The federal Department of Defence has pleaded guilty to a workplace health and safety charge arising from the death of a young Victorian soldier during a live-fire training exercise near Darwin four years ago.
Private Jason Challis was accidentally shot after he separated from his training group during an exercise at the Mount Bundey Training Area in May 2017, and crouched down behind a plywood building directly in line with a concealed target.
