Our pop up guy sleeping in jail for nothing ok he still doesnt have the flu loose there this christmas one of the last president ial t. V. Debates on al jazeera. Welcome to the final episode of the stream app under the United NationsGeneral Assembly the u. N. And the string teamed up this week to bring you some of the most important global issues being discussed at the United NationsGeneral Assembly so these are big conversations important conversations were not intending to have them without you so we are on t. V. We are on instagram we our you jump into the comments section of new t can be part of our discussion so today were looking at activists musicians who are determined to make sure the Paris Agreement actually happens the angio pass way to paris uses musicians and art and culture to try and move the needle on Climate Action take a look. Climate change is an issue that affects every person on earth. And music breaks down and redefines geographical borders. And use it as a universal language in Climate Change a global concern. A huge opportunity presents itself with the ratification of the parents agreement not only to establish a Global Climate agreement the chance for a diversity of voices im around the world to unite to come up with Innovative Sustainable Solutions in a global plan of action as we are in a state of emergency. Activists musicians so good to have you jesse tell the world here you are hello im jesse paris smith i am a musician and cofounder of pathway to paris and so happy to be here with you happy to have yellow if i get introduce yourself. Im Rebecca Boone and im our circle founder with jesse partly to parents and the cellist. Now i never thought id get to say this but how to tell the well to you are there maybe one or 2 people who dont know already well into the street. And how the smiths im a writer and a performer and i am also a proud mother just see paris. Ladies great to have you i havent gotten. A good debate going over ready on the unit you so nessie is so says i dont think it will have an effect on climate whats it possibly to paris music is just music justin. Well i couldnt disagree more with that statement 1st of all weve been doing this for 6 years and weve firsthand seen the power of music and specifically on the Climate Movement it started 6 years ago. Becky and i are both musicians were both climate activists and we were so inspired by the peoples climate march which took place in new york city it was the biggest most diverse climate mobilization in history and we were still so moved by this incredible moment there was such a historic moment and we didnt sense that there was a cultural event tied to it nothing to not only celebrate this amazing moment in history but also to do that now what piece like moving forward what are the solutions how can we maintain the momentum on this incredible collective action and see how to move forward so we put together an event in new york bringing together musicians and artists and activists leading thinkers scientists climate experts in an effort to join together a huge diversity of voices and to come up with Innovative Solutions together and what we saw through that what is an actual true and genuine feeling of this gap between music and culture and the Climate Movement and we have seen so many incredible things come out of that that could never have happened from anything else because the power of music and the arts as you can see with any cultural humanitarian social movement in history music is the oxygen and lifeblood of these movements and it brings people together it creates community it creates such a diverse amount of collaboration that never would have occurred before and it just engages citizens in such a way that they wouldnt have otherwise been engaged. As these cultural events these musical events they bring people together they create community they open peoples hearts they ignite the passion in the people and they also instill in them so much hope and optimism and music is comforting and healing and its it just is so many Different Things that its just not a its an irreplaceable element and these home meant and and they just couldnt say enough about it and all of us can give so many tangible examples of why music is is just so important in this movement how do you give us a tangible example yet. Yes patti i could get one but lets have her 1st no no i want to see if it i simply got to say. That the Climate Crisis is a Global Crisis and music is in is the most unifying of all of the arts is a universal language everyone is saying everyone responds to music and ive seen you know through pathway to paris and and and just doing concerts if you do or concert 2100000 people 1000 people and talk to them about the things that we need to address and then you have so many young people rallying through music its not music itself its unifying power and thats what we need to unify my principles in order to make change yet what i was going to say was. There it would be wonderful enough if they were just concerts but they are they are not just concerts and thats not the purpose of them the purpose of pathway to paris and our initiatives is to bring together as many people into the conversation as possible and make it as global and diverse of a collaboration as we can but the purpose of it is to arm citizens have the tools that they need to bring to their communities to bring to their local governments so that they can be part of that movement so the reason that we have musicians and activists saying climate experts and writers and scientists and regular people is because our intention is to show every Single Person on the planet what their role is and how important their role is and arm them with all of the tools and the facts that they need to get involved and so our audiences are very busy during our show its not a passive event which would be wonderful and theyre very active they have a lot of things that we made. And do we signed letters with petitions we take pledges we get up and we do actions together they learn saying they take things back to their communities and every single one of the vents you watch before your very eyes people get all of the information they need to see their passion they can i had it you see that turn into action and you see climate who is boy and right in front of your eyes and its the most incredible thing in the world and we have actually pushed forward with policies and things that happened because as aunt created at our concerts and our initiatives and video. Projects and stuff that weve done with our part no again is ations and working with people on across the world weve made incredible things happen in c. S. And big of this engagement. Jesse that the people in the in the u 2 comments section who are music lovers they appreciate music but they do not understand how patti for instance you doing a concept is going to impact Climate Change ok well heres one tangible example i can give you so each of our concerts depending on the city that were in the state of the world whatever the current urgency is we choose a topic and we have our audience says write a letter very specific important letter and so for example in 2017 we were very concerned about. New york city divesting its pension fund from fossil fuels so we partnered together with 350. 00 and other groups and we developed a Campaign Around divestment in at our concerts we had our audience members joined together during the concert theyre already full of love and passion and excitement and they want to get involved and they want to learn how they might have just come to the concert because they liked one of the artists who are performing they might have none 0 about Climate Change they might have not cared about it or believe in it but in a concert throughout the whole night youll have films and you have speeches youll hear from people and it will open you up and youll learn and its yes i dont know i think. You know im thinking of thinking that the people who are in a huge new comments then they need to go to a profit to power something and then theyre getting it is you explaining it beautifully i dont i dont and if youre up to my its. Going to go to the security and joseph is a Climate Action warrior he is part of an Organization Called 350 dot org is an ngo that hes trying to build a Climate Movement if were talking about climate activism i want to share with you what joseph is saying about why he so critical right now. When patton you pick off the off the back of that not understanding the full extent of the crime a crisis is what worries me most right now were living through the realities of climate induced disasters our storms are more powerful than ever sees a warming arjen life is changing our food is becoming more difficult to grow the fires are burning morpheus the across the world and if this is today what does tomorrow float for our nation ration and for the generations to come. Come in action is important to me because its about setting the foundations today in our policy in a way of living in our Society Foundations that we will ensure our fish generations can continue to build strong resilient to stand once a future is. How do us so tied up with a pathway to paris if we have to make Climate Action actually happening why well i think is how ready i dont think that its hard to. Its more like why not because everywhere around us is proof that action must be is paramount right now we are already in a terrible crisis time and there is no more time but i think that these specific questions should go to rebecca and jesse because they. The reason that i work with them is because they have the language they have the energy they are the ones who are doing all of the footwork. I react emotionally to these things i react as an artist a performer and i pin my face on our young activists all over the world and. You know its heartbreaking every day i mean whether its. The fires in california the rain forest in australia fires in portugal flooding in the sudan and drought in yemen. Wherever you look you see that people are suffering because of Climate Change and so i am they are not as the forefront warrior but as a someone who. Were follow and give my energy and give my love and whatever i can to our young who are growing the real work. Back im going to play a clip and scream if you open full length you and jesse and patti and im going to ask you about that performance in just a moment this is from then. On arm. The man. Good no one. Knew you cheer on. The yeah i was very. Honored to. Be you knew. It was beautiful. Man. Believe. In. The back im going to be a movement well youve been chinese galvanize people using my music and audience coach at to make people laugh get them to act say 6 you seen how do you feel have people as i did shes changed. Well its a really interesting time right now in the world because when we started pathway to paris it was all about Building Momentum to help make sure the Paris Agreement was formed after seeing critical history with what happened with kyoto in copenhagen and now our focus is how do we turn this paris given into reality of limiting global temperature rise to 1. 5 degrees and current science is showing that were very close speed modeling projections are even saying maybe in 4 years we will hit that 1. 00 degrees which is no longer a livable planet and so or at least will be will start to see mass migration and so for him for us i think were trying to through music through the power of art and culture and Critical Thinking and building bridges and bringing people together because this is really all about collective action and collective solutions were trying to also create awareness and time and solutions for for regular citizens and thats why we started the 1000 cities and for. Carbon freedom because the idea behind that is if a 1000 city is can hit net 0 as soon as possible we can turn the Paris Agreement a lot closer into action. And so were were helping support city as well and terms of figuring out how to reduce their Greenhouse Gas emissions because theres only so much carbon budget left for each city and were getting close a lot of cities are getting very close at hitting that carbon budget and thats when things will become a lot trickier and will need to start thinking about adaptation as well as medication for people that can no longer live in. And places in the world that its safe due to Climate Change. Opening team musicians that we spoke to a little bit earlier where they explain what is it that a prestigious musicians as poets as artists and why Climate Action is so important have a look praise and want which is not enough we need a sense of universal responsibility for moderation to rebalance our relationship with this blue planet. Of hope we can all busy come together. And help create a Brighter Future for all of us and when talking about the Climate Crisis i do believe that this is absolutely attainable we do have the power also mentioning a power that i think people are now about one of his really well known sons and power is put in there and so were going to hand in a little bit but hes on you tube right now thanks for watching i do believe that music can influence the thinking of how the change of people about Climate Change just as it has influence and impact to various cultures to the young it can be more press fallons. Well i do think this is an intergenerational conversation because this is our one and only planet and. We need we cannot give up we have to i think hope is essential to being alive on planet earth and for us we are musicians we are connected through the power of music and we also are connected by we love inspiration collective inspiration and weve seen that through our advance weve seen how much action has been created for example in new york city when jesse was talking about direct action we and the letters we we actually sent letters out. To America Blasio and comptroller Scott Stringer to support or to encourage new york city divestment of also shields for new york citys Pension Funds a new york states Pension Funds and that was major collective action that took place so we really do see the power of bringing people together. Yes you do you want to jump in and i won i guess when its really quickly i was amazed when we to grammas heart of their parents is a concert at Carnegie Hall when they. Had the audience write letters during the concert and spoke to them about the importance of this i mean in all the years that i have been conforming and even all of the benefits i done i have never seen direct action at a concert and direct action that actually was successful and so i just i think that its just the beings have parents its yes its cultural its that joins us through art through music i have myself i have met so many people all over the world through pathway to paris with like minds and inspiring others but you know they they go across the board you know the political local action with the awareness really. Is something you have for our consciousness and i who arent quite and. Ive learned quite a much and im a fan im a work i just wanted to. I just want to add one thing is. That Letter Writing Campaign was only one campaign that weve weve hosted and been part of we do that at all of a vent and that and spacey was a successful from that Letter Writing Campaign sending 3000. 00 letters from one concert to comptroller Scott Stringer as well as a huge internet push for people to call and send their own letters outside of the concert that led us to getting a citizen hearing with. Councilman tisch james which led to. The announcement of a new york city divesting from fossil fuels and that was a huge victory it was a historic moment because new york city was the 1st city to make that announcement and what that showed to cities around the world is that there was such an open Playing Field to make history that the transition from out of the fossil fuels into 100 Percent Renewable Energy is uncharted territory and there are so many opportunities for cities and mayors and countries and president s to be the one who makes these decisions to set. Practices for cities around the world and they want to be the ones who make these historic changes and who put themselves on the map in that way and so new york city making that an announcement made london make that same announcement and made cities and countries around the world say oh well we want to be the one to do that so it is it is showing that it came from a concert and pushing citizens to get engaged at this concert to writing letters to getting a citizen testimonial hearing to getting an announcement to write worldwide like how do you have a ripple of it saying that i always think jesse i he you you have persuaded me you should know you know if you maintain and yet not yet can not is going to keep talking at you and tell you all persuaded i didnt show you something here oh my not tell this is coming up on september 24th the high level round table on Climate Action this is state its a business is all gathering together virtually actually on this illness platform joining but sure this is whats happening at the high level what if you seen in your time as an activist musician well youve seen peoples attitudes change towards their environment to hold the climate Climate Change. Well i said as a child i remember my mother being very disturbed because already she was seeing changes in the ocean changes in the way you know she would say the smells so strong of salt there used to be thousands of clams and and oysters and not only as of. You know all kinds of seal a friend she is she was very worried about how it was changing and i started no one things my score or even in such but people werent so interested in the. Dylan didnt write a song in the heart rate is going to fall. Into this but it wasnt on the for current there were many other important issues. In. The war you know it. Was a war in vietnam in of course civil rights and and and. And we just the focus was not on climate the way it is now if you really were. Paying much attention to it and. All of this im sorry to see young activists to see the work done to see the work that. Pettway paris has done to see all of this awareness so its in doubt who are 350. Im going to sing thank you because i want to the audience with something to go away with gods behalf very sorry and just you know feel that hes needed because talking about it had to do we got to know something amazing patti and jessie and rebecca people have the power was written by patti smith and her late husband it has become an absence of activists around the well i want to end with this the 1st thank you so much guests thank you you and thank you to the see the medias own a copy of the a.
