Sportsday on bbc news wales move a step closer to qualifying for next years world cup finals after beating georgia in their penultimate match. Good evening. Theresa may has said she has the full support of her cabinet after a former Party Chairman said there should be a leadership contest. The Prime Minister said the country needed calm leadership and declared, thats what im providing. But grant shapps claims that around 30 tory mps back his call for a leadership election, adding, there are cabinet ministers who feel the same way. Our deputy Political Editor john pienaar reports. If only theresa mays bodyguard could see off the political plots, but thats up to her friends and to her, away from westminster today, and doing her best to look cool, still in charge, getting on with business. What i think is necessary for the country now, what the country needs, is calm leadership. Thats exactly what im providing, and im providing that with the full support of my cabinet. Thank you. Maybe, but not all ex cabinet colleagues from happier times, like the former Party Chairman, whos been outed as a plotter and admits stirring mutiny, gathering names of other tory mps who want the Prime Minister gone and gone quickly. Well actually, just over a period of time, since the general election that went so badly wrong, there are quite a lot of colleagues who feel we might now be better served by having a leadership election sooner rather than later. This was really to try to gather those people together in order to be able to say that to her. Mr shapps claims some 30 mps support a plan to get mrs may out and force a leadership contest, including five former ministers. Under tory rules, it takes 48 mps to force a vote of no confidence. If she loses that vote, she must resign. Allies say rebels dont have the numbers. I was in the hall when the conservative party rose as one to give her a thunderous standing ovation and ive been in receipt of telephone calls, Text Messages and emails from people in my constituency and elsewhere, saying, get behind theresa. Ive been able to say to them absolutely, we are all behind theresa may. Grant schapps knows what he needs to do, he needs to get 48 signatures to trigger an election for the leadership of the conservative party. He says hes got up to 30, that could be eight. I suspect that he hasnt got anywhere near what he needs and thats why hes doing this tantrum at the moment. By the time mps gather here again next week, mrs mays team feel sure theyll have seen off this assault, at least for now. But privately, among tory mps, theres no longer much debate about whether mrs may will be driven out of office, just about when. Few seem truly to believe she can fight on through another election and just now shes looking so weakened that even lasting through to brexit, less than 18 months away, looks like a tall order. That accident prone speech was tough to watch, even for ministers who are thought to fancy herjob. She tried to revive her premiership and everything went wrong. Watching her and ambitious colleagues its hard to avoid thinking be careful what you wish for. John is at westminster for us now. How do you assess the outlook for mrs may . The Prime Minister goes on. She carries on, supported by her own strong sense of duty and its true that there has been today a long queue of tories keen to show their loyalty at theresa mays time of need. Many of them, for now, believe it would be madness to have a leadership contest with brexit at such a delicate stage. Many more, may be unhappy to march behind such a wounded leader, but theyd like the idea of tearing the party apart with no guaranteed outcome even less. Another Prime Minister, years ago, harold wilson, famously said, i know whats going on, im going on. Thats theresa may today. Shes trying to address what she says the needs of ha rd pressed trying to address what she says the needs of hard pressed households and do it with very little money to spare. Brexit is in danger of falling behind schedule. To a lot of people, including from the partys point of view, a good many tories, are sceptical to put it mildly that she can go the distance. To them, she can go the distance. To them, she looks like a leader on borrowed time and waiting for the next crisis, a crisis which somehow never seems to be very far away. John pienaar, many thanks. Its a key indicator of the health of the economy. Productivity the amount each worker produces per hour. Well, on that measure, the latest official figures show that the uk is lagging 15 below the average of other advanced economies. And, as our economics correspondent andy verity reports, that could have serious implications for the chancellor Philip Hammond as he prepares for next months budget. At this cumbria glass maker, growth starts with a glob of molten sand. At each stage of the process where its melted, shaped and transformed into luxury goblets the firms analysed how it can trim costs and boost the amount each worker produces, their productivity, from new glass recipes to Energy Saving furnace doors and that in turn can boost the amount each worker is paid. 0ur turnover has doubled and our productivity has tripled. We managed to reduced our energy costs by 30 byjust changing the style of doors. The furnaces didnt have any doors, they had to be invented and designed especially for us, but a small change thats brought about a massive benefit to the company. U nfortu nately, growth in productivity like that is now the exception, not the rule. Until the financial crisis, each worker produced a little more each year, but that engine of growth has stalled. If it had kept growing like it used to, each work would produce a fifth more than they do now. Were not the only ones struggling to boost productivity, japan and canada produce less per worker, but were now behind italy and france and far behind germany. That weak record helps explain why we have the lowest unemployment in 42 years, but Living Standards arent improving. The economy has been growing by adding workers, not by boosting the amount each worker produces. The big reason for that is a lack of investment by private companies and by the government. Its not good for britain and its not good for british people for the economy to be producing lower wage jobs of a lower quality. We need to invest in roads, in skills, in the kinds of investments that lead to high valuejobs, and into sectors in which those high value and those high earning jobs are going to take place. The treasury had been expecting productivity to grow, not to slump, and the official forecasts now look wrong, leaving the chancellor with a headache. With the economy projected to go more slowly the taxes went rolling as fast leaving him with a lot less room for manoeuvre and less money set aside in case of emergency. Room for manoeuvre and less money set aside in case of emergencym productivity doesnt pick up, Economic Growth wont pick up and the chancellor will have less tax revenue to play with, less than he thought and at means he will find it really difficult, more difficult than he thought it would be, to increase public pay, to give more money to the nhs, to sort out the social care problem. This really matters for my income and your income and also for the quality of public services. The chancellor have thought hed have a Rainy Day Fund of £26 billion. Money he could spend oi of £26 billion. Money he could spend or use for tax cuts, without busting his self imposed financial targets. When official figures revised at the nest next budget much of that money wont be there. Andy verity, bbc news. The trial of an Army Instructor accused of trying to kill his wife by tampering with her parachute has heard from an expert who was at the scene of her fall. Victoria cilliers suffered multiple injuries, when both her main and reserve parachutes failed to open, during a jump over salisbury plain. Duncan kennedy reports from Winchester Crown court. This is the first time the parachute at the centre of this case has been seen in public, it was worn by victoria cilliers. 0ne expert said hed never seen a main chute so tangled and said the reserve chute had ties, known as slinks, that were missing. The prosecution case is that Emile Cilliers, on the left here, sabotaged his wifes parachute by deliberately tangling the main chute and removing two slinks. The court heard Emile Cilliers wanted victoria cilliers dead so he could benefit from her Life Insurance policy and because he was having an affair with another woman. When mrs cilliers made herjump over this airfield, near salisbury, both her main and reserve chutes failed to open, she fell 4,000 feet, she suffered multiple injuries and only lived because she landed in the soft earth of a ploughed field. Ive had a look and this was so tightly knotted up. The jury has seen this video of an identical parachute. This expert, mark bayada, was the first to investigate victoria cilliers accident. The prosecution claim that Emile Cilliers kept the tampered parachute in his locker one day because of bad weather, when he should have handed it back in. But under cross examination from the defence, mr bayada admitted that other parachutists kept their rigs in their lockers also, and that to have done so might not have been unusual. The jury was told that Emile Cilliers also tried to kill his wife a few days earlier in their kitchen by tampering with this gas fixture. Mr cilliers denies two counts of attempted murder, the case continues next week. Duncan kennedy, bbc news, at Winchester Crown court. In las vegas, vigils have been held to remember the 58 people murdered in the deadliest mass shooting in modern american history. But some of those who survived the attack have since told the bbc they remain fiercely opposed to tighter gun control. 0ur correspondent, james cook, reports. Amazing grace, how sweet thy sound. In their darkest hour they have turned to their god. The massacre in las vegas struck at the heart of the Christian Country music community. These are patriotic americans. They are proud of their country and of its freedoms, including the right to carry a gun, even after the deadliest of mass shootings. We lost my uncle from a head wound on tuesday afternoon. Tara king is the niece of brett schwanbeck, who was 61 years old. My uncle was the funniest, funest, hillbilly, redneck, Country Music loving, good old boy. This was brett at the concert with his fiancee. Even though tighter gun laws may perhaps have saved his life, his niece is resolute in her beliefs. I believe in our right to bear arms. I believe we are the land of the free. We are here because we are free to make our choices. Your uncle has been shot and killed by a gunman. Yes. That doesnt change your view . Absolutely not. Are you kidding me, my uncle is all about. Hes all for guns. The worst thing that could happen, my uncle would just be in a fit. My whole entire family, if they were going to take our guns away. Grief, it seems, does not heal divisions in the United States. Guns and Country Music have always gone together, the cultures are intertwined. In Rural America you often hear people say that this lifestyle is maligned and misunderstood. And even in mourning, many people here are determined to defend their right to bear arms. For those americans, these crosses are the price of freedom. James cook, bbc news, las vegas. The number of women who have successive children taken into care in repeated Court Proceedings is on the rise, according to new research. Over the past decade in england, around 11,000 mothers had more than 30,000 children involved in care cases, with most of them removed from their homes. Many of the women have had major personal problems, such as Mental Health issues, abusive relationships and dependence on drink and drugs. Now the bbc has been given rare access to a project working with women to help them change their lives. 0ur social affairs correspondent, alison holt, reports. First thing in the morning in north london and support workers sophia meccano and maggie borham are already out searching for a woman whos concerning them. So its likely that if she has been to hospital its been not one thats in the local area, so getting some of that information has been quite difficult. They think shes having her phone calls monitored by a controlling partner and may be under great pressure to get pregnant. How many miscarriages has she had now . Shes had four miscarriages. 0k. And four births. Like all the women they work with, her children have been taken into care for their protection. They support mothers with chaotic lives, often involving drink and drugs, who have child after child removed. The first step will be to offer this woman long term contraception. Theres no answer at the last place she was staying, but they dont give up on any of the women. Her phones going to voice mail, so im just sending a text message to let her know that weve been. Were seeing women that have had three or four children removed from their care. But we also have women who have had six, seven children removed from their care. Weve one woman whos had 13 children removed from her care. After the first removal the time between the next pregnancy and repeat removals gets shorter and shorter. Many of the women have been victims of Domestic Violence and had difficult abusive childhoods themselves. Many have also grown up in care. Like ruby, not her real name, who had her son removed last year. When he was first taken into care it kind of felt like i would never get over it. It kind of felt like, oh my days, every day i was crying because i felt like everyone at that time around me was all about my son, all about him, him getting taken away, me being such a bad mother. But the pause team helped her sort out her housing, get back to work and it stopped her life spiralling downwards. Its just really important to have someone feel like they want to be there for you, not because theyve been told to, or because youre just another case that they need to work on and they need to close your file. It didnt feel like that with them. If you can remember what colour it was a minute ago but it has gone. By teaching the women new skills, for instance in classes like this and by tailoring support around the women, the programme has been shown to significantly reduce pregnancies amongst this group. Effectively cutting the number of children taken into council care. A government report estimates that would save some local authorities more than £2 million a year. Its about reducing the number of children that need to go into care and improving their outcomes, which not only is costly, but we know that a child born in these circumstances unfortunately immediately starts with a deficit. So we absolutely have to get at the point way before we start needing to remove children. Forjane, whos had two children taken into care, the work to build her skills and self esteem is giving her a new future. Weve also disguised her identity. That i see things with a positive outlook. I dont want to do college, but a positive has come out of it, ive got a certificate and i can now look forjobs and do things. So ive come a long way, a very long way in a short amount of time. You must be proud of yourself. Hell, yes. Similar schemes are now being piloted or planned across the uk. Alison holt, bbc news. President trump has refused to clarify his cryptic remarks that this may be the calm before the storm. The president keeping up the suspense the president keeping up the suspense there, do we know what he means . Initially, we thought that the president was teasing the White House Press corps rather than threatening military action when he talked about the calm before the storm when flanked by his generals. This white house spokesperson said he wasnt being mischievous and she added that the United States faces serious issues with iran and north korea. 0n iran, it seems almost certain that next week donald trump will desertify that nuclear agreement. There is a big truckers protest going here. I will battle on anyway. That he will desertify that agreement, which would mean, not ripping up the nuclear agreement, but certainly signalling his displeasure. 0n north korea, weve seen a rift this week between the president and the secretary of state. Tonight, the Spanish Football Team has been playing in its world cup qualifier against albania, in alicante. As well as the action on the pitch, the attention focused on one player the spanish defender, gerard pique, whos spoken out in support of the catalan referendum. James reynolds reports. Espana, espana. Tonight, spain has brought its football and its many arguments to this the coastal city of alicante. The National Sport reveals this countries divisions. Spains fundamental questions extends to these its fans and its national team. Can you be both catalan and spanish at the same time or must you choose between the two . Gerard pique, the teams most famous catalan player, faces these questions. He was booed here in training for having publicly supported the catalan referendum. In a tearful statement, he even offered to leave the squad. But tonight, protected by headphones, he got off the team bus ready to play. I dont really like him, to be honest. Why . Because hes mixing all the time sport and politics. But he won the world cup for spain . So it doesnt allow him to say everything he wants anywhere, you know. Translation he can do whatever he wants off the pitch, so long as he performs on the pitch. Translation im going to whistle him. Hes a hypocrite, who thinks one thing and says something else. Contrast that to 2010, when gerard pique and half a dozen more catalan players helped spain win the world cup, suspending the myth that catalan players wouldnt give their all in spanishjerseys. Tonight, at a bar in alicante, fans scrutinise piques performance. Translation pique always delivers. The problem with him is that he always wants to be on the front page. Gerard pique helped his team to victory here and qualification for next years world cup. And that really is spains entire point the whole country is better off when its catalans stay put.
