Now the city of tampa is in its path. Miami is experiencing intense winds and flooding. Our 0ur correspondence our correspondence is there. In the hours before it finally hit the florida keys, Hurricane Irma became more powerful. Right here is the road in front of a house. For this surge, i am going to go with seven feet. Ryan is one of those who defied the orders to leave his home, and was live on social media as the eye of the hurricane approached. The massive sea surges were matched by extraordinary footage of the tide being sucked away from shore, Building Energy to surge again. This isa Building Energy to surge again. This is a life threatening situation. Remember, in south west florida, a storm surge comes after the strongest winds. Do not think the storm is over when the wind slows down. Local officials will let you know when it is safe to go out. The storm surge will rush in and could kill you. You hear a lot of mixed reports right now. Alex perez escaped the keys to shelter in a horror proof hurricane proof building in miami. He is anxious, keeping in touch of those left behind. There are a bunch of people who have lower level housing, some of the flooding is up to peoples waste, up to their roofs. Up the peoples roofs . Yes, it is very severe. Miami is feeling the impact of irma too. The tourists have all now fled. With every passing hour, the florida mainland is further affected. More than a million homes and businesses are already without power. There is barely a soul anywhere in southern florida on the streets, and that is because of the risk of flying debris, the risk of power lines or trees coming down, and the Emergency Services said that even to them in the coming hours it is going to be near impossible to operate. The bbc was allowed to accompany the us air force, as operate. The bbc was allowed to accompany the us airforce, as it flew into the night of irma to track its power and direction. Shes a little bit more violent than the rest of them have been. Some storms, like katrina for example, that was very, very big, but they said it was well organised and it was very smooth to fly storm. Some of the smaller ones are violent, this one is big and appears to be quite violent as well come so we expect to get bounced around quite a bit. Up the florida coast, more are preparing, warned that irma could make a direct hit on the most Populated Areas in its destructive path so far. Earlier i spoke to our correspondent, jane obrien, who is in miami. The sound is deafening. Added to that a fire alarm has started to go off. It isa it is a faulty fire alarm, so we will ignore it. It is 90 mph winds on the ground. Up on the fourth floor balcony which is apparently more sheltered, they are probably in excess of 100. This is a storm that even though we have skirted the eye of the storm it is still battling miami. It is still battering miami. I want to give you an idea of the power of the wind and the rain, because right behind me is a lake that about an hour and a half ago you could still see the ground under the area it is flooded. The area where it is flooded. Now you cant. It has come right over the bank and is encroaching into the car park and the water is continuing to rise. That is what we are also seeing. That is what we are also seeing in downtown miami. The roads close to the coast are flooding rapidly and the water there is still rising. If you can hear me, how many people in the city have decided to stay put . Its very hard to know the exact numbers, at this point. We know that many thousands have decided to leave. Something like 100,000 people are now taking refuge in shelters and we have seen the largest evacuation in floridas history. People are just migrating north trying to get out of the path of the storm as it came up from the florida keys and hit the southern peninsula and is now veering up the west coast. It has been an extraordinary migration of people but at this point the governor is saying stay put. Dont come back to miami until the storm is over and if youre caught stay put and seek shelter, try and stay safe. Jane obrien in miami. Bbc weather presenter Tomasz Shafernaker is in the tampa bay area in florida, which is expected to feel the full force in the next few hours. What are the conditions like at the moment . How difficult is it to get about . Tampa at the moment is not looking too bad, the storm is around eight hours away. We are in somewhat ofa eight hours away. We are in somewhat of a lull at the moment and i have been tracking the eye of the storm, which is currently impacting naples. It does look like we are currently asi it does look like we are currently as i speak having a landfall on the coast of florida, just around naples. That is where the worst of the weather is. The slight lull we have will be the final one before the winds start reaching storm force here, and that will last all the way through the rest of the day here and the night, and currently the projection from the National Hurricane centre is that the eye of the storm will raise the coast past fort myers in the sarasota and into the tampa bay area. At the moment, in answer to your question, it is not too bad. However the place is deserted, people have heeded their warnings. We arejust deserted, people have heeded their warnings. We are just seeing the odd car here and some of them are police. At its worst, what other conditions going to be like that . Police. At its worst, what other conditions going to be like thanm the time we get to around midnight local time here, which is still around eight hours away or so, we should be getting winds up to hurricane force. So gusts of in excess of 100 mph are certainly on the cards. On top of that, as the storm pulls away, and this is far too computed to explain now in a short report, but as the storms i pulls away, we will get a rush of wind off the gulf of mexico that will be pushing the storm surge into the tampa bay area, and some of these regions here are expected to be at least potentially some of the potential is for some inundation, flooding up to around nine feet, according to the Hurricane Centre. In terms of the path hurricane is taking, has it changed and sort of moved around, compared with those earlier predictions . Yes, it has. The forecast from the Weather Authority has been relatively consistent over the last few days. Irma went past, orjust around the north coast of, cuba, but there was a lwa ys north coast of, cuba, but there was always the forecast that it would turn and slam into the state of florida, and that has certainly happened. The storm turned, as predicted, but there was a gradual shift in the path from perhaps it hitting the miami area, then maybe the everglades. It now shifted a little bit and naples is in the path, as well as that coastline in the florida into tampa. It is a very difficult thing to forecast, because just a slight wobble of a storm, and it is moving very slowly, just over ten mph, but it can affect its tragic really significantly. On the line now is sasha duffy, who lives in cape coral, florida. Sasha, thank you for talking to us, tell us what response you have made to this oncoming threat. Yes, cape coral is a town with lots of canals, and we are expecting a lot of flooding there. My home is in a mandatory evacuation area, so we have moved slightly inland and slightly north to my in laws house. They are in an area not in a flood is owned but were still going to be hit by the hurricane, but we wont experience any flooding, hopefully. How is this comparing with other hurricanes you have been through . Ive been here 15 yea rs, have been through . Ive been here 15 years, so ive been through quite a few. This is about my fifth hurricane that has threatened the area, and it is much, much worse. The last big one that i remember was in 2004, which was hurricane charlie. That was scary but it was very, very small and fast moving. This is just very, very small and fast moving. This isjust on very, very small and fast moving. This is just on a totally different scale. Everyone is just this is just on a totally different scale. Everyone isjust terrified. How well equipped is your house to cope with this well you are not there . Well, all homes in florida, it isa there . Well, all homes in florida, it is a new home, all new homes in florida have to be built to a hurricane code, so i am hoping that is high enough. We have hurricane shutters up in the windows, we have unplugged everything in case there is an electrical surge but really our biggest concern will be the flooding. There is nothing we can do about that. There were no sandbags available in the town leading up to the hurricane, so we were not able to put sandbags at any of the entrances. So we are just hoping it will only be a few inches of flooding but it could be much worse. You have taken three docks with you but the cat has had to stay put . Yes, iam but the cat has had to stay put . Yes, i am an animal lover, so i have three dogs and four cats. We took the dogs with us but the cats had to remain. A two story home, which is unusual in this area, the cats are u psta i rs unusual in this area, the cats are upstairs and hopefully they will be fine. It is kind of a worry leaving them behind, but couldnt move the cats. How long are you likely to be away from home . We dont know. We are hoping the floodwaters will start to subside tomorrow afternoon. We have been here since yesterday morning. Hopefully we will at least be able to check out the house tomorrow evening. But we willjust go tomorrow evening. But we willjust 9 by tomorrow evening. But we willjust go by what the local officials say. Cape coral two weeks ago had very bad flooding, just because of the bands of hurricane harvey. We know the roads will be flooded so we just have to wait and see if we can get through. It could be quite a few days before we can return home. Through. It could be quite a few days before we can return homelj hope you escape the worst of it, having left home as you have. Thank you very much. Sasha duffy speaking to us from florida. Now trevor stevenson, who lives in tampa. He has decided to stay put and ride out the storm with his family. We can speak to him now with the webcam. Trevor, thank you very much for joining us. What preparations have you been making today . We have got all the water we need, plenty of ice. I have got like a Solar Panel Charging kit so we can keep our solar devices and stuff up and running, the power is going to go out so it the case of waiting to see with that. I basically left my house to come to my mother in laws. They have a brand new 2 storey house, so that house is up to code. Mine is a very old house that we went on the other side of town. The storm surge alone whispers to be between five and ten feet, so i have had to elevate everything inside the house and make all the preparations i can do there and just come over here and see what happens when the storm hits. Would it not have been safer to have got further away . That was the problem people were having. Over in the analysis county, a lot of people got stuck on a 75. There was a massive gas shortage, people in their cars trying to get out, of their cars trying to get out, of their five hours in their cars trying to get out, of theirfive hours in traffic their cars trying to get out, of their five hours in traffic to realise they have only moved 90 miles so the only way they could get out was to go back home, because getting stuck on the eye 75 where this hurricane is in full force was just ridiculous. How difficult was it to get everything that you needed, all of the food and all the other provisions, because i imagine there has been a bit of a rush on in there has been a bit of a rush on in the shops. You go to any supermarket, there is no canned goods, there is no water anywhere. They have been using baby wets so people can keep themselves semi clean. There is no gas anywhere. There has been a gas shortage from a couple of days ago. So everyone has just been panic buying left, right and centre. It has been terrible. Luckily for me, i brought a lot of water anyway, because i cook with it, everything is bottled for me and my family. Because i cook with it, everything is bottled for me and my familylj am pretty much stopped. I work in tampa, we have gigantic ice machines, i work in a movie theatre, soi machines, i work in a movie theatre, so i could put everything ready. So at least we have extra gallons to drink if it does get depleted. With the impact of the storm we just dont know how it will be. Trevor, lets hope it does not live up to expectations. Thank you very much for talking to us. You are welcome, thanks. Joining us now is love tennant will summons from the Us Air Force Reserves Hurricane Hunters in mississippi. Lieutenant simons, thank you joining us on bbc news. Tell us about what you do, i suppose the clue is in the name . Hurricane hunter. We are tasked with the responsibility of flying into tropical storms. All the way after the specific as well the pacific. We are focused on the atlantic with Hurricane Irma. What is the purpose of doing something which sounds so incredibly dangerous . As reserve citizen m and we collected data. We are not responsible for the forecast but we go out and collect the data, the forecast, the wind speed, the pressure and we send that back to the National Hurricane centre in florida actually. They are the ones that have the best computer models. It hopes to narrow down that forecast. How close or fire into a storm system do you get . Initially we start out 100 miles from the eye of the storm. It gets down to about 10,000 feet. What of the data that the Hurricane Centre want is towards the Hurricane Centre want is towards the surface. 10,000 feet is a good buffer for safety. About 100 miles out, they start flying through the storm. We fly right through the storm. We fly right through the storm to get all the good data, and the eye of irma was initially about three miles wide, and has started to come down since then. What do those conditions due to the aircraft . The sea 130, that the military has been using is the decades, it is a workhorse. It can deal with a lot of wind and rain. With irma, we have 185 mph. Very powerful. The plane actually handles the wind fine. The updraught and the downdraught where it starts to lose out how to choose a day now the trip quickly that becomes more of a concern. So youre being thrown around quite violently, anyone who has been thrown around on it passenger airliner, that is bad enough, so how does this compare . 100 miles out also, that is where we can get some of the data. Those moments dont last too long. As noted here about the eye of the storm, it is relatively calm. At the exact storm, it is relatively calm. At the exa ct ce ntre storm, it is relatively calm. At the exact centre it is very light wind speeds actually foster it sounds terrifying, is it . It can be scary. It isa terrifying, is it . It can be scary. It is a turbulent ride. It is certain that the forecasters are grateful for your efforts. Thank you very much for talking to us. These are the pictures from cuba. Coastal communities and tourist resorts in northern cuba have suffered widespread damage. Emergency officials in havana rescued dozens of residents in neighbourhoods flooded by huge waves. The state run newspaper described the storm surges as the highest ever seen in the city. A short while ago, we heard from cuba correspondent will grant who brought us the latest from the storm cleared up in havana. The streets resemble canals at the moment after Hurricane Irma brought this storm surge over the sea wall, that you can see at the end of the street. That is havanas famous seafront boulevard, and it brought all of the water right to this point, 3 or 4 blocks away from the sea wall. People have been emerging to check on their neighbours and begin the clean up operation. Emergency services are already here, the red cross and military police, so quite a big state presence already. We saw them take away a body but we dont know the details of what happened. By and large, there has not been the loss of life seen elsewhere in the caribbean, that much we do seem to know. But this has been very painful for cuba in terms of property damage, damage to property and livelihoods. It seems irma may have knocked cubas economyjust as hard as she hit its coastline. Just hearing from the National Weather service in the United States that they are issuing a Tornado Warning for the miami area until half past three, local time. That is in addition to the hurricane they are having to deal with, there are local Tornado Warnings too, which of course in themselves could cause a great deal of damage, so we will keep an eye on what else is happening in miami. Dont forget that there is plenty more on Hurricane Irma on the website. Officials in mexico say at least 90 people are now known to have died in thursdays earthquake, the strongest country has seen in century. More than 70 people have been killed in the southwest eighth. Hundreds of families have reportedly been camping in the streets, afraid of the dangers of after shocks. Clearing the rubble injuchitan in southern mexico, the town worst hit by thursdays earthquake. Aaron safir, bbc news. A bbc investigation has discovered that the bodies of more than 400 children could be buried in a mass grave close to an orphanage in lanarkshire.
