Major Australian law firm Allens was the victim of a high-profile cyber attack that compromised the service provider it trusted with sensitive information, including commercial-in-confidence documents related to Westpac’s anti-money laundering compliance.
AFR Weekend can reveal that a file-sharing system provided by Californian cloud company Accellion and used by Allens was accessed illegally last week.
Allens is a legal adviser to almost three-quarters of Australia’s top 100 companies.

Allens had not announced the attack to the public when approached for comment.
A spokesman for the Australian Cyber Security Centre also declined to comment. A statement on the ACSC’s website posted earlier this week said the agency was “working with cyber security partners to assist Australian organisations” in relation to the Accellion vulnerability.
