I have the sport, including olympic hurdle champion medals at the World Championship four days before he undergoes a kidney transplant. In austria, police are trying to identify 71 bodies including four children who have suffocated in the back of a truck. In the mediterranean at least 82 have confirmed to have died and up to 100 are still missing. In a moment well hear from claudia la wenger, reporting on that ship that went down off of the lohse of libya. But certain Sonia Gallego has the latest from austria. Reporter carrying away the remains of the dead. Collected from the abandoned refrigerated lori where they died. Men, women, children, the youngest a mere toddler all enduring their last hours in barbaric, undignified circumstances. The corps were decomposing. This is how they ended their hellish journey. All of this just to escape war, desperation for themselves, for their families. Among the remains a syrian travel document was recovered. Time and again there have been cries for solutions to prevent such deaths for those trying to get to western europe. Attempts to prevent them from coming under such desperate circumstances in the first place are not working. I think the solution is not to make more border checks. I think the best solution is to find legal ways to europe because on the one side you cant protect the refugees, on the other side its the best [ inaudible ]. Reporter Austrian Police say that a bulgarian hungarian trafficking ring was most likely responsible. Translator based on the findings of the investigation work, together with the hungarian authorities, the Public Prosecutor issued european arrest war rents for four people overnight. Reporter in spite of the danger, thousands keep coming every day. They embark on dangerous journeys desperately searching for a better life. Already the number of refugees and migrants crossing the mediterranean to reach european soil have passed 300,000. And they will keep coming while war and strife continue unabated. Sonia gallego, al jazeera. Reporter the Mediterranean Sea has become a dark reminder of peoples desperation to escape violence, persecution and poverty. Thousands have died so far this year, in the latest tragedy, an overcrowded boat sank shortly after leaving libya. Translator we are migrating. Our boat sank. It was in a bad condition. People died. The libyans saved us, may god bless them. This is called the route of death, the grave of the Mediterranean Sea. Reporter libya is one of the main transit roots for people fleeing conflict and poverty to make it to europe. International smugglers take advantage of libyas lawlessness. Libya is struggling to cope. People are forced to live in poor conditions and lack basic medical care. In another tragic incident a swedish vessel docked in the italian port of palermo after rescuing hundreds from their boat drifting at sea. But dozens others werent so lucky, their bodies found in the hull of the boat. This is one of the tragedies we have seen a lot in the mediterranean. This is the first time for this swedish crew and swedish ship. Unfortunately its one of many in total. Reporter the u. N. Estimates that more than 2,400 have died trying to cross the mediterranean see so far this year. Hundreds of thousands have made the crossing into europe so far this year in a desperate attempt to improve their lives, many are families traveling with children. The European Union is still trying desperately to establish a coordinated strategy to resolve this latest crisis. In the meantime, the people keep coming lets hear from a professor in refugee and forced migration studies from the university of oxford. Professor we said just a few moments ago that these two tragic event, the people that died in the mediterranean, and the poor people in the truck in austria ought to shock politicians into some sort of action. Will it . These are really shocking events. People are dying in europe and on the border of europe, and while europe is skaubling about what to do, people are dying. This is a refugee crisis predominantly, and it is the first time europe has faced a mass influx of refugees from outside of the region, and politicians are passing it around like a hot potato, failing to take decisive coordinated action. What sort of coordinated action is needed right now . I think we need a comprehensive refugee policy for europe. It needs three levels of action. Firstly we need to show better solidarity with regions of origin. 95 of the worlds refugees are from countries in conflict. We need to recognize that and support it with Development Systems and then ables neighboring countries to cope better. Nextly we need coordination and responsibility sharing in europe. 300,000 have arrived in greece and italy this year. We have 28 Member States. 300,000 divided by 28 should be mangle. But the Current System places responsibility on frontline states like italy and greece, and leaves others further away with less responsibility. We need renewed cooperation. And thirdly and finally on a national level, politicians have to show moral courage and leadership. They need to educate their public on why he need to help these people and show solidarity globally. 2. 5 thousand people have died so far this year alone, trying to cross the mediterranean. Why hasnt all of this happened before now . These are shocking numbers. And somehow politicians in many European Countries are caught between political language that is antiimmigration at the domestic level and the need to show external solidarity. Germany is an exception in this debate. Sweden is an exception. And we have seen Angela Merkel rightly praised by barack obama this week. But countries further away, perhaps like the u. K. Are showing a relatively historical response, and they need to do more to recognize the rights of refugees and take their electorates and publics with them to explain what is going on. The break down really is at the european level, 28 Member States are failing to cooperation, and with the exception of germany there is not enough leadership. How do you get through to the governments on a national level. The british response, putting up fences, for example. That is not the right response is it . No, militarized solutions wont work, building fences wont work. We need to recognize most people who are coming are from refugeeproducing countries, syria, iraq, afghanistan. We have obligations to those people, and it means that we need to recognize that, articulate it, explain it to the general public, and then coordinate, so we have fair responsibility share, but that requires honesty and bravery by our politicians. I want to put two final questions to you. These 71 people who died in the truck, obviously it was a people smuggling operation involved in that. To what extent does people smuggling need to be tackled here by governments . And how you talk about governments needing to to plan a more coordinated response, how do they sell that to a skeptical public . I think the smuggling issue is a its not the cause of migration, its a symptom of an underlying reason why many people seek to come to europe, and most smugglers are actually not large criminal networks. They are small operators praying on vulnerable people. But we have to deal with the route causes of the Refugee Movement . And provide legal ways to access europe. Thats the way to put smugglers out of business. I think really coordination is not taking place in part because of scepticism. In the u. K. The two biggest issues where there is scepticism are europe and immigration. But we have got to Work Together within europe and broadly through international cooperation. Thank you very much indeed. Thank you. The u. N. East envoy to libya says that peace talks must be formed. A new round of talks sundayway in morocco, libya has two rival parliaments, but only one side is represented at the latest meeting. Government forces in yemen say the country will eventually have a new professional army. Opposition houthi fighters, and army units loyal to the former president saleh will be disbanded. Only civilians along with tribesmen who fought with Government Troops will be entitled to join the force. Reporter there were mostly militia men or civilians who took up arms against the houthis in the south. Now they have been recruited to join yemens new army. The countrys military is known for being divided along tribal and sectarian lines. Some of these trainees were forced to retire under former president saleh. There was inherent mistrust among the people. Translator we formed this battalion a few weeks ago. There are about 4,800 soldiers and officers. They have mostly been drawn from the civilians who fought off the invaders. Reporter across the country, plans are underway to build support for exiled president hadi. But his return to power depends on an army that is loyal to him. This is a gathering of tribal leaders in a province on yemens border with saudi arabia. Some of these tribal leaders had links with the houthis. Now they are switching sides. They are joining with Government Forces to recapture the province of sadah. Translator we are making preparations to start a military campaign to liberate the province. We regret not taking up arms against the rebels in the past. Now we will hunt them and defeat them and seize their strong hold on sadah province. Reporter but the new army has a long way to go. Lacking training and resources, it remains outnumbered and outgunned by forces allied with the houthis, and some of these fighters are more loyal to their tribal leaders than the army. In the past few months many military units defected and joined the rebels. For now there are two armies fighting for control. The one in the north is mainly shia, and the one in the south is mainly sunni, leaving an uncertain future. Hashem ahelbarra, al jazeera. Security is tight there as police check demonstrators as they rife to protest against government corruption among other things. On the line now is zana hoda. Describe what is going on around you right now, and tell us more about what these protests are about. Reporter well, like you mentioned people have started to gather, but clearly the numbers are much larger than in previous weeks, previous fridays. We have to remember that for the first time an influential Political Party, the Southern Movement called on its supporters to participate in the rally. We have expecting, really, a much larger turnout than over the past few weeks. I met a civil activist here. You have to remember this started as a grassroots movement, a spontaneous movement, and i asked him what he felt now that a Political Party joined. He said well, we were afraid of this from the beginning, but at the end of the day, we do need support for the reforms to push through, and we are welcome the support just as long as there will be tangible results. People are losing patience as you can imagine. Its not just better services. They are now demanding an end to corruption. Corrupt officials to leave power and even some of them are [ inaudible ] political system which divides power among, you know, sects and political parties. What are we to make of the fact in a city which experiences violence almost on a daily basis, this is expected to be a largely peaceful protest . Reporter well, so far, over the previous weeks they have been peaceful. But security is very tight. A lot of roads in baghdad have been closed. If you want to reach the [ inaudible ] you have to sometimes walk between two to three kilometers, so authorities are not taking any chances. At the end of the day this really is a major challenge for abadi to push through these reforms. He does have the backing of people in the streets. Has the backing of iraqs highest shia authority, but he is facing powerful forces within the government from from within his own ruling alliance, within the shia political landscape, and really, for the first time what we are seeing is these rival shia factions an open divide, even though here when you see people carrying iraqi flags and they talk about unity, yes, they may have been able to overcome the sectarian divide, but it is deepening a divide within the shia political landscape. All right. Zana many thanks. The most senior vatican official to be charged with child sex abuse has died before he could go on trial. He was a former ambassador to the dominican republic. These marches often result in clashes between the police and protesters, and this one was no exception with tear gas and Water Cannons being deployed and protesters throwing some stones. The government says it doesnt have the money to implement these changes students are demanding. These marches are likely to continue for sometime to come. U. S. President barack obama has been meeting with the people of new orleans. It has been ten years since the city was devastated by hurricane katrina, and the process of rebuilding has been something of a struggle as Andy Gallagher reports. Reporter this isnt president obamas first time in new orleans. He has marked anniversaries of the hurricanes devastation before. But unlike previous visits, he talked about the citys rising poverty, particularly amongst its African American population, addressing a gathered crowd in the lower ninth ward he tackled the issue head on. Our work here wont be done when almost 40 of children still live in poverty in this city. Thats not a finished job. Thats not a full recovery. Reporter outside the neighbors new 20 Million Community center, residents waited to catch a glimpse of the president. He remains popular in this community, but many here have complaints about what they say as the citys uneven recovery. They should have gave it to the people here. But they didnt because the majority of these people was black and they was poor. To rent a home, one bedroom is at least 900. So the the rental issue for housing, the the market, just skyrocketed. Reporter to compound all of that, the lower ninth ward still carries highly visible scars. To witness firsthand the kind of challenges president obama was talking about, you only having to walk a couple of feet to see things like this, less than half of the population of the lower ninth ward ever returned to this city, and to address the challenges, maybe the biggest challenge for post katrina new orleans. Despite the challenges new orleans has made progress. Campaigners are warning of an ecological emergency in the dead sea. It has seen its waters vanish at the wait of more than 1 meter a year. Reporter it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the region. But environmentalists say the dead sea is shrinking rapidly. The ancient salt lake famous for its highly salted water and mineral rich mud has been losing a meter of its waters every year. An israeli tour guy says the decline of the dead sea and apparently indifference of neighboring governments has been shocking. I see the dead sea as an international property. Its really one in a kind in the world. And it should be International World heritage, and instead of we are destroying it, and its being degraded from daytoday. Reporter the dead sea is shrinking because 70 of its natural water sources are being diverted by israel and jordan and to a lesser degree syria for farming and drinking water. The remaining 30 of deterioration is called by israeli and jordanian potash mining operations. And environmentals are also concerned about the hundreds of sinkholes that have opened up around it since the 1980s. Swallowing up roads and power lines, resulting in the closure of several nearby beaches and businesses. Actually the basic reason for the sinkhole development is the drop in the level of the dead sea, and associated with that drop is the drop in the grown water level, and that causes areas that were previously within salty water to be flushed by sweet water, fresh water. Reporter some projects have been launched to try to save the dead sea, but environmentalists warn it could take decades to repair the damage, and that until neighboring countries stop diverting waters to the ancient lake, or put an end to their mining practices, its all but certain to dry up. What is happening now is quite different these are refugees and their numbers are growing rapidly, an estimated 3,000 crossed the water from turkey in just the last 24 hours, and theres no riding them. There is a turkish population of 1. 8 million people, but there are now 450,000 syrians also living here. That puts enormous strains on health services, education services, and on social services. Among the biggest frustrations of Syrian Refugees living here is being essentially caught in a limbo situation. Those in camps have no homes to go to, those living amongst the Community Find it very difficult to find enough work. There simply arent enough jobs going around. The ones that make it further into europe, they are the ones who can afford it. These smuggling routes are controlled by smugglers. Reporter this combined drill is the largest Live Fire Exercise ever carried out by the south korean military, and it comes in the same week that north and south korea settled at least for now some of the most serious tensions in the last couple of years. This exercise is interesting in terms of the types of scenarios being rehearsed here. There is a wartime scenario, but also a peacetime one, which involves south korea responding to a enemy provocation. Thats very much a physical playing out of the president s response policy to any kind of north korean provocation, and shes here watching on as this exercise is carried out, fresh from what many here as something of a vindication of her government hard line stance in termsover the negotiated settlement. The president is looking to maintain her harsh position against any military provocation while being open to cultural exchanges. A polish official says that he has seen images from a groundpenetrating radar that seemed to prove the discovery of an armored nazi train. It comes after two men say they found the train in a disused tunnel. Local rumor says it is full of valuables. The valuables were reportedly stolen from jews during the war. In may 1944 at the height of the second word war more than 70 prisoners of war escaped from a camp in berlin. It became one of the most celebrated episodes of the war, and inspired the hollywood film the great escape. Now one of the last survivors had died. He was 101. His death leaves just one survivor of that legendary escape still live today. Jane dutton spoke of a professor who explained the part that royal played. He was one of the men who prepared the escape, involved with many others as well. Their task was to build a tunnel in fact they built three. And he prepared the building of the tunnel, and he was one of the men who was lucky enough to be chosen to exit the tunnel on that fateful evening. The film features the role of americans and the airmen who escaped were british airmen. They came from the u. K. And canada and australia, and new zealand and south africa, so thats the biggest disportion, perhaps, and something that bothered royal a little. And there is of course, no Steve Mcqueen figure, theres no such attempt to cross the border on a motor bike. Why did they feel the need to leave . Many of them would have given themselves some kind of chance of making what they called the home run, that is getting back to the u. K. And continuing the war as airmen. Others would have thought even if they didnt make it back to the u. K. Escaping had some kind of value, because they knew the germans would have to recapture them, commit resources to recapturing them. In a way it was a form of continuing the war effort. Hitler discovered was told of the escape. His initial inclination was to direct that all of those men who we recaptured be executed. They settled on a figure of 50 men. 50 men who escaped and recaptured were murdered in cold blood. And very clearly a breech of international law. When the bill was being made, i believe that a lot of the pilsnerss prisoners of war asked that the details not be released of assist they got from their home countries. Thats right. One of the australians involved was responsible for making compasses, for example. And all of that was kept very secret at the time. Within the camp it was important that the planning was kept among a small group of men. And its crucial that word not get out, because otherwise the germans would have nipped it immediately in the bud. An amazing story. Now time for sport. Thank you.
