GUWAHATI: Assam’s Covid-19 positivity rate dipped to 1.5% on Friday — the lowest since mid-April — indicating that the infection was probably getting arrested gradually. The highest positivity rate thus far of 10% was recorded on May 2.
Out of 1,53,981 tests conducted on Friday, only 2,453 positive cases were found, while 27 persons succumbed to the virus, taking the total n umber of fatalities in the state to 4,604. Though Assam has witnessed a significant decline in the number of cases in June as compared to May, districts such as Biswanath, Sonitpir and Golaghat continue to record a high number of Covid cases daily, pushing the overall tally upward, despite strong containment measures. Majority of the cases are being reported from these places. About 1,275 new cases were detected between June 28 and July 1 with over 300 cases per day — highest in the state. In the last 10 days, Sonitpur reported 1,988 cases, followed by Kamrup Metropolitan, which covers Guwahati, had 1,641 cases during the aforementioned period.
