Attorney for nurse accused in death of Lakeside Academy student, 16, files motion to dismiss charges

KALAMAZOO, MI — An attorney for the former director of nursing at Lakeside Academy has filed a motion to dismiss charges against his client in the death of 16-year-old student Cornelius Fredricks.
Heather McLogan, 49, is charged with involuntary manslaughter and second-degree child abuse in Fredricks’ death, which stemmed from an April 29, 2020, incident at the now-closed residential youth treatment facility.
Fredricks died two days later in a Kalamazoo hospital as a result of “sequelae of restraint asphyxia,” meaning the teen was receiving a lack of oxygen and blood flow. After being rendered unconscious during the April 29 incident at the academy, in which he was restrained for 12 minutes after throwing food in the cafeteria, Fredricks never regained consciousness.
