Abuse in the country and asking how hundreds of children could have been abused for so long. And we visit the south Africa Wildlife park which says hunting is good for conservation. We begin this news hour in turkey where a series of attacks have taken place across the country. The latest happened when kurdish fighters opened fire on a helicopter in the province and four Police Officers killed by a land mine near the border with iraq and earlier two attackers opened fire on the u. S. Consulate building in istanbul, that followed an explosion outside of a Police Station in another district which injured seven people. Bernard smith has more from istanbul and warning that the report has strong images from the start. Reporter chased down to a back street near the u. S. Consulate in istanbul, a woman who earlier opened fire on the building refuses to surrender, i did it for my party she shouts. Before being shot and wounded by a police officer. A second attacker also female escaped from the area which is in a suburb on the european side of istanbul. In 2013 an extreme Left Wing Group said it was behind a suicide bomb attack in the capitol ankora. Translator i saw this woman running and the police shouting stop. They fired warning shots and someone in an apartment threw a chair from the balcony at the woman so the attackers shot at the balcony. Reporter earlier on monday a bomb exploded outside a Police Station on istanbuls asia side at the eastern edge, there several civilians and Police Officers were wounded and then as forensic and bomb squad teams searched the scene two attackers opened fire on then and a policeman and two others were killed in a shoot out and further violence in southeast turkey where they are involved in renewed fighting with the p. K. K. And four officers were killed when they hit a roadside bomb and a separate incident a soldier was killed when the helicopter came under fire from suspected p. K. K. Fighters and it faces security threats on fronts not just from i. S. I. L. And events in the last 24 hours would seem to support those concerns. And bernard joins us live from istanbul and bernard first of all tell us more about this party and the woman who attacked the u. S. Consulate is talking about there in your report because this party i believe has now had responsibility. Laura, im sorry the line is not very good but the woman, the party that claimed responsibility for this attack on the american consulate is the peoples revolutionary Liberation Army and its dh. K. P. C. And they were responsible for a Suicide Attack on the u. S. Embassy in 2013 and now claiming responsibility for the attack on the u. S. Consulate and two women from the group attacking the u. S. Consulate. The claim of responsibility came from their website, not so long ago today. Its a very Left Wing Group and an example for the turkish government of the different threats it says it is facing. There have been hundreds of arrests over the last three weeks and not just of people supporting i. S. I. L. But p. K. K. And separatist worker and other groups that turkey considers a threat to state security, laura. If we look at the attacks in the southeast the finger there obviously pointing to the Kurdish Group, the p. K. K. Do you think we will now see more of an offensive against them . Well, all of this violence really has really spiked within the last three weeks towards the end of july the turkish government changed tact and joined the u. S. Coalition fight against i. S. I. L. , allowed its bases to be opened up and used and simultaneously while Turkish Military did launch some strikes on i. S. I. L. The majority of the strikes have been on p. K. K. Targets and we have seen that uptick in violence really come about since towards the end of july and those arrests also all over turkey and members of groups banned organizations seem to have provoked this increase in violence particularly this incident that is being claimed for by the far Left Wing Group, laura. Reporting from istanbul and thank you very much barnard and Syrian Rebels say they made advances to the Assad Government and taken villages and mountains in the province and rebels have taken most of northern idlib and going to the families and stronghold of latakia and we repo report. Reporter opposition fighters say they forced out Government Forces from many areas in central syria. This is the Hana Providence and see it as a point to the advance of the governments stronghold of latakia and its home to president bashar alassad. Translator there is no red line in our advance, the next fighting will be on the coast and we are almost at the coast. Reporter [gunfire] the army of conquest has been making steady gains against the government and includes el nusra and who the u. S. Considers a terrorist organization and its the most effective force against the government and i. S. I. L. And has over taken Idlib Province and moving to latakia from the north as well. As opposition tanks roll into areas they have taken signs of the fighting are everywhere and major parts of syria are rubble in the war that is now in the fifth year. Some of those who came back say their homes have been destroyed. Translator they left nothing for us. They have damaged the houses and stolen the belongings. Thank god, we have returned safely. Reporter beyond these mountains there is rare discontent in latakia. These protesters gathered against president assads cousin and killed a colonel over a traffic dispute last week and a crack down on protests and opposition. The Assad Government control shrinks over syria demonstrations are starting to happen in support, al jazeera. Police in pakistan say they arre arrested seven men of sexually abusing hundreds of children and selling videos of the alleged crimes and centers on a small village in the district of punjab and we have more. Reporter he says he was raped by three men four years ago. We are using a different name to protect his identity. At the time he was 11 years old. Afterwards he said he had to pay the men not to reveal what they had done to him. Translator they made a video out of it and started blackmailing me and they told me to bring them more kids. My family is poor, i had nothing to pay them. So i left school and worked in the fields. I gave them everything i made. Reporter over the last month reports have come out that at least 284 children in this small village in punjab state was sexually abused and people in the Community Say 400 videos of the attacks were made and sold across pakistan and overseas. You wouldnt normally see such a large gathering of people from the village in the middle of the day but all of the neighbors are coming out and talking about the case and all demanding one thing and say they want justice and for whoever was behind this abuse to either be stoned to death or to be hanged. And he agrees. A week ago he started to protest march with victims families and it was stopped by Police Firing tear gas. And he is being charged under pakistans antiterrorism law and said some of the child abusers are wellknown. Translator they are influential people and work for the courts and drug inspectors. Because of the threats everyone is afraid of them and they harass people everyday. Reporter some people in the village say police were paid bribes not to investigate. The police deny it. Translator when we heard about the allegations i sent out an officer to the village and we announced on the loudspeaker if there are evidence of abuse they should come forward but no one came forward. Reporter he shows us injuries he received when the police beat him for publically protesting against the abuse. Translator because of dignity and honor some people are not coming forward. Coming up, here on this news hour, a mexican mystery, an activist who tried to find out the truth about what happened to 43 missing students is found dead. And a weapon of war claiming civilian lies and people working life and limb to diffuse land mines across yemen. The new mexican start has a debut in search of one of the greatest ever players. Joe will have the details. Votes counted in haiti at long delayed parliamentary elections and had delays and disorder and some reports of fraud and rob reynolds has more from the capitol Port Au Prince. Reporter it appears to be calm and people are going about their business as usual however reports have come in of violent incidents in the country, shots being fired and in many places and polling places in towns and villages and no reports of deaths or injuries. About 5 of all the voting stations were trashed by mobs. That remains to be seen what the Voting Commission or council will be able to do about that if anything. And it marred what had been seen as a test of haiti democracy. Voters streamed into polling places across haiti to take part in parliamentary elections and there were problems but there didnt appear to be serious or widespread violence. At this voting station many people complained their names were not included on lists of eligible voters. That led to shouting and angry confrontations between disappointed citizens and election workers and many people wound up going home without casting their votes. I feel im not an hatian without the right to vote. Reporter several polling places in Port Au Prince were trashed leaving ballots and other materials strewn about and 1500 Centers Nationwide were shut down due to various problems and observers expect a low turnout. And she heads the eu oberer mission. There are some incidents in some centers but its not the general rule. The rule is that we say it will be maintained all along the day. Reporter one voter who had no trouble was the president of haiti. A lot of problems here and people say they are not being allowed to vote. Reporter he wasnt taking any questions. And he is not eligible to run for another term. These elections are about much more than filling empty seats in parliament. Haiti has many problems. Without political stability the country wont be able to attract International Investment and continuing projects meant to raise the standard of light for people will suffer if the political situation deteriorates and many are in remote parts of the countryside and must be taking to Port Au Prince to be counted by hand. What happens next . Well, the Election Council will release results in about ten days and they will know who won the election but the top vote gutters will then face off in a second round, a runoff round in october and also in october there are 50 candidates for president , they will go into the first round of voting for that office and then there will be another runoff for the final top vote gutters in the president ial contest and it will take place in december and there are plenty of opportunities for hatians to exercise their democratic right and plenty of opportunities for things to turn out badly if violence increases over the course of this long electoral cycle. In mexico an activist who had been leading the search for 43 missing students who disappeared last year has been found dead. And the body was discovered near his home in the southwest state of guerro over the weekend and john holdman is live in mexico and john why might this man have been targeted . Well, this man was essentially doing work and definitely organized crime in the state and to some extent the government would prefer he hadnt had done. He was looking for bodies in the state and he and his organization had already found over 120 bodies while they were searching for 43 students that went missing late last year at the hands of the local authorities and organized crime so he was definitely an uncomfortable figure both to the local authorities and to criminal groups there and he told al jazeera when we went to visit him about a month ago that he had been threatened, he had been intimated and he had been followed while he was going about his work. And he had been doing good work and what is the reaction to his death . Well, the reaction im in vera cruz at the moment, on the other side of the country but experiencing similar types of problems, widespread impunity, 14 journalists have been killed here, no one has been held accountable. Speaking to the people here its sadness that another figure that apparently as you say was trying to do good work, work that the authorities werent doing to a large degree in his state has been targeted so the reaction is sadness. No huge reactions yet from the authority but from local colleagues here and from National Colleagues many of whom have been covering the story there is the reaction that mexico could have been moving it forward. What does it mean for more activists who are also doing similar work, is it going to stifle their efforts . Well, the central message i think that comes out of this and it comes out of also events last week, a journalist was killed in mexico city and fled from where i am vera cruz and he was murdered as well. All of these types of events and its not one but cumulative effect spread the message in mexico of impunity and when an activist or a journalist or someone trying to speak out for human rights is murdered or silenced nothing much will happen about it and that of course cant be good for a country struggling with the problems of organized crime, struggling with problems of torture and even at the hands of the authorities that mexico is struggling with. John holdman reporting live from mexico and thanks very much, john. A man is in Critical Condition in the u. S. City of ferguson after an exchange of gunfire with police. It happened as demonstrators marked a year since teenager Michael Browns death and he was unarmed when he was shot by a white police officer. Conservationist in africa calling for changes to laws that regulate hunting and they say rhino and elephants and lions in the wild have dropped to the lowest levels ever because of hunting and poaching and 20 years ago there were 250 lions and today that figure is just over 30,000 and rhino and elephants under threat and 500,000 african elephants left down from the 5 million last century. Its not easy to stop hunting in africa. The industry is worth around 675 million. And it has created jobs. 70,000 in south africa alone where there is a high rate of unemployment. And miller reports from a Wildlife Reserve where hunters say they are helping conservation efforts. Reporter winter in south africa brings with it the hunting season. We are at a private game reserve in the province home to thousands of wild animals. Local hunter and team are on the look out for their first kill. Do you think this is the right place to start stalking . Normally occur in type of area . Its wintertime now and its a flat area going through this mountain. Reporter it can take days to find the right animal. Old bull. Old mature bull. Very fresh from the signs of it. Its a challenge and walking and stalking the animal. Reporter on this familyowned reserve a game is selected for hunting to keep the numbers down and maintain the ecological balance and this 50year veteran hunting is also a way of life. We stayed on the farm and, yes, it was the spark of life, you know the hunting scenario. We said far away there was no meat valuable and we lived off the land. Reporter he takes aim and 7,000 hunters visited south africa two years ago, more than half of them from the United States and the association of south africa says it contributed millions to the economy. These lions are kept at a separate enclosure at the reserve for tourists and conservation and are not hunted but its the killing of a famous loo lion in zimbabwe and say its cruel and unethical and threatens endangered the species and did not go against regulations. The future of the Economic Contribution of hunting, decisions regarding that cannot be based on emotion. Reporter Zimbabwe Community based conservation effort camp fire believes human wildlife contact should be managed. A balance between hunting and conservation and from camp fire experience you cannot hunt unless you made a contribution to the species. Reporter the sport and passion for many continues to be legal this time he did not make a kill. Al jazeera. Well earlier i spoke to steve, the director of programs for wild animal protect and says eco tourism is a far more profitable industry than hunting. Its not just cecil the lion we have heard about in resent weeks that has been a victim of the big game trophy hunting industry but it has been hundreds of thousands of other animals and we have seen the Lion Population alone in africa decline massive like 20 . People are always going to want to hunt and does regulated hunting limit at least poaching . There is no evidence that regulated hunting is stopping poaching. We are still seeing huge numbers of animals being taken illegally again with zimbabwe with cecil taken by a member of a professional association. So there is a thin one here for professional hunters who use the conservation argument to carry on with business as usual and their business as usual is actually wiping out africas wildlife. The real answer is to build on the eco tourism, going out to africa to shoot a lion or an elephant with a camera instead of a gun, that, in fact, that is Global Industry is worth Something Like 40 billion and its growing but if africa is not careful its going to allow the industry to wipe out the greate greatest asset. Does it bring in more than hunt something . Yes, in kenya you see half a billion in the economy for people going to safari and looking at them through binoculars or take a photograph and they want a thrill and a head of a lion stuck in their dentist practice or living room and go out and spend that sort of money, that is not about conservation, that is about thrill seekers who want to take lives. How do you change the attitude and how do you stop people wanting to hunt and get those trophies . Well, i think first of all we have to ask ourselves the question is it right . Is it ethical or moral to take the lives of animals, simply to feed the demand of the hunting community. And we need to start by stopping the trophy hunting of big game animals, animals like cecil. Lets make his legacy a permanent ban on the trophy hunting of lions throughout africa and lets follow it by stopping the hunting of other big game and animals like elephants which are in terrible decline. Still to come here on the Program Indonesia suffering from a chronic malnutrition problem that is not only stunting childrens growth but also the economy. We cannot trust you any more, you damage our sport. And we will tell you why these athletes are slamming athletics governing body. It creates a huge opportunity for the Small Business owners. These are all different strains. 150,000 people injured every year. 33,000 are killed. To see my child laying on the table. What was that total bill from start to now . Almost like 10 million dollars. Enough people have decided that the gun lobby has too much power for too long. The nra is not invincible. Hello again im laura kyle and these are the top stories on al jazeera,a series of attacks across turkey and suspected Kurdish Forces opened fire on a military helicopter in the southeast and they opened fire on the u. S. Consulate building and a bomb exploded outside a Police Station injuring seven people. [gunfire] Syrian Rebels say they made advances against Government Forces in the west. And taken villages and mountains and pushing to the assad familys stronghold of latakia. And police in eastern pakistan say they arrested seven men accused of sexually abusing children and selling videos of the alleged crimes and this is a small village in the punjar province. More now on those attacks in turkey and over the last two weeks Turkish Security forces moved against several groups all at once. Inside the country the government has targeted the revolutionary Peoples Liberation front or d. H. K. P. C. , many of their members have been arrested in nationwide raids since july and behind a suicide bombing in ankera two years ago and limited number of strikes also launched at i. S. I. L. Targets over the borders and the broader offensive is due soon and u. S. Jets are using it for raids in northeast syria and the biggest is p. K. K. And they launched hundreds of air strikes against the Kurdish Armed group so far and claimed to have killed hundreds of their fighters. And we have a senior fellow at the institute at the American University of beirut. Lets look a little bit more about turkeys battle against i. S. I. L. And we are looking at this broader of offensive that will begin soon and what do they now have against i. S. I. L. . The truth is we dont really know because turkey is spending time and effort on attack on kurds than it is attacking i. S. I. L. But really the complexity of the situation is created by the fact that you have here converging at least five different dynamics, the collapse of the syrian state, the rise of the Islamic State as its called, the push by the kurds to expand their territory, to expand their proto state. The continuing incoherence of american policy in the region and the turkish desire to minimize the power of the kurds and the emergence of a kurdish state. Internally in turkey you have kurdish, the revolutionary groups and p. K. K. And others who are attacks Kurdish Forces and all have come together simultaneously to create the situation. This is typical of what is going on in the region as big powers like turkey and saudi arabia, like iran start pushing their and throwing their weight around and attacking militarily here and there and the americans and russians kind of join in where they can so this is a terribly violent complex and almost total totally incoherent situation and it will workout in time but in the meantime there will be more violence and much more human suffering especially in syria and iraq. Coherent and it looks that way and i was going to ask you how the dynamics Work Together and going against i. S. I. L. And p. K. K. And the Kurdish Force being the most effective force against i. S. I. L. Right, and as the americans and others in the region try to put together a more coherent coalition that could effectively fight, contain and defeat i. S. I. L. Militarily on the short run they run into these contradictions so you have the americans not wanting to work with proiran forces and iraq where the proiran forces are among the most effective in fighting i. S. I. L. And the americans want to fight with the y. P. G. And the Kurdish Group in syria and the turks are attacking that group because they dont want it to expand. So this is the problem that you get inevitably when you get Foreign Military power being used across the region, American Power mostly combined with the really new development now and this is the historic new development that we are just seeing the consequences of which is regular powers namely turkey, saudi arabia, iran and maybe soon egypt getting involved militarily all across the region and cross border fighting like in yemen, like in syria, like in libya and in other places. So there is just total incoherence across the board and will not resolve very quickly but it will resolve itself over time as we see what happens to the kurds and their attempt to create at least a quasi and official state which will happen inevitably, there is no doubt its going to happen but more importantly what happens to the unity of the sovereign states of iraq and syria, can they regain some kind of integrity, thats not clear yet and what happens to the Islamic State, the so called Islamic State, that is not clear yet. Messy and volitile and thanks for is shedding like on this and malaki has support of plans to reform the government and the current Prime Minister abadi wants to get rid of the roles of deputy minister and Vice President and follows demonstrations and corruption and the lack of basic services and we have more from baghdad. Iraq parliament to meet on tuesday to discuss the decisions from abadi to cut some top leadership positions in the country. Now, in baghdad we have spoken to many people who said they support the Prime Ministers decisions and the government implement reforms and yet there is a lot of citizens on the streets about how long it will take parliament to actually debate these issues. When it comes to parliamentary issue as lot of times in the past the ugly sectarian of politics raised its head and that could happen again and parliament here under immense amount of pressure to get these reforms passed and make sure people here get basic Services Like electricity and like air conditioning and clean water for their families as soon as possible. There is mounting anger in the country and many people we spoke will come out and massive protests for this friday despite the fact they will take up the issue on tuesday and we are hearing that thousands upon thousands of people could be coming out on to the streets yet again this upcoming friday in several cities. Now yemen people wounded in fighting with rebels are flown to jordan for treatment. Nearly 100 people arrived in annan on saturday and the workers say they were suffering from injuries including gunshot wounds and Doctors Without Borders explain how the conflict is taking a heavy toll. After four months and a half of very harsh conflict the system, the Health System is on the verge of collapsing. This is true in aiden as well and it was very dangerous to move around. Sometimes at checkpoints people were stopped but also people had no means to pay for drugs and to get medical care so in aiden we have i mean they have one hospital and the three other hospitals are functional but we were all treated and wounded. Land mines planted across yemen are also a danger to civilians and last months fighters loyal to exiled hadi drove from the city of aiden and are now struggling to make the area safe and lee barker reports. Reporter as the front line in the battle for control of yemen moves north, certain dangers remain and many land mines have been planned by Houthi Rebels and supporters who are loyal to saleh and the district of aiden the conflict has moved on but life is far from safe. This car was thrown to the air by a powerful blast. Progovernment troops have now sealed off entire neighborhoods. Translator we discovered antitank mines among residential neighborhoods. We will continue our operation to clear land mines from this area. Reporter proGovernment Forces have diffused hundreds of land mines and they say they are working without proper equipment. Translator we need tools, food and uniforms and weapons and everything, engineers have not been provided with basic needs. Reporter this brother and sister were seriously injured in a land mine explosion. The same blast killed five members of their family, an elder relative tells what happens. Translator they were hit by a land mine on their way home to the village, the mother, the son and three daughters were killed, three others were injured. Reporter officials in aiden say they are struggling to deal with the threat posed by land mines and calling on the Saudiled Coalition which has been conducting air strikes against Houthi Rebels to send in specialist teams to help restore safety to the city streets, lee barker, al jazeera. Prison in iran wrapped up with a verdict expected in a week and jason was arrested more than a year ago accused of spying and working for the Washington Post and it is condemned by the government and press freedom groups and his family. He is paying the price for the decision, the animosity and the paranoyia between the two countries for more than 37 years. Irans judiciary claims to be independent but this has all been behind closed doors and i have no idea what has happened. I can tell you that jasons rights as an iran citizen have not been fulfilled. Malnutrition is a global problem. The latest report from the World Food Program says 795 Million People do not have enough food for a healthy act of life, one in nine on earth and sub sahara is the highest hunger and one in four are under nourished and hundreds of millions are under weight and stunted the growth of a quarter of the worlds children. Indonesia has the fifth highest child malnutrition rates in the world and as Stephanie Decker reports from western java its not only a social and Health Concern but also could have repercussions for the economy. Reporter his tummy hurts. But he cannot put that into words. At almost three years old he should be bigger and he still cant talk or walk. Four of his siblings have already died of malnutrition, a condition caused by a lack of food and nutrients and his father shows how sometimes he eats the crumbled bricks of the wall. Translator i often wait for my husband all day to bring money. He often comes home empty handed. Our children cry at home asking for food but we cannot give it. Reporter this is some of what they can afford, stale rice full of ants and we are told its duck food and this kind of diet is having an impact on the children across indonesia. Malnourished stunted children are smaller than others and the brain is different and intelligence is not as good as other kids and lack of knowledge by the parents, we need to teach them it needs to be addressed. Reporter one of the main causes of malnutrition is poverty, the lack of opportunity and no access to education. Its something that affects millions of people and what that means here in indonesia is onethird of children under five years old are stunted, that is according to a World Bank Report and what that means is they are not developing properly and many are worried that could have implications on this countrys future. And that is something the world bank has been pushing the indonesia government to take seriously. In terms of prosperity you are not making use of potential of close to 40 of the population so its as simple as that. You have people out there and these people are doomed to fail in society. They are not going to be able to contribute to generate and prosperity, right . Reporter the government has programs in place that deal with malnutrition but the figures show that stunting has not improved since 2010. And this is the older brother and he is 23 years old animal nutrition has meant lack of physical and Mental Development and many worry if nothing is done with the issue a third of the children could face the same fate, Stephanie Decker, western java. And marie is head of hunger at save the children and says global malnutrition is more serious than people realize. Children are not getting enough vitamin a and zync and iron and become deficient and not enough calories and are under weight and need the calories to grow and be strong and if their environment isnt right and they are not living in a clean hygiene environment, if they dont have access to clean Drinking Water and sanitation and this can be problematic if they pick up bugs and worms and can exacerbate the problem. For many of the countries have under nutrition and this is now becoming and seeing countries are dealing with the many types of mall knew malnutrition but deficiencies and overweight and obesity and many countries are dealing with these different types of malnutrition at the same time and countries facing very complex issues they need to solve. Reporter florida is often referred to as gods waiting room, retirement communities are ab ab abun abundant about it was created, designed and paid for by the postal union and people spent years delivering the mail and with letter carriers the decision to move to nalcrest was not obvious. I blew it off as a place where carriers go to sit down and talk about the good old days and didnt do anything so when i came to check it in 2003, i came in january and its the total opposite and fell in love with it. Reporter the idea came 50 years ago and it was simple, offer postal workers a cheap, comfortable place to live with neighbors who literally walked the same career path and its something that Paul Thompson says created a special place to live.
