since peaceful protests turned into a war. and in sport in some on stage on trying to win the italian league title for the 1st time in more than a decade into extending their lead at the top of the table with a 21 when. we begin in london where thousands have been protesting over the policing of a vigil for a woman who was abducted and murdered sara ever odds body was found on wednesday a serving police officer has been charged for her killing on saturday hundreds of people joined a rally to demand action on violence against women there was a heavy police presence and officers handcuffed several women and then dragged them away while the commissioner of the metropolitan police said no one wanted saturday's vigil to end as it did but then defended her office's actions. the really big crowd. will suspensions. quite right as far as i can see. both this is not. always poses a considerable risk. position for most is the. joins me now from trying to square and london madame those are some pretty large crowds that you've been following that's about can you give us a sense of them message to the police and to the government. yeah well as you were saying though many many hundreds of people outside police headquarters and later a parliament square a mature fog a square down the road where some of the crowd still making themselves heard now the slogan is just now has been along the lines of what people with thinking about on saturday you had about vigil in cup and common they were saying sisters united will never be defeated who streets our streets reminding people of the dangers that women across the u.k. face just going about their daily lives and the numbers of women that are killed and attacked by men every year but earlier on a police headquarters they were denouncing what they saw as police brutality heavy handed tactics when they moved in on saturday to forcefully remove women protesters from the area where there were tributes to sara ever raj and you saw those videos and pictures of male officers dragging women away that has caused outrage not just among the people who have taken to the streets but among a lot of people around the country the police say that they didn't want to be in a position to have to enforce regulations that stick of it 19 regulations which to bind gatherings of more than. the people that originally when we were down there on saturday they were keeping their distance very low profile didn't end up like got to chill and a lot of people are wondering exactly why it had to be like that the organizers to try to reach a compromise with the police to make it fully happen if the when that didn't come through they actually canceled the event now they said that what we saw on saturday night was extremely emotionally triggering for people already upset with the fact that a police officer has been charged with sarah everett's kidnap and murder of course on a day minors as there is a met police presence around where you are right now and to fog a square and we just heard kristie the deck there defending her offices despite the widespread criticism so how is the government responding to all of this. well you've got the government in fact in tandem with some opposition politicians right now leaning on cressida dick despite what she said about why the action was necessary. she was suggesting that the atmosphere changed when it wasn't clear that there was any immediate threats of violence so should distancing wasn't strictly possible but whatever the case she's under pressure now because the mayor of london city can has heard from her and he said he's not satisfied with the answers she's given similarly pretty patel has talked to her and a home office spokesperson says that there are still on says to be forthcoming they are not satisfied either now they're not talking about cressida dick resigning which is something that the leader of the liberal democrat party here has called for and many activists are calling for but clearly in the the next few hours there are so many more questions on the police a poll are going to have to answer not just to the home office but to the british not to to the politicians but to the british public to reassure them that a their right to protest will be upheld but be that they're taking their concerns seriously in terms of what they're doing to make paly women feel safe in general there's a new policing bill coming in in the next couple of days the labor opposition now will vote against it saying it goes too far in for it in cringing people's civil liberties i think there is a mood now over that the police really has got it wrong in terms of its imaging its messaging but we're probably you know seriousness given them a government majority in parliament they will get that bill through people here are very unhappy at the prospect of that on the ground for us keeping an eye on that protest in london thanks so much. on moving on now and ireland is now the most us nation to suspend the use of the astra zeneca. 19 vaccine due to concerns about blood clotting a government advisory committee says it's a precaution and stressed that there was no conclusive link between the vaccine and blood clots and referred to reports from norway of 4 serious cases journal reports . arlen's decision to call a temporary halt to the use of the oxford astra zeneca vaccine could have far reaching consequences the country's immunization orthe already pointed to a safety alert raised this week by the norwegian medicines agency after 4 health care workers suffered serious blood clotting events within 14 days of receiving the astra zeneca jab denmark and iceland have raised similar concerns with the ripple effect extending to bulger area and as far afield as thailand the irish move was described as precautionary we will continue to monitor the situation and if we can be satisfied that these events are coincidental and not caused by this vaccine we will reassess the situation the u.k. based astra zeneca has defended its vaccine saying that safety data collected with 17000000 doses administered so far shows no evidence of increased risk of parliamentary embolisms or thrombosis pending further investigation the european medicines agency says the benefits of the vaccine outweigh the risks and the world health organization says it's rollout should continue it really doesn't mean that it is potentially unsafe it is been tested widely there have been no reported problems beyond what you would normally expect with a vaccine with any you at sea and really the occurrence of these rocks against the globe. is no greater in the vaccinated population ron it is in the unvaccinated. so why why regulators in these countries are taking no chances and beyond being extremely cautious. is not really clear inevitably now concerns will linger the oxford astra zeneca vaccine has been beset by problems including political disputes and delivery delays now add safety concerns it's important to note that no one is alleging aid. conclusive link between the vaccine and these blood clotting events but the longer the doubt is allowed to persist the worst defect will trust therefore the overall vaccine rolled out. well let's now turn to where the death toll continues to rise after yet another day of nationwide protests the military has now imposed martial law in 2 areas in myanmar's largest city yangon at least 30 people have been killed in demonstrations across the country on sunday and state television also says that a police officer lost his life and 2 others were injured and that's in central me a law now on the diplomatic front china's embassy in myanmar has called on security forces to protect its citizens after 2 chinese are in factories were attacked this all comes after the acting leader of myanmar's ousted civilian government called on his supporters to stay on the streets man when king tan also urged the many border ethnic groups to unite against the janitor tony reports. defiant protesters again marched through the streets of mandalay on sunday in strong voice and in large numbers they were clearly on by the violence of the day before that's when the security services shot dead at least 6 people in a crackdown in the 2nd city and injured many more but with the death toll rising a call for revolution from the former vice president now leading a civilian administration in hiding. and this is the darkest moment of the nation and the moment when the dawn is close this is the time for us citizens to test their resistance against the dark moments speaking of a new 3rd democracy the message was clearly aimed at bringing diverse ethnic groups together to overcome the army and to. win forming a resistance unity plays a vital role despite a. differences in the past this is the time we must grip our hands together to end the dictatorship for good. in these diverse ethnic groups as scattered across myanmar's borderlands divided they don't represent a significant threat to the military who've been fighting them for decades united they could be a considerable obstacle. but there's long been distrust between these groups and the n l d the national league for democracy bringing them together would be no small task in peaceful defiance protesters break the curfew to honor the dead in candlelit vigil is across the country you never know they look at me and we come out on the street to show that the are against military dictatorship by breaking the kofi order imposed by day one top review continue fighting that is the military continues with its brutal tactics on the streets calls for a revolution that's not so peaceful may gain increasing support tony ching al jazeera well ali i spoke to run and a visiting scholar at the international state crime initiative that mary university of london he says a man known as ethnic groups could see this as an opportunity to potentially get rid of the military once and for. the military's often used divide and rule tactics that's that's been one of the one of the shrewder moves they they elevate one group at the same time as they're taking on another and we we've seen that in fact this week the military which had previously declared an armed group in rakhine state the ira konami as a terror group it's taken them off that list it's an attempt by the military to reach out but i think i think they've left it too late i think from the military's point of view they they have managed to unify virtually every group within the country against them from young people and we're seeing them in the street protests street protests in the urban centers the union movements united against the military obviously the established politicians in the national league for democracy but now we're seeing ethnic and religious minorities realizing that this is their chance they've achieved federalism on the political agenda in a way that they haven't been able to achieve for many many years and i don't think that they'll be minded to now jump back in bed we need a way with me and most military i mean the military just has nothing to offer them they see this is their opportunity to remove the military from politics permanently and to achieve the political demands that legitimate political demands around federalism that they've been making for many years so i think i think. the protest movement and the civil disobedience movement in myanmar really has everything to play for here. well that's plenty more ahead for you this news hour including dutch police move against anti lockdown protesters we'll have all the latest from the hague. syria's 1st lady is investigated in a case that could see has stripped of her british citizenship class and sport formula one has been remembering the life of legendary commentator murray walker and he will be here with that story. now police in the netherlands have used water cannons to disperse people protesting against coronavirus restrictions their thousands gathered for that rally and the hey have proved capacity for the protest was just 200 this all comes ahead of parliamentary elections this week has been. removed from the market is style has been compared with former u.s. president donald trump ignoring covert restrictions the leader of the anti immigration populist party. is trying to attract voters by calling covert 19 a common flu and blaming international conspiracies for being behind the pandemic. hundreds of people at the moment are in the hospital right suffering from corona many people in the netherlands have died more than 15000 so it's a serious issue that's a normal number for a series flu we've had for thousands of years everyone else have complained to hospitals are full they can't cope with the workflow mere well those stories are highly disputed desperate to became the largest just 2 years ago but fell apart after racist anti-semitic messages will make now is stepping into a growing sentiment against a lockdown american style campaign based on conspiracy theories on the media. sentiment in the netherlands against lockdowns has grown especially after a nighttime curfew was introduced in january riots broke out in. several cities and covert testing facilities were attacked far right parties like form for democracy appeared to be benefitting from this anger economy i can go anywhere i want to and even if i didn't go out i should have freedom that has been taken away from us and that is horrible. i hate him i like what he says about freedom i want schools to reopen i'm a 1st year student and i can barely follow my studies because it's all online i was my. dad's party is polling around 3 percent of the vote another anti immigration party the freedom party of us is predicted to win around 20 percent and become the 2nd largest like it did 4 years ago the 1st time it's not about immigration or islam it's about corona yeah it is and i we take a responsible view it as well as a people because we're really in for. the public health as well and making that a big issue not a problem for you it's not about immigration it's well if you look at the polls it's not that i think are responsible for you that we will benefit from it but it's not it's not like you want to benefit from a pandemic i'm just doing my job his chances to become part of the government are slim since nobody wants to govern with him because of his views on immigration an islam converse and writer of a book about willis says that even though around one 5th of the dutch electorate voted for far right parties their influence remains limited in the netherlands are sometimes called as the middle finger fold people middle finger to the political establishment and want to shock the establishment and how can you shocked by choosing somebody who is always shocking. their politicians in the debates and that is what will this does the main question is how successful a complaint soley based on covert restrictions will be and many in the netherlands are fed up there's also a large group who do take the fight against the fire. seriously that france and. now a police investigation into the wife of syria's president is currently under way in britain a small assad is accused of inciting and encouraging terrorist acts during the war in syria the case was opened in response to a dossier filed by an international law firm and it could lead to have facing prosecution and the loss of her british citizenship toby cadman is a human rights lawyer and also the founder of that found that submitted evidence against us. she says that she has participated in crimes. our group has been working on this all for the last 67 months and said we submitted evidence that sharon's had an open and incitement i mean current commit. terrorism in syria. some of which is what we would call convention offenses and so these are vance's that involve the use of chemical weapons so what she is effectively incites in italy especially they're doing is having and sciences. have resulted in deaths in syria meeting with troops making public statements glorifying the conduct of the army that has resulted in us and her heart a 1000000 deaths and use of chemical or no forms of weapons and so you know it's not just that she is the life of the. president she has actively our allegations are she has actively campaigned actively participated kink in those crimes and says she must face justice for that it's once the investigation roots reach the status it is she is something fresh recruits obviously expects that great cooperation from the syrian regime of course requests can be made for exhibition request can be made through through the can next system well that's the end of remains is that she will be unable to in syria and she will effectively determine broadcast. we know that she is campaigning to assume this what leadership she sees a future i suppose it will be so it is not insignificant no because well what could result is the string of presidents or even though we are close we don't want that to happen we want to face trial. well it was 10 years ago on monday when protests began in syria that would descend into a civil war more than 13000000 people are either displaced within the country or a sheltering abroad many of them are in camps and lebanon's bekaa valley from ways anahata reports. in the midst of war a generation grew up in exile at least 1000000 children have been born since 2011 when syria's peaceful uprising began before it turned into a war home for many has been informal counts like this in neighboring countries in lebanon's bekaa valley life has been one of poverty and uncertainty that as of now there are around 200 children under the age of 10 in this camp where boys and girls whose lives have been destroyed out of their future is nothing more than 13000000 syrians that's half the pre-war population remain displaced inside and outside the country nearly 900000 are registered in lebanon the highest number in the world relative to its population and as the conflict enters its 2nd decade with no political settlement in sight there could be further displacement. which is actually. syria's economy is collapsing and international aid organizations are warning it is pushing millions deeper into poverty many are jobless and hungry the united nations says 60 percent or $12400000.00 syrians don't have regular access to enough food. but economic uncertainty is not the only challenge there are those who fear for their safety in the absence of a political settlement some are vulnerable where they are and need protection like resettling them in a safe country. about 570000 syrian refugees needed to resettle but there are other only 9300 refugees or this. country who is certain that this is a very low number considering that. despite the battlefield being largely quiet for a year aid agencies say the daily suffering of syrians is worse than it has been at nearly any point throughout the conflict and the hardship has not stopped at syria's borders very high up of. our life has been reduced to this in syria they waiting for a box of aid and here we are waiting for our box of aid we lost hope of going back . for those who have already lost so much it may be a long wait for political change in damascus or for humanitarian conditions to improve to allow them to return home. because of valley eastern lebanon that's. a trash she is a senior advocate for the middle east at refugees international she joins us now from washington d.c. somehow i see the u.n. refugee agency is actually calling this crisis the silent war that war poverty now credit 19 it really feels like a horror as you just keep on mounting. yes and so. i mean as the reports previously mentioned we're entering. the mark of the pentium 4 the conflict and despite the fact that you know all the conflict like the violence has waned dharm in many parts of the country now syrians are increasingly see you not the. economic and social i would say consequences are the completely in our you know of the different policies that have pushed the country even further into collapse sorry looking at the numbers so last year less than half a 1000000 people returned home but nearly 2000000 were nearly displaced so things are obviously getting worse but as you say other drivers then for people to flee syria they're changing. so there are many drivers. the situation change according to specific compared so last year for example there was a violent escalation in not what's you know that led to all additional placement. now what we're seeing is more and more of the economic collapse of the country the depreciation of this unit are and reveal on the daily struggle for families jaw gene or like children get access to basic services are becoming more the drivers then what used to be before mostly the violence sorry i want to talk about children in this crisis has brought into zone many people's minds with elana curdie and that heartbreaking image of him on that beach i realize something like half of those who are fed syria are children i mean that's a stunning proportion of the refugees who are kids why is that. yes i mean you know like syria or jordan in the past because witness one of the most ringback complex you know in the 20th 1st century. the best saw is estimated you know this by the lack of of like betty live a lumbers but the conservatives are conservative as them and stark about 100000 some even you know go as far as have to 1000000 people who have died in this conflict through out the country you're not everywhere almost inside syria like safety was a major concern safety from all the types of weapons that have been ones during this conference from barrel bombs to or even chemical weapons and other types of violence but also the access to services the access to latisha is in some cases the truly job family to look for better opportunities lack of education you know drop families to look for do not save may be a better life somewhere else for their children. or to have a trash there from refugees international are great to get your thoughts here on out there thanks for joining us. thank you paul. now returning to the corona virus pandemic and at this point we know just how vital the vaccines are for many countries it's the exit strategy from the pandemic but it is also big business billions of dollars have gone into making vaccines and trillions more stand to be made out of them how much exactly well no one really knows negotiations around contracts surrounding the vaccines have been extremely secretive some of the companies aren't making profits or at least keeping that margin to a minimum so both johnson and johnson and astra zeneca for instance have promised to sell their vaccines at a cost that will see them break even somewhere around $4.00 to $10.00 a dose but others a much higher up to $40.00 per job companies are facing the most criticism however for guarding just how to make the vaccines critics argue that the funding came from governments charities and outside investors so it's unfair for the big companies to hoard all those results of especially when lots of countries are still unable to get their hands on supply so what's the fix well some a lobbying the world trade organization to scrap patients until the end of this pandemic and that debate is still ongoing now and we can all speak to jonathan gruber he's the 4 professor of economics at the massachusetts institute of technology and he joins us now from massachusetts jonathan i want to start with that debate around patients there was that push led by south africa and india both countries with huge vaccine needs and don't have enough vaccines for themselves and then there was that pushback that we saw from the u.s. and u.k. so all rich countries putting themselves 1st at the expense of poor. they are and quite frankly i think that's probably the way it's natural to work i think that these companies even if they're selling close to cost aren't simply narcan innovate in the way they've innovated if patents aren't viable tools of protecting intellectual property so i think the right answer is what the u.s. has done with contractor about a 1000000000 doses now we only need about 500000000 for our country so we should be working to set up processes now to ship the rest the rest of the world it would be great if we could get the whole world vaccine at the same time we're not going to but the answer is not to violate patents which will get in the way a future innovations type the answer is to spend more money or even more vaccine from the companies are making them and shipping those the rest of the world and jonathan you alluded to something that speed so this is really a not just about supply but also how quickly things can get out to kenya for instance i say is saying it only expects to vaccinate something like 30 percent of its population by mid 2023 min minute 2023 that's more than 2 years from now and only a 3rd of the population is there a way then to make the economics work better and get jobs to countries that need them quicker. yeah there absolutely is and it's not complicated just the rich countries should pay for it so in some sense think of it this way think of 2 approaches one is you get rid of the patent and let the poor countries buy whatever would be a dollar dose or if you keep the patent promote innovation and have the rich countries actually spend money on foreign aid making sure that it doesn't take to 2023 to get these countries that it's just not that much money at $4.00 to $10.00 a dose to get people vaccinated i think we do so i do think we need to make sure though that if we're going to pay $40.00 we to make sure the vaccine is only better in the $4.00 to $10.00 ones and certainly we should be in the cheapest options that work to spread around the world so i want to get to the different types of x. ians in a moment but i'm curious what is your estimate then of just how much the vaccine market is worth taking all that into account of god out of the good estimate but it's you know it's it's obviously hundreds of billions but once again if you think about the scope of foreign aid in the form of a we given the 40 we should give this is really just an investment developing countries should be making the us the world so well coming back to that the different types of vaccines do you think the number of different vaccines available does that dilute the competition but does that then also potentially create inequality is where some people get better or more effective jobs than others. this is the number you have to remember the number 0 for every vaccine approved so far there has been 0 fatalities so we talk about 96 percent effectiveness versus 66 percent effectiveness and they are all miraculous and incredible and there is no example someone getting both those the vaccine and actually dying in israel of about 700000 people them vaccinated there's been 12 hospitals asians and no deaths so far all the back scenes are great and we should not place too much emphasis on which one we're getting they're all working really well. jonathan gruber there for a professor of economics at the massachusetts institute of technology really great to get your insights here professor thanks so much for joining us on out of there. my pleasure. still ahead here on out of their election season begins in germany and to regional votes on taking on an added significance plus. finding ways to perform we look at how some musicians in new york playing it safe during this pandemic. and the death of a legend in the boxing world has been paying tribute to one of the sport's all time great. how the weather is quieting down now i stay now for the middle east we saw some very strong winds through the course of the way can as this system made its way across but the skies coming back in behind not looking too bad unless you're in turkey we've got some rain sleet and snow coming in across the turkish mounties quite a brisk way into the eastern side of the mediterranean little dry some showers into lebanon as we go on through what shoes day still see some showers there continuing into parts of turkey but i think elsewhere we shouldn't be too bad little bit lifted dust and sand a possibility into the northeast of saudi arabia pushing up into work you wait for the south that is fine and sunny in that sunshine stretches across the good parts of somalia see want to see showers just drifting in here mind she chance of wanted to shout into central parts of ethiopia but for good part of east africa south uganda looking good kenya looking good good part of tanzania also fine and dry southern parts of town and they will see some showers those showers there extending across into northern areas of mozambique will in parts of madagascar saying some showers as well as showers structure right across the tropics up into the gulf of guinea now just somewhat to weather the for the cut southern capers we go on through monday it will not drive as well to further east which is because you choose day bright skies behind. and then i would put out more in my change is very much our culture has been very harmful to the economy and the lives of many people in the us on challenging traditional attitudes how narrowing the gender gap is helping women in whom the card was escape poverty the focus is that we're trying to break these barriers of machismo by giving women access to resources need into southern states have conservative c.d.u. looks set to post its worst ever results bringing in only around a quarter of the voters the greens and social democrats have polled well frustration has been growing in germany over the handling of the corona virus pandemic and a slow vaccine rollout of john mccain is across all of this for us from berlin dominic this is all really kick starting a huge election year in germany does this give us a sense of potentially what's to come. the election results on sunday in the 2 german states where voting was taking place biden virgin bag and farce spelled really bad news for the christian democrats although they were not the main party in government in either state they are ruing the effect of a scandal at the federal parliament level in which several of their parliamentarians have being fined found themselves in gulf than a financial scandal now that appears to have cost the party in the polls the point to make also is that with 6 months to the general election the christian democrats find themselves now shedding votes when they are searching for somebody who can lead them in those elections as a vote winner the flip side is that the 2 parties who emerged from sunday's elections reinvigorated the social democrats in the rhineland pilaster knights and the greens in barton vs where the 2 prime ministers had a very high personal following and it seems to have been borne out by the election results so the upshot here is the christian democrats facing a historic slump in their vote share and serious questions about who will lead them into september's general election when they know that their biggest political asset angle americal has ruled herself out so many questions for the christian democrats as a result of sunday's elections and as yet they don't appear to have an obvious answer to the most central question of all who will lead them into september's general election dominic cain across all of that for us from the land thanks so much to me . well just outside paris hundreds of people marched in memory of a 14 year old girl who drowned after being thrown into the river seign a 15 year old boy and girl are piece of the puzzle does need to be addressed. need a relationship with the cape. as well for years industries here have benefited from being a member state until now jane wallace is concerned about what's coming next i find it very concerning that the situation is that at the moment any fish or squid to react support to europe or attract a tariff of between 6 and 18 percent i mean to give you an idea in terms of the conservative view based on our recent financial performance that 6 percent represents 30 percent on average of our profits over the last 5 years so as you stream a disturbing the decision by the e.u.'s perceived as a victory for argentina which has been demanding before guns were moving a silence the south georgia and the south sandwich islands belongs to them. the thought printed dispute over the islands led to a war between britain and argentina in 1982 it lasted for 74 days and left almost 1000 that in spite of losing the war argentina continues to demand that the after 12 successful title defenses has run its champion ended in 1987 after a controversial loss against sugar i learned it's hard for boxing shortly afterwards well former world heavyweight champion lennox lewis has paid this tribute i'm simply stunned to hear the news of marvelous marvin hagler not only was he a living legend but i was proud to call him my friend he was so full of life energy and positivity you'd never guess what a wrecking machine he was in the ring earlier only spoke to the editor of boxing news matt christie he says hagglers fight with some of the hitman hearns in 1905 was arguably the defining moments of his career. i mean that fight even now will give you goose bumps if you're that way clyde if you want to see a ferocious it's insane i mean the way very often boxing on a level where you put the best against the best there will be a feeling out period where they kind of take sometimes work out what your fights might do with this one they just go at it gets caught early on and then it all bets are off arteries and just trying to destroy and that was he's he's motto was war you were in there for war but at the same time the hearns fight was standing he was a very controlled very disciplined boxer i think he had a difficult beginning to this career and one could argue that by the time he got his world title shot in the 1980 it was too late but once he was at the top 21 in the world world middleweight title he was he was he was applauded he was well regarded but in some kind of context really when mike tyson came along and took the boxing world by storm the best fighter in the sport regarded throughout and he's the one and only modern is more of an actor he lived and breathed boxing everything about him inside the ring and out during his career was your class and i think if you want to you want to put a number on it is in the top 10 boxes of all time for me to want to spain remembering the life of legendary commentator murray walker
