Brazil’s murky justice system still has the power to surprise. The latest jolt came last month when a lone Supreme Court judge annulled two corruption convictions against ex-president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the fiery leftist known simply as Lula, on technical grounds. In doing so, he set up a contest between opposite sides of the political spectrum in next year’s election. Former president Fernando Collor was moved to marvel at the dramatic twist on Twitter: “In Brazil, even the past is uncertain!”
