Leading opposition calvinism better restrains the country after a violent response to the contentious election result. And russia says its won the race for a coronavirus moxy there are serious concerns though about the speed of its development. Welcome to the program if youre just joining us the presumptive Us Democratic president ial nominee joe biden has chosen senator harris as his running mate for novembers president. Election in a tweet confirming his pick biden presented to her as his record on social justice i have the great honor to announce about pick come a harris a fearless fighter for the little guy and one of the countrys finest Public Servants as my running mate and this is what come a harris a self tweeted joe biden can unify the American People because he spent his life fighting for us and as president hell build an america that lives up to our ideals im honored to join him as our partys nominee for Vice President and do what it takes to make him our commander in chief so heres our team rob reynolds is in los angeles and Campbell House his home state of california john hendren is standing by in chicago to tell us about how the important swing voters of the u. S. Midwest are likely to react and alan fisher is outside the white house 1st though a report on joe bidens running mate. Emily harris has been the favorite to fill the democrats the past look for some time here. She brings a High National profile as a former president ial candidate a senator from california. And family connections to biden she was Close Friends with his late son beau because this is my belief child of a mother from india and father from jamaica she takes 2 important boxes as a woman of color. So any or any really good message right shes really good about how to fix in me in a very clear to the army into the American People former attorney general of california shes used her skills as a prosecutor in the Senate Hearings to pick apart arguments put forward by the company station but that all title has also brought criticism during her tenure as attorney general there are a lot of questions raised about her going with us to intervene in a variety of types of cases including Police Excessive use of force allegations as well as areas around dread that could really become a problem. In the 1st democratic president ial candidate debate she had a Tense Exchange when she said joe bidens past few on the segregated schools was hard full of the modern us politics it all seems a long time ago smart and charismatic shes been the front runner for a reason and 55 more than 20 years younger than the candidate shes seen as the next generation of Democratic Leaders alan fischer aljazeera washington for President Trump was quick to take aim at comedy harris saying hes surprised that joe biden would choose her choose by number one draft pick and well see how she works out she did very very poorly in the. Primaries as you know he was expected to do well. And she was share that happened right around 2 percent. Spent a lot of money here a lot of things happening and so i was a little surprised that he picked her alan fischer joins us live now from outside the white house allan so on historic moment there in u. S. Politics but of course it hasnt taken long for trump in the trunk campaign to respond what more they even say. Well the Donald Trump Campaign has already been seeing that camelot harris called joe biden a racist demanded an apology and still hasnt received it the reality is that its not true camelot harris never called joe biden a racist during one of the debate she called out his position on the segregation of school buses in the past and said that it was heartfelt she never demanded an apology but that gives you an idea of the tone of the campaign that were about to see over the next few months it was interesting that donald trump went on the attack against campbell has said that shed lied about many issues this was a president who of course has been fact checked and found to be wanting when it comes to the truth many many times its also interesting as well that donald trump has contributed on 2 occasions to camelot hardasses reelection count election and then Reelection Campaign as state attorney in california in 20112013 as for the Biden Campaign well theyre putting out a statement saying that in the hour between 4 and 5 they raised more money than they had at any previous point in the Campaign Cycle it would appear that camelot harris is a very popular choice and certainly people seem to be on social media betty enthused by her selection of what is interesting as well as that from someone i keep in contact with who is a republican in iowa sent me a note and said well thats confirmed im definitely voting for biden. Yeah i mean and also its worth pointing out to our viewers that there were a number of other contenders for joe bidens pick me but it boils down to 2 very important factors though didnt al and gender and race. Well youve got to remember that joe biden wasnt quite balanced into the fact that he would pick a woman but Bernie Sanders was asked that during the primary campaign during one of the debates and quite openly said yeah im definitely going to pick a woman as my Vice President ial candidate and joe biden was then said yeah well i suppose i will as well that might not be an exact translation of what he said but certainly he wasnt overly keen it would be suggested but certainly what weve seen over the last few months with the black matter protests it became i suspect imperative for the democrats to pick a woman of color and we saw that in the last 24 hours when leaders in the Bike Community sent an open letter to joe biden saying look when you make your choice please can it be a woman of color and that is exactly whats happened certainly there were others in the running valve demings is a congresswoman in florida there was a possibility of her it was cut and by us is a congresswoman from california also chair of the Congressional Black Caucus she was also a late runner a late favorite but in the end it boiled down to a couple of things joe biden wanted to pick someone that he could trust with taking the top job if anything happened to him could walk into there all straight away and certainly he saw camelot hardasses someone that could do that as a capable senator but someone who was also on the Intelligence Committee would be across many of the threats facing the United States from day one and then there was the 2nd thing personal chemistry certainly joe biden got on very well with susan rice another woman of color she sat with him for 8 years in the Obama White House the 2 of them are very close but in the end he obviously thought that camelot is would add a lot more to the ticket idle lot more enthusiasm to the ticket and perhaps bring more voters to the ticket and given that this could end up despite the polls at the moment to be a very tight president ial race and they always tighten towards election day that was seen as a crucial. Issue certainly Vice President ial picks are picked on the basis of do no harm he obviously sees camelot harris is someone who will not only do no harm but will enhance the ticket so its going to be biden had this for 2020 and thats an important point to make allen just a final thought you before you go i mean uniting talking us politics for some time particularly since super tuesday so many issues around race and culture in america at the moment i mean what sort of bounce then is house is because v. P. Likes to give biden in the polls at the moment. He will get a bonus theres always a Vice President ial pick bones its almost inevitable its whether or not he can sustain that certainly what weve seen from the republicans and from donald trump over the last few weeks is trying to paint joe biden is out of touch with the black community we have parents that there are republican operatives who are helping can you waste his Election Campaign such as it is the whole intention is to try and siphon off black votes away from Joe Biden Joe biden is very popular in the black community for a couple of reasons one hes seen as an ally and 2 he was but at core bombers Vice President and many people think well if youre good enough for obama then hes good enough for me so its whether or not they can siphon those votes off but it makes it much more difficult know that a woman of color has been selected to go on the president ial ticket the 1st time that is ever happened in the history of the republic all right allan fish and there live for us outside the white house on an always good to get your thoughts lets cross over now to rob reynolds he joins us live from a couple of houses home state california in Los Angeles Rob this presumably hasnt come as a surprise to many people in her home state of california because the person often picked as a v. P. Makes good geographic balance doesnt it but now as we were saying to alan there the other important factors of biden race gender and also age. Exactly derren and just to pick up on some of the points that allen a very cogently made if you look back at the history of the democratic race for the nomination in 2020. And you look at where joe biden finally broke through the pack it was in South Carolina which in terms of its democratic electorate is heavily africanamerican and black women have been the mainstay of the most faithful and predictable voters for Democratic Candidates across the country so this in retrospect looks like a really obvious move to pick a woman of color to. Not only shore up that support among black women but also to energize. All people of color and the people who supported the black lives matter protests throughout the last several months here in tel in california in states literally all across the country now i want to point out that california is important not only because its the biggest state its the biggest hole of the electoral votes in the Electoral College and it is a firmly Democratic State theres no question but that the democratic candidate would defeat donald trump in california in november but also california is sometimes referred to as the a. T. M. Of the Democratic Party the cash machine that democrats rely upon to fill their coffers and in that respect harris who is so well entrenched in california politics knows all the leverage to push will be an additional asset to the through the the democratic ticket because she will. Resume of lee. Engender a flood of new money into the Biden Campaign and i think he referred to a big fundraising hole that has just come in in the last couple of hours according to the Biden Campaign so weve seen. Political figures like the governor of california its his sports idols like Le Bron James and major hollywood figures like rob reiner the filmmaker and producer and director all coming out enthusiastically hailing the choice of camel harris so it looks like california will most likely be giving a lot of money to joe biden in the wake of this pick and it is also very likely that biden and his campaign are going to push now in a big way to fill up their treasury for the final stages of this Campaign Leading up to the november 3rd election but it is worth pointing out is that i mean how this is the 1st africanamerican woman to serve as attorney general in california i want to people make up i mean what shes seen as a puppet a tough on crime because a criminal justice record has often been on the scrutiny hasnt it. It has and we saw that in alans report as well that there have been criticism of paris during her tenure as attorney general for not aggressively. To say the least and aggressively. Seeking prosecutions of Police Officers who are accused of wrongdoing of Excessive Force of of shooting black man in some instances and also on drug policy which in which she was you know put out a and here to a sort of centrist line tough on crime but i dont think that those are going to be huge factors certainly the Trump Campaign may pick up on them but just the simple fact of harris and who she is her background her whole personal story is going to probably overwhelm those criticisms and lets face it karen this election is really a referendum on donald trump and on his tenure and on his ability or lack thereof to fight the coronavirus in the United States and i think that is going to be issue number one so. Great bringing all that together in this ticket is is something that i think the democrats right now are very very happy with rob just a final thought from you before you go i mean were talking to the usa about how rice is known somewhat of a centrist figure how much is that in keeping with bidens political profile i mean hasnt told the abolition of the police for instance but trump has called him a puppet of the radical left so i mean what is how this bring to the broader political mix. Its going to be more difficult for trump to convincingly assert that paris is a radical leftist she is not Bernie Sanders she is not Elizabeth Warren she has expects perience in governing or administering a very large bureaucracy the state of california is just a system as attorney general so she has all of that experience and i think that she does bring a certain balance to the ticket insofar as her positions have been to the left of bidens but again karen you know the events of the last couple of months have changed just about everything in the black lives matter protest the homicide of george floyd all of that has changed politics in this country and it has changed positions biden has changed positions paris has changed positions so they have both moved towards the the left away from the center i think that again this is something that the president and his team will try to paint them as radical leftists i dont know whether that will be a convincing argument outside of President Trumps own base and just a final thought i think if you look at this historically derren this may signal the end forever of all male all white president ial tickets in the United States at least so far as the Democratic Party goes i see it would be very very difficult for future nominees to not try to balance the ticket in that way in terms of a racial profile and a Racial Justice rob rob reynolds live for us there in los angeles lets go east in a bit talk to john hendren hes live from chicago johnson lets talk about the midwest many voters there whites working class i mean how important are these swing states to the Biden Campaign and how in the how is it go down making. These states are critical and if it werent for these states would not have one in 2016 he won by flipping over by a very narrow margin these swing states throughout the midwest were talking about wisconsin pennsylvania ohio michigan the nearly flipped minnesota a fairly liberal state he was just a number of thousands of votes away from doing it there and he did it in a couple of ways republicans tend to do very well in rural areas those are reliable Republican Voters donald trump did especially well with rust belt voters those middle aged to older white voters who feel. Part of political conversation they look to trump is somebody who could shake things up but also trying to be in the suburbs around major cities cities tend to vote democratic theyve got larger minority populations who have different issues that theyre interested in they tend to vote for the democrats but what has happened here is that if youve got connelly harris youve got 2 things that you can do for the democrats one of them is that you can bring out africanamericans in the way that barack obama did particularly d 2008 but also in 2012 that will be important states like michigan weve got a large black population in and around detroit and elsewhere but the other thing she can do is bring in moderates the midwest these are moderate voting territory very liberal candidates like Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren dont tend to do as well here because people are more moderate thats how lehrers his record as a prosecutor also in the way shes governed in the Senate Despite the fact that shes from california so she might be able to help him slip these states biden might have been able to do him self some good if he had picked a midwestern governor like Gretchen Whitmer of michigan but that racial balance was also important to him and he clearly believes that kamel harris. And help put him over the top in these critical states that likely decide the election john just a last thought from you i mean you covered the George Floyd Killing and its aftermath extensively in minnesota what does the camera harris pick mean for the black lives Matter Campaign in these states that youre talking about. Absolutely danny it will be very important and its a its a kind of Interesting Development in the sense that yes she will help by driving up africanamerican voting likely if president obamas instance is any precedent but she also has them for voting record with that record grounder is a prosecutor where she was known for aggressively prosecute prosecuting drug crimes she was not known as a particularly aggressive prosecutor who Police Events going to be a problem in the black lives Matter Movement because the people eat that movement their number one goal is to crack down on police committing crimes themselves so that bit of a mix there youre starting to see some criticism from the far left of the ticket because of common harris but nationally speaking this is a very moderate ticket in the fact that you can help i try to bring up after the voting that is significant its similar to see 99 to do to do southerner picked al gore another southerner 2 very moderate Democratic Candidates this is a very safe ticket despite its diversity all right so john hendren live for us there from chicago john thank you lets talk now to reverend they have daughtry from washington shes a former Democratic National convention c. E. O. Great to have you on the program thank you for waiting i know youve been waiting. To come on look i mean this wasnt an easy decision for joe biden was it i mean harris attacked biden in that very 1st t. V. Debate that we saw he was very upset very angry but he seems to put that behind him what does this say about joe biden he doesnt hold grudges doesnt. No he doesnt and it also tells us there joe biden he is a political veteran hes been through this before hes been on bended bait stage and has taken his own set of hard blows when he was running against barack obama but he has his eyes on the prize he understands whats at stake here and so he was looking for a running mate there would complement his own skill set there would be simpatico as hes been saying and i think hes found that income or harris and i mean what does this mean for women for black people and joe biden supporters because this issue has been simmering for about a year amongst the chattering classes doesnt it. Yeah you know im actually in actuality joe biden is on the same time line is previous candidates have been Hillary Clinton announced her running mate 2 days before the convention and same thing with bill clinton so hes on the same time i but theres been so much excitement because of the Vice President s commitment to to letting a woman and a Vice President made very clear that he wanted a running mate who would reflect the great diversity of america. As part of his criteria so for for today to come as an africanamerican woman i cant even begin to tell you how thrilled i am this daughter my great great grandmother was born a slave in 7090 and so all these years later to have a black woman at the head of the ticket is is just thrilling for us and i think it means so much not just for black folks but for the Asian American community and for all women to be able to see that just one more crack in the great glass ceiling. And it is worth pointing out there some of joe bidens allies thought that Campbell House was too ambitious there were not of leaks that came out of this vetting process it does show just how much of a fight to her assessment given that shes a woman of color shes fighting on 2 fronts rice on gender. Yes and that is our you know the continuing battles that we are having in these United States of not around the world around the role of women and we were particularly distressed that women were being held to a different kind of standard being called to him bishes for proceeding so in the same kinds of offices that men have been pursuing through these 45 president s and so that kind of a racist sexist trope has no place in american politics and i dont believe that any of those who. Said those things will say them again i think they have learned quite well that though that that kind of language is not appropriate in our democracy one of the one of the big hot potato issues is crime i mean what about her record on criminal justice i mean she served the state prosecutor and attorney general in california how is that a lot to play into what she brings to the table for joe biden and the democrats well as connell has often said her proudest moments were going into court rooms to represent victims of crime to represent those who didnt have a voice and standing before the judges saying come along harris for the people so she understands the experience of trying to ensure that justice is blindly served to those who need it most whether they are Community Members or whoever they are the justice is for all of us that shes done a great job with that shes been a fair minded progressive prosecutor and her understanding of the system will be key for joe biden. Victory in november reverently a daughter great to get your thoughts mia come back and talk to us here not as they are any time thank you very much indeed absolutely thank you for the invitation when he spoke to Simon Rosenberg a former adviser to president bill clinton he says this nomination will not be good for donald trump. Dont trump isnt one of the worst electoral positions of any sitting president in the modern era of american politics hes running one of the worst campaigns that weve ever seen hes trailing joe biden badly so i dont really put a lot of stock in the efficacy of these attacks and i want harris is among the most inspiring and capable leaders that we have in the Democratic Party shes a friend of mine and know are very very well and i think shes going to bring a lot of energy and passion and excitement to this ticket this is a this is a dark day for the Trump Campaign theyre way behind and i think shes going to bring an incredible boost of energy to the Biden Campaign in the final months of this at the end of the day this is going to be about joe biden and lets just be very clear as one of your other commentators said earlier theyve been making this leftist mob argument for months and its not working its all they have its because the economy is cratering president has laid the white flag of surrender to cope that unlike any other modern country in the world i can go down the long list of his failed billiards president and so they dont have a lot to run on in the in the initial attacks ive known come up for a long time she was known as a moderate crime fighter in california i mean the idea that theyre trying to cast her as some left this is just its a joke. Well the rest of the days news is still to come here in aljazeera including a growing dispute between greece and turkey of oil and gas drilling rights in the Eastern Mediterranean sea. Also some countries get rid of monuments and into slavery limited by this former slave trading port is going the other way. Hello there is a very unsettled picture across eastern sections of the United States out across the west it is that calm and rather the critical fire danger is very high across those areas but you can see here quite a line of thunderstorms in the last few hours and those thunderstorms were particularly powerful and damaging winds were recorded up to 160 kilometers an hour and these are well a cold Straight Line winds that come in with this line of thunderstorms and look at the damage that has been done you can see those trees literally just snapped off half way down huge amounts of damage there was power down these big vehicles were also overturned on the highways and in some cases even blown off the road nothing for you that is out of the picture certainly by wednesday we will see more there really anywhere from the ohio valley across towards that the mid atlantic down across into the southeast but still mostly care cost much of the west ham doesnt see bad in seattle 22 degrees but once you had inland this is where you got the high temperatures the low humidity and very high fire danger and then as we go through wednesday the shot will die down of course but really what the way across into where areas along the coast that we could see some heavy amounts of rain particularly along those coastal areas across into the carolinas and all while that of all showers and thunderstorms developing through the Northern Plains and eventually moving east. The people the should be an International Investigation because we dont trust the lebanese investigations lebanese authorities including the president knew there was a large stockpile of Ammonium Nitrate at the port. But the 10 firefighters who died in the blast were not aware of the risks when they were sent to put out a fire of unknown origin were up against incompetence were all up against corruption were up against all that system that got us where we are today and its the whole system that is wrong its also system that is flawed we want bury our dead before we bury their corruption before we bury them the blast deep in the already dire economic crisis which pushed half of lebanons 5000000 people into poverty aid agencies are distributing food and medicine filling the void left by a government that has long failed to provide basic services the state is close to bankruptcy this is also a quote from the doctor and the hospital no one supports me.
