The Temuka River bridge was closed on Sunday afternoon.
Elizabeth Prattley had been anticipating a nervous and sleepless night as water from the Temuka River crept closer to her home.
Prattley, who lives opposite the cemetery at Arowhenua, and just down the road from the river, decided to self evacuate on Sunday afternoon, at 3pm, as water from the river got higher, and faster.
"The paddock next to my home was flooded,'' Prattley said.
“It kept coming up and up all day.
