordeal very well. They are now all beginning to go home. Their cars are being released from this cordoned off area but police say they still have a lot to do in terms of the investigation from here on. Very quickly, david, are you learned any more from talking to people at the scene, about the man with the shotgun . A lot of them seem to think he had some kind of professional association with the leisure complex, maybe at the place itself, where he held those two people hostage. We havent had that confirmed yet but we understand that is one part of the police investigation. 0k, David Crabtree, thank you very much. The World Health Organisation has reversed its decision to appoint the zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe as a goodwill ambassador. After a wave of criticism, the head of the who, which is part of the United Nations, said hed listened to the concerns of donor countries and campaigners. Theyd said that mr mugabes record on the zimbabwean economy and health care should have ruled him out. Our Southern Africa correspondent, Andrew Harding reports. He has been in powerfor 37 years, but Zimbabwes PresidentRobert Mugabe held onto his newjob for less than a week. A humiliating blow for the 93 year old. Mr mugabe was selected as a global ambassador for the World Health Organisation by its first african boss who hoped the elder statesman might rally other leaders in the fight against diseases like cancer. But today the who quickly backed down after a fierce international backlash. Under president mugabes long rule, zimbabwes economy and Health System have crumbled. Britain and other western governments have accused him of widespread Human Rights Violations and targeted him with sanctions. There was delight today from a broad range of organisations which had condemned mr mugabes United Nations role as a sickjoke. There was outrage that mugabe could be appointed a goodwill ambassador, especially given the state of Public Health services and access to basic Public Health facilities. Even painkillers in public hospitals. This comes as a relief that the who has seen the light. But mr mugabe is not without support, both inside zimbabwe and around the continent. Today his supporters describe the whos u turn as yet another sign of western meddling in africa. President mugabe has yet to react in person, but few zimbabweans can be surprised about this decision. Their leader may be proud of his achievements but tellingly he travels abroad for his own health care. A senior cabinet minister has told the bbc that the government should consider borrowing more money to invest in building new homes. Speaking on the andrew marr show, the communities secretary sajid javid said up to 300,000 new homes a year are needed a level of construction not seen since the 1960s. Labour criticised the plans for not going far enough. Our Political Correspondent ben wright reports. Everyone knows there is a housing crisis. Politicians have been promising to solve it for years. Now it looks like there will be another building push in the budget next month. The budget will be covering housing, but what i want to do is make sure that we are using everything we have available to deal with this housing crisis, and where that means, for example, that we can sensibly borrow more to invest in the infrastructure that leads to more housing, take advantage of record low interest rates, i think we should consider that. As for how many, sajid david said that up to 300,000 more homes are needed annually, double the number built in england last year. For a family needing space in the south east of england, the housing shortage is a real problem. We have four children, so trying to find something affordable is ridiculous. If we move further north, we could probably afford something at the right size, but logistically it does not work. Britain has mobilised before to tackle its need for homes. In the 1950s, Harold Mcmillan got britain building 300,000 private and Council Houses a year. We need a National Crusade to get homes built. In recent years, the government has made it easier for buyers to borrow their way into Home Ownership but ambitious building targets are hard to hit. I think that you have to work very hard to put in place resources to make that happen and i would be very surprised if we got to 300,000 anywhere in the next ten years. New houses are being built, but prices remain way out of reach for many first time buyers, and there has been an historic political failure to match demand with supply. But in its readiness now to borrow for building, not only is the government moving further away from austerity, it is also fighting on the same political turf as labour. If hot air built new homes, ministers would have fixed the housing crisis by now. Any promise of new investment is welcome but it is actions not words that count and we have seen this government slash spending on new Affordable House building and its now at a 24 year low. So what will be in the next budget box . Today one of the chancellors colleages was either giving a big House Building hint or doing last minute lobbying but if the government borrows on the scale suggested, it will mark a new approach. A scottish man has been sentenced to three months injailfor touching a mans hip in a dubai bar. Jamie harron, whos from stirling, was arrested injuly and charged with public indecency. The International Trade secretary liam fox says the government wont decide how much money it will pay to the European Union after brexit, until it becomes clear what trade agreement the two sides will reach. Dr fox says ministers are still trying to establish what the eu wants. Im saying what we will decide as a number is when we can see the final package. David davis has had discussion was ministers across the european and we have made clear our position and when we have said to them would you simply give a number before you knew what the outcome would be, they say absolutely not. In which case we say so absolutely not. In which case we say so why should we . Absolutely not. In which case we say so why should we . Dr liam fox there. But the shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry says she thinks the uk is heading for no deal. And despite talk of progress at the recent eu summit, the reality is that negotiations on the divorce remain deadlocked. Intransigence is on theresa mays side, because she doesnt have the strength or authority to control her backbenchers, let alone her cabinet, and i think we are heading for no deal, and i think that is a serious threat to britain, and it is not in britains interests for that to happen. We will stop it. Regulators have told several hundred Online Gambling operators to remove casino games which may appeal to children. The move follows claims that operators are using cartoons and characters to encourage children to play. Last year, the industry regulator found 450 thousand children in england and wales were gambling every week. Prison officers in fourjails are to trial the use of parva spray, similar to pepper spray, to defend themselves against aggressive inmates. The ministry ofjustice will also issue more than 5,000 body cameras to officers in england and wales, as well as handcuffs. Violence in prisons rose significantly last year, with assaults on staff reaching record levels. Violence against prison officers is up violence against prison officers is up 34 in the last year. We need to give officers the tools to do their job. We need to pilot it to see how it works. But if a prison officer is attacked, surprisingly, as a last resort, having this could make a difference, then they should have it. The Spanish Foreign minister said today catalans should disregard any instructions from their regional officials as their authority to govern is taken away by madrid. The measures follow catalonias disputed independence referendum earlier this month. Our correspondent bethany bell reports. Another protest in barcelona. This one is pro spanish. It is small. These people are demonstrating in support of the spanish army and the police. It comes a day after the spanish Prime Minister said he would take steps to impose direct rule on catalonia from madrid. The catalonian government are not following the laws. They do what they want. Are not, they represent a small percentage, not all of us. This is why the government has to do what it has to do. The Spanish Foreign minister says the Regional Government will soon lose authority. They will not have any legal authority, it will be a group of rebels trying to impose their own arbitrariness onto the whole people of catalonia. The plan by the Spanish Government is unprecedented. It is the first time that madrid has moved to strip a region of its autonomy and it dramatically escalate this political crisis. Yesterday almost half a million Pro Independence supporters took to the streets of barcelona. With them was the catalan leader. The separatists are defiant. And mr rajoy spat on it. That is not very proper or nice. We think that now the Catalan Government is legitimised to push ahead, if it considers it appropriate and lift that suspension of the declaration of independence. The Pro Independence leaders are now considering their next steps. The Regional Parliament could decide to vote on an unilateral declaration of independence. Catalonia is in a state of uncertainty. Alex, and this happens while youre sleeping, effectively . Yeah, thats the beauty of the internet. I am sitting here right now, and i have probably made a few more dollars since i woke up. That idea and that time of my life was really at turning point. The true value of the Million Dollar homepage was not the money it made me, but actually the relationships that formed as a result. 12 years on, with a string of successful projects behind him, alex has embarked on another, but this time the high flyer is trying to persuade the rest of us to slow down. I was actually working on something to do with meditation and the internet combined, even when i was about 16. It was always in the back of my mind to combine those two interests.
