It is now more than a week since Matt Hancock announced in the Commons that a new coronavirus variant had been detected in south-east England – and was responsible for a rapid surge in infections.
Since then experts have been racing to understand this new mutation, known as B.1.1.7 or VUI-202012/01, while some commentators have accused the Government of using the variant as an excuse for tightening restrictions over Christmas.
Scientists have denied this. “I don't think there's been any 'egging up', as far as I can tell,” Professor Peter Horby, chair of the New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group (Nervtag), told MPs on Wednesday. “This is a new variant which is of concern.”
