Who are entitled to compensation. Wayne rooney in court for drink driving. Hes banned from driving and ordered to do Community Service. And around the world in under 80 days the record breaking cyclist completing his epic journey of 18,000 miles. Coming up in sportsday on bbc news, Jonny Bairstow keeps his place and position at the top of the order, as englands cricketers prepare for their final series of the summer. Good evening. Today its been the turn of the Prime Minister to adopt the metaphor of the government as a car heading towards brexit though she claims she is the one in the driving seat. It follows a weekend of headlines about the foreign secretary, borisjohnson, who was accused of backseat driving, after setting out his vision for leaving the european union. Speaking on a visit to canada, the Prime Minister has tried to reassert her authority, insisting the government is being driven from the front. 0ur deputy political editor, john pienaar, reports from ottawa. Well, its good to be shown some proper respect from time to time. If only theresa mays fellow ministers at home were this drilled and disciplined, as it is, the Prime Minister had to cross another ocean to find a political colleague willing to say the right things about brexit on cue. Very good to be here, as i said to you when i came m, here, as i said to you when i came in, this is my first visit to can da. Its great canada. Its great that i can have meetings with you and to come here to the parliament. As it moves forward with brexit, were going to make sure that the relationship between canada and the uk stays as strong as it always has been. Shed come a long way, but not far enough to avoid nagging questions about her foreign secretary, whod upset colleagues, plotting his own path to brexit. Mrs may, its an important week for brexit, starting here, ending in florence. After seeing your foreign secretary accused by senior collea g u es secretary accused by senior colleagues of back seat driving, can you say that you are truly in command of your cabinet and brexit policy . And will you tolerate more back seat driving in future . Policy . And will you tolerate more backseat driving in future . Look, the uk government is driven from the front and we all have the same destination in our sights, that is getting ai good dealfor brexit a good dealfor brexit getting ai good dealfor brexit a good deal for brexit with the european union. Thats a good trade deal, but also a good ongoing relationship in relation to other matters like security. Ive spoken in the past of the deep and special partnership that we want to build with the european union. So he wasnt in charge, theresa may was. Boris johnsons at the wasnt in charge, theresa may was. Borisjohnsons at the un in new york, waiting for theresa may, making no excuses for writing his own brexit script, just mixing with the powerful and wondering why all the powerful and wondering why all the fuss. As for backseat driving, honestly, theres one driver in this car, to use ambers metaphor, which is often used, quite rightly, its theresa. People want to know where were going. I think that its a good thing to have a bit of an opening drum roll about what this country can do. Cabinet splits are widening and now michael gove is among Boris Johnsons friends. Widening and now michael gove is among borisjohnsons friends. Hes been friend, enemy, now friend again. Serving tea to journalists camped at his home and urging people on twitter to give his fellow brexiteer a fair hearing. Still more trouble today as it emerged the top official at the Brexit Department has suddenly left his role. Hes trusted enough to do more than carry theresa mays bag, though. Hell stay on as a negotiator. But its more brexit disruption. In at 0ttowa, the Prime Ministers had other problems, shoulder to shoulder in support of bombardier, Canadian Aerospace company, which employs thousands in northern ireland, now accused of breaking trade rules in the usa. It was also time to talk trade after brexit and again, the canadian leader wanted to be helpful. Within the european union, the uk is the largest trading partner that canada has. So the uk was deeply involved throughout those negotiations towards cita over the past seven years. It will form the basis for the way we move forward in a post brexit europe. Basis for the way we move forward in a postbrexit europe. Places to go, people to see. The latest visit had gone well. But just people to see. The latest visit had gone well. Butjust now, the next upset, the next setback never seems very far away. The Prime Minister would love to be able to show significant progress on the road to brexit this week. Her talks on trade here today were encouraging in tone. Tomorrow, in new york, therell be more talks, with leaders, including donald trump. Shell be talking about modern slavery, about online terrorism and the aim is to show britain will continue to be a major player after brexit. But the sight of her having to slap down her foreign secretary, the speculation that that relationship could flair up that that relationship could flair up into crisis that overshadows everything. Maybe theresa may will show some progress this week, but having to say that shes the one in the driving seat of her own government, that is a mark of weakness, not a sign of strength. Thank you. New cctv footage has emerged appearing to show the Parsons Green tube bomber in the hours before last weeks explosion, which left 30 people injured. Police have been given more time to question two men an 18 year old, suspected to be the bomber, and 21 year old ya hyah farroukh. He was arrested as he finished work on saturday night at a fast food outlet. Heres tom symonds. This is a 24 7 investigation. Late last night, detectives were still removing potential evidence from a fast food shop in hounslow, west london, raided on saturday. They arrested one man here, surrounding him with officers in overalls, a precaution to ensure any forensic evidence on his clothes is not contaminated. Hes 21 year old Yahyah Farroukh. As is normal, police havent confirmed his name. The shops other employees said he didnt stand out. We dont know him very well. Yes, he was employed over here, but he was quite quiet. He just worked over here and that was it. Very normal. If he did do anything, you would never have suspected it. So how is Yahyah Farroukh connected with the inquiry in this part of south west london . The fast food shop where he was arrested is about five miles from his home in stanwell, where theres also been a Detailed Police search. Neighbours said hed been there about six months. In may, he posted a picture online taken here in sunbury on thames, outside the home of penny and ron jones, who may have previously been his foster parents. This house is also being painstakingly searched because last friday morning, many cctv cameras picked up this figure carrying a lidl supermarket bag leaving the street behind the house. Around an hour and a quarter later, the bomb exploded at Parsons Green. It had been in a lidl bag. The house in sunbury on thames is at the centre of the inquiry. An 18 year old also arrested is a recent and troubled foster child of ron and pennyjones. Neighbours say hed tried to run away. Over the last year, there have been Numerous Police cars parked outside the house when ive drove past, but its been more ramped up over the last two or three months with Police Call Outs to the house. Local people are having to get used to this steel cordon across their road. The hope is that it will be removed shortly, but the investigation will continue. Its not unusual for friends and acquaintances of terrorism suspects to be arrested, but then later released. Theres a long way to go. Tom symonds, bbc news, sunbury on thames. The boss of ryanair has apologised for messing up, after the Budget Airline announced its cancelling 40 50 flights every day for the next six weeks, more than 2,000 in total. Michael 0leary blamed mistakes in allocating leave for his pilots and said ryanair could face a compensation bill of £18 million. Heres richard westcott. Rya nairs been distinctly unsatisflying for thousands of customers recently, last minute cancellations leaving their plans up in the air. People complain that theyve been ignored. So whats the boss got to say . This is our mess up. When we make a mess in ryanair, which come out with our hands up, we try to explain why weve made the mess and we will pay compensation to those passengers who are entitled to compensation, which will be those flights that are cancelled over the next two weeks. Passengers have been venting on social media. Neil says hell never book with ryanair again because theyve been left to their own devices. Ciara says the companys e mailed her about car hire and accommodation. She just wants to know if shell make her sisters wedding. Ryanair left me stranded in krakow and gave me no option to get home at a reasonable time, so i took matters into my own hands and spent 500 quid on tickets for myself, my partner and my mother to get back to london on another carrier. Ryanair have cancelled two of our flights home, which means that were stuck in madrid. Weve had to pay hundreds of pounds extra, had to book another hotel and also extra flights to get back. And the communication from ryanair has been absolutely atrocious. We dont even know why its been cancelled. Were just really desperate to get home now. This is the uk base for ryanair, stansted airport. There have been 17 cancellations today as a result of these changes. Therell be 11 tomorrow, 15 the next day and so on and so on for weeks. Ryanair flatly denies that its got a shortage of pilots making the problem worse, but thats not what a number of current ryanair pilots have told the bbc. They talk of a large backlog in training because there arent enough simulators and staff, of colleagues leaving in droves because they dont like the way theyre treated. One said the company was appalling at making staff feel valued. Last year alone, 140 pilots left ryanair for rival norwegian. The company is now under pressure to make it easy for people to get some money back. When people are talking to ryanair, we would expect that theyre fully complying with all their legal duties so that theyre really clear about the compensation youre owed, what expenses youll get and when youll actually get to fly. Ryanair says itll all be over by november, but one current pilot told me he fears a repeat next summer unless the company gets better at keeping its staff. Whats going to happen if youve got a ryanair ticket and youre due to fly out in the next six weeks . You should get an e mail by tonight telling you if that flight has been cancelled. It should be on the website as well. So, at least you know where you stand. Some of those people will be entitled to compensation, as well as a new flight, compensation, as well as a new flight, they might get money as well if theyre flying out in the next couple of weeks. The focus here is going to be on ryanair again. Theyve been good today admitting weve made a mistake and were really sorry. Will they be as good at proactively telling people entitled to money that they can have that money. Well wait and see. A brief look at some of the days other other news stories. A cyclist, who knocked down and killed pedestrian kim briggs while riding an illegal racing bike with no front brakes, has been sent to a Young Offenders institution for 18 months. An old baileyjudge described Charlie Alliston as an accident waiting to happen. The head of Rochdale Council has apologised for failing to prevent the physical and sexual abuse of children at several notorious institutions over a period of 50 years. In a statement, the council acknowledged unforgiveable failings at childrens residential schools such as knowl view. The National Abuse inquiry is hearing evidence about rochdale next month. An nhs trust has apologised for the death of a teenage patient who died in its care. It follows a Lengthy Campaign by his family. Southern health trust pleaded guilty to health and safety breaches after 18 year old connor sparrowhawk drowned in the bath at an oxford Assessment Unit in 2013. The bin strike in birmingham that started back injune is likely to last for several more weeks after members of the unite union voted overwhelmingly in favour of more industrial action. The union has also taken the dispute overjob losses and changes to work patterns to court, seeking an injunction to stop over a hundred redundancies. President trump has used his first speech at the United Nations to call for truly bold reform, saying bureaucracy is stopping the organisation reaching its full potential. Mr trump, who has been dismissive of the un in the past, says he is committed to making it work more effectively. Nick bryant reports from new york. As a new york property tycoon, donald trump looked on the United Nations as a real estate opportunity. He built a tower right opposite and wanted the contract to carry out refurbishment of its headquarters. As president , many thought hed hurl a wrecking ball at the global body, a club, he called it, for people to get together, talk and have a good time. But today donald trump walked through its doors as its most important member and came not to talk demolition, but reform, although he couldnt resist a mention of his previous life. I actually saw Great Potential right across the street, to be honest with you, and it was only for the reason that the United Nations was here that that turned out to be such a successful project. Then it was down to business of a more president ial kind. He said he wanted to make the United Nations great. In recent years, the United Nations has not reached its full potential because of bureaucracy and mismanagement. We encourage the secretary general to fully use his authority to cut through the bureaucracy, reform outdated systems and make Firm Decisions to advance the uns core mission. In the new un secretary general antonio guterres, President Trump has found an improbable ally in pushing through reform. The former socialist Prime Minister of portugal spoke the same language as the billionaire president. 0ur shared objective is a 215t century un focused more on people, less on process, value for money while advancing shared values. That is our common goal. The us is by far the biggest funder of Un Peacekeeping missions such as this one in the democratic republic of congo. The Trump Administration has slashed the budget by half a billion dollars, but the truth is, the un had feared more savage cuts. Many diplomats here were terrified that donald trump would set out to destroy an institution that the United States did so much to create in the aftermath of the second world war. But this America First president has realised that he needs the United Nations on issues such as north korea, and he hasnt posed the kind of existential threat to this body that many feared. Donald trump has already engaged in the kind of diplomatic speed dating thats a feature of this week. But tomorrow hell be alone, centre stage for his first address to the un general assembly, a speech in which Officials Say hell hug the right people and hell slap the right people. It was a pretty restrained and respectful performance from donald trump today. He didnt harai and other members of the United Nations, but i suspect we will hear stronger language tomorrow, directed against iran and north korea, and the possibility as well of some diplomatic theatre. The north korean delegation will be seated right in front of the speakers podium, although it will not include the leader of that country, kim jong un, a man of course that donald trump memorably described over the weekend as rocket man. Nick bryant in new york, thank you. A year ago, we brought you the story of the desperate suffering in yemen according to the un, the worlds worst humanitarian crisis. The conflict there is now in its third year with saudi led forces fighting Houthi Rebels and the situation is no better. Thousands of people have been killed and are threatened with widespread famine. Two million children living in yemen are severely malnourished. The country is also in the grip of the Fastest Growing cholera epidemic on record. 600,000 people have been infected and 2,500 have died. 0ur correspondent Nawal Al Maghafi has returned one year on to one of the worst hit areas of yemen. I should warn you, her report contains distressing images from the start. This is salim. A year ago, these images of him gave a face to yemens suffering. At eight years old, his frail body shocked the world and made the prospect of famine a reality. Doctors feared for the future of the country. At the time, there were over 350,000 children with this same level of malnutrition. That figure now stands at two million. One year later, im travelling back to his village along the coast. This region is the worst affected. The further out from the city you go, the poorer it gets. This is salim now. Emergency aid stopped him from wasting away. His growth is severely stunted. And his brain irreparably damaged by malnutrition. Hell never live a normal life. His family are still desperate for food. I eat bread and tea, his mother tells me, if i can find some. Sometimes the sun sets and all ive had is tea, she says. Outside the house are salims friends and neighbours. Despair and hunger have spread through his village, touching everyone here. Since we got here, people keep coming to us with case after case of severely malnourished children. Its clear that the situation here has gotten a whole lot worse. For generations, the people here have relied upon fishing to survive. But now, going out to sea has become life threatening. The un has recorded multiple attacks on civilian vessels. Ibrahim and ten others took a boat out last week, only to be hit by the saudi coalition. The saudis claim they only target boats that smuggle weapons. But attacks like these have left entire villages struggling for food. Its not just the fishermen that have been affected by this war. These families once had a business here, but a blockade imposed by the Saudi Led Coalition has stopped them from exporting their goods. Now their only child is battling to survive. Not all families have been left without aid. Some donations have arrived. This is abdul. When we met him last year, without lactose free milk, doctors said he wouldnt survive. This is him now. After our report aired, members of the British Public sent aid and supplies. The help has been enough to keep him alive. Yemen is the worlds worst humanitarian crisis. Yet the un say theyve received less than half the money they urgently need to prevent a country wide famine. The conflict, now in its third year, has created this man made disaster. Its people like this that are paying the highest price. Nawal al maghafi, bbc news. And you can watch a longer version of Nawal Al Maghafis film on our world on the bbc news channel at 9. 30 on saturday and sunday night and on the bbc iplayer. The former england and Manchester United captain, wayne rooney, has been banned from driving for two years and ordered to do Community Service after pleading guilty to drink driving. He was arrested near his home in cheshire earlier this month. Our Sports Editor dan roan was in court. Less than 2a hours after playing for his club everton, wayne rooney arriving at stockport magistrates this morning over a drink driving charge. Flanked by police and security guards, the former england captain was escorted through a media scrum and accompanied by his agent. Rooney was arrested in the early hours of september 1st after being stopped by police, driving a car belonging to a woman hed met on a night out and who he was driving home from this bar in wilmslow. The court heard the 31 year old had been three times the legal alcohol limit. Rooney spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth, issuing a guilty plea through his solicitor, who said his client had genuine remorse for a terrible mistake. Districtjudge John Temperly handed rooney a two year driving ban and ordered him to carry out 100 hours of unpaid community work. He was told to pay £170 in costs. Rooney had written a letter to the court expressing his remorse and his solicitor asked that he be spared a Community Sentence because of his charity work. However, the judge said he wasnt convinced a fine would have the same punitive effect following what he called a very serious offence. In a statement, rooney said. Yesterday, rooney made his first return to Manchester United since leaving old trafford to rejoin everton this summer. The court heard his boyhood club was expected to fine the striker two weeks wages around £300,000. Having left court, rooney, his countrys record goal scorer, said he accepted the sentence and hoped his punishment would enable him to make some amends. The german elections are fast approaching, with polls suggesting the right wing nationalist afd party could become a significant parliamentary force. Angela merkel is expected to be returned as chancellor and has ruled out including the afd in any coalition government. But while she rejects the partys populism, mrs merkels own Election Campaign has been laced with patriotic sentiment traditionally a sensitive issue in germany as our europe editor katya adler now reports. With the world outside unpredictable, germans are feeling good at home, feeling good about themselves. A sense at election time that their chancellor is channelling to her advantage, as at this rally in heidelberg. Not everyones convinced, but merkels campaign slogan, vote for a germany where we live well and are happy to live, has struck a chord. Germany is an open, tolerant country, he told me. Our economy is doing well. Even young people have good chances of getting a decentjob. We have values that we can stand up for and we should be proud of what we achieved, and the world should allow us to be proud of being german. Archive raids took place across the channel. Since the horrors of world war ii, germans have felt uncomfortable expressing National Pride unless they were followers of the far right. But look at centrist Angela Merkels campaign posters, unthinkable even a few years ago. Shes clearly incorporating the colours of the german flag. So where does this new, careful confidence come from . Integration, german style. These youngsters, germans and refugees, mainly from syria and afghanistan, are putting on a musical. Its rehearsal time. Letting over a million migrants into germany, the policy widely predicted to bring chancellor merkel down, is now helping to buoy her popularity. Many germans are proud of what they call their welcome culture. I never had any experience with refugees or anything like that. I wanted to see for myself what they were like. At the beginning, we were just friends. But now we are like a big family, yeah. This feel good factor in germany, about germany, chancellor merkel is tapping into, is farfrom the mainstream views as the ugly nationalism of the afd party which isjockeying for third place in these elections. Angela merkel has pulled off an amazing political feat in her years as chancellor. She took everyone by surprise when she threw open germanys doors at the height of the migrant crisis and shes performed quite a few political u turns. Despite that, she embodies, for many here, the values that modern germany wants to be associated with stability, security and humanity. Thats how she keeps getting those votes. Chancellor merkels relationship with the United States close to 0bama, openly wary of trump has also boosted her ratings and german pride. Values are key in this. Germans feel really proud if they can live up to these values, and by 0bama making it clear that he sees merkel as carrying on these values, and merkel making it clear, that in contrast to trump, shes putting the values centre is something germans can feel really good about. How germany feels matters. This is the eus largest country, its biggest economy. After the elections here, a confident germany will likely play a bigger role politically too, in brexit and beyond. Katya adler, bbc news, berlin. Now, we all thought the cyclist chris froome had set a new benchmark for endurance after winning both the Tour De France and spains vuelta but then along comes this man, Mark Beaumont. Injust 78 days, hes cycled 18,000 miles around the world a new record. Hes now back in paris where his journey began. Heres lucy willamson. Every road has its challenges. Only one has the reward. Since he last saw paris, Mark Beaumont has cycled 18,000 miles in less than 80 days. In that time, his youngest daughter has begun to walk and talk. His four year old had reserved the first hug. Its going to take a couple of weeks for me to decompress and come back to normality. Ive not walked for two and a half months. I remember at the airport last week flying across north america, i walked up a flight of stairs and it really hurt. So ill have to get off the bike and get back to normal life. From paris, mark headed east through russia, mongolia and china, crossing australia and new zealand before flying to alaska, where he cycled down through north america
