Itself or its allies, we will have no choice but to destroy north korea. Hurricane maria strengthens as it sweeps west across the caribbean. The Virgin Islands and puerto rico are facing a potentially catastrophic impact. Live from our studios in singapore and london, this is bbc world news. Its newsday. Its 1 00am in london, 8 00am in the morning in singapore and 7 00pm in the evening in mexico, where a 7. 1 magnitude earthquake has struck the centre of the country, killing at least 130 people. In the capital, mexico city, dozens of buildings have collapsed, with reports of many people trapped beneath the rubble. Bbc mundos Juan Paullier is in mexico city. He described what happened. There was also extensive damage in the neighbouring states. This is the scene here in mexico city just a few this is the scene here in mexico cityjust a few minutes after an earthquake of 6. 8 magnitude struck the capital. I have been with our signal on my phone since then so i dont know the extent of the damage. What i do know is that dozens of people are desperately removing rubble here because they believe someone rubble here because they believe someone is trapped. 0ur correspondentjames cook has this report. Mexico city is one of the most densely packed places on earth. More than 20 Million People live in this metropolis. Any powerful earthquake here is especially devastating. The huge tremor struck around lunchtime, prompting panic. These mobile phone pictures show what appear to be columns of dust from collapsed buildings. Fires have been reported, and people are being urged not to smoke, because of the danger from gas leaks. And, already, rescue work is underway. It is not clear how many people may be trapped. This was not even the epicentre. Seismologists say that was 70 miles to the south east, in neighbouring puebla province. These distressing pictures appear to show buildings collapsing in the aftermath of the quake. Many people had fled into the streets, but not everyone. This damage happened on the anniversary of the devastating 1985 earthquake. This morning, many residents had taken part in an emergency drill, preparing for exactly this event. Now, 19 september will be remembered in mexico city for not one, but two disasters. David luhnow is the latin america editor for the wall streetjournal, and hejoins me now on the line from mexico city. David, just tell us where you were when the earthquake struck. David, just tell us where you were when the earthquake strucklj david, just tell us where you were when the earthquake struck. I was on a tennis court. I was with my 11 year old son taking a tennis lesson with him when we heard the earthquake alarm go off. Within two 01 earthquake alarm go off. Within two or three seconds the ground started shaking pretty heavily. I have lived in mexico and long time and i have been through many earthquakes. But this one was a lot stronger. We just had an 8. 1 earthquake tulisa go but that was off the coast of mexico. This was 60 miles away and quite a shallow earthquake. So it really felt strong. What were your instincts at that point, david . Well, just protect my little boy and make sure we were clear of anything that might fall. Like those above the Tennis Courts were swinging so violently i was concerned they were going to fall. The light posts. Then we saw the cloud of dust rising up then we saw the cloud of dust rising up above the parts of the city in what appeared to be part of the buildings collapsing. You started to hear sirens going off, ambulances, helicopters flying. You just created descends quickly that something very wrong had just happened. As a journalist and editor for the wall streetjournal, when did you think about how much of a big event this would be, ori about how much of a big event this would be, or i should say, rather, a disaster in terms of the devastation . We have now heard about 130 people have lost their lives. Yes, and the toll is sure to rise. I immediately told my son that we were going to have to walk back to. Fortu nately we going to have to walk back to. Fortunately we live close by. My work is close by. I got on twitter on the way, started interviewing people on the way home. I think for my 11 year old it was a lesson in real life journalism. My 11 year old it was a lesson in real lifejournalism. Managed my 11 year old it was a lesson in real life journalism. Managed to get to the office, deliver my son safely and start to work. We have had quite and start to work. We have had quite a few disasters recently, three hurricane is in the region and two big earthquake. The irony of todays is it is on the 32nd anniversary to the day of the 8. 1 earthquake that killed in 1985. It came within one hour of the commemoration of the earthquake by holding an earthquake drill. So when the same sound went off 45 minutes later residents thought it was part of the drill. And they soon realised it wasnt when everything started to shake violently. It is interesting you make the point because i was wondering whether or not people were confused, the fact that they were aware that this earthquake was going to happen today, and then perhaps the court offguard when a secondary signal of a warning sign, thinking it might not be the real thing. They we re it might not be the real thing. They were confused. This signal gave much shorter notice than before. Mexico after 1985 developed a very good alarm system that generally gives you about a minutes warning when the earthquakes happen off the Mexico Pacific coast. This earthquake was so close it only gave people around two or three seconds. So when it went off people didnt have a lot of time and i think that is what is going to make the death toll rise a lot more. A lot of the buildings we have seen collapsed, we have heard reports of primary schools with children inside that have collapsed. We hope they are not true. We are doing our best to check them out. A very sad day for mexico. In 1980 510,000 people were killed in the devastating earthquake that we are speaking about. 1985, 10,000 people. It struck on tuesday afternoon today and the latest reports are that 130 people have lost their lives. I want to ask you know what has happened, and what is happening around you . Well, several of my reporters are in the city trying to go to sites with reports of large building collapses. 0ne trying to go to sites with reports of large building collapses. One of the impressive things about living ina the impressive things about living in a city like mexico city is how people respond in a disaster like this. They are very accustomed to earthquake. Within minutes literally of the earthquake, and buildings falling, you had residents out on the street lining up to carry rubble away in little makeshift buckets, forming human chains, trying to get survivors. Many people have been pulled alive from the rubble, so thatis pulled alive from the rubble, so that is an encouraging sign. It has really been impressive to watch the people of this city come together to try to help each other out. So now we are trying to separate fact from fiction, get some of the stories and stay safe. Two of my reporters have told me that apartment quarters are not habitable. They will have to find a new place to live. While eve ryo ne find a new place to live. While everyone is trying to do theirjob, they are dealing with their own personal issues as well. And we are hearing the reports as well that there has been an immense loss of telecommunications and electricity in the area, there are reported gas lea ks. As we in the area, there are reported gas leaks. As we are speaking we are showing our he was the images from the surrounding areas of mexico city, you can see the sheer devastation this earthquake has caused. Our viewers. Devastation this earthquake has caused. Ourviewers. Ijust wonder if you have heard anything with regards to any orchestration on the part of government or authorities, if there has been some sort of a statement. We have heard some lines of information from the mexican president. But very little on that. The mexican president was visiting the Southern States when the earthquake hit. Those were the areas hurt by the previous earthquake two weeks ago. He turned around and came back to mexico city. The mexican army has a very well known emergency plan they have 110w well known emergency plan they have now implemented. You are starting to see soldiers out in the street. You are sea rescue workers see soldiers out in the street. You are sea rescue workers and ambulance workers. 1985 was a traumatic experience. Seeing. It left most feeling that our government let them down. It was a single party state at the time. Many say that it led to the time. Many say that it led to the democratisation of mexico. The mexico government is much more wary of how they are perceived to respond to disasters like this. And with twitter and Everything Else it is ha rd twitter and Everything Else it is hard for people to hide things like this. Everyone gets information quickly and respond more quickly than in the past. David, we are grateful for your time, than in the past. David, we are gratefulfor your time, and than in the past. David, we are grateful for your time, and for you sharing your stories with us. We are grateful that you and your son are safe and our thoughts are with the people of mexico city. Thank you. Our other top story donald trump has delivered his maiden speech to the Un General Assembly. Nothing was off limits. North korea, iran and venezuela were all in the firing line. Mr trump vowed to totally destroy north korea if it threatens the us. What he said about the north Korean Leader kim jong un was quite extraordinary. Have a listen. The United States has great strength and patience. But if it is forced to defend itself or its allies, we will have no choice but to totally destroy north korea. rocket man is on a suicide mission, for himself and for his regime. The United States is ready, willing and able, but hopefully this will not be necessary. Thats what United Nations is all about. Thats what United Nations is for. Lets see how they do. It is time for north korea to realise that the denuclearisation is its only acceptable future. I spoke to charles edel earlier, who served in the us state department, and asked him for his take on trumps tough talk. Well, i think that these are not. This is not the fire and fury that we heard earlier. I think that this is actually a piece with the maximum pressure that the administration has been stressing all along. And i think its important to note that, while you had the normal trump rhetorical flares, to put it mildly, of rocket man, what he said was the United States stood ready, willing and able. But hopefully would not have to use kinetic military options. And from rocket man, what are the implications . Could we see another rocket launch from pyongyang, and kimjong un . Look, its as i said previously on the show, i think its a bit of a fools errand to ever guess what pyongyang will do. But yes, i think you will probably see further provocations from pyongyang. What i think, though, is interesting, is what President Trump laid out was in effect in tracking with a strategy they have put out between secretary mattis and secretary tillerson about pressure. He praised the un for their efforts, unanimous vote of 15 0, and said lets see what the un can do. I think theyre working, still hoping that the sanctions that were just past will be actually put into effect and implemented. And what was interesting was he put countries on notice that they were looking to see if they would actually carry them out. Thats calling out china, if not by name. In his first speech to the Un General Assembly, french president macron strongly defended the paris climate accord. Mr macron warned that the planet was starting to take revenge on man, and said extreme weather events would erase the traditional differences between north and south. Russia says its Syrian Army Allies have been coming underfire from us backed rebels in the east of the country. Both the syrian army and the american backed kurdish and arab forces are seeking to seize territory from so called Islamic State around the city of deir ez zour. There have been fears that they might start to clash with each other. The retailer toys r us has filed for bankruptcy protection in the United States and canada as the firm tries to restructure major debts of more than 5. 5 billion. The company is blaming a rise in Online Shopping for its problems. Toys r us asia, which is financially independent from all other toys r us, says it is not affected and its stores will stay open for business. Youre watching newsday on the bbc. Still to come on the programme more from mexico city, where an earthquake has left more than 130 people dead and brought down around 30 buildings. Well have the very latest on the search for survivors. 30 hours after the earthquake that devastated mexico city, benjohnson, the fastest r earth, benjohnson, the fastest man on earth, is flying back home in disgrace. I am just earth, is flying back home in disgrace. I amjust happy earth, is flying back home in disgrace. I am just happy that justice is served. It is a simple fa ct justice is served. It is a simple fact that this morning these people we re fact that this morning these people were in their homes. Tonight those homes had been burnt down by serbian soldiers and police. All of the taliban positions along here have been strengthened, presumably in case the americans invade. It is no use having a secret service which cannot preserve its own secrets against the world, and so the British Government has no option but to continue this action, and even other any to continue this action, and even otherany to continue this action, and even other any even after any adverse action in australia. Concorde have crossed the atlantic faster than any plane ever before, breaking the record by six minutes. Glad you are staying with us. This is newsday on the bbc. Im rico hizon in singapore. And im Babita Sharma in london. Paulo breaking story this power our breaking story this hour well the earthquake in mexico is dominating conversations online. At least 130 people have been killed, across three states. The British Government has suspended an Assistance Programme to the burmese military, as a direct result of the treatment of rohingya people. This comes as the countrys de facto leader, aung san suu kyi, has been accused of being in a state of denial after she claimed she didnt know why 400,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled myanmar. Heres some of what she had to say in her address to the nation. We feel deeply for the suffering of all the people who have been caught up all the people who have been caught up in the conflict. Those who have had to flee their homes are many. Notjust had to flee their homes are many. Not just muslims had to flee their homes are many. Notjust muslims and rakhines, but also small minority groups. We are upset to hear it wasnt so freeing across the border to bangladesh. We wa nt to across the border to bangladesh. We want to find out why this exodus is happening. We are upset to hear muslims are fleeing across the border. Salil shetty, secretary general of the Human Rights OrganisationAmnesty International had this to say about aung san suu kyis address to the nation. Well, she came across as somebody who is burying her head in the sand. She is in denial. I mean, it is she does not know why 400,000 people have fled, we can give the astor, because we have our stuff on the ground. We are talking to people who are fleeing from war, from persecution, from the military campaign that is essentially an ethnic cleansing. They want to remove that community from the mark. Ata remove that community from the mark. At a shooting at people as they are fleeing. They are putting landmines. We have ever is notjust of eyewitness accounts of women being raped and children being attacked, but also satellite imagery and, you know, technical evidence which is irrefutable. It is disappointing that she wouldnt first and foremost ignores that there is a serious crisis. So why do you think she is turning a blind eye to the atrocities of the military, and specifically, why are you calling it ethnic cleansing, mr shetty . Because it is that. Were talking about 400,000 people already fleeing. This is not a new problem. The issue of this commission is an old one. The only way that the rohingya problem will be solved is by sofina persecution of them. They are stateless. The military campaign in which she claimed stopped on the 3rd of september is going on. 5th of september. Should issue stop the military campaign of violence, bring aid in. Issues issues open to international scrutiny, why it are the Un Fact Finding Mission delegates not being allowed to enter the country . Britain has already suspended and a programme to myanmar. What else can the International Community to, at this point, apart from condemning violence . Whereat the Un General Assembly right now. The Security Council has not stood up to its responsibility. They have many things they can do, but they have, with some weak elements of a statement, which is shameful. They can doa statement, which is shameful. They can do a lot, and theyre doing nothing. Even the uk action, it is better than nothing, but we have all the World Leaders here. Rakhine state is on fire. It is not a matter of deleting all. People are dying. People are suffering. And theyre taking zero action. It is not a matter of delaying at all. Parts of the caribbean already devastated by Hurricane Irma are in the path of a second powerful storm. At least one person has died as Hurricane Maria hit the island of guadeloupe and there are reports of extensive damage to dominica where there was torrential rain and winds of more than 160 miles per hour. Hurricane maria is now heading towards puerto rico as well as the british Virgin Islands from where our correspondent jeremy cooke reports. She is a mighty force of nature, barrelling in from the atlantic. Hurricane maria hit guadeloupe hard, the french authorities talking of extremely violent winds, ordering people to stay indoors. In martinique, too, high winds and heavy rain, as the hurricane eye passed within 30 miles. Widespread flooding. But perhaps the worst so far has been dominica, conditions so bad, hardly any pictures have emerged. Its rough in dominica, boss. An unverified video posted while the lights went off. The church roof blown in. My neighbours roof gone. Even the Prime Minister could not escape the storm, posting on facebook. Here in the british Virgin Islands, we are getting the first taste of what is to come, with these squalls passing over. These communities know full well the damage that can be caused by a powerful hurricane. That is why they are battening down and preparing for the worst. Right until the last minute today, these shattered communities have been doing their best to prepare. If irma was a knockout punch, what is predicted next feels like a low blow. Im homeless. For francine, it is all too much. Because all the shelters are full, and this is the devastation. You notice i have on different shoes. I cant find any clothes you notice how im dressed. We really need help here, because a lot of people are suffering. The harsh reality here is that all the tons of debris cant be fixed down or made safe before the next hurricane is due to hit. Adding to the problems here, the drains are clogged with debris. More flooding seems inevitable. Theres a lot of loose debris all over. The trees, that act like a barricade to the strong winds, all the leaves are gone. Some of the trees have fallen. And the trees hold the hillsides. So, if we have a lot of rain, were going to have some erosion, and potential mudslides. So thats a big concern. Everyone here is doing all they can to prepare, more than 20,000 british citizens facing their second potentially devastating hurricane in as many weeks. Jeremy cooke, bbc news, on the british Virgin Islands. Lets yet more on our breaking story, comedy quake in mexico. Information is being shared online social media. The earthquake in measure. We know that at least 130 people have been killed across three states. Jennifer swaddle teaches at the British International school in mexico city and was in class when the earthquake struck. She described what happened. This afternoon, i was teaching me a year 7 class, a group of 11 year olds. It was very frightening. Something started. Tremors escalated to the point that the classroom shook. Issues with intact is beaches were fantastic. As we were leaving the classroom, the outside of my classroom all fell. So there was a big pile of rubble. Luckily, fa ntastically, was a big pile of rubble. Luckily, fantastically, nobody was hurt. But it was incredibly frightening, really frightening. What was going through your mind at the time . |j think through your mind at the time . think you feel incredibly vulnerable. You realise that mother nature, you know, if your card is march, there is not much you can do. But really, the first concern is the childrens safety. And they were presently behaved, as said. But it is getting them out of the situation. The ground was moving. We we re situation. The ground was moving. We were on the second floor. We are talking concrete, cement, and it was shaking. So very, very vulnerable, really. And jennifer, what is happening around you now . So we are just kind of recuperating. We are kind of getting ourselves together. I asked i say the community. We are a group of teachers. Just making sure that everyone is ok. Kimi que with home to make sure that they are aware that we are kate. We have not long got issues back to their homes. But that was also something that was a huge problem, the traffic in the coming asia. Communicate with home to make sure that they are aware that we are ok. So reallyjust read to get my head together, really. Thank you so much watching newsday. I rico hizon in singapore. I am Babita Sharma in london. I am rico hizon. Thank you forjoining us. Hello there.
