The champions chelsea 2 1 at selhurst park. And darren has the weather. Good morning, it is going to be another bright and warm day for many of us. Some rain in scotland and Northern Ireland. But tomorrow we start to feel the effects of 0phelia with the strongest winds in the west. All the details later. Good morning. First, our main story. Disgraced movie mogul, Harvey Weinstein, has been expelled from the organisation that runs the oscars. It follows the growing number of allegations of Sexual Assault made against him. The academy of Motion Pictures said its board voted well in excess of the required two thirds majority to expel him. Peter bowes reports from los angeles. He once ruled the roost. One of the most powerful men in hollywood. Harvey weinstein. The movie mogul, the studio boss credited with scores of oscar wins and nominations. But now branded a rapist, and a serial sexual predator, the hollywood producer has been kicked out of the worlds most influential organisation. It followed an emergency meeting. 5a leading figures, including the likes of Whoopi Goldberg and tom hanks. In a statement, the academy says it wanted to send a message it means Harvey Weinstein will no longer be able to vote for nominees or winners of the oscars. There has been praise for the academys decision but many say this should just be the start. Mia farrow tweeted. The academys action is without precedent. Other members such as the director Roman Polanski who pleaded guilty to a sex crime involving an under age girl and bill cosby who was accused of Sexual Assault, were not expelled from its ranks. Harvey weinstein has been accused of rape by five women. They include the british actress Lysette Anthony who claims she was assaulted in the late 1980s. He has denied in engaging in nonconsensual sex but the scandal continues to unfold. There are two Police Investigations under way in new york and london while hollywood braces for more of its dirty secrets to be made public. We spoke to our los angeles correspondent peter bowes a little earlier who described the impact these revelations have had on Harvey Weinsteins brother bob. This is the most respected Film Organisation in the world and the meeting that happened, some of the leading figure in hollywood, people like tom hanks, involved in taking this decision. It is part of story. I was struck by Bob Weinsteins interview, the younger brother of harvey, in the last 2a hours, talking about his proer in the light of these allegations, saying his brother is depraved and he is shocked by his lack of remorse and revealing in the last five years he has hardly spoken to him. He described it as divorcing his brother five years ago. Apart from in the last ten days he has spoken to him a couple of times, but he was shocked that he showed no remorse and only wanted to talk about how these allegations had been leaked to these allegations had been leaked to the press. Killer drivers could face life behind bars under new laws being proposed by the government. Motorists who cause death by speeding, street racing or driving while on a mobile phone are among those who may be handed the maximum punishment. Andy moore reports. Joseph brown lartey was known to his friends as the gentle giant, at 66, towering over his parents. He was killed three years ago in rochdale by a driver travelling 80 miles an hour in a 30mph zone. Addil haroon was sentenced to six years in jail. The government says drivers like him could now face life behind bars. We think the courts should have power to impose impose life sentences for the reckless life changing cases with multiple victims or speeding or racing or looking at a mobile phone. The wreckage ofjosephs car was displayed in front of the houses of parliament by the Road Safety Charity brake, which welcomes the announcement. It is a victory by families of the bereaved, Crash Victims and charities including brake but we would like the government to go further and increase resources for enforcement so the law can be properly enforced. The Parliamentary Advisory Council for transport safety said there was no evidence that tougher sentences would act as a deterrent. I think its understandable where its coming from but i think there is a danger that it will disappoint the victims families and have no effect on road safety. This lorry driver, tomasz kroker, was scrolling through music on his mobile phonejust seconds before he ploughed into a line of stationary traffic, killing four people. He was sentenced to 10 years injail. The government says cases like this should be seen as similar to manslaughter and a prison term should reflect that. Health professionals in england are to be told to ask patients aged 16 or over about their sexual orientation, under new nhs guidelines. Nhs england said no one would be forced to answer the question, but recording the data would help to avoid discrimination. Lesbian, gay and bisexual people are currently disproportionately affected by Health Inequalities such as Poor Mental Health and a higher risk of self harm and suicide. At least a0 people have died and hundreds of people remain unaccounted for as wildfires sweep across Northern California. Thousands have been forced to evacuate their homes. One of the worst affected areas is the city of santa rosa. Dave lee reports. While huge fires to continue to burn over the hills, the unimaginable task of finding and identifying the dead is now under way. This part of santa rosa was known hauntingly as journeys end. It was a mobile home park, more than 100 people lived here. Specially trained dogs are being used to find bodies in the ash. It is terrifying. It happened so fast and there is nothing you can do. Attempts to contain the fire are beginning to work. Fire lines are being established by digging in and purposefully burning the vegetation. Still, the exhausted firefighters remain at the mercy of the wind, which has picked up again this weekend, forcing more evacuations. More than 90,000 have been displaced so far. Emergency services here estimate it will take some time before people can rebuild their lives. But there is no impatience. This Community Knows it owes a lot to those who are facing the fires head on. Voters in austria are going to the polls for a parliamentary election in which the conservative Peoples Party is expected to win the most seats. During the campaign, the conservative leader, Sebastian Kurz, adopted a hard line against refugees pledging to shut down migrant routes into europe. Today is officially the last day to spend your old round pound coins, although some stores will continue to accept them for a limited period, and banks will still take them. The new twelve sided pound was introduced in march to thwart counterfeiters. Our Business Correspondent joe lynam reports. The hunt is on for old pound coins. Sofas are being searched, piggy banks empties and underused purses raided because from monday, those old pound coins will no longer be accepted in most shops. As of last night, the royal mint estimates that there might be £450 million worth of old coins still in circulation but from monday, shops and vending machines are no longer obliged to accept them. For months, but urge customers to keep them separate from the new coinage when returning them. This has been a really, really big transition period with the £1 coin, probably more so any change in coin because it is so prevalent in coin operated machinery and loose change. It has been quite a tight timetable but the important thing is people realise the deadline is looming, dig up the old ones and get them spent. All is not lost if you miss the deadline. Some stores, including poundland, tesco and iceland, will continue to accept the old coins until the end of october and in case you were wondering what happens to the old coins, they will be melted down to make a new one. Search for those pound coins. Big ben will ding dong merrily on high when its bongs are restored for christmas. The chimes have been silenced since august as part of a controversial four year renovation plan. Only new years eve and remembrance sunday have been earmarked as exemptions. But commons leader Andrea Leadsom has persuaded parliamentary officials to allow the bell to chime over the festive season. Does it feel weird on College Green reporting that when the chimes dont ring. I shouldnt admit to this, but a few weeks ago and i had raised the odd eyebrow about the coverage and then a few days later, i was going to talk to you and charlie and i sauntered down, not paying much attention to the time, just taking my time and then the cameraman said, come on, youre about to be on. And psychologically i was waiting for the bongs, because i wasnt going to be on until two minutes past 8. And i was caught out by the bongs. Theyre more important than you think. The weather is coming up. Back to our top story now. Some of the film industrys most powerful figures have voted to expel Harvey Weinstein from the academy of Motion Pictures the organisation behind the oscars. It follows growing allegations of Sexual Assault against him on both sides of the atlantic. Jason solomons is a film critic and joins us now from central london. This has emerged and been reacted to very quickly over the last few days. It needed to though . Yes, hollywood has to turn its back on Harvey Weinstein. He operated his studio like a Mafia Organisation and now like a Mafia Organisation and now like in good fellas, they have to turn their back on him. Theyre casting him and extraordinary quotes from his brother bob, that has an extraordinary tragic air to it, the siblings, one casting the other out. I was at an awards ceremony in london for the bfi and the award of a fellowship to the british director Paul Greengrass and looking down the list of fellows, there was two inclusions, bob and Harvey Weinstein. I asked what they would do about that and they said they would meet and decide what to do it. It was hinted that they would follow the bafta and the establishment is turning its back and throwing Harvey Weinstein out. It is interesting you said about the bfi, we will keep an eye on that, you mentioned bafta, do you think, bafta was one of the first to react that kind of set the tone didnt it . Yes bafta acted swiftly a nd tone didnt it . Yes bafta acted swiftly and suspended Harvey Weinstein. The these organisations there are due processes and quotas and two thirds of the Academy Board had to vote. I think we will see that happens across the boards of these places. But they have to meet and look at the evidence and say, well, we are not a court of law and some of this hasnt been in a court of law and he has been tried in public come could say and so due process must be observed. But the name has become so toxic that anyone connected with it feels complicit, we hear a lot about complicity, that people seem to be involved in protect him. It is because people hear the rumour, did you hear the rumour, everyone said i heard about it and rumour, everyone said i heard about itand didnt rumour, everyone said i heard about it and didnt do something and people say you should do something. Yes, idid people say you should do something. Yes, i did hear rumours, not to the extent, but he is a scary man, he has shouted at me and shaken me and threatened me and about not getting to. He has shaken you. Yes, he shakes people. He likes to shake people. He is a big guy with a big bear like hands. I have had the hair drier dreement from treatment from him as well. We knew that ha rveys from him as well. We knew that Harveys Hotel was not a place you wa nted Harveys Hotel was not a place you wanted to be summoned to. But that went for everyone, from people with scripts to executives with films that he was going to butcher. And it was a physical thing as well. We all feel come police sint, people who have been complicit. Harvey changed the way hollywood and particularly the academy did their business and made the oscars into a Political Campaign and put the logo from cannes and gave it euro style. If you were an actress with Harvey Weinstein you were on the red carpet trailfor weinstein you were on the red carpet trail for a weinstein you were on the red carpet trailfor a few months, weinstein you were on the red carpet trail for a few months, putting weinstein you were on the red carpet trailfor a few months, putting in the campaign hard miles. He changed that oscar race into a race, now with an industry around it with bets and derbies and the oscars i think will now calm down, because it changed the business and maybe in an hysterical one and there will be some relief the oscars can become calmer and maybe better films some relief the oscars can become calmer and maybe betterfilms will win. It is behaviour that is being examined and the culture of fear that it examined and the culture of fear thatitis examined and the culture of fear that it is produced. I wonder if this is going to change tangibly in the industry and other types of behaviour. He has been kicked out of the academy. But then you look at others, high profile actors, such as mel gibson and roman po llan ski. Theyre there. Yes, we could call them old dinosaurs. It was that artists were allowed, it was the work that was honoured and admired and we could ignored the man or the artist behind it. I think that is what is changing now. The modern era is about the cult of personality and that personality is now being examined and it doesnt matter how good the work or how popular the work the man or the woman behind it will have to suffer that scrutiny and you cant throw up this Artists Union and say it is about producing good work. But it is not, it is about being a good person. That is the shift that will happen in the industry. Very interesting, thank you. Now the weather with darren. 30 yea rs now the weather with darren. 30 years from the great storm, we have a real hurricane on the scene. It is a real hurricane on the scene. It is a long way from us at the moment. But winds of 115mph, it strengthened from this time yesterday. It will head north and weaken. No longer a hurricane as we feel the impacts on monday. What we are feeling now is the warm air that is being pushed ahead of that south of this band of cloud. Under that cloud we have some rain and that will push into scotla nd rain and that will push into scotland and Northern Ireland. For england and wales it is still grey with some fog in the south east. But sunshine in the afternoon. Limited sunshine in the afternoon. Limited sunshine in the afternoon. Limited sunshine in scotland and Northern Ireland. More lieshgly to see this likely to see this light rain sinking south. England and wales dry with some cloud in the afternoon across western parts of england and into wales. Further east more likely to see mist, fog and low cloud lifting and the sunshine coming through. Up to 23 degrees in Eastern England as we saw yesterday. A very might night tonight. Mild night. And the winds pick up as ophelia gets closer. But some very mild air. Here is ophelia, by monday having run upfrom here is ophelia, by monday having run up from the azores. Not as powerful, but the centre of the storm will be near ireland. The winds will pick up in the south west and running through the irish sea could get up to 80mph gusts. Very windy in Northern Ireland. Some rain here and in scotland, england and wales largely dry and in the east the winds wont be as strong. But we still have the last of the warmer airand still have the last of the warmer air and temperatures are up to 2a degrees. The impacts will come from the strength of the wind. It may be damaging, with some disruption to travel. You can keep up to date on that on local radio. Monday and into tuesday the centre of this low that will be weakening, it runs across Northern Ireland into scotland, taking gusts of 60 or 70mph here into southern strand and winds to Northern England by the time of the rush hour on tuesday. Only slowly the winds easing down. Further south, quieter in terms of strength of wind, but we could see some rain in the south later on. A lot going on and of course the potential for those damaging winds. Thank you. Now time to look at the newspapers. Edwina currie is back. We were talking of Alexandra Burke and strictly and the comedian susan calman is making an impact. She was brilliant. She has been touted as the comedy one but she is doing well. Here is her quickstep. Bring me fun, bring he sunshine, bring he love cheering and applause. Brilliant. Lot of gusto. I think she is auditioning to be the christmas fairy. She is fab. It is so interesting trying to pick out who will make the impact. Interesting trying to pick out who will make the impactlj interesting trying to pick out who will make the impact. I love the glitter, the music and the fun and as youre heading into winter and it is dark and we are going to have a hurricane, we have strictly. And people trying something new. Hurricane, we have strictly. And people trying something newm hurricane, we have strictly. And people trying something new. It is lovely to see new people. Some of the the people in there know who theyre doing with dance. I vote for theyre doing with dance. I vote for the ones starting at the bottom, like i did and will probably stay on the bottom. What has caught your eye . We spoke to two parents today ofjoseph who was killed by a driver who was driving at 80mph in a 30mph zone. Theyre campaigning for tougher sentences. Theyre likely to achieve what theyre after, the Government Department responsible for this has had what huge consultation, over 9,000 responses about what to do about modernising the law on killing when youre behind the wheel of a car. They have a separate consultation on cycling as well, because a conviction was obtained for somebody who killed a pedestrian, but it needed victorian legislation which is ridiculous. I have heard that people involved with the driving organisations say, well, there is no evidence that longer sentences will deter. But of course sentencing is designed to do a host of things and one is to reflect our sense of fairness in society that if you punch somebody and kill them, you punch somebody and kill them, you will face a life sentence. If you will face a life sentence. If you go out and in a car and do stupid things, youre behind the wheel of a Lethal Weapon and should face similar things. Those who want to temper the mood say that if you make a mistake you should be given the chance to be returned to back into society and contribute to society. Well, i mean we need to put more effort into reforming people inside prison. All of us. Now the sunday telegraph and you have picked out a story about austrian politics and some of you have been concerned about the rise of the far right in europe have pointed to recent Election Results saying there is not much to worry about, but we have extremist austrian election king makers. Well, the election is is on today and we are likely to see a new leader, who nobody has seen. Sebastian kurs, he is 31. He is not the extremist, he is leading the austrian Peoples Party. That will win about 34 . About the same as Angela Merkel in germany. But they will have to go into coalition and the other lot who are the so called extremist, the Freedom Party of austria. Within a few words of an election in a country like austria, youre talking about hitler and the nazis and this week we had what i thought was an offensive remark from junker, the president of european commission, saying we are grateful to the british for before the war, for the, for what happened during the warand for the, for what happened during the war and what happened, as if none of it mattered. That the war still colours european politics. What has happened in the austria is the election has turned on immigration and the open Door Programme and austrian voters say they dont like. Sebastian kurz has campaigned on closing the borders. That is what the voters are saying, and that goes against the whole european ideal of open borders and everyone is welcome and actually what politicians have to do is catch up what politicians have to do is catch up with the voters, who are the people who have to put up with the consequences. People who have to put up with the consequences. My grandfather was an immigrant. At 16 he arrived in liverpool. The other thing that struck me in the stuff we have had about the negotiations and brexit, we have to be aware of what the other side is worried about and theyre worried about losing 15 of their budget. That is why i think we are not going to have a hard brexit. Because the other side, brussels, is going to think about their budget. They need the money. They need the money. Well, ithink they need the money. They need the money. Well, i think we will end up with a decent deal. But it is nerve racking. A story about nhs doctors and nurses in england are going to be required to ask every patient over the age of 16 about their sexual orientation. This made me giggle. The mail on sunday is very agitated about it. You ask patients about their sex lives, they will lie and lie in ways that are expect unexpected. One doct and said if you a 87 year old woman if youre a lesbian, she may storm out. Or she may say yes and be interested in helping other people whose lives havent been as happy as hers. But people will lie in this way, if you ask an active 29 year old male, there is is one or two in the studio, what about their sex lives, would they like to describe them, they will say theyre superb. A bit of lying. But theyre asking about their sexual orientation. That is why the headline is wrong and some people are agitated, perhaps without reason, if we are asked, it is not compulsory, if we are asked about our sexual orientation, i think you should do that. I want to say, well done to chris, it is chris masons first day. Thank you. I feel about these strictly people about not irritating your partner, being the novice. Youre doing well. We can see him back here again definitely. Thank you. Headlines are coming up. We will see you soon. Hello, this is breakfast with chris mason and naga munchetty. But first, a summary of this mornings main news. First, our main story. Disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein has been expelled from the organisation that runs the oscars. It follows the growing number of allegations of Sexual Assault made against him. The academy said it wanted to send a message that the era of ignorance and complicity is over. We were told about the encounters with Harvey Weinstein. I heard rumours, i didnt know anything to the extent of what they were rumours, but he is a a scary man, he has shouted at me and shaken me and threatened me with not being able to do myjob if i published a certain bad review. He has shaken me. He shakes people. He likes to shake people. He is a big quy w likes to shake people. He is a big guy w big bear like hands. I have had the hair drier treatment as well. It was not easy to stand up to him. Killer drivers could face life behind bars under new laws being proposed by the government. Motorists who cause death by speeding, street racing or driving while on a mobile phone are among those who may be handed the maximum punishment. But one prominent Road Safety Group said changing the law could do more harm than good. We understand the sentiment behind it, but having an extended sentence, there was no evidence that that would help. Although it has been put forward perhaps very understandably by the families of victims, we think it could end up disappointing them or because if the courts dont apply a light sentence, they may feel more disappointed than they are at the moment. Health professionals in england are to be told to ask patients aged 16 or over about their sexual orientation, under new nhs guidelines. Nhs england said no one would be forced to answer the question but recording the data would help to avoid discrimination. Lesbian, gay and bisexual people are currently disproportionately affected by Health Inequalities such as Poor Mental Health and a higher risk of self harm and suicide. At least a0 people have died and hundreds of people remain unaccounted for after wildfires devastated Northern California over the past week. Thousands more have been forced to evacuate their homes as strong winds fan the blazes towards san francisco. From midnight tonight, the old round pound coin will no longer be legal tender. However, some stores, including tesco and poundland, will continue to accept them for a limited time, and banks will still take them. The royal mint estimates there might be up to a50 million old coins still in circulation. The new 12 sided pound coin was introduced in march and has high Tech Security features to thwart counterfeiters. And those are the main stories. Time to speak to richard and find out whats happening with this book. Lots going on in football. Yes, Crystal Palace, but what about man city . Is sunning a stunning performance. Six different players found the net against stoke to open up that two point gap at the top of the table. Second placed Manchester United drew 0 0 with liverpool at anfield. And Crystal Palace finally scored a goal and won a game. Ben croucher wraps up the action. Sometimes you just have to stand up and applaud. Not my words stoke tweeted that after being given a footballing masterclass by Manchester City end Kevin De Bruyne. The belgian at his brilliant best. He laid citys seven goals, but did not find the net himself. When his team mates were doing this, he didnt need to. Caught it very well Pep Guardiola sang the praises of Kevin De Bruyne and what he said was citys best performance under him. His time on the pitch, it was absolutely world class. I would argue he is the best player in the premier league by a country mile. City now two clear at the top. Chelsea were there last season and travelled to keep Crystal Palace, who still havent scored in this one. Its in Crystal Palace have their first goal of the season another as well, the champions beaten 2 1. Palace win at last happy hodgson. Shaw Lane Association play barrow in the final qualifier today. Its the Opening Weekend in rugby unions european champions cup. 5 british teams played on saturday including the english champions exeter who beat the pro 1a leaders glasgow. Patrick gearey reports. The champions cup demands much. It is an exhausting competition but an exhilarating one. In meetings between great forces, sometimes its precise angles that count. Glasgow warriors picked one here for Tommy Seymour to score. The warriors are scotlands only representative in this competition and are in some form but eventually buckled on the overbearing exeter chiefs pressure. Sam simmons settled it. The men from the Atlantic Coast attacked in waves, scoring four tries and 3a points. Quins played their part in a remarkable match. And a bonus point as some consolation. Points were a little scarcer at the rec. Bath has spent much of the time keeping benetton treviso out. But when they got the chance to express themselves, it all flowed. Zach mercer with the first of their two tries. 22 nil, not the whole story but the part that matters. Earlier, leicester had to face the unseasonable parisian heat and an unstoppable fijian lock. The giant frame of racing 92s Leone Nakarawa seemed to be everywhere, including in one occasion over the tryline. Racing scored three times in the first half but the tigers got two of their own, including johnny mays seventh try in seven games. Only enough for a losing bonus point but in this competition, every point is hard earned. Old rivals rafael nadal and Roger Federer will meet in the final of the shanghai masters today. Hate crime against children with disabilities has more than doubled since last year, according to an investgation by bbc radio 5 live. Verbal abuse, online trolling and even physical intimidation have all been reported. Adrian goldberg has been looking into this for todays 5 live investigates. Hes here to tell us more. Good morning. What have you found out . The figures paint a bleak and alarming picture. We contacted every uk police force and they showed that in 201a15, uk police force and they showed that in 201a 15, there were 181 recorded hate crimes against children with disabilities. Last year that had risen by 150 to a50 recorded crimes. Hate crimes against children with disabilities. Its a shocking figure. Its extraordinary. I suppose one way of looking at it though is if these figures are creeping up, at least they are being recorded. Yes. There was a critical report of the police and Crown Prosecution Service stating that they werent taking hate crimes against disabled people seriously enough. The number of prosecutions for hate crimes generally have increased. Figures will be published on tuesday. But the fact that there is hate crime against disabled people and disabled children, it is shocking. Can you describe the types of crimes . It can be physical attack, online trolling. I have been speaking to one mother who has a daughter who isjust speaking to one mother who has a daughter who is just under two years old who has water on the brain which causes the head to swell and she has recorded a really moving online diary, which she talks about the child being abused in a supermarket in swansea by two other children. Now that is bad enough, but then she recalls that the mother of the two children, who she expected to intervene and save you cant make fun ofa intervene and save you cant make fun of a child because they have a feeding tube and a swollen head, but the motherjoined in, pointed her finger and laughed. Thats not the kind of thing that will be recorded asa kind of thing that will be recorded as a hate crime, but if you arent the mother, or the child, who might be older and is conscious, it will make it extremely upset and it is indicative of a wider problem. Its about education are making people aware of differences. Yes, and hopefully by bringing this to light we are pointing at the fact that this thing does exist, it is extremely harmful unhelpful and actually needs to be taken, if you like, atan actually needs to be taken, if you like, at an official level and a human level. Where can we hear more about this . 11 oclock on bbc radio five live. Thank you. Youre watching breakfast from bbc news. The main stories this morning. One of your predecessors is coming in today. Yes, 30 years on from michael fish was maxed all, we have a real hurricane. Ophelia is the most powerful hurricane to have been this far north in the atlantic. We are drawing in some warm air ahead of that. Its coming into the south of that. Its coming into the south of that band of cloud that is producing more rain. It is now moving southwards back into scotland. Sunshine over east anglia and the south east, but not much sunshine for scotland and Northern Ireland. Rain and drizzle drifting southwards during the day. Dryburgh for england and wales. Some areas of cloud will linger, most notably over western parts of wales. Temperatures in Eastern England will be 22, 20 three degrees. Not much rain by the evening across scotland and Northern Ireland, but it gets a boost later as the winds start to pick up and we are drawing in even warmer air as what is left of ophelia approaches our shores. This is where we are expecting ophelia to be on monday morning. By then, an ex hurricane, but the centre getting very close to southern ireland and we will see the wind is picking up on the western side of the uk. Costs of up to 70 mph, heading into the irish sea. Getting very windy in Northern Ireland later tomorrow. In the east, it will be breezy and warmth at this time of the year. This is the peak of the temperatures. It will be the wind that will be the main story. Monday, probably in the tuesday, damaging winds and disruption to travel. Do keep up to date on bbc local radio and online. The centre of this deep area of low pressure will run across Northern Ireland. The storm will weaken as it runs into scotland. It will pick up the winds, blow them across Northern Ireland and in the southern scotland. Only slowly as the low pressure m oves scotland. Only slowly as the low pressure moves away will be wind sought to ease. Further south, wind is not as strong. Some sunshine and ben raine coming into the south later during the day. And then rain. Sent helen used to be one of the most inaccessible places. Just one shaped leaves every three weeks, but now the Remote Island has welcomed its first commercial flight. The champagne was flowing after months of delays and high winds that labelled this is the most useless airport, the first commercial flight finally touched down on st helena. The government paid for the new airport to bring in tourists and give the subsidised economy a well needed boost, but then they discovered that wind made it too dangerous for passenger planes to land. The islands than greeted the first passengers to arrive. Now they have worked out a way round it. Darwin came here in the 19th century and complained about the wind. The department for International Development has been criticised for not realising. No, it is not a clock up not realising. No, it is not a clock up at all. This is a Remote Island in the middle of the south atlantic ocean. We have many challenges here. The wind is one of them and we will ove rco m e the wind is one of them and we will overcome it. Standing above the ru nway overcome it. Standing above the runway you understand what all the trouble has been about. This is a rock in the middle of the atlantic ocean. The gale that is blowing is an average busy day. It is unpredictable and planes have been struggling to land. That is what they now have a small aircraft doing they now have a small aircraft doing thejob. Not as many they now have a small aircraft doing the job. Not as many tourists to taking the scenery and history. This is where napoleon died in exile. His old house now part of france. With a500 people in the close community. The average wage is £7,000. British aid subsidises most things. What do the got bits flight coming in . Aid subsidises most things. What do the got bits flight coming mm aid subsidises most things. What do the got bits flight coming in . It is awesome. Very popular. After a lot of files and a lot of money, saints, as they are called, are hoping for a silver lining. That seems like the very definition of inaccessible and remote, but i guess a little bit of good news in terms of being able to get in and out of the island with the new airport. Think of the royal ballet and you might imagine plush theatres, big chandeliers and red velveteen seats. But for the first time, the Ballet Company has swapped its usual home the Royal Opera House for a disused warehouse in south east london. Why . So that audiences can get up close and personal to the performance. Wendy hurrell has more. An unusually intimate view of world class ballet dancers. They have left the sumptuous surroundings of the Royal Opera House for a vast industrial space in south east london. And the audience has been freed from its velveteen seats. I think its really important to give people a flexible experience of how they experience ballet because that makes it much more accessible, so they can watch for 20 minutes or two hours. They can follow their favourite performer around or stand against the wall and take it all in the distance. Or get very, very close and see exposed the physical strain not normally visible from inside a typical auditorium. We are traditionally used to working on a proscenium stage where we know the audience is watching us from the front and the fund only but in this space, however, they can be down below, to the left, to the right, front and back. We have to be aware that they can see us in every shape, every angle so yeah, that adds a completely different feeling to the way we perform it. The piece is called the dreamers ever leave you. This performance is a collaboration between the royal ballet and the National Ballet of canada. It is set to music composed and played by Lubomyr Melnyk who developed an outrageously difficult piano technique called continuous music. The sound fills the space, the printworks at canada water. The dancers emerge from the groups of onlookers. The movement and the energy and the lighting and the music will always change. There are set times that we go on and go off stage and we are supposed to be here with this partner dancing this pas de deux this or doing a solo over here but we are given the freedom to change dynamics or pause in the section or go faster or slower so its not every day you get that freedom an artist. Ballet can be seen as a rather exclusive art form but taken from the familiar stage setting, might this immersive experience start to change that. Wendy hurrell, bbc news. It was 30 years ago tonight that one of the worst storms in recent decades hit the uk. 18 people died and hundreds more were injured as winds reached speeds of more than 100 miles per hour. Just hours before it struck, a certain weatherman told the British Public that there was no reason to panic. Michael fish has been on a journey revisiting some of the areas worst hit in 1987. I am michael fish and i was a bbc weatherman for over a0 years. A lot of snow in eastern parts of the country overnight and still a lot to come. We gave forecast in fahrenheit as well celsius. Ive got nothing but bad news. We have trouble with the winds today. And then there was this. Earlier a woman called the bbc and said there was a hurricane on the way and if you are watching, dont worry, there isnt. The worst storms for hundreds of years hit the south of england early this morning, killing a dozen people and bringing the whole south east to a halt. There was no warning, the weathermen were caught with their forecast down. So was it really a hurricane . I am meeting someone who should know the answer tom schafernaker, the bbc weatherman. A mere eight years old in 1987, he is now a hurricane expert and im hoping tom can help me out. You are absolutely right, it is not a hurricane. Hurricanes are different weather systems, they do not occur in the uk, they have to happen over tropical waters but the one in 1987 still produced hurricane strength winds so you dont have to have a hurricane to make Hurricane Force winds, it can still be nasty. People are asking, why weren twe warned . Didnt the weathermen know there was such a fierce storm there is a very clear marker, you can see it from space, a particular cloud feature and i think back in 1987, even if you saw it on the satellite image, you would not know what it was because it was poorly understood. I am meeting my former colleague Ewen Mccallum at the swank headquarters of the met office in exeter. We are looking at satellite photographs, hand drawn weather maps and photos from back then. Look at that zone. This is very, very powerful. This is three oclock in the morning. The storm was at its peak. Some cloud would come across. There would be a warning five days in advance now. There would be no getting away from it. Absolutely. And there you go. There is the sting jet staring us in the face. And if another one comes along, i am confident next time around, we will all get plenty of warning. Joining us now is michael fish. Good morning. I guess there has not been a single day in the last 30 years where you have been asked about the events of three decades ago. where you have been asked about the events of three decades ago. If only i had events of three decades ago. If only ihada events of three decades ago. If only i had a pound for every time that the tea have been played, i would be a multimillionaire by now. Watching your conversation though, technically, meteorologically, you we re technically, meteorologically, you were right. Yes. We dont get hurricanes anywhere near the british isles, but saying that, there was a nasty storm on its way to Northern Ireland. Quite ironic it should happen 30 years to the day. Give us some sense from your perspective as a meteorologist, how has the technology improved over the last three decades . To put it bluntly, how much better forecast now . Much better and much longer. The amount of data is phenomenal. These days we have ships, aircraft s, satellites, billions of pieces of data going to the forecast every day and the computer itself is so powerful. We have one of the most powerful computers in the world. In the old days, the computer had no more power than our smartphones. We can now forecast up to ten days ahead which is quite incredible. That means we are forecasting weather systems that arent actually there. The computer can produce weather systems out of the blue and forecast what they will do, something that a human being could never contemplate doing. Do, something that a human being could never contemplate doingm that the big leap forward . The a ccu ra cy that the big leap forward . The a ccu ra cy of that the big leap forward . The accuracy of weather a few days ahead. With regards to short day forecasts, any difference . There are roughly the same because the money has been invested in longer forecasts. Looking back, it mustve felt like a good line to stop the forecast. I was talking to collea g u es forecast. I was talking to colleagues and because it was live tv, itjust colleagues and because it was live tv, it just slipped colleagues and because it was live tv, itjust slipped out. A good line to start the forecast. Thank you very much. Great to talk to you. And dont forget inside out tomorrow. Yes, a chance to see the full programme tomorrow at 7 30pm. Thats it from me. Have a lovely sunday. Goodbye. This is bbc news.
