In pakistan. Trying to survive death valley. Runners run an ultramarathon face soaring temperatures. First, the verdict in the retrial of all three al jazeera journalists is due to be handed down by a cairo court soon. They were accused of colluding are the muslim brotherhood. Their colleague was deported from egypt after 400 days in prison. Hes being tried in abstetia. They hope this will mark the end of a long ordeal. It began in december 2013 when peter and others arrested. They spent more than a year in a cairo jail, punk to a ate legald the trial was a farce. Journalists around the world protested in support of the al jazeera three. That didnt stop the court from convicting them, sentencing them to several years imprisonment, a verdict that provoked international outrage. The issue, we have been clear publicly and privately, they should be released. Eventually they overturned the verdict and ordered a retrial. Diplomatic pressure did pay off for peter released earlier this year. He made a return to australia. But hes not entirely free. A guilty verdict could limit his ability to travel and work. Obviously, for me, that would be a problem. What really matters is what it would mean to the other guys. There is still a serious danger that they could wind up back in prison. And that for all of us would be devastating. They have been released on bail, a chance to make up for lost time with a lost family and reflect on the significance of his case. Im just living day by day. I think peter will understand this. Im just living day by day. I dont hope anything, i dont expect anything. I will continue to fight for press freedom and for those still behind bars who are in desperate need for our support and help. Mohamed says hes a victim of poor relations. It says that after todays ruling it will carry on fighting for the al jazeera employees who were convicted to have their verdicts overturned. Malaysia sent settlers to the French Island in the indian ocean after part of a plane washed up there. They want to find out if its part of the plane that disappeared in march last year. Reporter on the tiny island in the indian ocean, this piece of what looks like a plane is getting a lot of attention. Translator we saw plane, we were near and as we were looking at it, i told myself its debris. Reporter aviation experts believe it could be part of mh 370 which disappeared last year. It matched one plane. It matched the platform in the rear of the plane. Everyone says it fits to the boeing 777. Which plane is missing in this area. Reporter for hours after the plane disappeared, this flight board said it was delayed. As family members gathered in malaysia and china, what happened became one of the greatest mysteries in aviation history. The boeing 77 went missing with 239 people on board on march 8 last year. It was destined for beijing. But the plane lost all contact around 40 minutes after takeoff. A massive search operation focused on corridors to the north and south. They have concentrated on a 60,000 square kilometer area off the coast of western australia. Now malaysia is sending a team to reunion island. Whatever wreckage found need to be further verified before we can further confirm whether it belongs to us or not. Reporter 370 continued to fly for more than six hours after it lost contact. Under the indian ocean, its hurricane type weather. Wreckage can get dislodged. These are floating devices which can surface themselves and be drifted off thousands and thousands of miles away. Reporter the search will continue and if the find is confirmed will prove the plane is somewhere to be found in the depths of the ocean. But for those on board, the nervous wait for answers continues. The aviation chrisates says even if this debris belongs to the missing plane, its unlikely to help where the plane crashed. If it does match up with other serial numbers that presumably Malaysia Airlines have in their database, then it will go as a first clue that this does indeed come from the aircraft in question. By the end of the day if something more is going to sir surface, we have seen the first glimmer of hope that something may well have surfaced that will give us a positive indication as to the eventual fate of the aircraft. I think that this would allow the investigators to track back, if you will, across the vast expanse of ocean to identify the final resting place of the main fuselage of the aircraft. Its highly unlikely. Russia blocked the establishment of an International Tribunal to prosecute those responsible for shooting down a Malaysia Flight over the ukraine. The country is representing the victims asked the cour to bringo justice. Those in favor of the draft resolution please raise their hand. The request seemed straight forward. An International Tribunal to hold accountable those responsible for the downing of mh 17. It came from the countries conducting the investigation of the incident which killed 289 men, women and children. Their work is expected to finish later this year. But the transport minister argued that now is the right time to establish a method for prosecuting the perpetrators, whoever they may be. The establishment of a tribunal would also ensure that this establishment is as defined as possible. But russia said no. They question the integrity of the investigation. And the motivation of the resolutions many sponsors. Translator the draft which was submitted for voting today was deprived of any legal basis or precedence. We have repeatedly explained this to our colleagues. However, responses of the draft refuse, submitted for a vote, knowing that this would not lead to a positive result. Reporter the veto was a blow to the victims families coming days after the incidents first anniversary. Most of the victims were dutch, 38 came from australia. The discredit ted contentions and anticipated excuses by the Russian Federation should be treated with the utmost disdane. The exercise of the veto today is an affront to the memory of the 298 victims of mh 17 and their families and friends. Reporter the countries who comprise the team, those most affected by the downing of mh 17, have vowed to find an alternative, another way to bring the perpetrators to justice. Finding a venue with the power to extradite suspects without the backing of the u. N. Security council could be difficult. The u. S. Says the latest reports of Afghan Taliban leaders death are credible. The Afghan Government announced on wednesday that he died in a hospital. Thats being denied by the taliban. There have been rumors of his death, but none confirmed. The taliban denied reports that peace talks with the Afghan Government which are due to resume in pakistan or perhaps in china. Lets talk more about this. We have a political analyst and commentator. Lets start with the fate, does it matter whether hes dead or alive. If hes been dead for more than two years, that hasnt impacted upon the taliban and it way it carries out its business. If you look at it on the ground politically, militarily, the death or when he was alive did not make much difference. Taliban have been fighting in afghanistan, they have been gaining ground. So militarily, it does not matter. But its important because the government would like to know who will be the last man that would ratify any agreement between the government and the taliban. Remember, taliban have always been saying that they are a united front, not even a front. A united body, one solid group with a strong leadership. Its interesting to see where the taliban will fracture into various groups or not. Nobody has reported having seen him for a long time, indeed. But there have been edicts coming from him, quite often his voice, voice recordings, hes made and online postings. Would they have been made in his name even though he actually died before . Most likely. Lets say if he did die two years ago, taliban will be angry in the battle field saying they were misled by someone else, by a group within the taliban claiming to be the leader and the leader was not there. If he did die two years ago and the leadership said that omar approves of this peace process, then thats not true. That means there was something going on behind that scene that possibly a coup within the taliban. If the government reached the agreement, the Sticking Point would be what would be the position of the taliban spiritual leader in the future. So omar was an obstacle to peace. With him out of the way, now taliban can reach an agreement and simply say we dont have a leader, our council has agreed its the best interest of the nation to make peace. Thank you for taking us through the perm tagses associated with the death of omar. Thank you. We have got more to come on the program, including the price of continuing the syrian war is simply too high. The u. N. Unveils its latest plan to help end the war in syria. Hello again. These are the top stories here at al jazeera. The verdict in the trial of three journalists is due to be handed down in the coming minutes or hours. Now, he was released after 400 days in prison but is still being tried. Reporter after more than a year in jail, peter was deported from egypt and returned to australia. But hes not technically free. Hes still on trial as our colleague whose are still in egypt. Sitting here in sydney, do you feel like a free man . It sounds ridiculous sitting here in this glorious sydney sunshine, pretty much able to go and do what i want to, the fact is i dont feel like a free man. We are still caught up in this judicial process, we are still on trial. Im on trial with my colleagues. We have a legal bottle to fight. There is still a prospect of a conviction. What are your hopes for the verdict . Obviously, im hoping that the judge will see a lack of evidence and throw the whole thing out. There was no more evidence that the prosecutor was able to present that wasnt in the first. Its quite clear that they were not involved with any of the things that the prosecutor is accused us of. We had no connections with the muslim brotherhood. We are the work of noblal journalists. We did not broadcast any false news. As long as the Court Follows the evidence, we can only come to one verdict, thats acquittals for all. Obviously, my biggest fear is that well not get just convictions, but the original sentence will be upheld. The court cant give us heavier sentences. But it can confirm the original sentences. For me that would be an inconvenience, im not going back to prison because im hear. But its serious. What will be the consequence of a guilty verdict . Well, for them, it could mean going back to prison. We hope that if they get a guilty verdict at the very most, they may end up with sentences for time served. And that would mean that they can go free immediately. For me it would be more difficult because it would mean that i would have to be under the same restrictions as the other journalists, i cant go to anywhere that has an extra addition treaty with europe. That would be difficult as a foreign correspondent. There is a force feeding of prisoners on a Hunger Strike. Human rights experts and israels medical association have condemned the move. He said this is not about force feeding, about giving the prisoners medical attention. They are concerned that someone on Hunger Strike could die. Looking at the facts, no one has died from being on Hunger Strike. But there have been cases of prisoners dieing because of being force fed. So hugely controversial. That is now law. How many prisoners currently does this effect . At the moment there are two. There have been three. One of them actually just recently stopped his Hunger Strike. Two administrative detention. The one that stopped will be released. The other one hasnt been charged. Another prison, he wants to be released to jordan. At the moment actively are two. What prisoners we spoke to, one former prisoner, in 1980 he was part of a Hunger Strike. He said it was horrendous. He said this is not about trying to save lives, this was trying to break our spirits, trying to stop our only way of resistance. A difficult and controversial situation at the moment. We dont know if this law is going to be implemented to those currently on Hunger Strike. It makes it legal so it is something having still a huge backlash. They are saying to doctors do not do it. The u. S. State department is saying that it is deeply concerned over israels approval for new settler homes in the occupy the west bank. Israel advanced plans for 504 new Housing Units in settlement areas in occupied east jerusalem. All israeli settlements are illegal. I give the floor to you. Reporter the u. N. Special envoy presenting his plan for syria. In the past they tried International Conferences and face to face peace talks. After four and a half years of bloodshed, now a much more modest proposal, setting up a series of working groups. Deepening tragedy, the u. N. Is obliged and all of us are to not get any stone unturned. Also, due to the ongoing serious conversation and discussions which are taking place, and we are hearing them around the region and elsewhere, which may require more time. Reporter he was referring to a number of important developments that the u. N. Believes could be positive. This is a holding plan. President s assads forces are losing on the battle ground. Perhaps in a matter of months his government will be prepared to make more concessions. The policy shift by turkey which is prepared to carry out air strikes could help the moderate opposition. And then there is the Iran Nuclear Deal that. Could change things, too. When there is a unity, solidarity shown by members of the council and european union, there is nothing which we cannot do. My message was that why dont you use this political great momentum and there is a very Important Role to be played by iran. Iran is crucially important player in the region. Reporter when he addressed the security council, the secretary general attacked their own divisions on syria. He said the conflict was a shameful symbol of the international communitys failure. The main People Associated with the attack, he is not one of them. One of his brothers is. They remain at large. The big issue, the reason why this has become a big issue is particularly because of the 11th hour pleas and petitions that went before his execution as far into 5 00 a. M. He was executed at 7 00 a. M. His lawyers up until the 11th hour petitioning the Supreme Court to stay on numerous grounds. Its been highly devicive across india. Its raised questions about justice system, about how these cases, particularly sensitive cases that dealt with the amount of time it takes to deliver justice, keeping in mind you are looking at 22 years since the blast took place. And also issues relating to the Death Penalty, which cases should it be applied to and should it have been applied to the case here. Keeping in mind some legal experts and activists saying in terms of those who have been handed down the Death Penalty in relation to the blast, there were ten others. None of them have been executed. And some played a far bigger or more Important Role in this case. Imagine running in temperatures of more than 40 celsius in one of the most hostile environments on the planet.
