Rescuers in mexico are desperately searching for survivors after a huge earthquake caused widespread damage in the capital mexico city and surrounding areas. More than 200 people have been killed, including more than 20 children who died when their Primary School collapsed. 30 children are still missing and the death toll is expected to rise. The earthquake struck exactly 32 years to the day after mexicos worst ever quake which killed 10,000 people. There are some distressing images in this report from jon donnison. Overnight in mexico city, a desperate race against time to try and save lives. Much of the focus on this flattened Primary School where at least 20 children were killed and dozens more are still missing. Family and friends clinging to hope their loved ones might still be pulled out alive. Translation the only thing weve been told is to go to the hospitals to check if our family members are there. But my family has gone and there is no news of our relatives. In some places sniffer dogs have been brought in to try and locate people who might be trapped. But shifting the rubble is going to take time. The mexican president visited the Primary School to see the rescue Operation First hand. Translation as of now 22 bodies have been found including two adults. There are 30 children missing, eight adults still missing and the rescue efforts are ongoing. And, remarkably, those efforts are paying off. Several children pulled from the wreckage. In daylight, the scale of the damage across mexico city is even more striking. And all this in a city of more than 20 million, with one of the highest population densities in the world. It seems inevitable the death toll will go up. This is the moment the earthquake hit at lunchtime yesterday. This massive city looking like it was under attack. You were lucky if you got out alive. This is my building, i was inside the building when it collapsed. We got to the bottom and everything came around us. Everything is gone. This cctv film is from a Shopping Centre as the roof begins to collapse. This woman getting out of the way not a moment too soon. And for those who survived, theyre going to need help. Translation well need antibiotics, wooden boards, ropes. Blankets, food, medical help. Much of mexico city is now in ruins. But the epicentre of this massive quake was some 75 miles away. In those more remote communities the situation could be even worse. Jon donnison, bbc news. Ioan grillo is a journalist who lives in mexico city. He joins me now on webcam. As hours pass. The desperate situation. People still alive under the rubble . Certainly. Hundreds, possibly thousands. People can survive for a long time. In haiti, that earthquake, a young boy survived for 27 days. A lot of people are under there. And many buildings. The scale is immense. We have seen some reports about some of the children buried under rubble, are taking to whatsapp to try to contact relatives. Can you confirm . People have been talking about that, outside schools. A lot of rumours floating around. I have not seen any signals from childs. But some people have said that has happened. They said that phone signals have been very sporadic. It is a chance that people are sending messages from under the rubble to loved ones. And for people of certain age, it is to bring back memories of a terrifying moment. People said deaths on that scale would never happen again, and buildings would be safe . That has not happened. Construction has seen improvements, i was under 20th floor yesterday and it survived. The suspension made it move. It felt very bad. But it survived. But many are pre 1935 earthquake, these very bad. But it survived. But many are pre1935 earthquake, these are very unpredictable. The school that went down. That was a tragedy, but you see all sorts of these buildings collapse. And where exactly where you . When collapse. And where exactly where you . When it collapse. And where exactly where you . When it hit . I was on the 20th floor of a tower block. An office. It was moving around massively. Things were falling, shelves, i wa nted things were falling, shelves, i wanted to run for my life. But you had to wait for the building authorities to say that you could evacuate. Eventually, we were allowed to walk down the 20 staircases, see the chaos of millions of people on the street at the same time. Just all over the place. Thank you forjoining me. Lets speak now to dr stephen hicks, a seismologist at the university of southampton. As we have been hearing, earthquakes are not unusual at this part of the world. Why is mexico city so vulnerable . Mexico city, it is a huge populated region. It is located on an old lake bed. Thousands of yea rs on an old lake bed. Thousands of years ago, a lake here. It is built ona years ago, a lake here. It is built on a very thick layer of soil. And that can shake the area. Like jelly ina that can shake the area. Like jelly in a bowl. Waves get trapped. Causing a very high degree of shaking. And what does that mean for the buildings, because of previous experience, they would have to keep that in mind . Particularly, earthquakes at mexico occur closer to the coastline. I do not think the buildings were designed for this particular sort of earthquake, the ru ptu re particular sort of earthquake, the rupture has occurred pretty close to mexico city. 50km deep. That has really caused some of those buildings to collapse, that may not have been retrofit, designed to the standards for the sort of earthquake. Three tetonic plates affecting mexico. What has happened . Why was this so devastating . Mexico is located on the you have got the pacific crust. 0ceanic crusts. Colliding with the north american plate. And windows, aids, it sinks deeper in the earth. When it bends. It really concentrates the stresses on the region. That is why we think this earthquake a card. Almost on the kink of the plate. Net has been good of you to give us your time. Thank you. Yesterdays earthquake came on the 30th anniversary of another major earthquake in mexico city, which killed over 10,000 people. With me is david alder, who was working in mexico city in 1985. You were there. What are your memories . I was not there. But i worked a lot on earthquakes and how Civil Society has responded. I think it is important to emphasise as we have learned so much since the g re nfell tower have learned so much since the Grenfell Tower fire, all of the tragedies are political. It is important to look at that, as well as the way that politicians have failed citizens, making sure that these buildings are to stand on. That is your belief . What are we talking about . Cost cutting . We are talking about . Cost cutting . We are talking about . Cost cutting . We are talking about School Buildings . We do not know the skill of the damage. What has got a lot of coverage recently, the damage being done to more upscale neighbourhoods. With 1985 become mass devastation on the periphery. To understand the political context, i think it is important to emphasise that law in mexico is a negotiation. Between communities, leaders, often involving a lot of back door deals. What rights are guaranteed . Right to the city charter . These things are co nsta ntly the city charter . These things are constantly debated. And what about the right of a seven year old to get to eight . Where does it stop . The right of a seven year old to get to eight . Where does it stop7m the right of a seven year old to get to eight . Where does it stop . It is going to be interesting and troubling to see the political leaders of mexico shift blame, and accept the buck has to stop with certain people. The past interviewee said many buildings were built before 1985, but at this stage it is important to emphasise that the buck needs to stop somewhere. Just looking at these pictures, having looked at 1985, are you surprised by the level of devastation that we seem to be seeing . Absolutely not. It is difficult to assess the scale of devastation that we did not see. A20 of devastation that we did not see. A 20 storey building didnt fall. And if you look at the centre of the city, some of the billionaires in this regulated zone, much better protected buildings. It is no surprise that we have got a lot of informal activity that slips under the radar. As with grenfell, the political leaders fail to protect citizens. Thank you. Thank you. The companies have said this is difficult, the government said you are the Technological Companies, you have got to get technology solutions. The difficulty, from the moment that this what the government wants to tighten up. Those first couple of hours are important. It gets spread. The government wants to get these things are we, in the initial time frame. Some talk about regulators, fines. Legislation, these Big Companies can absorb the cash implications but i think more of the issue for them is public perception. A lot of this is about public perception. The companies are worrying about the brand. The public engaging with them. And they also worry that the public could think they are being spied on. So they are worried about going too far, in terms of monitoring content. And thatis terms of monitoring content. And that is something that they are sensitive about. Thank you.
