Donald trump has set out an aggressive new policy towards iran. Mr trump wants to confront what he calls the hostile actions of a rogue regime. He also refused to certify the 2015 Iranian Nuclear deal. Lets ta ke lets take you back to 2015 and vienna, you consider leaders here as the deal was signed at president 0bama hailed it as one more chapter in our pursuit of a safer, more helpful and more hopeful world. Mr trump, though, called the deal incompetent. As you can imagine, there has been plenty of reaction to this decision. President rouhani of iran says. We have also had some reaction from israel. Benjamin yet in yahoo said. Benjamin netanyahu said. Benjamin netanyahu said. On the other hand, the Russian Deputy foreign minister says. In his speech, mr trump called irans regime fanatical and described the deal as one of the worst agreements in history. By its own terms, the iran deal was supposed to contribute to regional and International Peace and security. And yet, while the United States adheres to our commitment under the deal, the Iranian Regime continues to fuel conflict, turmoil and terror throughout the middle east and beyond. Importantly, iran is not living up to the spirit of the deal. So today, in recognition of the increasing menace posed by iran, and after extensive consultations with our allies, i am announcing a new strategy to address the full range of irans destructive actions. First, we will work with our allies to counter the regimes destabilising activity and support for temperature support for temperature proxies. Second, we will place additional sanctions on the regime to block their financing of terror. Third, we will address the regimes proliferation of missiles and weapons that threaten its neighbours global trade and freedom of navigation. And finally, we will deny the regime all paths to a nuclear weapon. That was President Donald Trump and here is more of the uranium president , Hassan Rouhanis response to the statement by President Trump. Translation trump did not correctly Study International law. How is it that multilateral treaty by the United Nations, originally an United Nations document, can be cancelled by one country alone . Trump does not understand that this is not a bilateral treaty between iran and the United States and seems to think he can do whatever he wants to do. Barbara plett usher is our state department correspondent. She joins us from washington. What President Trump has done is frame us policy towards iran as confronting a rogue state that supports terrorism, rather than trying to preserve a landmark arms control deal that prevents iran from building a nuclear bomb, so thatis from building a nuclear bomb, so that is quite a shift in President Trump said that arms control agreement was very weak, he wouldnt certify that it was in americas interests but he didnt withdraw from it, he said it would leave it up from it, he said it would leave it up to congress to seal its fate. There is no appetite in congress to kill the deal and Lawmakers Said they will work with the president to try and fix the flaws, as they see it, with the agreement and Rex Tillerson has been speaking about trying to convince the europeans also to re evaluate the nuclear deal. To our friends and allies in europe, i think we have a real opportunity to address all the threads that are posed by iran. I think the plan the president has laid out has been quite clear in terms of articulating those threats but really, its in all of our interests to Work Together and i fully expect that our allies and friends in europe and in the region are going to be very supportive in efforts undertaken to deal with irans threats. Well, the europeans have said they are concerned about some of irans regional behaviour but they have also come out very clearly in support of the agreement. They basically said it is not the americans agreement to fix, they have said it is in the National Security interests and have warned congress not to take any steps that would undermine the security and they have said there is a collective responsibility to preserve a Nuclear Agreement that they say is working. Here is federica mogherini, the Eu Foreign Affairs chief. It is not a bilateral agreement, it is not belong to any single country and it is not up to any single country to terminate it. It is a multilateral agreement which was unanimously endorsed by the United Nations Security Council resolution 20 to 31. It is a robust deal that gives guarantees and a strong monitoring mechanism so Irans Nuclear programme is and will remain exclusively for civilian purposes only. We cannot afford, as an International Community and as europe for sure, to dismantle a Nuclear Agreement that is working and delivering, especially now. The International Atomic Energy Agency has verified eight times that iran is implementing all its Nuclear Related commitments following a comprehensive and strict monitoring system. There have been no violations of any of the commitments included in the agreement. Barbara, we are starting to get the impression that there is a lot of placating taking place of iran. Heads of state, heads of organisations. We have just heads of state, heads of organisations. We havejust heard from emmanuel macron, saying he will be sending his foreign minister to iran shortly, to tehran, shortly. Could this possibly backfire on mr trump . Well have to wait and see, these are really Uncertain Times but that was one of the concerns of those who advised him not to withdraw from the deal completely and those who were also concerned about this step of him not certifying the deal and trying to tinker with it again and reopen some of the issues he feels arent working. They felt that the americans would be isolated, that there would be a wedge between them and their allies and that their credibility would suffer, so those are all concerns amongst some people here and certainly the europeans have, very strongly, but even before the announcement, saying they are com pletely the announcement, saying they are completely committed to the deal and they believe it is in their security interests and they are willing to stick by it. They are willing to address the concerns that concern them to but not at the risk of the deal. So you may see america being left on the outside of this process in the future but at the same time, it isa in the future but at the same time, it is a very important party, so if it is a very important party, so if it pulls out all if it undermines the deal doesnt commit to it as much as before, then that will also affect the effectiveness of the deal. Barbara plettusher, thank you very much. Another actor has alleged she was raped by the hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein. Rose mcgowan is the fourth woman to make similar accusations against him. She says she told the boss of amazon studios, roy price, but was ignored. Mr price has since been suspended by amazon. It comes as police in new york and london have launched their own investigations. 0ur entertainment correspondent lizo mzimba reports. Harvey weinsteins star has plummeted. Actress rose mcgowan has now said that she too was raped by the disgraced Film Producer Harvey Weinstein in a scandal that is now affecting one of the worlds biggest companies, amazon. In a series of tweets, mcgowan has said publicly to the companys chief executive, she said the amazon head of studio in question, roy price, is facing an accusation from a female producer that he lewdly propositioned her in 2015. In a statement, amazon said in new york today, one of americas big banks, goldman sachs, said it was considering its options for its sta ke was considering its options for its stake in the wine stain Company Whose headquarters are not far from wall street the weinstein company. Long time political friends are long time politicalfriends are now distancing themselves from this big dollar democratic fundraiser too. Hillary clinton here speaking with the bbcs andrew marr. Hillary clinton here speaking with the bbcs andrew marr. It was just disgusting and the stories that have come out are heartbreaking. And i really commend the women who have been willing to step forward now and tell their stories. But i think its important that we not just focus on him and whatever consequences flow from these stories about his behaviour, but that we recognise this kind of behaviour cannot be tolerated anywhere. The show must go on is the motto of the entertainment industry. It was lights, camera, action at this movie premiere in new york last night. But many women, like british actress carey mulligan, hope this will be a watershed moment in what is still a male dominated business. It starts with women having opportunities behind the camera and then in front of the camera and then in front of the camera and then in front of the camera and then in the boardroom, and it all comes down to money. So i think its about the industry catching up with the idea that you can put a woman in a female role and make a fortune. Harvey weinstein has denied any relegations of nonconsensual sex denied any relegations of nonconsensual sex allegations. He is now believed to be in a rehab clinic in arizona. That was nick brya nt clinic in arizona. That was nick bryant reporting there, as you heard. Joining me now from new york city is melissa silverstein, the founder of women in hollywood, and organisation fighting for gender equity in hollywood. First off, melissa, were you surprised when this story broke . I was actually surprised at how large scale it was. People in the business have heard rumours, especially a person who focuses on gender equality of inequality, but i didnt realise the breadth of it, so that, i think, shocked everybody. Why do you think these women came forward now . What you think triggered it, do you know . Well, i dont know per se, but what i have been feeling is that previously, men in the business who everybody thought were bullet proof, like roger ailes or bill 0reilly, we re like roger ailes or bill 0reilly, were able to be vanquished and taken down for being the harassers that they were and i also think that there is a sense in this country right now that we are under siege as women and that our rights are being rolled back and women have had enough. And once the New York Times got a couple of people to talk, i think that started the ball rolling and now it is continuing to grow as it rolls downhill, snowballs tend to do that, and i think we are still just at the beginning of this. From the position of your publication, are you expecting more names to add to that list on both sides . We havent been breaking the news, we havent been breaking the news, we have been kind of following the news but what we try to do is put it in a bit of context, how hollywood is. It has a lot of institutional sexism. I liken it to an onion, you peel away one layer and there is just another hole they are there and i think it is a toxic environment, full of toxic masculinity. It is run by men, it is about men, it is for men, so what we need to do is kind of remake this and have more women involved in decision up and down the structure, as well as more people of colour, because right now, this industry is really quite eccentric and white focused and male focused and white focused and male focused and the stories of our world are not just those white eccentric. And the stories of our world are not just those white eccentric. You talk about the industry being male focused and many people are saying that harvey is bound to be given a second chance, they often are within this industry. Should that happen . What would your thoughts be . This industry. Should that happen . What would your thoughts be . |j this industry. Should that happen . What would your thoughts be . I dont believe he should. I think then get Second Chances but i dont see a lot of womens Second Chances and i think this is something that people should draw a line in the sand with. This man has wrought havoc on this industry for the last three decades and has just basically man spread his way all across every facet of it and the Industry Needs to lead right now. It is a global industry, 70 cents of every dollar of studio films is made outside of the United States and it is up to this industry that says it is very progressive to actually be progressive and stand up for women. Do you think it is particularly bad within the industry, in hollywood, because the industry, in hollywood, because the industry is so aesthetic . Hollywood is just industry is so aesthetic . Hollywood isjust a industry is so aesthetic . Hollywood is just a microcosm industry is so aesthetic . Hollywood isjust a microcosm of industry is so aesthetic . Hollywood is just a microcosm of everything that happens everywhere, a microcosm of the world, so things that are not goodin of the world, so things that are not good in many industries, women have a lot of issues in Different Industries are servants of sexism in terms of sexism and hollywood is just another place but this is an industry that create streams for people, it is a connector, people go to movies and they connect with each other and what happens is it is amplified, because it is so visible. Melissa silverstein, thank you very much. Do stay with us here on bbc world news, because still to come, we will have more reaction for you as leaders around the world respond to us President Trumps new aggressive stance on iran. Stay tuned. Bells told nationwide to announce the first rescue and chilly let out an almighty roar. Hello, you are watching bbc world news today. 0ur hello, you are watching bbc world news today. Our top story. President trump has set out an aggressive new policy towards iran, saying he wa nted policy towards iran, saying he wanted to confront what he called the hostile sanctions or actions, rather of a rogue regime. So we are going to stay with this story. We will speak to our bbc persian correspondent based in new york. First off, we are hearing about sanctions against various aspects of iran. How serious would they be for the country . The ones that we re were announced today are not significant, because they are a continuation of going after Certain Companies individuals that the us is deemed to be helping, the Ballistic Missile programme or the Ballistic Missile programme or the revolutionary guards. The ones that matter are the ones that possibly the United States congress could pass, with the blessing of President Trump, as he has asked them to, which will trigger if iran does not abide by the new terms that the United States wants to impose or dictate individually and outside of the framework, the p five plus one. That remains to be seen whether the us senate and the us house of representatives will actually pick that up, will they passive, will be. What will be in it . But in whatever way they try to change the terms of the deal, that would basically amount to a violation of the deal by the United States and nobody, not just iran, the deal by the United States and nobody, notjust iran, but the european union, china and russia would reject that, as they have so far. We heard mr trump using very provocative language, rogue nation, taking us through a brief History Lesson as well and i understand Hassan Rouhani responded to that. Just remind us what he said. He took full advantage of this opportunity to unite iranians, because first of all, the United States president coming out with grievances will only prompt the iranian side to list their grievances of the last 50 yea rs, their grievances of the last 50 years, the coup detat in 1953, all the way to the support of the shah of iran, all the way to the support for saddam in the eight years war against iran, for shooting down iranians civil aircraft, so there is no shortage of that on either side and the iranians have a list they are happy to share with the world, but he also took this opportunity to remind iranians, who are worried and upset, in public, that if the deal is undermined as a lifeline of their economic life, it matters to the public in iran, so as mr trump attacked the nuclear deal, iranians will see it as an attempt to undermine their economy and they dont respond to that positively. So president rouhani pointed that out and made sure that everybody here is that it and made sure that everybody here is thatitis and made sure that everybody here is that it is now for the first time, as he said it, it is a United States thatis as he said it, it is a United States that is isolated. Europe, china, russia, the rest of the world want this deal to stay, it is the us pulling out of it. We will have to stop there but thank you very much for that. It is time for the sport, here is hugh ferris. It has been a dramatic ten days or so it has been a dramatic ten days or so of International Football but if you have missed the premier league, what better president than to liverpool against Manchester United what better president than . Both managers have been speaking, jurgen klopp has said it is one of the most special games in World Football and jose mourinho, his united team are second only on goal difference, and hes excited about the trip to anfield. We go to play against a big tea m anfield. We go to play against a big team with a big tradition in an amazing stadium with great tradition. We know that the fans, they have huge animosity against Manchester United historically, but this is what we want. So we are very happy to have one more opportunity in our careers to play in this beautiful conditions. It is beautiful conditions. It is beautiful to play at anfield, beautiful. Disrespectful and the is have tottenham manager moritz your pochettino has described pep guardiolas suggestion that his side should be known as the harry kane team. Harry kane has scored 11 and six for spurs but pochettino relieves the Manchester City bosss remark was unfair. The pair were rival managers also in spain. Remark was unfair. The pair were rival managers also in spainlj think that situation doesnt affect me, but the reality, it was very disrespectful for many people. And its difficult to understand, because he was part of the big success in barcelona, when it was messi in his best, and i never said it was a messi team. Now, a major reva m p of test it was a messi team. Now, a major revamp of test cricket is planned, making it more appealing to those fa ns making it more appealing to those fans increasingly turning towards the shorter forms of the game. The icc has given the go ahead for a 19, two year series to begin in 2019. There will also be a 13 team one Day International league which will lead to direct qualification for the world cup. There will also be a trial of four they test matches instead of five. From 2019, we are going to have a lead which is played over a two year period, the top two teams will then be in a play off, a kind of grand final, which will probably take place at lords, in 2021. So nine teams but there is an time within those two years to back the rate for every team to play every other team, so each side will play six series, three home and three away, that is one thing that isa three away, that is one thing that is a bit unusual. Also, a series could be two matches, it could be five matches. England might choose to play bangladesh in a two match series and against australia, keep it to series and against australia, keep ittoa series and against australia, keep it to a five test series, like the ashes. And that is all of the sport for now. And dont forget that you can follow all of the stories here on bbc world news. We have got the latest from mr trump on the nuclear deal and other issues regarding iran, so do stay with us here on bbc world news. You can get in touch with us on twitter, the team as well. As far as i go i am at. More coming up shortly, cheerio. Good evening. Tropical storms and hurricanes crop up fairly regularly in these World Weather forecasts, but later in this bulletin, ive got news of one hurricane that is actually quite close to home. More on that in a moment. Lets begin, though, across north america, where wildfires continue to dominate the headlines, burning still across large swathes of california. It is reported around 70,000 hectares of land has been burned through by these fires, whole communities have been destroyed, many, many people evacuated from their homes, and the weather is not helping, because it is very, very dry in this part of the world. It stays that way through the world. It stays that way through the next few days and at times, some very strong and gusty winds, so the situation is unlikely to be helped by those weather conditions. Further eased, quite an active weather system moving across the plains to the great lakes. If you have plans in this direction the star the weekend, there could be heavy rain and thunderstorms which could cause one or two issues. Now to vietnam, because if you have been staying in touch with our forecasts this week, you will already know there has been some significant flooding. They have had huge amounts of rain across this area recently and this could be yet more bad news, becausejust moving to the rest of the philippines, we have this area of cloud and this is tropical is the khanun. The track is uncertain but it looks like itll head to the south china and the north of vietnam, where they really could do without more significant wet weather, so we will keep eye on that and we will keep you posted. For europe this weekend, the forecast is pretty decent. Athens seeing sunshine. Cooler up to the north east of the continent but the western europe, including hero time, we things gradually warming up. However, into the start of next week, things look more dramatic and it is because of this area of cloud on the satellite picture. It doesnt look like much but what we actually have here is a fully formed hurricane, hurricane 0phelia. Watch what happens to this area of low pressure over the next few days. It will drift northwards and eastwards towards the british isles. It wont bea towards the british isles. It wont be a hurricane anymore by this stage but the tightly squeezed isobars show there could be some very, very strong winds indeed tied up with the system as it moves across the republic of ireland and then across northern and western parts of the uk, we suspect. So this does need watching, could bring some very strong winds indeed the start of the week. Important to stress, though, this storm will no longer be a hurricane and before we get there, the weekend in decent shape for many, quite warm in the south, a lwa ys many, quite warm in the south, always rain at times in the north west. More details on the uk weather in half an hour. This is bbc world news. The headlines. President trump are set out a more confrontational approach to iran, he condemns terror ran as a fanatical regime and refused to sign of the International Nuclear deal. Meanwhile, the iranian president has said the us was more than ever isolated and that it could not unilaterally change the nuclear deal. He also said iran would continue to respect the deal as long as it benefited from it. Over 30 people have been confirmed dead in wildfires in california. Hundreds are still missing.
