A separatist struggle also an economy near collapse we meet Syrian Refugees living on less than 3. 00 a day in lebanon. Well its been 3 days since election day but americans are still waiting to find out who will be their next president the race to the white house is headed for a photo finish with every hour now rowing the gap between donald trump and joe biden or heres the overall picture so far with just 4 battleground states left to count any of them could give biden the win now hes pulled ahead in georgia in the last days in the lead in nevada trump is ahead in the other 2 states but the margins a razor thin now those states being continue to be counted are the ones that you see here in yellow biden now has 264 Electoral College votes trump has 214 but still puts both in the range of that magic number of 270 likely result is not enjoying her on 2 states well as weve been saying biden is now leading in georgia by around my. 100 votes the bulk of the remaining mail in ballots are from the city of atlanta thats a democratic stronghold over in pennsylvania were hearing that the state there of course where joe biden was born is well is just hours away from giving us a result trump leads and has been consistently shrinking that lead and the remaining mail in ballots mostly from the democratic leaning cities of philadelphia and pittsburgh and theyre suburbs so that gives biden a good chance to actually catch up and as the vote count drags on supporters on both sides are becoming agitated counter protesters have faced off in michigan nevada philadelphia and georgia Trump Supporters of back the president s claim condemning what they see as ballot manipulation by democrats meanwhile biden voters are demanding every ballot be counted we have correspondents covering the story across the United States the moment were going to whos done by for us and joe bidens home state in delaware but 1st lets cross over to alan fischer in washington d. C. And allan of course encouraging news for the biden can coming out of georgia but as dawn breaks in washington were waiting to hear from him and from President Trump any sign of any movement there. Well nothing from the president but of course he had his News Conference what just over 12 hours ago just under 12 hours ago when he came out and made a statement that many republicans have criticized seeing that hes undermining the very essence of the u. S. Democracy when he claims that some ballots shouldnt be counted because theyre illegal again throughout the day the Republican Party made allegations of fraud and illegal ballots but they never gave evidence to back that up in fact one court case claim was thrown or by a judge who said all youre bringing me are stories of what people have told you yet you have shown me new evidence of this and what is interesting is that georgia may well flip to joe biden the democrats have spent a lot of time in a lot of money in georgia youll remember a woman by the name of stacy abrams she ran for governor 2 years ago when she lost very not only she decided that she was going to essentially marshal a get out the vote operation in georgia and in other states but particularly in georgia with an eye towards the 2028 president ial election and it looks as if that me what because we are seeing a large increase particularly in some republican areas but a lot in the likes of atlanta all of that democratic vote and that could be what joe biden needs to push him over the edge if he wins a georgia its all over there is no other path to 274 donald trump that doesnt include georgia so you see why its important big given that the lead is less than a 1000 its almost certainly going to mean its almost certainly going to mean legal action as well so he could well end up in the next couple of hours being declared the winner in georgia but that doesnt mean to see that that will make him the president elect heres another reason why the Biden Campaign desperately wants to do well in georgia that they would like. You get more than just 27271 they would like to have a Significant Bank of Electoral College votes behind them more than just one state more than just 10000 votes to give them a mandate they would ideally like to hit the figure of 306 which is exactly the figure that donald trump had 4 years ago you remember that in various points until people corrected it he was talking about how it was a huge landslide how it was a massive mandate how that gave him the right to do what he was doing while he was in the white house i think just as a sense of delicious irony the Biden Campaign would like to hit at least 3 or 6 so that all eyes are on georgia in the next couple of hours but we should. Caution while some states mean well give is the results in the next few hours there will be legal action weve seen from the Trump Campaign well see what happens for the moment thanks to the days elevation there in washington d. C. A very different story really as we cross over to jim whos in wilmington delaware joe biden of course has played this very diplomatically not over confident jamal but confident asking for patience and understanding to all the votes are counted its measured its responsible and thats what many people that voted for him want to see. Centuries ahead of what many of his supporters will be saying is that joe biden was he hasnt announced victory as president is in fact acting more president ial than the president himself in the sense that all his messaging has been centered on true main issues one that democracy must be protected everybodys rights should be protected everybodys vote must be counted and true of course in a very very divided American Society so yes indeed the messaging or the contrast between what has been coming out from the white house and those being coming out from joe biden here in delaware couldnt be greater. That being said there has been now the interim websites that the Biden Campaign said they were going to set up a transition website of him coming into the white house if indeed he was to win that website is now up live actually it hasnt declared victory its saying still the message on the home page of that website is that every vote still needs to be counted but the fact that it is a transition to the white house website that is now live would speak volumes as to how confident they believe they will win one of the interesting things that was mentioned there about georgia and the count in georgia so hell well one of the ironies if were talking about ironies in this election is that in one of those counties Clayton County where the late john lewis was from he was one of the civil rights icons and somebody who was working very strongly against the policies of donald trump who passed away well thats where. Its believed a lot of the pro biden votes came from that helped to bring him catch up with trump and tip over what the biden camp is hoping to do. Is introduce some legislation which is looking to call or name after him the fact that these former political potence of trump or including. John lewis a century had many commentators here are saying is the last laugh in this election is something that a lot of people have been pointing to is one of those ironies that have come out from this vote as well. Jamal thanks very much for the update. Lets cross over to robert coochie hes an associate professor at Lancaster University joins us now via skype good to have you with us on the program obviously bidens lead in georgia will have rattled the white house do you think donald trump will concede what do you think the strategy is now for the president that sits in the white house. Yeah we heard his speech about 12 hours ago where he made it clear that he thinks hes still winning and that there is fraud going on out there i dont know that weve ever seen donald trump concede to something so even if it goes 2 or 3 more weeks with Court Battles before we have a definitive answer here its still going to come down to that the election was stolen at least from Donald Trumps perspective and thats going to matter in terms of how the house and senate operate together with a biden presidency if he does get into the white house and how local governments are going to respond how local citizens are going to respond to a biden turns presidency over 4 years that they believe that stolen has no results of concern in 2000 that that election was mired and been taken over by the Supreme Court and that created a bit of constitution that went on though the next huge sort of push me to his or next term indeed of course all the people listening to what the president has to say and believe what he does say if he claims that all legal votes which is sort of touched on being counted in the election is being stolen how bad could this get in society because weve seen sort of you might say peaceful loud boisterous demonstrations are not so new within the last 24 hours. But we have seen some balance to and we have seen drops of violence and so there are concerns that as this drags on particularly as were going into the weekend if people are not working or busy otherwise and donald trump comes out with a really ruckus sort of tweet or speech or talk we might see that unfortunately increase but you know even if even if jordan goes to joe biden that can still be contested and and i think this is a real test for the american democracy again when we have people either calling for votes to stop being counted or votes to be taken into a building and were having observers on both sides quite frankly not necessarily holding the rule that theyre supposed to do and making sure that this is going to cleanly so donald trump certainly have some concerns that he can take to the courts and we have to see how the american publics going to handle that but of course he took from the front of what happened 2000 there are differences between in the goal bush election to what were saying now it was really a debacle in florida the way they counted the votes the way they actually released the results back and 2000 here weve seen a very polarized Election Campaign 2 very different. But incumbent president in a candidate who could not be more different from each other i mean the vitriolic discourse that weve seen that in the past 12 months has been quite shocking and yet has galvanized each of their respective bases hot to see how this polarized country is going to find a unified voice. Well you know we kind of suspect that out of joe biden got into the white house it would still be a term presidency at least for those 1st few months if not the 1st year or so as he contested the legitimacy of it but absolutely right i mean donald trump brought in 5000000 or 5000000 more voters to his side and he did when he 1st ran when you look at a map of the United States even with the new flip states up at the north and the southwest to possibly with georgia the coasts are still blue more or less the northeast and in the west coast in the middle part is still red so i dont think people realize that joe biden was going to win he would win by such a small margin and thats really telling about the Trump Supporters and it is a logical divide thats out there and joe bidens going to have to find a way if he gets into the white house to bring those people so the to the table theyll still felt like the election was stolen wasnt theirs to begin with and you know we dont know how hes going to do you know that hes calling for patience and calm but it only last for so were getting an update from georgia the vote difference now is 917 in bidens favor and when the dust has settled from this election whichever way it goes. Do you think that there is time now to discuss the way 50 states vote and their voting procedure because voting isnt so much an issue its the its the state laws that allow ballots to be voted to be counted after the election date if that post stumped or before the vote date itself i mean reform of the election is something that is always debated do you think there is space for they sold there is a discourse that can occur if if he the candidate it. Takes to the helm of the presidency again. Well we did go back to the 2000 elections and a couple after that we did have massive issues with machine county and we did actually have a cleaner election in that sense now so there have been improvements to to the machines on the ground there are still some issues but there have been some improvements so im hopeful and i think we should be hopeful then that we do have conversations not just about how a states rights that they call the federalist kind of federalism sort of aspect of states rights here but but in the Electoral College and the questions about even though the popular vote meaning toward joe biden as well that Electoral College part is really something that i dont know that well ever be able to come down to have a conversation about why do we continue to have this why is this party turning this into a sport into a horse race why are we not just looking at popular votes i dont know that well have that big of a conversation but possibly organizations within each state will bring this to legislatures in the coming months or years and we might see surrounded the creation of those things instead of having the courts making those decisions that we might have legislatures making here we should see what happens mr robert thanks so much for joining us from Lancaster University thank you still ahead here ricos Constitutional Court weighs into the election crisis as Government Forces around the homes of opposition leaders plus. Ethiopias Prime Minister says a military operation in the Northern Tier grey region has clear and limited goals thats after calls for immediate deescalation from the International Community.
