In a position to govern from day one on january 20th 2021 additionally what i would say is that i think what youre going to see is while i think the reporting was right i dont think were going to see a President Trump tent down the anger of his supporters i think what you will see is that the government will do what it has done for decades which is ensure a peaceful transition whether donald trump is a vocal advocate for america we have reporters in many of the American Cities where there is crowds out celebrating joe bidens victory many of the people in those crowds accusing President Trump of being a racist of being a fascist the various words like that hes always been a key is that that of having effectively almost given the green light to go to certain language that wasnt then shouldnt be allowed how easy do you think it will be to put the genie back in the bottle when it comes to to that some some of the language that was suddenly made permissible. You know look i think its fair to say that americans are exhausted and i think its also fair to say the reason why we saw such a tremendous turnout and why we saw so many people overwhelmingly support president like fire was because they wanted Something Different he is not going to be on twitter and changing american policies at will right hes not going to stoke the divisions that i think weve seen from President Trump and i think Many Americans are going to welcome that i also recognize that theyre going to be folks on the trump side that are not going to be happy that he lost but at the same time i think were going to see him tonight when he gives his speech and as weve seen over the last few days does that hes going to really try to appeal to our better angels appeal to who we are as americans fundamentally in terms of how our democracy works and regardless of what President Trump will try to do whether its chaos or does that continue to some distant misinformation i think were going to see from a president let by with a very different direction and tone which i think somebody welcomed by the vast majority of americans on a final point what would you like to hear him say tonight. You know look i recognize im a democratic strategist but what i would really like to hear him say is that we are going to turn the page on the last 4 years you know we are going to not only change some of these assets policies whether its been related to Climate Change but i think also and were seeing this already with the start of the covert task force that will be a panel on monday by preselect by it is that were going to tackle this and were going to show not only americans who we are but were going to show the world who we are. Fundamentally we are americans whether you identify with the public and democrat black white you name it we are americans and i think thats the message that were likely to hear from him and thats the message i for one welcome well well know in a couple of hours when he is expected to speak in delaware for the moment democratic strategist there rick plummer thank you so much for having joined us thank you and you are now al jazeera as reynolds is in los angeles for us in california of course a very blue state he says president elect biden has a tough task ahead of him. Where having some problems eg getting that interview from rob reynolds in los angeles ok we can go to it now. Amidst all of the euphoria that the biden supporters are feeling right now you know its always a cliche to say. Now comes the hard part but boy is the hard part ever coming for joe biden and Campbell Harris they are facing a spreading and intensifying coronavirus pandemic which has really almost exceeded the ability of you know Contact Tracing and some other. Standard forms of pandemic containment at this stage in this country they have a. Economic recession severe economic recession that appears to be getting somewhat worse with the hiring slowing down and they face really a situation where joe biden has been elected but he has no coattails. The Democratic Party lost seats in the house they failed to win control of the Senate State House is the same situation republican domination so republicans will not feel under any pressure of some court sort of vast National Mandate to begin cooperating with a President Biden over the things that he wants to do. Ok woods shift the focus from National Reaction to interNational Reaction and World Leaders have been taking to twitter to congratulate president elect joe biden and Vice President elect camel heris 1st up was Justin Trudeau canadas Prime Minister who said he looks forward to working with the biden heris team then indian Prime Minister and there on their modi saying bidens contribution to strengthening in the u. S. Relations was invaluable he later added the congression congratulations specifically for kamelot harris saying her success is path breaking finally french president the man who in mccraw new said we have a lot to do to overcome todays challenges lets work together. Or has more now from paris. Over the past few years under donald trump the relationship between the u. S. And e. U. Has certainly deteriorated at least become more tense and thats certainly the case between france and the us emanuel micro congratulating joe biden camera harris saying that he looks forward to working with them on some of the most pressing pressing challenges ahead and i think about omicron will really look forward to meeting joe biden has not met him before but undoubtedly he will share our lot more with him politically than he did with donald trump or biden a democrat in mine or my craw a centrist and michael will hope the joe biden means that the u. S. Is going to really enter an era of approaching Foreign Policy with a multilateral vision which is the sort of vision that a man or macro has he was of course very upset to see the donald trump took more of a unilateral approach to Foreign Policy pulling the u. S. Out or for example the paris climate deal out of the iran deal the j. C. P. O. A medal michael will hope that biden will do things like sign the u. S. Back up to the paris climate deal we know the biden the said that something hed like to do that the you might be able to work more closely with the u. S. On iran that they will be more discussion of that just generally relations between the e. U. And us will be a lot more predictable so thats u. S. Relations what about the u. K. With the Prime Minister Boris Johnson was among some of the 1st leaders to send congratulations to the bride and harris team that imbiber is in london and says all eyes will be on what this means for the countrys special relationship over the next few months. This point says to one issue of contention brecks it and trade deals now the the president elect has been quite forthright in his worries about where britain is going just 2 months ago he said this we cant allow the good friday agreement that bore that brought peace to Northern Ireland to become a casualty of brics it what does that mean now well if britain doesnt get a trade deal with the European Union by the end of the year Boris Johnson is trying to get through this bill called the internal market bill which in the opinion of the European Union and in fact of joe biden threatens a hard border between Northern Ireland and oil and risking that peace under the good friday agreement joe biden is very unhappy about that prospect and if it came to pass that would make the likelihood of any swift trade deal between the u. K. And the United States a lot more remote than of course that is the bigger prize inter in the eyes of Boris Johnson and his own entourage so really this piles on the pressure if you like for Boris Johnson to hurry up and get a deal any kind of deal in the next month and a half well our diplomatic editor james bays is live for a said the United Nations james were just hearing there how the relation between the u. K. In the us very very close relationship is likely to change and how do you think in general the whole North Atlantic Alliance will change with the biden presidency. Well clearly there are some european leaders who look to hungary poland slovakia who rather liked President Trump they have governments that have a nationalistic viewpoint at the moment but with regard to most of the e. U. And nato members and other key allies of the us like new zealand and australia i think theres going to be a massive sign of relief and the reason for that let me just recount a conversation i had a couple of weeks ago with a senior european official this wasnt a Spokes Person its someone with a very serious job and this person said to me they believe the last 4 years of the trumpet ministration were the worst for the relations between europe and the us at any time since world war 2 they do not like the way that President Trump does business and they dont like the business that he does they dont like the sort of Foreign Policy the american 1st part Foreign Policy the lack they would say of u. S. Leadership on the world stage they dont like the unpredictability they dont like the policy by tweets and i think that although theyve all come out with very polite normal diplomatic messages today welcoming the election of joe biden but me through the scenes they are pretty elated i think many of these people that it could be back to business as it was before the trumpet ministration 4 years ago other people who may know President Trump are the leaders of saudi arabia for example or israel and then again theres countries like iran that you know trump backed out of the Iranian Nuclear deal much to their own happiness how do you think a new presidency might change those dynamics in the middle east there is it just too early to tell now. Oh i think there will be many governments that are trying to recalibrate very urgently and youre right you look at israel and Prime Minister netanyahu he could not have wanted for a president in the white house who was more favorable to his views than donald trump but of course he knows joe biden well and i think this is the fact with many of these governments particularly in the middle east where many of these governments have been in power for a long long time they know biden as well so hes a known quantity so i dont think necessarily theyll be huge worries there its interesting we havent had any reaction yet from either china or russia to hugely important countries in the world chuck china i think would potentially be looking for better relations with joe biden Going Forward and certainly joe biden is talking about dealing with china as a rival and potentially an adversary but also as a country that he can cooperate with on some issues and he wants to deal with the problem of china by working with his allies with regard to russia i suspect president putin is well aware hes going to have a tougher opponent who will actually say things to him because President Trump has never said anything remotely negative about president putin during his 4 years in office having said that in addition to the iran deal and the paris climate deal which most of the focus will be on in the early days of the biden presidency there is one bit of very urgent business that russia and the u. S. Need to do in the 1st 13 days of the biden presidency thats new start if you dont know what that is its the main major arms control treaty between the u. S. And russia that limits the amount of Nuclear Warheads its one of these things that we dont talk about very much but its very import. That treaty runs out on the 5th of february as i say just 13 days after the inauguration urgently needs renegotiation be a busy start for joe biden c youve spoken about how this will change the dynamics internationally but i guess it will change it a lot in the building were you speaking to us from the United Nations donald trump was obviously no fan of International Institutions im guessing a lot of people where you are hes a massive sigh of relief when they found out that joe biden had won ive been speaking to some senior u. N. Officials in recent days obviously they dont say anything publicly they are very very concerned about the wrath of President Trump and hes still going to be in the white house until the 20th of january but i think they feel that he has cast a shadow over multilateralism the United Nations for the last 4 years worth reminding you that the secretary general of the u. S. Came into Office Almost exactly the same time as President Trump he started his job 20 days before President Trump so antonio terrors all the time has had a trump in the white house hes been u. N. Secretary general and i think that has caused him to be very very careful looking over his shoulder i dont think at any point they felt that the u. S. Was going to pull out of the u. N. But they know that trump didnt like paying those jews to the u. N. The large amount of money that the u. S. Pays to the u. N. And they were concerned about him cutting budgets and so i think relief here at the u. N. As well and just one final question james we are of course in the middle of a Global Pandemic and it was just in the past few months that President Trump announced that effectively the the u. S. Is going to pull out of the w. H. O. And with it the funding that he gives the w. H. O. What do you think happens to that is it too late the scale that back or or or how do you think that dynamic might change. No because its not actually been activated yet so i think that is one of the things that biden will reverse i think there are many in the u. S. And in Democratic Party circles who believe the w. H. O. Is a pretty imperfect organization so i think there will still be calls for reform i think what people here will be looking at at the u. N. And in the Wider Global Community is for us leadership on covert 19 really every country has been fending for itself there has been no Global Cooperation at a time of a Global Pandemic and the hope of the u. N. Secretary general mothers will be the u. S. Will take a more traditional role in leadership as we come to a time where there pretty soon might well be a vaccine that is is fine for the rich countries its not fine for the poor countries how are they going to get it housing to get distributed i think the u. N. And the Wider Global Community will be looking to the biden ministration to help them. James bays our diplomatic editor speaking to us from the United Nations james thank you. Lets go back to the u. S. And the some interNational Reaction to the fact that joe biden is now the president elect prominent democrat and Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer has thanked the American Public for maintaining faith in the political system. The long dark night in america is over and a new drawing is comic. And i want to thank all of the millions of americans who voted i want to thank the millions who are volunteers and poll watchers and small dollar donors. Deep we did not give up on America Donald trump so limits start democracy so try to destroy our democracy but as the election showed the American People never lost faith and now donald trump go home to florida. Nancy soderberg is former u. S. Ambassador to the United Nations and she says one of the reasons all trump failed is that he didnt listen to the concerns of the American People its a exciting day for americans half of us anyway this is a very tight election was tighter than people expected the democrats did not get this the senate tighter margin in the house so it sends a mixed message that we still will elect republicans to congress but even republicans realize that was not in the best interest of our country you see celebrations not just in new york but across cities here in jacksonville even people honking singing that this Long National nightmare is over and i think what happened to the president is he never understood that this election was about the American People and not about him and joe biden understood and spoke to the American People their concerns and people just want enough of that and want to heal. What was really key to bidens victory was his ability to flip states and one of the states that may have swung democrat is georgia now bidens margin there is thin leading georgia secretary of state to call for a recount the state hasnt actually voted for a democrat in nearly 30 years but this year black voters turned out in force and thats in largest thanks to one person thats stacy abrams she not only lost the race to become governor 2 years ago by just 55000 votes she accused republicans of widespread Voter Suppression doing everything they could to purge black voters from the rolls and battle civil Rights Groups and court over Ballot Access so instead of running for Senate Abrams instead got to work fighting those efforts her organization registered approximately 800000 that georgia residents to vote. Well tony what canst from the new Georgia Action Fund the Community Group engages with under represented communities in the state says that there are many reasons behind the high voter turnout this year well i think 2020 has really has been a voting motivator in and of itself we see a lot of things is really coming to coming to their breaking point we see protesting in the street because we see people dying on television every day that look like us and were tired of it were tired of a criminal Justice System that treats our people and fairly black and brown and immigrant and were and young people unfairly so i think that that coupled with co that i think that there was just a massive reaction we cant take this anymore. And theyre having celebrations in georgia and the celebrations continue outside the white house that black lives matter plaza which for months has been filled with protesters but today we can see an outpouring of support for the president elect of the United States joe biden. However well the weathers having its own battle between the red sun the blues at the moment weve got some cooler diving out of canada across the Pacific Northwest behind this weather front over towards easter still a little bit the heat around we should see temperatures still getting up into the low twentys for new york and for daisey but its that cold up towards the northwest western parts that is going to win out even in l. A. And San Francisco temperatures struggling to reach 16 celsius thats good news in fact as far as the wildfires are concerned of course the cold turning blue to purple now thats going to dig its way a further southwards and he switches to go through sunday and going on its a monday the committee applets 19 celsius on monday grab a cold weather gear were looking at 2 celsius the top temperature here is because 3 chews day still just about getting up to 23 celsius in they say but that cold air definitely having an impact across a good part of the country it does bring with it clouds rain showers and also some wintry weather to some snow well see some of that wintry weather pushing across the mountains and as we go on through the course of sunday going on in some monday sinking further south with some heavier showers coming in across the plains is sinking its way down to central parts. Flow welcome back heres a reminder of our top story and that is that joe biden has been declared the president elect of the United States it follows more than 4 days of painstaking ballot counting in a handful of swing states and now president elect joe biden is projected to have secured the white house with 290. 00 electoral votes against the incumbent republican President Donald Trump this comes after he was the clear the projected winner in the key states of pennsylvania and nevada trump has not yet conceded the race with his campaign has actually launched on number of lawsuits to try and dispute the result. But this isnt just a historic win for biden whos got the most votes over any candidate ever but also Vice President elect. She will be the 1st woman 1st the south asian and 1st black person to hold the Vice President s office.
