This is rose, war on gauze, is causing devastating human suffering and infrastructure damage as well as environmental catastrophe. But beyond the current area, when ground defensive activists are determined to incorporate decades of these really occupational policy and land in the global climate, justice conversation on these boards. And this is the stream. So what does the genocide and palestine have to do with Climate Justice . Well, everything since the beginning of this war, theres really military has submitted 1920000 tons of c o 2. Thats equivalent to a commercial airline sign back and forth between new york and london over 3000000 times. And the job was the Climate Justice movements, we have to listen to the voice as opposed to being oppressed. And those were 5. The supposed to people say in this is 281000 metric tons of carbon dioxide. That is how much the 1st 2 months of israels war on guns that have generated according to a study published by u. K. And us researchers who also point out that that is more than the annual Carbon Footprint of 20 of the worlds most climate vulnerable nations. How do you bring about a conversation about the environment in the midst of a brutal, more ass cold, more than 26000 people on that as well . Our guests today are here to help us answer. Ragna herrera is a palestinian environmental list and human rights defender, founder of the young error of feminist coalition. Mikaela loach is an offer and climb of justice activist. Im sending him on the co founder of slow Factory Foundation and organization working at the interest action of human rights and environmental justice. Thank you all so much for joining us here on the screen for this very important conversation run. Yeah, and when we talk about garza, were talking about this brutal more. Why in your opinion is still important to talk about Climate Justice in the midst of this war. I think the environmental vendors, we must center human life and the warm are up to see. We cannot be claiming to advocate for land to reject them when we have a business to get an into salon. And we just as fix that genocide is all going to be honest. Not only does the, all of us humans to defend human rights defenders and to defend the mental defenders and kind of the time and for those who feel kind of to humanize us in here. And i want them to know that the occupation that the use of chemical weapons and not only is increasing the level of c o 2 is increasing deforestation. People dont have access to water and why that is accessible is the live and cause with the like a telling the syrians and i think its Something Else thats not a lot of people cover is income to be all conditions on people reside and was bank absolute the farmers, we are so sorry to interrupt you right now, we will absolutely get to that point. I just want to start with this particular war. And the impact is having celine. I just wanted your thoughts here cuz i saw you know and your last, how do we bring climb and justice into a conversation about gaza . The Climate Justice movement is looking at guys as a case studies not only for whats happening in terms of climate, but also as you mentioned in human rights. We see that that is done is one of the most egregious example of abuses of human rights and environmental injustices perpetrated by the most powerful Global Forces of militarized nation and wars for resources and extraction and palestine and gaza. Specifically as an issue is one of the most of it contested issue. Its a litmus test if you can, when the clement Justice Movement into Human Rights Movement at bell is done is holding as a case study as a sort of the, a compounding issues that were looking at. Where as you mentioned, the water where were talking about food, were talking about access to hygiene and simple hygiene. The rise of of diseases is also part of climate injustice stuck on we are experiencing mikaela various climate groups have lost in solidarity with palestine. And especially in this context of the war in gauze a can you give us your take here . I think its in this in high school to see people find me making the connections between lots of different struggles that exist in a while. And i think its important that we understand the current process or raise from the ideologies of dehumanization and hierarchy. Im at dispossession of land in particular like from things as an in the past and especially cleaners when the present dies. How the current process kind of raises this idea that you know, some people, some of those lives in the bibles and others, that was only, it was asking me protected more than others and the campus. So and that connect the production of money to vice will not people is more important in the lives of the majority at thats the kind of source of this kind of crisis. Thats what we say, the sources of, of money. What was that existing at the moment in particular this and whats happening in concert . And im, and im, so i think its been really helpful to see how the Current Movement no, as a whole, it doesnt mean that the company will continue to. But how little groups have realized that none of us are free and to all of us to free and the actually through kind of just as we have an opportunity to actually create a better liberated and transformed world. But for us to do that, we cannot decide to make any one disposable to leave anyone behind. Instead we have to actually fight and not to start with as well. And that can really like to slow down to you, which means realizing that we have to fight with us the things that being pressed wherever they are in the world. And one of our friends here at the stream climate activist and to show robbie had this to say about the connection between the 2. I think its important to measure the impact of war on climate, but i dont think it should be used as a tool to convince climate activists to care about genocide colonize. They shouldnt ethnic cleansing if youre not fighting for liberation from these. Youre not fighting for climb injustice. One of that is precisely what you were saying, right. This is a crisis that started so much before much earlier than october 7th the it started many would say 75 years ago. Oh yeah, absolutely. Um, i just believe that its very sad to see that we have to show to people that the land is getting this drawing instead of centering that people on this matter dying people understand are getting killed, i think is very important for us as environmental this. But also as humans of knowledge, the family that we shouldnt center kind of to means we should sensor human life in our lives. And again, were talking about an occupation has literally changed the landscape of this region. Take a look is yours. I asked frontier your chances are you 1st need the guest at your bar bottom at spider at your wedding, saying that a tree was planted in your name in the state of israel. And of course, these trees arent randomly planted there strategically planted, to literally bury any trace of palestinian heritage. One of the finest missions is to create the illusion that jews have unequivocal right to the land. So theyve spent the past 75 years systematically erasing every trace of palestinian existence. They renamed posting in towns and roads to give them huber names. They began bulldozing palestinian homes to build the jewish settlements, and they begin planting trees. Mikaela the jewish natural, fond how splintered over 240000000 trees across the region there in your work you have recent and touched on things of equal fascism, a green washing and white to environmental. Busy and can you briefly tell us how this relates to is really occupation . Yes, its not just to be kind of treat prompting programs that the space even from that on happen is not just that i happen in palestine is also on the continent. And in can you, for example, additional communities with the space from that line to offset the emissions . This will be recorded Copper Canyon as a little comment cleaners. Im in the sense that to kind of green wash and in a sense, if it stays real solid, isnt this idea of oh, were doing it for the comment were doing it said restaurants on it through treat to treat hunting programs or other things and its, its idb device numbers, basically mine wants to kind of see an apartment of them together and it says the oh were doing these things, restricting peoples liberty restricting peoples freedoms way, causing home to in particular business communities based on the use of upon us for a good reason. And its a way that very oppressive regimes able to kind of make themselves access to the rest of the world. I think its certainly we, we need to really very aware of because just because someone says they care about the process does not mean that they care about. Human rights does not mean that they care about the ration for people. And its really important that we are able to design the difference between greenwashing, but youre basically just trying to make this thing about the green and kind of justice, which is putting the, the ration of asking about that space for all of us. And everyone gets Different Agency and it is a 2 very different things. I mean, each does design not reached out to clear out what is happening and, and one. Yeah. When we talked about this and you actually mentioned, you believe district have been taken into consideration by the i c j and in the case of general side brought by south africa. Yeah. So i know the, in your opinion is kind of in criminalize as a good time, a friends where the environment actually, i know theres a lot of collaborative that are working to criminalize ingleside. But i think this was the perfect opportunity to bring them by mental space and environmental aspect to the occupation because theyre not only genocide and people, but also mentioned that im possible for the next generation to them. And theyre making it impossible for us to be inherent as opposed to the life to be, to, to be in there. So i actually think its very important that i want to listen to something done to come to life for problems that is working on right now. Is do were going to use stopping equal side and post on contain im trying to do something comfortable for their minds to against not only lives but also demand salinas. You know, do you agree . Absolutely. I think that green colonialism is extremely dangerous, not only because it is stealing land in order to plan for entry is like what were seeing here. And is that you and in a can 5 palestine. But its also dangerous because it is one of the main causes for forest fires because of these mono crafts. The environment is not suited to sustain these mono crabs in the 1st place. So 1st and foremost, the green colonialism not only hurts the people, it also hurts the planet and it doesnt last, its not sustainable in and of itself. And then the question on climate seems so unimportant next to the human rights violations. And the sheer amount of men, women, children, and the elderly insured and killed for the climate issues here are central to free by the stand and the free palestinian movement. Not only because hes read has it gets that with the equivalent of 2 nuclear bombs. The size of hiroshima, which is twice the amount of us the amount of pounds of bums that it had dropped on hiroshima and 19459045. Sorry. But its also a war for resources that mean gas holds a lot of resources underneath that soil. Were talking about gas, talking about oil. And so this is not just hurting the region and hurting the livelihood of these people. Its also done for a climate and access the resource. So the resources that were in with, i mentioned were going to talk a little bit more about that. But were going to start with something very, very concrete for people who perhaps are unfamiliar with just how difficult it is to simply exist in that region if youre a policy. And israels occupation has a multitude of implications. Notably on how publishing is administered. There are resources have a look. It is, you know, that its a legal for palestinians to collect rainwater for domestic or agricultural reasons. Because the rain, water, and water thats literally falling from the sky is the property of is rarely authorities. Water that is falling in the sky onto their own land onto the pulse in insulin land, but was, theres 1st, its illegal for them to have run. Yeah, this is very concrete for people to understand. You cant even collect rain water. Yeah, no. I was thinking that this completely shows to us that its not, it is not only bombing and district. And like i said, but ill send you the invite surgeries at this moment. Normally, somebodys gotta be to collect all this from the, all these trees and something a lot of people in the west bank dont have to not be doing right now because the automation is very complicated to have access to permits, to access you on that in your honor and a lot of young men and women are stuff needed while they are trying to have access to their trees. And besides the trees, access to water is completely done to not allow agriculture. Workers to be able to sustain them so and protect their heritage. Hey mikaela, is that something your active is or aware and fighting for within these climate movements . So i think the kind of the kind of movement is made some changes in, in recent years and it continues to make changes. But i think the needs to be as understanding i think a lot of people, especially im, if im talking about the global, not even on the sound that they feel like the frontier gauge, this essentials to have that kind of crisis. But it feels like to let people does that essentially the fact that is coming in the future. I think that whats important is for the client weve been generally but will say it would have us to recognize that so many communities today on or facing a central address. And i think that and whats happening in gaza at the moment, and the genocide is showing that in there is an essential address peoples lives today to entire peoples. And that was that Central Trust in business communities across the well, the central tracks and not things that the future that things that the present is a Current Movement we call it comes together to start back central address today. How do we think that we can stop and essentially threaten in the future so far off . And so i think we need to recognize that not only do we need to come together, and so its actually today, but well say that theres so much that we can learn from people. So you have full and off. I think centrals rest today. And that to include that in our struggle and he makes it stronger and it doesnt make it. We go, what do i need to . And its just important that we do that very important point. Um, somebody mentioned the lucrative business is that can. Busy so be part of this we found while were doing a research for this show another clip from social media. Take a look, a tourism one set aside this way because of my teaching licenses to the worlds leading Gas Companies to explore the costs of the cost of cost. This includes a british multinational gas and we will file an a tell you energy, try it this way. The average human stuff that that piece of investments was said to transfer, as well as energy security, with the cost of living and provide energy to support the transition to clean up and renewable gases. Palestinians in casa, should have a say in what is happening to the natural resources, and they should be guaranteed safety. Instead, the communities of being destroyed and violated. And so as bad as i mean you were mentioning a little bit about that and your organization slow factory has been, are raising awareness about the inter connected nature of Climate Justice and other forms of oppression. Right . Oh, absolutely. I mean, connecting the dots is what . So factory does in between a different issues. For instance, what were seeing in atlanta with cops, city, the test of land, the disposition of indigenous land and atlanta to build an entire Police Academy in the middle of the 4 is the forest thing. And the time of the Climate Crisis is completely connected with what were seeing in palestine and has the, the deforestation of lands and the disposition of land and has the philistine is directly connected. Also, these Police Officers are trained and is that you the arch shipped from the us to east of that used to train in a military format. But i just want to also address that the Climate Justice movement has ignored palestine for years 4 years because im, it just, this movement has nothing to that, that a sitting and struggle has not included the arabs. Drugs has not even included our voices. I mean, so factory was one of the 1st in the end of the space to really break these boundaries into se palestinian a lives are part of the global Climate Crisis movement. Palestinian, the lives are important and that his son is a case that he left and on is also a case studies when it comes to looking at a compounding issues related to war related to colonialism. The green colonialism that were talking about waste colonialism, which we defend address, which is when a foreign country ship your waste into your country as your country is at war, which is something that follows thing is, is experiencing 11 on has experience. And so all of these issues are compounding, connecting the dots are and drawing the lines between the systems of oppression and exploitation, and being as visible and vocal as possible. That palestine is a human rights issue. Its an environmental issue. Its a feminist issue, its an invention as issue is really military for creating palestinians, the fish forbidding them to work on their lands to harvest their crops while bombing them, bombing the swell with phosphorus, gaz rendering the swell, please, and mean, all of these are violations of human rights abuse at a scale that is beyond comprehension. And im, i wanna bring back to the issue of this war and the military aspect that has been, i guess, dismissed by many among the climate move into, i mean, one Research Study found that militarys account for more, for almost 5. 5 percent on global greenhouse emissions annual the thats more than ive ation and shipping industry is combined. I mean, mikaela. Why do you think these Greenhouse Gas emissions that play such a significant role in the Climate Crisis are largely on accounted for, especially when we talk about these annual conference is organized by the well, i think now has to do with which countries in the audio physical system have distribution of power. How bigs the bike, disproportionate power . So for example, the United States has distribution and power and not by just the system and within the u. N. And essentially bodies that have these kind of conferences. And as they all the kind of biggest, pretty to, when it comes to war, theyre not going to want to include guys in a similar way of how to call them to the idea of the concept for and was popularized by b, p. A, you know, company and why would they want us to focus on our individual missions and not look at them . Is because we have every day, every day and target them in the same way. Oh its we dont include emissions from one to include emissions from entries into all kind of conferences and were gonna Start Talking about the dates, all the things, gonna blame it on all the issues and not actually ever address the real root cause. And thats why i think that a lot of these big nations have no interest in actually talking to the heart of christmas ornaments. Theyd have no interest in not reaching what pharmacy and kind of less than what they want to do is find a way to replicate the same wells that make it green. So green wash, thats part of the green wash. The same system is the crate to that. And i think that progressively, the people are realizing that is not possible. We cannot, i mean, we might set to for the same well, but green me, what is that to the more pressure you guys have to set a depression and we went to and that continued site as far as the cost is and we want more, we design more but the, the, the kind of the rolling cost is they will not answer. Thats why they werent includes met, shes measuring missions because then it kind of shows the, or maybe we should be doing this. The non, obviously thats the human inbox. But the kind of impact just makes the argument stronger. Run yeah. Do you agree and, and how do we go about changing that . Is this perhaps of the size of moment to try to put pressure on low leaders and say, hey we, we know whats going on. And we dont want to replicate this model as make it look just said, you know, a lot of countries, especially when one of the just let cause a lot of them trying to kind of rewards their policy. For example, for the last and damage. We have a country like the us, thats 700000000. 00, but a lot of the damage funds and for a lot of people are not familiar with the the, the way the us spends its money and minus and like a lot. But however, it uses bit spanish, 23000000. 00 over to 300. 00 on military spending. And i think its very important for us to boost for the modernization. Whether its a, as a truck for call land call conferences, or like Decision Making spaces. If im feeling this is something that a lot of these old ones because the more the benefit from the condenser piece and we say we know that the kind of just move in. But also, and i mean just as the around the world, countries are now ready to tackle the catastrophe use that generates a lot of lots for them. And i think is active as know. We have to push for the much. Are they going to be part of the comp which enough to be more every Decision Making space saline . Do you agree . Uh, we just have to keep pushing is that well activists can do the pushing of course, but also the funding the funding in many ways we, we have so much more power than we are given credit for. I mean, look at what happened right now with the boy cuts on, on these brands that have been, that have made the list of the blue cuts and section the b b s. Movement. These brands are being targeted and they are suffering financially. Now we, we can do this to a point, i mean, mobilizing educating what on one selves at being able to strike, being able to voice our, our concerns boldly on the internet in person with family members. Mean, all of these things are contributing and were not seeing them immediately, but we have made a big, big, big progress even in the past to 100 days. Were proud of this. That has become a central issue. This has never happened before. I mean, palestine is the live miss death of every single movement, the Climate Justice movement of Human Rights Movement, as i mentioned before. So now were talking about by the sun on television thing, 3 pallets, then were in t shirts, theyre talking about it. And also educating one another is also part of it. We must be in bold, then we must not be scared to talk about by this time and fear for our jobs, fear for our safety, because of a big lobby against these human rights values. And furthermore, i want to say that not only do funding, but also mobilizing with our communities, being able to create alternative systems of care, alternative systems of care that are holding us at this time, mutual aid, you know, being able to support one another at transforming this colonial system of segregation and separation and rebuilding our indigenous communities, our local communities, reconnecting with our roots, are also part of the ways and were breaking this harmful system. And that is precisely why we wanted to have you guys here today for this very important conversation. And very important suggestions in terms of how we can move forward from here.
