The government scott walker is expected to make it official joining a field of republicans running for president. Plus, a twist a sequel for to kill a mocking bird prepares to hit stores. Welcome to Al Jazeera America im erica pitzi, in new york. We begin with greece. Deep in debt and up against a deadline. It is 1 00a. M. In brussels, the 25th hour in a longrunning negotiation with the countrys eurozone partners to start bailout talks. They have seen other deadlines come and go. This time its different. This time its nearly out of money. No deal means the country is likely forced to leave the eurozone, in greece everyone nose what is at stake, many are bracing for a catastrophe. You can see long lines. For two weeks people have been withdrawing whatever money they can from the imperilled banks. Greek Prime MinisterAlexis Tsipras insists that a deal is within reach. Translation im here already for another meeting. We owe that to the people of europe who wants europe united not divided. If we can reach an agreement tonight if all parties want it on a night that could reshape greece and redraw the e. U. , we are joined by Roxana Saberi in athens. Patricia sabga in athens tell us about some tough new measures understand decision. Well these are tough measures. Grease will have to pass reform laws as early as greece will have to pass reforms by wednesday, the blink of an eye. Other measures germany is talking about suspending grooeszs membership in the us open for up to five years eurozone for up to five years dont undersame times that. The or placing billions in state assets for privatisation to pay off the debts. These are tough measures and nds thrown greeces way. We were speaking with a group of pensioners and we asked what they thought. They were not happy. Their reaction was that they were stunned, incredulous. The more they spoke, the more emotional they began. The overwhelming emotion is anger. If youll recall germany had half of its debt forgiven after world war ii. And one of the countries that forgave them is greece. Its not just pensioners in the crosshairs of this crisis a lot of young people are wondering if they can build a future in greece and are looking into the idea of building their lives abroad. Reporter 24yearold elena is a lucky millennial in greece with roughly half of all young people unemployed here she is grateful for the job she has, even if its not the one she hoped for when she graduated college two years ago with an advertising degree. Translation this is not what i dreamed about. I thought i would be working in a company in a marketing department. Creating advertising. With greeces economy in tatters. Elana nose the odds of landing a dream job are slim. She is not giving up on her country. Translation i will stay in greece, stay here and support it. Elenas situation will look familiar to a lot of american millennials. A University Graduate working a job. The u. S. Economy hasnt been mired for the better part of five years. A lot of young people in this country are looking to build the futures abroad. There was never a trend to leave, and now there is. Maria heads Career Services at the graduate Business School in athens. A programme with close ties. The brain drain started five years ago. When the crisis hit, and it intensified for the past year. Our best and brightest are leaving the country. Over 200,000 greeks roughly 2 of the population left the country since the economy tanked. The majority looking for opportunities in other countries, like this group all planning to work abroad. Is it a more attractive option new . Well, most of us i think it is. As these are passing now, its a reflection of the political instability. This is more tempting option for all of us. Reporter all of them want to return to greece eventually. At what point does greece become attractive enough. Greece will be attractive to me because families and friends are here. Hopefully, in a few years, greece will give us more opportunity. My friends say if you go abroad youll return in five years or wouldnt do it. Lets hope five years from now. As the crisis drags on greeces economy falls into a deeper hole the more expensive it is to bail it out. Right now, the price tag is north of 80 billion. Thank you. Here is a look at how deeply in debt greece is. It hose more than 358 billion to the eurozone partners and the bank. Its more than 175 of the countrys total National Income and gross domestic product. Greece is looking to cover the debt. A professor of economics is at the stern school of business. He joins us from san francisco. Thank you so much. There have been so many deadlines throughout this. Meanwhile banks are running out of cash. Is this the make or break moment of greece. It is a make or break moment. I wouldnt know for sure if its moment or week. But hopefully the meetings theres a bunch of meetings well go from the finance ministers to the finance minister will produce a deal that the greeks can live with. And the europeans can live with as well. So they have a 72 hour deadline here. Do you think that greece will meet that . I dont think its impossible, but it is very difficult. But i dont think the actual 72 hours makes such a huge difference. I mean, if its not 72 hours, but is four or five days as long as greece passes some laws and basic laws like tax collection issues. You know new taxes, issues of pensions. Making sure contributions and pensions are balanced. As long as they pass the basic laws. Monday or tuesday or wednesday or thursday i think the deal will actually happen. There is a lack of trust between the europeans and the present greek government. There are two ways to fix it. One way is to pass the laws early, the other is for the proeuropean countries to sign the deal, and maybe also the possibility of having a National Unity government in greece where a number of proeuropean countries parties would participate, and that would be a way to satisfy the europeans on the lack of confidence issue. Theres talk of greece temporarily leaving the eurozone how bad would that bee for grooerks and on the flipside is it better for europe. I think the idea of a temporary effort doesnt make sense. A temporary effort without a specific time where greece comes back in doesnt make sense. Its a way to sweeten the idea of grexit to some audiences. Doesnt make sense for greece or europe. Let me explain why. Greece will collapse. We are talking about a country that can grow and be an equal partner in the european union, and will be a country at the periphery of humanitarian help. If the economic effect are limited therell be geopolitical effects. First, greece gets out of a club with no exit doors. What happens. Three years from now, someone wants to exit. It will be easy for them to come out. Theres a geopolitical problem. If greece exits the eurozone suddenly the position of greece is a corner of europe between europe and the middle east becomes different. Suddenly greece is small week country at the mercy of the strong powers of the middle east. It upsets the whole structure. Its a serious concern, and especially serious for the united states. That was niklas with the stern school of business. A lot of optimistic language from diplomats in vienna. Theres no deal in the iran nuclear talks. U. S. Officials say theres a number of hurdles so clear in order to finalise a deal. Iran and six powers have been at the negotiating table. James bays is in vienna for the talks. There has been positive and optimistic comments coming from key figures. Secretary of state john kerry said he had good meetings with his iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad zarif. Very good meeting, positive. I think we are getting to real decisions. We have a few tough things to do. Other Foreign Ministers have been arriving here too, including the Russian Foreign minister sergey lavrov, and the French Foreign minister laurent fabius. Translation i hope we are entering the last stage of this marathon negotiation. You know the position of france is a position of constructive firmness, and i hope it will allow us to reach the end quickly, to a satisfying result. Despite the optimistic tone, im told by those close to the negotiation, theres details to work out. Its not a done deal. Im told if they were able to do a deal right now, theres a lot of paperwork that needs to be worked on, and it would take some time. So the guidance im given, the earliest that a deal is possible, if they Reach Agreement and it is announced is some time monday. As diplomats try to work out a deal in vienna u. S. Lawmakers in washington are skeptical about an agreement with tehran. It appears as if the administrations approach to this was to reach whatever agreement the iranians are willing to enter into. I think it will be a hard sell. If its completed. In congress. It makes me anxious because what a deal looks like is incredibly important. And the problem here george is that we have gone from prevent iran from having a nuclear ability to managing it. Lawmakers on capitol hill say theyll review an agreement with the iranians to make sure they are held accountable. The u. S. Led coalition has been carrying out strikes against i. S. I. L. El chapo translated as shorty in english is small in stature, but cuts an imposing figure in the world of narco trafficking, and made the forbes billionaire list. Scott walker joins a crowded republican field. Well look at how he plans to separate himself from the others. The pt g. O. P. Wisconsin Governor Scott walker is expected to announce his candidacy for the presidency tomorrow. He is gathering supporters in milwaukee, making it owe initial monday evening. He will join a full feed of candidates vying for the gop nomination. 14 other republicans are trying to represent their party including ted cruz rand paul marco rubio, jed bush chris christie, rick perry, bobby jindal and donald trump. As Randall Pinkston reports, scott walker is counting on the fact that americans are looking for new blood in the white house. If we can do it in wisconsin, theres no doubt we can do it across america. Reporter wisconsin Governor Scott walker has been in office a few years, but made a quick rise within the Republican Party. So much so that his eyes or on the white house. Just like i ran for governor i want them to have a better state. I want them to have a better state and country. Walker was raised in a small town in wisconsin, showing an interest in politics as early as high school and says president ronald regan was his role model. Walker spent a few years in college, but did not graduate. The First Political campaign was for the Wisconsin State Assembly when he was 22 years old. He lost but ran in 1993. But served in the state legislator for more then a decade. In 2010, walker decided to run for governor of josh wesley his campaign centered on reducing taxes and spending and he won. Shortly after taking office in 2011, walker introduced a right to work bill for which he is infamous. He wanted to significantly reduce collective bargaining for the state employees, a move many feel crippled yun ons. The bill was passed and struck down by a judge. It was ultimately held up by the wisconsin supreme court. The measure was so divisive residents collected enough signatures for a recall. With hopes of removing Sebastian Walker from office. In 2012, walker won the election becoming the first governor history to survive a recall. Ill call into law something that makes wisconsin the 25th state in the nation saying you have the freedom to work anywhere you want. The win heightened walkers profile in the party. President obama is taking notice. Recently the president was in walkers home state to discuss workers rights and overtime pay. America has done better economically when we are all in it took. When everyone has a fair shot. Polls show walker is near the top of the g. O. P. Field, polling up there with jed bush and while jed bush is a friend walker insists the country is ready for an unknown. I have a hard time from what i hear of voters, thinking we can compete against Hillary Clinton, a name from the past with another game from the past. I think people want someone new, not just republicans, but voters, particularly independent voters. Randall pinkston, al jazeera with the end of the obama era coming some republicans are looking at 2016 as an opportunity to court black voters. Gerald ford with the last republican nominee to claim 15 of the black vote. John mccain grabbed 4 . Mitt romney 6 in 2012. Earlier this month republican president ial candidate rick perry took aim at the g. O. P. s southern strategy. For too long we republicans have been content to lose the black vote. Because we found we didnt need it to win when we gave up trying to win the support of afghan americans, we lost our moral legitimacy. As the party of lincoln. Abs the party of equal opportunity for all. Jam eel smith is a Senior Editor at the new republic and joins us in the studio. What does the Republican Party need to do to win the black vote. They should start with realising that they didnt give up trying to win the black vote they demonized and scapegoated a population of voters who they saw as irrelevant or unnecessary. So what they have to realise is that black voters in 2012 showed up at the polls percentage weez more than white voters did, and granted that was because there was a black president on the ballot. But that just means that there is a population of people here in america, that doesnt want to be ignored any more, and they dont want symbolism or appearances. They have to win with policy not just presence. Interesting you talk about symbolism, we have been looking at the symbolism of the confederate battle flag coming from the state carolina capital. Now we here buzz about South Carolinas governor, nicky hayley being on the short list here. What do you think about her as a president ial candidate to garner the black vote. You might hope that she eliminated a shortterm problem for republicans. She kept them from going on the trail, and talking about this. To you know, she did her party a Wonderful Service in that regard. That said South Carolina is not key for republicans to win the election. Them carrying South Carolina is pretty much guaranteed that i dont see her as being an asset for one of these campaigns. Granted, you know the more the merrier, im for more women candidates, but i dont want i dont think she presentation new ideas, besides symbolism of taking down the Confederate Flag. You talked about policy legislation, action over rhetoric and how much more important that is. Right. You have scott walker. He is he makes comments about wanting to see a new face in the race. Its not about seeing a new face but policies policies that work. I dont think that black voters in particular have been too keen on supporting a guy that dedicated his governorship to eliminating unions and attacking workers. I think that you have a problem there when it comes to showing up and being new. That is all well and good. You have to have policies hope and change will not do it on republican or the democratic side. When you look at this field, why dont you play, you know as political consultant here for the folks. All right. What would you say to them about what they need to do for their campaigns, do they need to come out and say here is my policy on this to court the African American vote. I think the republicans have a little longer road to hoe in that record. Specifically they need to start with acknowledging not just that the southern strategy was wrong, but if they, themself have ignored the black vote and understanding how that is wrong, and what they are going to do to make sure not only that you stopped demonizing voters but you offer them policies that are going to be attractive to them. It happens in pretty much every demographic in the united states. Why not for black voters. Same with the democrats. Tomorrow Hillary Clinton has to add substantive policies with real impact in predominantly black neighbourhoods and districts. I think that she has a lot of winning over to do herself. She may be the first democratic nominee to win the black vote in the way that she has to win it. Interesting, Senior Editor at the republic. Get it done eurozone leaders are putting pressure on greeces Prime Minister to push through tough austerity. A live report from greece is next. Theres back and forth about new commitments in order to secure a bailout. What are you hearing. Its right. We have reached the stage where talks have gone on, they began with eurozone finance ministers. They carried on with talks saturday afternoon, they pour over a list of recommendations drawn up by eurozone finance minister obligations, requirements that would need to be adopted by greece. If it really has any hope of being able to secure a 59 billion bailout to keep the country afloat for the next few years and avoid the country sliding into bankruptcy. Among the requirements put forward, the request to streamline v. A. T, to reform labour and trade sec stores and privateies the countries and energy grid that could have an effect on the nation. The greeks, a short time ago made clear that they object to a number of these proposals, and calm up with suggestions. They want the European Central banks to keep the greek banks afloat. Banks are set to open on monday as are markets and greek citizens over the last week have been queueing outside atms. The amount of money theyve been able to withdraw has been limited. Pt greeks want a debt restructuring package to allow it to better handle the 356 billion that it owes a figure that is 180 of g. D. P. But also wants off the table a move that will see greece handing over 55 billion worth of assets to external third parties. When i say assets the port of parayas or a regional airport. Also, crucially, all of this the greeks are expected to ratify the Greek Parliament within 72 hours, and its allies, like france and italy believe it is completely unrealistic. All right neave barker live from brussels for us. Thank you. Pope francis concluded his latin american tour in paraguay a country overwhelmingly catholic. The pontiff visited the slums before holding mass and called on people to show austerity with the poor. Lucia newman has more on the festivities much reporter this was by far the largest mass of all the ones that pope francis has given throughout his three nations south american tour, here in paraguay, the worlds most catholic country, where 90 say they are roman catholics. They say they came spent the night angle deep in the ankle deep in the mud to get the blessing of the pope. Many told me what they wanted was for the pope to speak to their leaders, to open up their hearts to the poor and do the dispossessed. That very much in line with the popes social gospel. People are applauding a progressive message, particularly in paraguay which has a conservative Catholic Church hierarchy. The pope said that it was the gangrene much society, corruption. Thats a message that the people hope that their leaders will hear. The question is how much of this message will really really have an impact or how much of an impact will it have once the pope has left. Next, how the sequel to to kill a mockingbird plays into the National Conversation about race. Anticipation in the literary world with the release of harper lees sequel to the american classic of to kill a mockingbird. Millions of copies have been printed and will be released on tuesday. A twist involves one of americas favourite characters Atticus Finch. We have more. Movie reel the defendant is not guilty. Reporter americans are used to seeing atcues finch as a hero fighting against racism defending a black man accused of rape. Harper lees novel shows finch in a different light. Set in the 50, it describes how his daughter returns home grappling with her fathers view. One encounter says this reviews describe him as a racist who attended a k. K. K. Meeting. The character in the new novel may be a shock to fans bud readers say it could be a realistic portrayal. I dont see anything wrong with making a character more human, no one it perfect. If the character did have some leanings towards the other side, if you will. I would argue that we have seen an evolution. Maybe it shows that she is not here. Harper collins, a book publisher issued a statement about the new portrayal of atcues mimp. The question is an form and critical element in the novel, and should be considered in the context of broader themes. Even though ghost setter watchman is published now, its written before to kill a mockingbird, but it set 20 years later go, setter watchman, comes at a time when racial debates are continuing, from the Confederate Flag to protests over the killing of africanamericans. We have to find positive ways to address these differences or live with each other. Its a social problem, a family problem, and it is a political problem. Its an extremely contemporary problem. When asked to comment about the books release, harper lee said i am humble and amazed that this will be published after all these years. Joining us now is Maureen Corrigan a book critic for n p. R. s fresh air. And has read this new book. Thank you for joining us. All right. So we have this unexpected shift in this literary hero of to kill a mockingbird, seems hes changed his mind about segregation. What do you make about this new innings. Its a little perplexing. Its not that he was an advocate for states rights. You almost expect that. He would have his back up about the federal government coming in and telling white southerners how to live. Its that atticus spouts a lot of theories that sound straight out of a you genic textbook. In fact, scout discovers that hes been reading a book called the black plague, and she accuses him of being no better than hitler. Its the extremity of his views about race that are really disturbing in this book. So this is a grave departure from the atticus that many were inspired when we read the book. Do you thick teachers will ignore the sequel. How will they reconcile the change in go, setter watchman. I dont think teachers can ignore the se yell. Thats what we call it. It was written before to kill a mockingbird. Its described as a first draft, even though its set later. Teachers will have to use go setter watchman to talk about the responses, brown versus the board of education is in the novel, the current time of the novel is some time after 1954. We think it can be useful in terms of discussions about how people who are good can have very distorted, bad ideas about race. Its not anywhere near the masterpiece this to kill a mockingbird is. Its a messy novel. In terms of literary value, its a hard novel to teach. Its not that well written. I think in terms of the vision of race and arguments about race, that it gives us in america, in the 1950s, its a useful novel. Just there you have given us a little critique. Expand on that. You read the book. What do you think . I think that its all over the place. I think that theres a lot of telling in this book rather than showing and dramatisation. I think that it reads like a messy draft of something. I mean again, the official word is that this was a first draft of to kill a mockingbird. But it reads much more like a failed sequel to to kill a mockingbird. The thing that is most interesting to me about this book in the addition to atticuss changes is the way it gives scout, a 26yearold woman, struggling for a place in the world. The second Womens Movement has not happened. Here is scout. Very much a tom boy, not conforming to the gender norms of her time to the expectations of how a woman should behave and she is lost in this world of mid 1950s. Given all that has happened in the past year of race how do you think the new revelation could play into the conversation of race this americas . Well, for one thing it shows that atcues firm, as you say, a most beloved hero in American Literary history, who seemed certainly in the first book to be a progressive a man ahead of his time it shows him in this book as being a man of his time, and, in fact on the wrong side of history. But he is very much arguing for states rights. Thats certainly an art that we have heard much of in recent weeks, especially in terms of the Confederate Flag in South Carolina. He is very much against any sort of federal government interference, and theres a lot of people in America Today who share his views. All right. Maureen thank you so much. Thank you when Al Jazeera America returns, the next generation of genetically modified foods. Why some Scientists Say critics should give them a chance.
