It’s important to give them the space to individuate, but to also help them understand there are still boundaries.
Teens need boundaries to feel safe. But if the boundaries are too tight, they will rebel and push back a lot. If the boundaries are too loose, they will feel that they don’t have support.
Too tight or too loose boundaries could result in extreme risky behaviour or, conversely, depressive behaviour. But if a child or teen is struggling, it’s certainly not always the fault of parenting. Our children are in various social situations daily - at sports, school, or in their social world that parents know nothing about.
