Sands of firefighters and soldiers have been deployed to tackle more than a hundred blazes in central and northern portugal, and across the border in the spanish region of galicia. Officials have blamed arsonists for starting many of the fires. Julia albuquerques parents were caught up in the fires yesterday and are stuck near the town of viseu. She joins me from nearby coimbra. Many thanks for joining many thanks forjoining us this afternoon on bbc news. What happened to your parents . Hello. First of all, thank you for interviewing me. It has been a terrible situation here, u nfortu nately. Terrible situation here, unfortunately. Suddenly in many parts of the north of portugal there we re parts of the north of portugal there were fires. My parents are from a small village and our house is surrounded by a forest and as soon as they detected there was a fire nearby they started feeling a lot of smoke and it was getting very dark and hard to see everything. They just grabbed their things and started to go to a nearby town where they thought they would be safer. Actually, i left my home town in the afternoon and just as i got here the fires were already ravaging my hometown. It was all very sudden, very quick. And very brightening for everybody. And very brightening for everybody. And your parents were caught in the fires as they were trying to dry back . Yes. They brought me here and weather going back to my hometown there were caught in the fire on the highway and it was very scary with the fire coming from both sides. Some people were so desperate to get away from that place that they started going on the wrong way on the highway, and that is why there we re the highway, and that is why there were some car accidents. I think thats because people still have the image of the previous fire that broke out a few months ago and because so many people died trying to run away from the cars people now panic when they see fire near the highway and it just panic when they see fire near the highway and itjust makes things more complicated to control. How are your parents now . Where are they . Well, they are in my home, in my hometown. They are safe now. I tried to reach them because sometimes we dont get a connection, it is very bad there. They have no into. Sometimes there is no electricity. Only sometimes can get a phone connection. When i tried today i asked them if the house was 0k today i asked them if the house was ok and they said yes but everything around my house just burned. There isa around my house just burned. There is a large forest around and it has burnt everything. My house is ok but some of my friends houses were very close to the fire. Some really had to use the water hose to try to keep their things not to burn away, and with the help of some firefighters. But it was a very complicated night for everybody. I just but it was a very complicated night for everybody. Ijust kept calling everybody to see if they were ok. Although you know that your parents are all right you look very shattered by what has happened. Yet, i mean, we sell the fire nearby. The house is relatively safe for now because everything has already burned out around the house but we have streets for most of the people in my hometown will still work and it has been completely burned down. Like thousands of people are going to be unemployed and im just really terrified for the future of those people. And we still have many fires ravaging in portugal in many, many parts of portico. I dont know if they are worse but ive heard that people have died and just very heavy that i other house to go to. But still, its a nightmare. We very much appreciate you talking to us at this difficult time. Thank you very much. Thank you very much. Younger people in britain are increasingly using debt to pay for essential items such as rent orfood, according to research from Global Accountancy Firm pwc. The average unsecured debt for 25 to 34 year olds is just under £3,000 compared to just under two thousand for people over 55. The Financial Conduct Authority is getting worried about the amount of money owed on credit. Andrew bailey, the head of the watchdog said its a growing problem and is increasingly affecting more younger people than it did in the past. There was quite a pronounced build up of debt amongst the younger age group. And by the way, i dont think we should necessarily think of this is reckless borrowing. It is directed at central sort of living costs. I do quite a bit of work going around debt advice centres run by charities, talking to people with problem debts. And it is not, you know, it is not credit in a classic sense. It is affordability of basic living in many cases. We can speak to beverley budsworth, managing director, of the the debt Management Company the debt advisor. Thank you forjoining us. How can you tell when you are in trouble with debt . Problem that is where the minimum statutory payments are eating into the money that you need to live on. And really the first step is to work out what is coming in what is going out, what sort of surplus have you got. A few got a debt of, you know, 20 5000. The minimum payment is going to be £300 but you might only be able to afford £100 a month. This debt levels you referred to before, 3000. You know, those are still sort of manageable. There are things that you can do without having to go through formal or Informal Solutions on that sort of level of debt. Youve gone through that process and you realise im in trouble. What is your next step. You do turn to them . There are charities that will give free advice. Any organisation that is giving advice on debt needs to be regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Any tab debt counselling and of the get a run of Debt Management planned for you then youd have debt adjusting. So it is really important to go and get advice from the right places. And then there are commercial entities as well that are regulated and can run, you know, Debt Management plans. The Informal Solutions, Debt Management is appropriate when you debt is getting to four or above. Youve mentioned there are a Debt Management plan. What is one of those and what impact does it have on your daily life a few are implementing one of those . 0k, it will implementing one of those . A debt Management Company will assess your income and expenditure and work out what to go forward. They will act on your behalf, set up a payment plan with your creditors, liaise with creditors to freeze interest and charges so youre looking to reduce the capital and get yourself out of debt. And the idea is you do not take on any further credit during this period and aim your debt. That is a Debt Management plan. You can come at a Debt Management plan at any time. Just really quickly, is it wise to ta ke just really quickly, is it wise to take this kind of rain on yourself without going to an organisation will that get you into more trouble . You can do it. You need to be disciplined because you need to communicate with creditors regularly. Usually a is with them and some people can do it quite easily. Others would find its difficult. The likes of this eab will help you set up these plans a few wa nt will help you set up these plans a few want a do it yourself. Thank you very much. As the uk braces itself for storm ophelia, by strange coincidence it is exactly thirty years since the great storm of 1987. 18 people died and 15 Million Trees were flattened as winds reached speeds of 115mph. Sarah keith lucas has been looking back at that and is in sevenoaks for us. Todayit today it is western part of the British Isles which are feeling the force of storm of delia with winds gusting to near 100 mph. On this very day 30 years ago it was southern and south eastern parts of britain that really felt the force of the great storm which are certainly lived up to thing. We have not seen a storm across this region that strong since that day 30 years ago. And here in kent, this is one of the highest points in kent. And it was really badly by the storm. So much so that 95 of the ancient woodland surrounding the side here was completely flattened and ive been talking to some of the locals here about what it looks like. People have described it as a bit like a matchbox that had been shaken around and scattered all over the floor because of all the trees that we re floor because of all the trees that were downed right across this region. There are millions of trees which fell during that night in 1987. And devastation was widespread really across much of kent, sussex, up really across much of kent, sussex, up towards east anglia, too. Ive also been chatting to people about how things have changed since that night 30 years ago. And in the direct aftermath, i think it was very difficult for people here to get back to normal. The red trees down all the roads, power was out in the region here for at least two weeks. No phone lines, no into back in 1987. So there was a real sense of Community Coming together, helping each other out, in the direct aftermath of the storm. A lot of trees have been replanted since that time. Here in the garden some of the more formal gardens unseemly plantings of trees but in the wild areas in the ancient woodland scattered around the area much of the storm debris was just left lying around and what were seeing now is around and what were seeing now is a real rejuvenation the wildlife here. Ill be looking at some of the trees that are lying flat on the ground and their branches have now turned into new trees which are growing high up. With several surgeons here in types of wildlife that werent around prior to that storm in 87. Beatles and butterflies. Nature is really taking hold of itself, getting fully grown trees back across much of the region so its really changed in the past 30 years since that storm. Of course the other thing that has james is our forecasting has the other thing that has james is ourforecasting has become much more accurate. Computer models are much more sophisticated so were in a much better position to forecast this type of storm if it does occur again. But it is only once every 200 yea rs. But it is only once every 200 years. Were looking at another storm today. Storm ophelia. Over the weekend this was a major category three hurricane aimed. It begins on sunday to a category one hurricane as it came past the west coast of spain and portugal and since then it has turned into normal area of low pressure. I say normal. An incredibly powerful area of low pressure. You can see how tightly packed the isa of us are here as the system is across ireland. And already we have had wind gusts across the south coast of ireland up to 97 mild an hour. The isles of scilly, 67 mild an hour. Otherwise the strongest have been across Western Areas of wales but that will change. Thered weather warnings in force from the irish forecasters. There has been power cuts, there are trees downed in reports of accidents as well. The strong winds will head to Northern Ireland. These are damaging destructive gusts of wind. There is no two ways about it. Further north and east the winds have a good deal lighter. We have some sunshine coming true across central and eastern scotland. What a contrast in the weather. Cloudy and wetter times scotland but in no sunny moment it feels weirdly humid. Temperatures up to 2324 degrees. It feels more like itsjuly day rather than one to watch the latter end of october. The strong that have not gone away and as we get to this evening there is really fierce winds will spread from Northern Ireland across into Western Areas of scotla nd across into Western Areas of scotland and Western Areas of wales, too. Gusts of wind could reach 80 mild an hour. We see disruption to transport in terms of ferries, some flights being cancelled. We could have big problems in the roads over the next 12 hours. And there is potential for some power cuts and flying debris due to the strong winds. Strong winds overnight battle through the central belt of scotland, bouncing across the eastern side of the pennines, too. A very blurry night. A fresh and light but not a cold one. Tomorrow we pick up but not a cold one. Tomorrow we pick up on the strong winds. The strongest across the eastern end of the central belt so over the top of the central belt so over the top of the pennines where cost could reach 60 or 70 mild an hour, Strong Enough to blow lorries over. Were like the to blow lorries over. Were like the to see further transport disruption. As we get to this afternoon in strong winds will slowly fade away. A fresher kind of day. Temperatures 1317. A fresher kind of day. Temperatures 13 17. Rain to end the day and that area of rain will be affecting parts of england on wednesday. It could well reach parts of wales as well but the best of the dry and bright weather across Western Areas. By wednesday theres winds will have died away. That is your weather. Hello, youre watching afternoon live, im simon mccoy. Today at two ophelia storms in, one person dies, thousands have their power cut, and schools are forced to close. They can feel the winds are getting stronger and stronger. A crunch dinner in brussels as theresa may travels to try to break the brexit deadlock. And how, for young people, getting by is now a matter of life and debt. In sport the latest fifa rankings are out. These are important. They will be used for the world cup next year. England will not be among the top seeds. Northern ireland could have a
