Its not clear how much damage it has caused. What is clear is the category four hurricane will track along much of cubas northern coast before shifting north to the united states. Already, thousands of people have moved away from the cuban coast including british tourists. Some of them save their Holiday Company could have got them out of the country before the storm hit. We still have a big window, they could have got some planes and i took us out, even someone have got some planes and i took us out, even someone else in america. It seems that thomas cook have left is here well everyone else has been evacuated. In response, thomas cook says it has moved almost 2000 customers to an area on the mainland as directed by the cuban authorities which is in lockdown and in hotels built to withstand a hurricane. The first time that has happened on cuba since the 19205, which gives you a 5ense since the 19205, which gives you a sense of the scale of this event. Its coming from the National Hurricane centre which is the Us Federal Government Agency which is having a very busy time at the moment with a couple of hurricanes to content with, Hurricane Irma and hurricanejose, i5 Hurricane Irma and hurricanejose, is reporting that Hurricane Irma i5 expected to strengthen when is reporting that Hurricane Irma is expected to strengthen when it moves away from cuba later today. It has dropped to a category four hurricane because it is gusting at 155 miles an hour, the minimum level at category five which is the highest level used as 157 miles an hour so thatis level used as 157 miles an hour so that is every expectation that it will come back up again and they are pretty much saying that once it leaves cuba and dissipates, it will pick up more energy again as it moves pick up more energy again as it m oves a cross pick up more energy again as it moves across the sea towards florida where it is expected to hit landfall tomorrow. 0ne where it is expected to hit landfall tomorrow. One area that didnt suffer as bad as it feared was the bahamas. It has largely been spared because Hurricane Irma change direction. 0ur correspondent sent this update a short while ago. A profound sense of relief in the bahamas especially in the northern part of this archipelago. Some outlying islands in the south experienced structural damage and flooding but nothing on the skill of what was initially feared. Were getting a sense of the level of destruction elsewhere in the caribbean. Barbuda was the first island where Hurricane Irma made landfall and 95 of the building there have been destroyed. The island has been evacuated because of the danger posed by hurricanejose. The us virgin islands, four deaths have been confirmed. The British Virgin islands, a great deal of destruction. Donald trump reached out to president Emmanuel Macron yesterday, offering american condolences and american practical support. Sean is in florida. Thanks for being with us on bbc news. Were you trying to leave you have not been told to evacuate . Its not a mandatory evacuation here, its at our own discretion. We have decided we wouldnt leave, we have been through three storms previously, but we are familiar with it. You are being pragmatic in your approach, trying to make the best preparations you can . Gamma, you get to get all the stuff i could fly around outside like tables, chairs and plant pots and just hunker down as they say. Have you been made nervous by some of the predictions that have been made . The governor described this as a catastrophic storm, the like of which are state has never seen. Hes right and which are state has never seen. Hes rightand im which are state has never seen. Hes right and im a little nervous of course, its very dangerous, all sorts of things that happen. We rate in the middle of the state so the likelihood of flooding is much less. It is heading for tampa weather has not been a storm for a number of yea rs, not been a storm for a number of years, a number of new building stone by the water could have problems. What about your neighbours . Some have gone, some have stayed. What sort of preparations are they making, what can you practically do to protect yourself . Some homes have storm shutters. The place that i live is relatively new and built to Higher Standards in the early part of this century so were pretty confident were going to be ok, itsjust a case of bringing things that could fly around when the big wins start to hit. Winds. The house is built to hit. Winds. The house is built to withstand higher wind speeds so theyre very well built. Some of the other areas like trailer parks, goodness me, you dont want to be there. The Power Companies have been warning that it thinks the outages that could follow from the storm is to overhead cables and could last for days if not weeks for part of the state. Have you got food and things like that ready for that eventuality . Have you got your generator . I dont have my own power generator. Some people do and thats probably the Biggest Issue if we lose power. Food in freezers will rot, youve got to get rid of that, only for so long can you keep it. That would be a problem if we did lose power. Thats probably the biggest problem that we face. Its hot here so we need air conditioning that made at last, of course. The other question that people will be interested is insurance, is it possible to get insurance, is it possible to get insurance to protect you from events like this . Its interesting, what we will see after this is insurers rates rising lake after last time. Down by the coast, they have to pay increase premiums. When Something Like this happens, the finish paying increased premiums. We can get insurance with relatively low deductible so were 0k. What do you make of the preparedness in florida. Absolutely fantastic. We experienced good preparedness in 2004 and its the same again, they know what theyre doing. Shone, thank you very much for speaking to we wish you all the best and perhaps we wish you all the best and perhaps we will speak to you again once things have cleared. A correspondentjoined me to tell us about the trajectory of hurricane erma and hurricane jose. Hurricane irma is huge. They flew a plane over it before it was downgraded and they found that the eye of the storm was 35 miles wide and hurricane strength winds extended to 75 males which is why we have seen all the destruction that we have across cuba and you will see it as the daylight images but hurricane jose will see it as the daylight images but hurricanejose is will see it as the daylight images but hurricane jose is following will see it as the daylight images but hurricanejose is following a similar track at the moment and u nfortu nately similar track at the moment and unfortunately hurricane jose, similar track at the moment and unfortunately hurricanejose, a category four hurricane, is getting very close to barbuda which got flattened by Hurricane Irma. It is more of a glancing blow, so it is tracking more to the north and northeast of barbuda so it is close enough that theres going to be some damage. There is still the idea that there could be some torrential rain and storm surges but i think the worst is probably going to be out at sea. Thats not what were seeing with Hurricane Irma. We need to focus on this one. As well as flying over the hurricane, they measured the sea surface temperature and measured the sea surface temperature that Hurricane Irma is moving over at 31 celsius. What effect does that have . The warmest sea it has moved in its history so what that does, although there has been some interaction with the coast of cuba so interaction with the coast of cuba so it has battered that and bumped into it and has weakened it slightly but were only talking about five miles an hour. That moved it from category five to a category four. And it could go up again . Absolutely. Because it is moving over warm water, that feeds it, gives of the energy, maintains the energy and so it could extra strength and again by five miles an hour into a category five over the next 12 to 24 hours or so. The difficulty is the turn to the north and that is the crucial bit. So far it has followed a fairly steady path over warm waters, maintained its intensity for so long, it has been strongerfar intensity for so long, it has been stronger far longer intensity for so long, it has been strongerfar longer than intensity for so long, it has been stronger far longer than any other, but were expecting it to turn to the north and that means florida is in the firing line. The turn is happening a little bit later so the track has changed positions lately. You can see the centre of moving up to the keys by sunday morning and then inland over mainland florida a bit later on in the day. When it hits land, is it because it hits land and hits buildings and trees, that that can actually contribute to a shift in the direction . Is that pa rt a shift in the direction . Is that part of what makes it hard to predict . The shifting prediction is down to the upper air, either side of Hurricane Irma you have an upper airof high of Hurricane Irma you have an upper air of High Pressure which is stronger than forecast but you have a jet stream diving down into the gulf of mexico, and that is going to force the change. What happens when it moves overland, you have all this energy fed into it from the warm water and it moves overland, so the wind tends to drop, the hurricane wea ke ns. Wind tends to drop, the hurricane weakens. Thats a steady process. On landfall, its still going to be a category for a category five and as we saw there, the winds and get swept northwards. It looks like it tracks across the western side of florida so that slight change is going to be nearer the gulf coast and the atlantic coast, thats the centre of course and remember we got category four, category five weaklings at moves overland, storm surge and torrential rain. It doesnt just stop surge and torrential rain. It doesntjust stop in georgia, and carries on. By the tenure in on monday, it has decayed to a Tropical Storm and it is notjust georgia, youve got into carolina, too. Hurricane irma has got a lot of history and its probably going to make history as well. Weve never recorded to category four hurricane is making landfall in the usa ever and we expect that is about to change because Hurricane Irma is going to be hitting as a category four, possibly category five. This is in exaggerated. Google talk and grand language but when the governor of florida says, you have got to get out, he isnt exaggerating. Of course not. The track is crucial and we have seen course not. The track is crucial and we have seen some course not. The track is crucial and we have seen some deviation and could still change. These things like to take the path of least resista nce like to take the path of least resistance and it could be that it wanders along the coast and doesnt actually make landfall until much further north. That could be the worst Case Scenario further north. That could be the worst Case Scenario in many ways because it will stay stronger far longer, but the track is to take it overla nd longer, but the track is to take it overland as it does so, it does weaken, but this is major. We dont wa nt to weaken, but this is major. We dont want to get hung up on whether it is a category for a category five fifths miles an hour. You would feel the difference. Youve still got a lot of destruction. You wont feel the difference. And there is plenty more on Hurricane Irma on our website, bbc. Co. Uk news. The nhs in england has issued new guidance to terror attack victims after some were subjected to vile and upsetting abuse online. It warns about the pitfalls of using social media and also says people need to be wary of journalists. But it adds that social media can also play a positive role in helping victims and families after attacks. In the early 19805 Greenham Common in berkshire hit the headlines because of protests over the decision to house American NuclearCruise Missiles there. 20 years on from the common being handed back to the public. The bomb proof bunkers are still there. Theyre empty, but theyre still protected because they are considered of national importance. Joe campbell reports. When you hear the air attack warning you and your family must take cover. Crews arrived at greenham in one of the tensest periods of the cold war. While moscow and Washington Squared up on the world stage, conflict came to berkshire as Anti Nuclear Campaigners picketed the base while inside the military trained for armageddon. This is the decontamination unit of what was raf Greenham Common. So through the Revolving Doors here and then you come up against this. This. Which as you can see is a very heavy blast proof door. It weighs more than a tonne. In this complex airmen would have cleaned up after exposure to fall out or chemical attack. John was the sites last civilian manager. Now, this looks quite important. This is where the whole suite was controlled from. We can make it do anything. It is supposed to lock all the doors. And all these years after the place closed, everything is still working. You press the button here and you can still talk. Yes. Whats this here . I mean, these are american cigarettes . Yes. These were probably being smoked by the last man who actually stood here and used this for real. Yes. I suppose really when you Wander Around here its a kind of window on the end of the world. Thats a good phrase. Yes, it is a window on the end of the world. I think there is no other way of looking at it. If the guys came back in here and had to stay in here, what is there outside left . Military and peace campaigners would both in the end lay claim to bringing about the end of the cold war in greenhams demise. The day the americans finally left Greenham Common, i was here to watch them go, but it didnt really sink in just what was happening until a few years later when on a trip to the us militarys bone yard in the arizona desert, where they store redundant aircraft, i came across a small area where there were a group of vehicles parked in congress in that desert setting in their green and black and brown camouflage. It was the Greenham CommonCruise Missile launchers awaiting their fate with the rest of the cold war relics. The bunkers though remain. A reminder of what might have happened had the missiles ever rolled out of here in anger. That was joe campbell reporting there. Time for a look at the weather. Good afternoon. I wouldnt use the word is tranquil to describe our weather prospects this weekend but certainly nothing as turbulent as were seeing across the caribbean at the moment. Whats going on here at home, its a story of sunshine and showers on the face of it. Across the southeast with a day has started off dry, the showers are now drifting in, some of them heavier than the day. Showers continuing progress in england and wales. Northern ireland and scotland are seeing fewer showers this afternoon, more in the way of sunshine. Breezy for many, 15 to 19 celsius. This evening, most originalfade for many, 15 to 19 celsius. This evening, most original fade away. Where we have clear skies we will see the odd fog that and will turn quite chilly, perhaps even a touch of grass crossed for some eastern areas, towns and cities holding at 1011 celsius. Settle in eastern area tomorrow, some brightness but cloud. And from the west gray quickly. We see a big survey moving to Northern Ireland into wales and western england. Showers behind, blowing in a strong wind and gales for western coastal areas later in the day and top temperatures of 13 to 18 celsius. Hello, this is bbc news. The headlines at 1. 30pm.
