South carolina saying yes to taking down the con fed rate flag. But some lawmakers want it to stay up, the uncertain future for a banner many say is a symbol of racism. U. S. Military leaders defend the white house strategy for battling isil insisting it will work, even if it does take time. After years of denial, Court Documents show bill cosby admitted to buying drugs to use on young women. How thats oosting the case of his accusers. This is al jazeera america, live from new york city. South Carolina Senate just voted overwhelmingly to remove the Confederate Flag from the state capitol. He was killed last month inside his charleston church, along with eight others. Those murders inspired the push to take down the flag, and his wife was there. We wanted to show her her gratitude that we can see as a matter of fact, that his grays is contagious. Contagious throughout this state. And what we have done, is we have spoken, with one voice and unity. And we are not being devisive. Now the bill goes to the house. Dianne has more on what needs to happen before it becomes law. The House Democrats just had a prez conference, asking members to follow the lead of the senate and pass this bill. There are amendments being proposed in the house bill, that is now flying over the monument, with other potential con fed rate banners. Possibly an infinity, so this bill could get tied up and we might not see something get passed this week as we were expecting. The flag was flown over the dome in 1962 to commemorate the civil war, and then in 2000 it was moved to the monument. Because it here in South Carolina. Now this morning senator lee right who is a republican in the senate, he was one of the people yesterday who streeted against taking it down, he has been saying he has been hearing from constituents saying they want the flag to remain up, so obviously this is a sensitive issue that has been brought to light more publicly, since the shootings a couple of weeks ago. Obviously, the flag has opened off dialog about race here in South Carolina. And we have heard about some of these protesters and incidents erupting in other cities like ferguson and baltimore where race has become an issue and i think we are starting to see that now hereby in South Carolina as well. Diane in columbia, South Carolina. Leo woodbury is a pastor at the kingdom of 11 20 07. He has worked as part of the take down campaign since the 1980s, and spoke with al jazeera about the movement. Part of the guisiveness is trying to tie the flag to history. It isnt so much a history call symbol as it is an affront to new york the people of color who have been battling to have this symbol removed. He called to be more vocal in calling for the flag to be removed from the state capitol. Defense secretary ash carter is on capitol hill today depending the Obama Administration strategy against isil. Carter and joint chief chairman are testifying before a senate committee. Carter is insisting that the president s policy is the right one and that isil will be defeated. Jaime you have been watching this, what is that are saying . Well, b. C. , its been a tough sell for defense secretary, and the joint chiefs chairman, as they are counseling patients to a decidedly impatient congress. Who was not seeing any signs of significant progress in the u. S. Led fight against isil. And that the u. S. Combat forces is a substitution for those forces would not produce enduring results. Thats a major point of contention. One of the senators went back and forth with the joint chief, over why he is not remember mending at least putting a small number of special forces in with those units to make them more effective, here is a little bit of the exchange from earlier this morning. So if we had a few aid views sos in the iraqi battalions, you are saying that would not make a positive impact on them and their capabilities . To win . What i am saying is that for a brief temporal tactical gain, we should wait until we see a strategic opportunity to do that i would think if we started having wins we would have better morale with the iraqis and they would fight better. He said all along that he thinks defeating isil and liberating in his words iraq, is something that will take three years and we are only eight months into it. After 7,000 volunteers are in the pipeline, the secretary thats because of a number of factors including the very rigorous vetting process that is required to make sure that the fighters that the u. S. Are doing to fight under the laws of conflict, and are going to fight isil not necessarily the regime of bashar al asaad. All right, thank you. Negotiators will keep working for a few more kays to try and reach an agreement on Irans Nuclear program the selfimposed deadline was supposed to be today. Ali velshi has reaction from teheran. Iranians are maintaining both at an official level and those people i am speaking to, that these deadlines are not their deadlines. That they want the best deal that they can get, and the best deal they can get includes the removal of sanctions. Now, we talked very generally about sanctions but there are very very different regimes of sanctions that have been imposed over time. There are United Nations sanctions trade sanctions and economic sanctions. There are particular United Nations sanctions having to do with nonnuclear weapons. Conventional weapons if you will, and there are the u. S. Sanctions including the swift banking sect sections, now swift stands for the society for worldwide interbank financial transactions. It is a society of about 9,000 banks and almost every country in the world which allows for inner country commerce through the trade through the exchange of money, through the system. Iran was removed from the system in 2012, and that is really those are the sanctions that really hurt them, because iranian banks and businesses and iranian people cannot move money electronically around the world, they cant send wires and that means while there arent sanctions on a lot of goods and services, people cant sell them to iran, because they cant get paid. One of the things is the removal of United Nations sanctions on conventional. For a long time they have been able to export. Let alone nuclear weapons. And this is something that iran wants removed. Apparently the chinese are in that part of the negotiation alone. The warners at the negotiating table seem farless interesting and it does appear that u. S. Congress, the Republican Controlled Congress may not approve a deal that has that kind of a provision in it. So thats where we are this may be a good signal, but other larger issues have been resolved and they are moving on to issues that are further down the list, or it may mean that once again a deadline will be missed. It appears greece will be making a bail out proposal tomorrow to european leaders prime minister, just arrived in brussells for emergency meetings on the debt crisis. Cypress had a conversation today with the president obama on his plans he must convince the 18 euro zone leaders to reopen negotiations as soon as possible. Before banks in agrees run out of cash, jackie, greece was expected to present new proposals to euro zone leaders today, why the delay . I guess thats the question, that they are asking themselves as well, after all they have been stressing to agrees the urgency of this. The german chancellor said that we are talking about days not weeks here, when can only assume that they havent had time to come up with a new proposal here. And then digesting the results of the referendum on sunday, but certainly this is very urgent, and we understand that it may be the proposals will come on henn. With so mush pressure on greece, duh it p it the country in a more vulnerable position. The long tore wait, the more difficult it becomes for them because there is another repayment looming. They already missed a payment of about 1. 8 billion. To the International Monetary fun, about a week ago in about two weeks time, they have to make payment, a repayment, to the European Center bank of 3. 8 billion, time is ticking away, and the longer they delay the less Time Available to try to get some finance together for them to make that payment. Obviously the more payments they mis the weaker the whole country will become. You mentioned the government time is running out, and a lot of greeks are running out of patience. Any idea how they propose eliminating the massive debt . Eliminating the debt seems to be a recent fantasy. The degrees government, what they would really like is some kind of write up or debt forgiveness. Thats what has been in the euro zone circles. Other indebted other struggling European Countries will start asking to have their debt written off as well. Certainly there are those that at least a partial debt write off should no longer be a sore subject because this is huge debt the longer it exists the more Interest Payments added to that are looking at unsustainable situation here. Thank you jackie, in brussells. A huge crowd braved win and rain to hear pope francis say mass today. Because he has been trying to hide this truth, from the public for many years. So we are gratified that the truth is out. I took a couple of sips of the cappuccino, and from the first sip, and then the second sip, i knew i had been drugged. Cosby has never been charged with rape or sexual abuse. With some going back four decades the statutes of limitations put many of the incidents beyond the reach of the courts but Gloria Allred hopes to use cosbys newly revealed at mission in other cases doing forward. We can ask him about his admission. Now, if you are wondering why it took ten years for this testimony to come out the lawyers have long objected to its release saying it would emparis their client. California historic drought that story next. Thats much worse than last year, farmers are suffering and it is trickling down. The wood family has farmed this land for four generations first growing cotton, these days garlic, alfalfa and almonds on 1900 acres. I am tired and you wonder how long you can continue to expend that kind of energy and not get what you considered to be an appropriate return. For farms across the state, the fourth year of drought has become a make or break year. California produces half the countrys fruits and vegetables. One reports estimates that more than half a million acres will be left unplanted up 25 from last year. Resulting in the loss of 18,000 jobs and 2. 7 billion u. S. Dollars for the state. This time last year, unemployment hit 40 in already depressed town, devastated by the droughts impact. We spoke to one out of workman that didnt wish to be identified yes, there are a lot of people, one week they go to work, and the next they dont, it isnt the same as. Yeah, it is, it is one of out of five people, but crow have to realize in almost every small city and town in this country that is isolated from a major urban center, they are never doing to have unemployment of 5. 5 . This whole area, depends pretty much on agriculture about 90 i think. Theres no ago, theres no life here, pretty much. I have seen people that i used to see get up every day for work, in food lines. Part of the relief includes more food assistance. Now it happens almost every week. So here is what is really interesting about what is being handed out here, you have tomato sauce drone beans these are things that are drown in california and you have farm worker whose pick them fresh but now unemployed farm hands are in line because they need food and they are getting this canned. Rosa picked cantaloupes for decades until the worst drought in a century took away the only thing she knows how to do. No water no job no job, no food. No water no money.
