The funeral is held for liz dawn, who played Vera Duckworth in coronation street fellow stars payed tribute. Good evening and welcome to bbc news. Theresa may has insisted she has the full support of the cabinet to continue as Prime Minister. She was forced to defend herself after claims that about 30 conservative mps want a leadership election. The former Tory Party Chairman grant shapps is leading the attempt to unseat mrs may. He says five former cabinet ministers are among those calling for her to stand down, following her speech at the Party Conference this week, which was plagued by a series of mishaps. It only theresa may bodyguard could see off the political plots. Doing her best to look cool, getting on with business. What the country needs now is calm leadership. That is exactly what im providing. Im providing that with the full support of my cabinet. Thank you. Maybe, but not all ex cabinet colleague cabinet like grant shapps. He admits starring mutiny. Gathering names of other toure mps who want the Prime Minister gone and gone quickly. Over a period of time, since the general election, went so badly wrong. There have been quite a lot of colleagues who feel that we might now be better served by having a leadership election sooner rather than later. This was really to try and gather those people together in order to be able to say that to her. Grant shapps claims that 30 mps support a plan to get theresa may out and force a leadership contest, including five former ministers. Under tory rules it takes 48 mps to force a vote of no confidence, if she loses that vote she must resign. Allies say rebels dont have numbers. I was in the hall when the conservative party rose as one to give her a thunderous standing ovation, and ive also been in receipt of telephone calls, text m essa 9 es receipt of telephone calls, Text Messages and e mails from people in my constituency and elsewhere saying get behind theresa may. Im saying, absolutely we are behind theresa may. Grant shapps knows what he needs to do, he needs to get 48 signatures to trigger a election for the leadership. I suspect he hasnt got anywhere near what he needs and thatis got anywhere near what he needs and that is why he is doing this tantrum at the moment. Overtime mps gather here again next week, theresa mays tea m here again next week, theresa mays team feel they are sure to have seen of this assault, at least for now. But privately among tory mps there is not much debate about whether she will be driven out of office, but when. Few truly believe she can fight on through another election and just now she is looking so weakened that even lasting three to brexit, less than 18 months away, looks like a tall order. That accident prone speech was tough to watch, even for ministers who are thought to fancy her job. Watch, even for ministers who are thought to fancy herjob. She tried to revive her premiership and . 722; as; liz f 57275275 5. 27. 7. . 722; as; liz f 57277777 5. 27. 7 her ambitious colleagues, i is avoid itious colleagues, i is avoid thinking lleagues, i is avoid thinking be|gues, i is avoid thinking be gin es, 3 what to avoid thinking be careful what you wish for. How unpopular has grant shapps made himself . Certainly he is not very popular with many of his colleagues at the moment. There is a conservative whatsapp application for mps conservative whatsapp application formps and a conservative whatsapp application for mps and a lot of that has been full of abuse directed at grant shapps. In addition to that, off the record, some mps are using words like crazy and mad, not to describe by any means his state of mind. But actually to say, look, politics as in comedy is totally reliant on timing, getting things right matters on when you designing. They feel by going over the top now, what grant shapps is doing is providing a level of dangerfor the shapps is doing is providing a level of danger for the party, shapps is doing is providing a level of dangerfor the party, because this is in the middle of brexit negotiations. This might be strengthening the hand of eu negotiators if theresa may looks weaker, it could also be boosting the popularity ofjeremy gordon if the popularity ofjeremy gordon if the party looks divided. The timing is wrong jeremy corbyn. Many feel theresa may shouldnt be fighting the next election, would like to see her go after the preps that negotiations are completed in 2019. But there are a few that want to go right now and plans the party into a potential three month leadership contest. But there are supporters of grant shapps, they are keeping pretty quiet, which is no imminent danger evidenced by the lack of grant shapps supporters during the tv studios at the moment. But off the record, many are saying that it is just the record, many are saying that it isjust a the record, many are saying that it is just a matter of when theresa may is just a matter of when theresa may is finished and saying that that is Getting Better to done sooner. In terms of numbers, the level of support he has is farfarfewer than the level of mps required to trigger a leadership contest. You need 48 conservative mps to effectively called the no confidence in theresa may, and at best, even using grant shapps estimate he has around 30. Thank you. We will find out how this story is covered this evening at 10 40pm in the papers. My guess our assistant Political Editor at the huffington post. And a former conservative adviser. Uk productivity fell in the three months tojune, for the Second Quarter in a row. The measure which is an important benchmark of the economys efficiency, dropped by nought point one . The office for National Statistics says productivity the amount each worker produces per hour is lagging behind the Uks International competitors. Uk productivity is now more than 15 below the average of other major advanced economies below in 2016. At this glass maker, the process sta rts at this glass maker, the process starts with a glob of malton sound, when it is transferred into it goblet. Their productivity, from new glass recipes to Energy Saving furnaces. That in turn can boost the amount that each worker is paid. Our turnover has doubled and our productivity has tripled. There are lots of small things and life things we can do weekend lower our energy costs by 30 by changing the style of doors. The furnaces didnt have any doors they had to be freshly designed for us. But a small change has brought around a massive benefit for the company. Unfortunately that is the exception not the rule. Before the crisis is worker used to produce more each year as employees invested in technology and training. But now it is no higher than it was a decade ago. If it keeps going like to did before the crisis, we would be producing a dismal poll worker than we do now. Were not the only one struggling to bridges productivity. Japan and canada produce less per worker, but we are 110w produce less per worker, but we are now behind italy, france and far behind germany. Productivity has been slipping backwards ever since the financial crisis. That means jobs that allow paid and have to work more hours. Not only that, were slipping behind other countries. That will make it difficult for britain to grow when. But it will also make it really difficult for brits to look forward to better jobs. Really difficult for brits to look forward to betterjobs. The look forward to betterjobs. The look forward to better wages. The treasury had been expecting productivity to grow, notjust slump. And the official forecasts 110w slump. And the official forecasts now look wrong, leaving the chancellor with a headache. With the economy to projected more slowly, the taxes when brolin is fast, leaving him with a lot less room to remove your, and less money set aside in emergency. The chancellor had thought that he would have a Rainy Day Fund of £26 billion. Money he could spend or use the tax cuts without busting his self imposed financial targets. When official figures are revised at the next budget, much of that money wont be there. Professor of business at warwick business school. Thank you for joining warwick business school. Thank you forjoining us. Why is our productivity falling . It is not because were lazy, is it . No, i think in terms of the figures that we re think in terms of the figures that were announced today, there are two main causes. The first is that we have a Labour Market which is very good at getting people into, if you like, entry level jobs. Good at getting people into, if you like, entry leveljobs. Getting people off unemployment and into work. They are not low productivity people but low productivityjobs. If you compare us with france or germany, we have lower youth unemployment, but we have lower productivity because we have more people doing low productivityjobs. The other main factor in terms of the announcement today and your clip before showed this, is we are not investing enough. There is so much uncertainty in the economy since the brexit referendum, that businesses are nervous about investing and as a result of that the amount per worker per hour is going down, or at least not rising. Importers of leaving the eu will of course say that brexit will bring with it opportunities to have our own trade deals. When might we start to see the value of that, if it exists, kicking in . Are not at all convinced it will. But nevertheless, what we have to get over is this period of uncertainty over is this period of uncertainty over how long the transition period will be, whats going to be, what the nature of brexit will be, assuming brexit still happens, before businesses can start planning for long Term Investment that will in turn generate productivity growth. How concerned are you that this is a fall for a second court in a row, when does it start to become really worrying . I think it is being really worrying . I think it is being really worrying . I think it is being really worrying for a long time. There are a lot of factors at play here, but another one is this set of fa ns here, but another one is this set of fans who are caught in a double bind between on the one hand, they cant generate product productivity growth to access finance to invest further performance, and at the same time because their productivity is low, they cant raise the finance to do what they need to do. Theres been a problem of the uk economy for a while. So its a complicated mix of circumstances, set against that background, what can the government do, can businesses do to improve things . The government could create more certainty and it could invest in skills. It can also look at ways of unlocking access to finance for Small Businesses who want to invest, who want to generate more productivity growth and a struggling to raise the capital, especially in regions outside london. How likely are they likely to do that when theyve got so many other pressures on them and we understand that this £26 billion that Philip Hammond thought he got might now be in peril because of the direction of the economy . I think youve summed up perfectly. What we have at the moment is a situation where we are behind some of the other leading g 7 economies in terms of productivity growth, and all the uncertainty of the brexit has meant that significantly worse. Presenters a lwa ys significantly worse. Presenters always like it when their guests complement them you can come back any time. Thank you very much. So shallow a father has lost his claim for damages against an ivf clinic after his ex partner forged his signature in order to have a child. The man had been seeking more than a Million Pounds to pay for his daughters private education and her wedding. Helena lee reports from the high court in central london. The couple already had one child through at the idea. She forged signature to a private clinic in london to defrost embryos they created together. He says its had a huge impact on the relationship with his daughter. He took the case to court, claiming the clinic was in breach of. The man was asking the clinic to pay him more than £1 million for the upbringing of his daughterfor million for the upbringing of his daughter for private school fees, holidays and her wedding. Thejudge said that even though he is lost his case today, his judgment should be seen as a case today, his judgment should be seen as a complete personal and moral vindication of the father. The same, he said, cannot be said for the mother. Idf hammersmith says it is now tightened its procedures to make sure this doesnt happen again. We are pleased that the judge ruled in ourfavour, we are pleased that the judge ruled in our favour, that we were not negligent and dismissed the case against the clinic. It is a matter of law if she forged the signature we did not have his written consent. Moving forward we will contact both parties on this one happen again. This wasnt about money, this was about justice he this wasnt about money, this was aboutjustice he said. He plans to appeal against the decision today not to award him damages. The cata la n not to award him damages. The Catalan Leader says he will speak a day later than planned. He was expected to address the parliament on monday, Carles Puigdemont. That was before the court suspended those proceedings. Meanwhile they have published what they say is the final result of the referendum. More than 90 are said to have supported independence, the turnout was less than 50 . Spain has also apologised for the first time injured people who tried to stop the vote. This is a little of what was said. Translation i said this very clearly before. They were following an order, they were ordered to seize ballot boxes. If there were any incidents, and there were, and if people were injured, evidently we are all sorry. The government was to make an appeal in order for Carles Puigdemont to return to legality and within the legal framework. Joining us now is a lecturer for hispanic studies at the university of exeter. Thank you forjoining us. How much more or less likely is a declaration of independence by catalonia now after what youve seen in the last few days . Good evening. It is very difficult to know actually. 0n the one hand it looks very unlikely that the Catalan Government declares independence in the parliament on tuesday. 0n the other hand however, at this moment the Catalan Government really needs to make a move. If they dont make a move, what would they do . I would say that independence is a possibility, however we have seen today, how some businesses are planning to leave catalonia, and i think that will play a role in the next few days. So, i would say that we should really wait and see. It is difficult to note even though it is a possibility. The fact that banks are saying they might want to get out of that region and move their headquarters elsewhere, will that affect the thinking of the regional president . 0da, iam affect the thinking of the regional president . 0da, i am so sorry. Lets try that again. We lost the picture, it all froze. I will ask again. The decision by banks to move out of catalonia, how will that affect those in favour of independence . I think it has and will have a negative impact and reduces stability that independence is declared on tuesday. The fact that banks are leaving the region will have a negative impact. However, the government needs leveraged the negotiations. Declaring independence would offer them leveraged in this situation and offer the possibility of international mediation. The fact that the banks are planning to move its base, their base, is that they have seen the possibility of independence as a reality. They can also energise the supporters of independence. What are the options open to the Central Government to stop this from happening . Were not doing very well, it has happened i am so sorry. Doing very well, it has happened i am so sorry. President trump is planning to abandon the nuclear deal with iran according to reports in washington. If he does it could pave the way for congress to reimpose economic sanctions on iran. Mr trump claims the iranians have not lived up to the iranians have not lived up to the spirit of the agreement. We can speak to a correspondent in washington. He likes to tease, what does he mean . I think he is going to decertify the Iranian Nuclear deal next week, next thursday, i think it will happen. That doesnt mean the deal is ripped up. Part of trumps strategy is not only to pursue the America First foreign policy, but also rollback 0bama policy abroad and at home. The iranians nuclear deal was a signature achievement of the 0bama administration. Donald trump would like to rip it up but its not for him to do that. If it decertify s then it goes to congress and they have 60 days to decide whether or not to reimpose sanctions that were lifted under this agreement. Sanctions relief was why tehran cider before it. I think there are enough republicans those who believe this deal is in the National Interest to keep america in it and not reimpose sanctions. Even though donald trump will signal his displeasure, he will not succeed in ripping up the accord. Where will it leave him in terms of being out of step with International Partners who are part of those negotiations as well . He is out of step with a lot of people on this. The European Union today said, you have got to abide by the terms, not least because iran is, its working. They are compline in with this nuclear agreement. You hear similar things said on capitol hill, notjust from democrats, who supported the deal in the first place, but some republicans who were sceptical. You also hear those voices within the trump administration. His National Security team, people like james mattis, mad dogmatics, the former general who is now defence secretary. He also thinks its in the best interests. Mad dog james mattis. Senators have been told on congress not to repeal the bill. I think their calls are being referred with a receptive audience. What have iran said . Tehran has said that if america had rip up the accord then they would immediately re energise they would immediately re energise the nuclear programme, another reason why americas partners, especially britain and some of Americas Nuclear partners dont think it would be wise to end the landmark agreement. Nick bryant in washington, thank you. More now on rumours of a leadership challenge against theresa may, galvanised by calls for her to resign by conservative Party Chairman. The Prime Minister says she has the full support of her cabinet and many mps have been quick to agree. Its the latest episode in a turbulent year for the Prime Minister. Lets take a look at some of those bumps in the road, all beginning with her u turn on social care spending during the election campaign. She said, nothing has changed, repeatedly, but many disagreed. She called the election in the hope of a resounding victory but instead lost the slim majority she had inherited. She made it back into number ten but only after a deal with the dup. A few days later was the visit to grenfell tower, devastated by a blaze that shocked the world, but she was met with booing and accusation she didnt meet any victims. Last month, there was that borisjohnson article. The foreign secretary was seen by some to be undermining mrs mays authority while others saw it as a thinly veiled leadership challenge. This week, a Conference Speech that is hard to forget. The Prime Minister faced setbacks outside her control, a prankster, a coughing fit and a slogan at villa park as she spoke. Conservative mps have hit the airways today. I think the Prime Minister has done a fantasticjob this week. I think the conservative party and conservative mps and those in the country, and importantly voters are focused on just one thing, making sure the Prime Minister can be supported. We have a big job at hand and she will be leading the country through the brexit negotiations for as long as she wants. I think the vast majority of mps, conservative mps, are supporting her. Its irritating, quite frankly. It started off as a pathetic attempt, more of a tantrum than a coup. It started off with below 30 numbers. It could be ten, we dont know how many hes got, but we dont know how many hes got, but we know it isnt 48, and that is needed to trigger a leadership election. We dont want in early leadership election or early general election. Studio just some of the mps coming to the defence of the Prime Minister today. Our correspondent sarah harris has been to the Prime Ministers constituency to the Prime Ministers constituency to see if she enjoys support from residents. The knives may be out for the Prime Minister, but close to theresa mays home in this berkshire village, the local butcher says hes behind the maidenhead mp, even if her Conference Speech was beset by u nfortu nate her Conference Speech was beset by unfortunate distractions. We can all stutter and cough, its perfectly natural. And i think its very unfairfrom some natural. And i think its very unfair from some of the Party Members to have jumped unfair from some of the Party Members to havejumped on unfair from some of the Party Members to have jumped on and see unfair from some of the Party Members to havejumped on and see it asa members to havejumped on and see it as a weakness. I dont think it is. At the village hall, Senior Citizens are keen to paint a picture of a strong Prime Ministers. Most remain loyal, saying that she is doing a sterling job. Despite a bad cold that many of her neighbours are also struggling with. It was certainly unfairto struggling with. It was certainly unfair to comment about the figures falling off the back, numbers falling off the back, numbers falling off the back. It had nothing to do with what she said, did it . Half her trouble is everybody has been trying to. They want to be there instead, nobody has been sticking up for her. In the berkshire countryside, the mp for 20 yea rs has berkshire countryside, the mp for 20 years has her constituency eating out of her hand. But in every flock, there is a black sheep. And its no different here. I dont think shes doing thejob. She is always different here. I dont think shes doing the job. She is always saying she will do this, that and the other for the poorer people, which never happens. Not an image shared by many in this neck of the woods. Loyalty is the watchword here. Theresa may spoke publicly for the first time at a Charity Coffee morning here at her maidenhead constituency. The people here supporting her are advising her to keep calm and carry on. Studio several high street retailers including tesco and mothercare have stopped selling baby sleep position is, also known as baby nest, because of their concerns over safety. How to make sure your baby stays in the same position. A sleep position, moulding itself around your baby to keep it in position. Today some shops have stopped selling them after concerns from america it could lead to suffocation. Following advice from the Health Regulator in the us, john lewis and mothercare, which each sold one baby sleep position, have withdrawn from sale. Ebay and tesco, who previously sold them on their websites through third party suppliers, will not be selling them online. 12 infant deaths in the us have been linked to the sleep position. Most of the parents here today have said they are often anxious when deciding what equipment to use for their babies. They said todays story had an impact. Its best to follow the advice given by their health care professionals. Its quite worrying to know if you are doing the right thing, because you want to not put them in any danger whatsoever. Unfortunately this is one of those badly positioned tragedies. We cant blame specific itemsjust positioned tragedies. We cant blame specific items just because there has been something happen because of it. With a lack of sleep, you almost desperate as a mother to do anything to make your baby sleep better. Definitely an article like that highlighting the dangers, i think it would make you think, its not worth it. You can go without the sleep. Would make you think, its not worth it. You can go without the sleep charity which advises the nhs has these recommendations. Babies are safest lying on firm surfaces. They can move like any other human but they dont have as good control of their bodies at a young age as adults do, so they occasionally get themselves into trouble and cant get out of again. Sleep is especially precious for newborn babies. Making sure its healthy and co mforta ble babies. Making sure its healthy and comfortable is just as important. While eliminating any danger is crucial. The sale of almost all ivory, including antique items, would be banned under plans set out by the government to end elephant poaching. The environment secretary michael gove has announced a three month consultation on the proposals. Trade in Musical Instruments and some cultural objects would still be allowed. Panna ghosh reports. V0|ceover a bonfire of tusks, taken from 6000 elephants, slaughtered in kenya for their ivory. Their number has declined by almost a third in the last decade and around 20,000 are killed each year. The government says that it would like to ban ivory sales in the uk and has launched a 12 week consultation on its plan. Thousands of elephants are being killed every year simply to fuel the illegal ivory trade. We have got to act. So today im announcing consultation on a total ban for ivery products, to ensure that we stamp out this evil trade and make sure that one of the most iconic and beautiful animals in the world is there for the next generation. Chiswick auctions sells ivory objects that are more than 100 years old. The current rules allow the trade in objects created before 1947, such as these 18th century miniature portraits and these figures. Under the new proposals, their sale would be banned, and thats something the antiques industry thinks is unfair. If you criminalise something, this underground market may appear, this black market, and you cant control that. Will it stop the trade at large of illegal ivory and the current poaching . I dont see it. These objects are not inexpensive. They are not being sold as ivory, they are being sold as antique and artworks, and they are paid for, heftily, as objects of that type. The new proposals would still allow the sale works of art, or objects of cultural or historic value. There is some concern that such exemptions could become loopholes for the antiques industry but overall, conservation groups are pleased. We really want to see this put in place within a year, so that when they host the london conference on illegal wildlife trade next year, they can demonstrate that they are a Global Leader in tackling illegal wildlife trade. If the government does ban on ivory sales, britain willjoin the us and china, who have made similar commitments recently, a move that could help save elephants from extinction in many parts of africa. Simon mccoy did say that the speech would be discussed in more detail later in the bulletin. Much later, norman smith regurgitated the issues mrs may had faced. The real danger for mrs may. Only right at the end was there any mention of the content of there any mention of the content of the speech. Then mr smith commented that these issues had undermined mrs mays authority. This is not the kind of political discussion and analysis i would expect from the bbcs deputy Political Editor. Excuse me will you stop showing that footage of theresa may coughing. Its disgraceful. Just give her a break. You wouldnt be doing that
