The stars of strictly pay an emotional tribute to the shows former host sir Bruce Forsyth, who died in august at the age of 89. Good morning and welcome to bbc news. After battering its way through the caribbean, Hurricane Irma, currently a category four storm, is within hours of hitting the us coast. The storm made landfall in cuba late on friday, causing widespread damage and leaving whole communities homeless. The hurricane is now inching towards the Southern Coast of florida, where a huge storm surge is expected. Water levels are already flooding roads in the florida keys and more than 200,000 people have lost power. 0ver six Million People, almost a third of the states population, had been urged to evacuate, but the state governor told residents yesterday, its now too late for anyone remaining to leave. Cities like naples and tampa are in the part of the hurricane. Tampa has not seen anything like this for 1921 and is ill prepared for such a storm. At fort myers, thousands of people crowded into a sports stadium ina people crowded into a sports stadium in a last minute dash to find somewhere safe. I think were going to be staying here for two nights, maybe three. They really dont know where the storm is going to go exactly, so we have no way of knowing. We are all waiting for it to start and end. Irma could shift course again. Hurricanes are notorious for sudden wobbles. But the giant system is already too close to make much difference. This is a deadly, major storm and our state has never seen anything like it. Millions of floridians will see major hurricane impacts with deadly, deadly, deadly storm surge. Meanwhile, the low lying keys were being menaced by a life threatening storm surge of up to 15 feet as it moved relentlessly towards the mainland. Tornado watchers were also in place. In miami there was a collective sigh of relief. The city looks likely to escape the deadly cone. But Hurricane Force winds are still expected through sunday. An estimated 75,000 people are now thought to be taking refuge in shelters. 0ver six million have been asked to leave their homes in the biggest evacuation in the history of florida. The entire state is expected to suffer. The only question now is how much. Jane 0brien, bbc news, miami. President trump has echoed the calls for residents to seek shelter. This is a storm of enormous destructive power, and we ask everyone in the storms path to heed all instructions, get out of its way. Government officials, i know youre working so hard, youll never work like this, and i appreciate also your bravery. Property is replaceable but lives are not. Safety has to come first. Dont worry about it, just get out of its way. Louise lears here to tell us more about what to expect from irma. Yes, plenty to talk about at the moment. Ijust yes, plenty to talk about at the moment. I just want to look yes, plenty to talk about at the moment. Ijust want to look back yes, plenty to talk about at the moment. I just want to look back at the satellite picture, what has happened in the last 12 hours. First of all, this wasjose, which is now sitting across the western atlantic. Hurricane irma, it really ravaged the north cuban coast for over 2a hours, which weakened the hurricane down to a category three for a while, but as it has moved across the warmer waters, it has strengthened back to a category four. It really is devastating, a huge harry kane. It is starting to haveit huge harry kane. It is starting to have it impact across the florida keys, but expected to make landfall in the next couple of hours before continuing to track north and west. There is still some uncertaintyjust where the eye will cross and make landfall, it looks likely to run parallel to the west coast of florida. Extensive heavy rain, damaging gusts of wind, and this huge storm surge. 0nce damaging gusts of wind, and this huge storm surge. Once the hurricane moves through, the wind will drive through that water along the low lying coastal areas. At that continues to push its weight steadily north over the next couple of days it will weaken considerably, still a lot of heavy rain associated with it, but ijust want to take a look atjose, still out in the western atlantic. At the moment, we are expecting it to weaken over the next couple of days, and it looks likely to sit here for five days or so, so we cant rule it out. There is the potential that it could intensify again and start to track ina intensify again and start to track in a westerly direction. We dont wa nt to in a westerly direction. We dont want to think about that too much at the moment, but it is worth bearing in mind. You talked about the uncertainty, how hard is it to project the trajectory of these hurricanes . I think for Hurricane Irma the projection has been spot on, which is why the evacuation has been so successful. They kept to the north of the caribbean, so really the trajectory has been spot on. Joseis the trajectory has been spot on. Jose is going to be difficult because it is that question of the boundary where its taste of the warmer waters of the caribbean, or it moves into the colder waters. The warmer waters helped to give it edgy, but there are a lot of other factors in there, the strength of the wind, a lot of ingredients to come together to keep that rotational poll in order for these harry kane is to grow and maintain their strength. Thank you. The government says Hurricane Irma cut off power to large areas of huber and more than a million work evacuated. Whole communities have been left homeless. 0ur correspondence is in havana and he has been assessing how the country has been assessing how the country has code. Coped. Well, it has been an extraordinary experience being in cuba during Hurricane Irma and now it is reaching, it has reached havana. This is the bbc Havana Bureau and im speaking from inside because we simply cant go outside any longer. Were boarding in the building. Miraculously we still have electricity but much of the rest of the building does not have that. As you can see behind me, the window is flexing with the winds that are buffeting the city and it is raining very, very hard out there. That, of course, is nothing in comparison to what cubans further east on the island have already experienced. These are just the last vestiges, really, of Hurricane Irma as she moves out of cuban territory and into clear water between cuba and the United States before making landfall in florida. But we are still feeling the effects of the sheer magnitude of this storm. 0ut east along the northern coastal zone, whole villages were hit very hard by the storm. We understand that some were largely submerged under water. Others have had roofs ripped off scores of houses, and a lot of the roughly one Million People who were evacuated from the area may have no homes to go to. For now, from here in bbc Havana Bureau, it feels really like the time to hunker down, batten down the hatches and wait out the remnants of this massive storm. Ijust want i just want to show you some live pictures from miami in florida. This is actually from a reuters camera crew, who are driving around in miami. Early morning there in miami at the moment, and you can see the trees being buffeted by the very strong winds, heavy rainfall as well, but as we heard earlier, miami seems to have escaped the full force of the hurricane. The projection is that it wont be as badly hit as had been feared. Thats just tell you exactly what we are hearing about the hurricane. It has strengthened toa the hurricane. It has strengthened to a category four storm as it is closing in currently on the florida keys for stock that is according to the Us National Hurricane centre, so the Us National Hurricane centre, so the storm at the moment is around 70 miles south east of key west, and it wins around 130 mph. The eye of Hurricane Irma expected to cross the lower florida keys in the next few hours, before then moving along the west coast of florida. It is threatening that coast with storm surges of up to 15 feet, which would be pretty much enough to cover a house. That is the concern, and that is why some 6 Million People have been evacuated from their properties. Lets cross to cbs correspondent meg 0liver in miami. Give us an idea of the picture there, it is obviously very blustery, but it does perhaps look like miami will escape the worst of Hurricane Irma. For sure, that is what the forecast looks like right 110w. What the forecast looks like right now. We are seeing these strong gusts of wind, but we are just on the outer bounds of Hurricane Irma. The real threat is barrelling towards the florida keys, and it is expected that the eye of the storm will hit the lower keys in the next hour. Itll be down there for hours before eventually moving north towards the florida peninsula and up the west coast. This a massive storm that will span the entire florida peninsula, so here in miami will see an increased threat of tornadoes, Hurricane Force winds, and storm surge and that is a big threat. The storm surge could be up to six feet and authorities are warning that if that starts to flood into a building, make sure you get to a second floor. This is not something to fall around with. Just tell us about the extraordinary exodus of people from their homes and properties in florida. Millions of people have been on the move, havent they . Thats right, more than half a Million People have been on the move and they have evacuated. Here in south florida, especially in miami, we have been preparing for days. Authorities have been telling people to get on the road and get out of harms way. Unfortunately, that has not been the case on the east is. This hurricane has shifted dramatically in the last 24 hour is, so dramatically in the last 24 hour is, so now dramatically in the last 24 hour is, so now people along the west coast, naples, and for all the way up, they have had to prepare in the last 2a hours to hit the road, or hunker down, board up their homes and so it has been a mass evacuation, one for the history books for sure. Just tell us a bit about that. Florida is no stranger to hurricanes but this is the worst for many years, isnt it . Thats right. When you are talking about Hurricane Irma, especially folks in the florida keys, they typically dont evacuate. I spoke to a gentleman yesterday, who decided to evacuate at the last minute, but he told me they typically have hurricane parties and they ride out the storm. This was so bad that county administrators forced practically everybody to leave, even the fire department, the police officers, search and rescue. There are people that are left in the florida keys, hunkered down in shelters or different high schools that are built strong and have a lot of concrete walls, but typically they lived through these, and they try to stay in their homes. This one was just too try to stay in their homes. This one wasjust too big, a category five barrelling towards florida. Forecasters are guaranteeing that this is something nobody in florida will have experienced before. Thank you so much for being with us. It is very blustery there, good luck and stay safe. Thank you. Chip kasper is a senior forecaster with the National Weather service in key west, which is currently being battered by irma. Thank you so much forjoining us, we spoke a little while ago. What is the latest status of the hurricane . Well, we have a very large and dangerous hurricane approaching the florida keys at this hour. We have hurricane imac as a category four Hurricane Irma, which means it has maximum sustained winds of 130 mph, and it is a very large system. The eye of the hurricane is approaching the lower florida keys. They are a low lying string of islands extending south west with from the tip of the florida peninsula, so the key minute hes a very vulnerable. We still have some people left after a mandatory evacuation, and we are encouraging those people to hunker down and stay indoors because the worst of the hurricane is about to be upon them. And what will be the most serious effects upon them of the hurricane . Is it the wind, or the hurricane . Is it the wind, or the storm surge and flooding . The hurricane . Is it the wind, or the storm surge and flooding . M the hurricane . Is it the wind, or the storm surge and flooding . It is both. We have Hurricane Force wind gusts throughout the florida keys right now, and those winds are going to increase as the eye moves north, about six miles per hour. We are talking about wind gusts over 100 mph, perhaps up to 130 mph. These kinds of winds can do tremendous damage, especially to wooden framed homes, roofs, trees, power lines, things like that. The other very deadly risk is storm surge flooding. Most people who die in hurricanes do so most people who die in hurricanes do so from drowning in the storm surge, and we are expecting in the worst Case Scenario and we are expecting in the worst Case Scenario up and we are expecting in the worst Case Scenario up to ten feet of water, inundation, flooding above ground level. The florida keys are very low lying, so this is a pretty dire situation right now. We hope people can hang in there if they are left in these communities, just hunker down and try to survive over the next 4 6 hours. Hunker down and try to survive over the next 46 hours. So, what about the next 46 hours. So, what about the rest of florida . What is your latest projection on where Hurricane Irma is going to head as it moves along the florida coast . Yes, the latest forecast from the National Hurricane centre in miami takes Hurricane Irma and moves the storm northward, so much of the florida peninsula is going to experience either hurricane or Tropical Storm conditions, but especially along the west coast there will be the dual threat of wind and storm surge. The hurricane warnings extend up along the west coast of florida. So it will move along florida, and what then,is will move along florida, and what then, is it likely to hit carolina, georgia, what is the projection after that, or is it then expected to lose some strength . The forecast is for some weakening as it moves northwards, but the path actually goes north and then north, north west towards parts of the deep south. Thank you so much for being with us. Seniorforecaster south. Thank you so much for being with us. Senior forecaster with the National Weather service in key west. Thank you very much indeed for being with us. We have just flown over the Virgin Islands and i can tell you that some of the devastation is very difficult to witness. Houses look like they have been blown apart. 0nce prized possessions now scattered and in ruins. You can see the effects of that 20 foot storm surge. Boats lie littered around the islands. Where they have been moored together, they have crashed and been sent flying into pieces. There has been criticism here of the british governments response to this crisis. I can tell you that the Royal Army Engineers are here. They are assessing this runway as a priority and that is because they need to get aid in and people out. There has also been concern about looting but i am told by the Deputy Governor that they are trying to get things under control. There is still a lot of work to do here. Laura bicker reporting. The uk government is deploying extra troops to help the relief effort in the caribbean. Engineers have now completed work on the airport runway in the british Virgin Islands to allow the first aid flight to land there. A command headquarters will also be set up. The defence secretary, sir michael fallon, has dismissed criticism of the uk governments response to Hurricane Irma. Speaking on the andrew marr programme, mr fallon said it wasnt true that his governments response had been slower than other countries. There has been a security issue there, which is why we are prioritising getting armed troops in to strengthen the local police force. The island has been devastated, it has been difficult for people to move around and to get helicopters there, but there are troops to ensure law and order is maintained. But there have been voices from there and from parliament that has said our response has been too slow, slower than france and holland. That is not true, the french did not have any kind of ship like mounts bay. They had a couple of frigates there. They have the advantage of having troops, they garrison their overseas territory, so that troops were already in addition. We have local Police Forces on these islands, but oui Police Forces on these islands, but our response Police Forces on these islands, but oui response has Police Forces on these islands, but our response has been as good as anybody elses. I can tell you that the french have asked for our assistance in lifting troops and material to some of their islands. We were hearing about how the hurricane is hitting the florida keys. Tell us what to situation is . It was a very short night, needless to say. The eye was about 25 miles of key west, and where i live is five miles of key west so i think it will go over the top of us in the next couple of hours. The whole house was shaking. It is actually kind of scary, but i know we are safe, it was built for this. Our shutters are down, we have fired up the generator to make coffee and we have still got tv. Tv and coffey, fantastic. But did you ever think of leaving . There were a lot of calls for people to be evacuated. Yes, there was a mandatory evacuation, when they first thought it might be heading this way we were in the middle of the cone, and usually things change, so we thought we would sit and wait and see. We have three dogs and two cats which are not easy to travel with and once they ordered the evacuation of the highways were clogged with cars. It was like, where do you go . Especially with the animals, we knew oui especially with the animals, we knew our house was pretty strong and we have three generators. My husband is a fisherman so we have a lot of ice in the machine downstairs. Wejust have to wait and see. We were good until a couple of days ago and now it is coming right at us and we are here, we are stuck. Have you been through hurricanes before, and how do you think this one will compare to other hurricanes that have hit florida in the past . I have been through eight view because i have beenin through eight view because i have been in key west for about 30 years. This is going to be a bad one, but they keep talking about the storm surge and the thing is it is that a small island that once the water comes it goes right back down because there is no land surrounding it. They are saying 5 10 feet of storm surge on so it. They are saying 5 10 feet of storm surge on so it will be bad. We will have to wait and see. Barbie, thank you for being with us and we hope you are safe and that your property is not damaged in any way. Barbie wilson is in key west, just waiting for Hurricane Irma as it comes through the florida keys, which it isjust comes through the florida keys, which it is just about to. It is already hitting the florida keys in fa ct. Already hitting the florida keys in fact. Nt more on Hurricane Irma on our website. Citys 5 0 thrashing of liverpool helped their goal difference but united remain above them despite the fact they could only draw 2 2 against stoke, a result that ended their perfect start to the season. I am not satisfied with the point because i think we were the team that tried to win, the team that were closer to winning, the team that got the result in the last 20 minutes to win the match. But i have got to say that is the result that i accept. One thing trying to win, one thing trying to get the point, but they fought hard for that point.
