Democratic president ial nominee joe biden choosing senator coming to horace as his running mate form of members president ial election in a tweet confirming his pick biden praised them as ours his record on social justice i have the great honor to announce that ive picked her wrists a fearless fighter for the little guy and one of the countrys finest Public Servants as my running mate and this is what comes to her wrists herself tweeted earlier she said joe biden can unify the American People because he spent his life fighting for us as president hell build an america that lives up to deals im honored to join him as our partys nominee for Vice President and do what it takes to make him our commander in chief so heres a team brought brunells is in los angeles and coming to harriss home state of california john hendren is standing by in chicago to tell us about how the important swing voters of the u. S. Midwest are likely to react and alan fischer is outside the white house to 1st though cullens report on joe bidens running mate. He smoked for some time. She brings a High National profile as a former president ial candidate a senator from california. And family connections to biden she was Close Friends with his late son both because this is my belief child of a mother from india and father from jamaica she takes 2 important boxes as a woman of color. Such as dynamic or and really good at messaging right shes really good at talking about complicated subject and making it very clear to the audience in to the American People former attorney general of california shes used her skills as a prosecutor in Senate Hearings to pick apart arguments put forward by the come to me station but that all title has also brought criticism during her tenure as attorney general there are a lot of questions raised about her going to intervene in a variety of types of cases including Police Excessive use of force our geisha as well as areas around drug policy that could really become a problem. In the 1st democratic president ial candidate debate she had a Tense Exchange when she said joe bidens past few auntie segregating schools was hard full of the modern us politics that all seems a long time ago smart and charismatic shes been the front runner for a reason and 55 more than 20 years younger than the candidate shes seen as the next generation of Democratic Leaders where President Donald Trump was quick to take aim at kemah harris saying hes surprised that joe biden would choose her she was right number one draft pick and well see how she works out she did very very poorly in the. Primaries as you know he was expected to do well. And she was share that happened right around 2 percent. Spent a lot of money here a lot of things happening and so i was a little surprised that he picked. Alan fischer joins us live now from outside the white house on and so on historic moment in u. S. Politics but it hasnt taken long for trump on the trunk campaign to respond what theyve been saying. Well within a few seconds we saw the 1st attack against camelot highest the obviously had several ready to go depending on who joe biden picked what is interesting is that donald trump said that Campbell Harris was always his 1st draft pick but you know 2 weeks ago he stood here in the white house and said that susan rice was his 1st draft pick he also accused of lying in important issues im not entirely sure that that is going to be a fruitful line of attack for donald trump who has been fact checked several times and many people see hes told thousands and thousands of mistruths while he has been in the oval office and its not an exaggeration to say thousands and thousands what is interesting is that donald trump when he was in the briefing called on people from you would regard more as friendly news outlets he didnt call anyone from any of the Major Networks or any of the major Wire Services thats because perhaps they were ready to ask a very important question to donald trump if you dont like camelot how it is why did you contribute to her campaign to be californias attorney general in 2011 and then once again in 2013 so its going to be a difficult line of attack for donald trump but we saw perhaps a preview of what he is going to do during the election we saw him come out into the briefing and Start Talking about the trouble that weve seen in places like chicago and portland and saying this is the blueprint for the radical left if they win the election and thats clearly something that the intent to push between now and november and alan lets remind our viewers that there were a number of contenders werent there for joe bidens pick as v. P. But it boiled down to 2 very important factors gender and race. Well you have to remember that joe biden committed to picking a woman after Bernie Sanders did when it was just the 2 of them left in the race it really came down to will you pick a woman Bernie Sanders and he said absolutely and joe biden said he probably would certainly over the last few weeks given the black lives matter of protest it became important that there was a woman of color on the ticket and we did number of prominent black leaders over the last 24 hours saying to joe biden it really has to be a person of color as your number 2 certainly what weve seen over the last few weeks as a number of people be elevated a number of women who perhaps than have a National Profile suddenly did and there was a number of people who could have picked cotton bass who is the chairwoman of the black caucus or in the in the house he also could have picked demings a former police chief and know congresswoman in florida in the end it came down into what joe biden thought was important someone that he believed could step into the rule of president from day one if there was a problem with him Kamala Harris has experience in the senate she sits on the Senate Intelligence committee she is close personally to the biden family she was very close to your bidens son beau and so in the end it was perhaps that that one out remember shes been vetted very very closely with the campaign they would have gone through everything from a tax returns to a Financial Reports they would have asked of the all important question is there anything that can come out between now and the election that will damage the Biden Campaign one of the biggest things a Vice President ial pick will be told is do no harm joe biden obviously believes of the 10 or so women that he hired on the shortlist kamila how this is the one who will do no harm and perhaps even give him a boost in the election come november all right allan fish there live for us outside the white house on and thank you for that has been out to rob reynolds hes live from tampa how is his home state california in. Sandra lees this presumably hasnt come as a surprise for many people in california because the person often pictures of v. P. Makes good geographic balance doesnt it but now as allen was saying there the other important factors for biden are race gender and also age. Thats right and if you look in retrospect at the history of the campaign. For the democratic nomination you see that bidens big breakthrough moment was in South Carolina and that was due in large part to black voters and black women who turned out supported by and pushed him really into the lead position and he very quickly sort of eliminated all of competition except for Bernie Sanders and. Eventually in short order went on to take the. Nomination which will be given to him formally next week but so black women were essential and the fact that he has picked a black woman is perhaps a recognition of how much he owes them politically now here in california its a Democratic State it has been for a number of years its overwhelmingly democratic parents so its not as if the camel harris pick will shore up bidens fortunes in california because they didnt need to be shoring up but california is very important for another reason as a source of money for democrats in fact its been called the a. T. M. Of the Democratic Party the automatic teller machine with deep pockets in Silicon Valley and in the Hollywood Community and all of those very very important for democrats running for office and there is reporting that on the back of the announcement and the appearance tomorrow with both candidates on the stage together the ticket on the stage in wilmington delaware that there will be immediately a big fund raising push that will be anchored perhaps by the figures like George Clooney the actor Jeffrey Katzenberg the hollywood film director and. We look at some of the reaction thats coming in we see from the the community of folk of politics ports and entertainment all enthusiastic about camelot harris look at what the goldberg the actress and popular t. V. Host here she says this is a great moment she is ready Bernie Sanders also providing some some praise saying that Campbell Harris will fight for health care and for working people a liberal and james the basketball great saying that her pick is well deserved love to see and supported and rob reiner who is a very important figure in hollywood he is a veteran film director actor and liberal activist saying finally a president ial ticket that looks like america so with paris being entrenched here in the democrats money machine that will be a very important factor and significant if joe biden is to try and top the colossal fundraising the President Trump has already accrued yet robin i mean how this is the 1st africanamerican woman to serve as attorney general in california where you are what do people make of that then and what shes seen as papa tough on crime because her criminal justice redcode has often been out of scrutiny. Thats right that is one area that has been under scrutiny tough on crime yes but tough on Police Misconduct no. Unwilling to intervene in drug prosecutions that were seen as conducive to mass incarceration no so there has been criticism from the left from the progressive wing of harriss tenure as attorney general generally though she was a popular figure as attorney general and that propelled her into the senate with. A considerable margin of victory in 2016 the same election that elected donald trump to the white house but im sure that. It will be brought up by the Trump Administration but its kind of its kind of if you think about it its kind of a little bit of a stretch for drunk to criticize her for being very law and order and yet also claim that shes some sort of radical anarchist or ultra leftist who will who will pull. Joe biden strings as if he were some sort of puff it up its its kind of a contradiction there so we shall see exactly how that trump camp being an argument progresses right now i think that were seeing historically the era of all white men on a president ial ticket at least in the Democratic Party is over i dont believe that we will see that again in the future and in the Republican Party if they ever want to win anything maybe theyd better start thinking along those lines as well. In Los Angeles Rob thank you for your insights there lets cross over now to chicago and bring in john hendren john lets talk about the midwest many voters there a White Working Class how important then the swing states to the Biden Campaign and how will the respect go down there do you think. With their critically important i think its safe to say that in 26 to one in the midwest thats what won him the election and thats because there are so few states that are really in place florida is one of them but other than that many of them are in the midwest and so trump won by narrowly flipping sometimes by a few 1000 votes states like wisconsin michigan ohio and the neighboring state of pennsylvania all of them. Around the great lakes all of which you run any almost one minnesota. So every harris can do whos helping them on the moderate voters of the meet us truck tends to dominate in the rural areas and the democrats tend to dominate in places like chicago where i am now. But were trying really won the 2016 election that was in the suburbs and it is suburban women in recent polls who have shown that theyve gone away from President Trump and that could be a significant problem for him its actually an advantage for biden to have harish on the ticket because she has a moderate shes got that more enforcement record and people in the midwest tend to be more moderate Bernie Sanders doesnt generally do as well here as in the rest of the country so she can help in urban areas by driving out the africanamerican vote and then she can help with her moderate use in places like the suburbs Rural America is still pretty solidly republican so it gets to be a battleground across all of these states but the margin of victory in some of these states is 10000. 00 votes or less so one thing commonly here is can do is drive out the africanamerican vote in a way that barack obama successfully did in 2008 in 2012 and that alone could make up the margin by which trump one in 2060 yet john and you you cover the George Floyd Killing and its aftermath extensively for al jazeera in minnesota what does the camera harris pick mean for the black lives matzoh campaign in these states that youre talking about. As interesting as rob touched on this a little bit shes got a pretty aggressive record as a prosecutor and she was not known for taking it easy on africanamericans for not prosecuting the kinds of drug times for. Which a lot of people believe that africanamerican trip disproportionately prosecuted in so youve got a bit of a split yes she is africanamerican or biracial and she people tend to give her support for that she had a relatively progressive to moderate record but in the black lives Matter Movement one of the things theyre really concerned about is prosecuting Police Misconduct thats one of the rapture is that she has not been aggressive enough it is rob said just before me shes not been aggressive enough many people believe in prosecuting Police Officers so there is a question of whether she will be attacked from the far left the kind of Bernie Sanders Elizabeth Warren supporters and you seen some of that already on twitter but i think youre going to find the vast majority of people who support the black lives matter if not the activists or themselves are going to lean toward the democrats or theyre d not going to vote at all john hendren live for us there in chicago john thank you for that so lets bring in ellen Joya Williams shes a political strategist and founder of l. J. Strategies she joins us live via skype from new york city great to have you on aljazeera let me ask you 1st what kind of moment is this a biden on the countryman biden often talks about himself as being some kind of bridge or how much is he showing that he also wants to be chance from a signal embracing perhaps the Younger Generation younger black voters women who want to see something different. This is a historic moment not only for the Biden Campaign and that only for africanamerican voters but its the entire country and what biden is demonstrating with his nominee his Vice President ial pick today is that he understands the moments that we are all in that this time while we are yes need to wrestle back the country from the forces of donald trump theres also looking to the future and who does the Democratic Party reflect who does our country reflect and he made his 1st decision as of potential leader of this country and a potential and potential leader of the Democratic Party by choosing and senator harris as his running mate and of course there arent that many black women in positions of power so this i suppose wasnt inevitable but as you say this is a huge moment but what about the black women whats your personal take on this. Yeah i mean its a huge moment for her but i also from back from black women it was black women who have been propelling it who have been the most loyal supporters and loyal voters of the Democratic Party for some time and it was black women that you know following the conversation not only on social media but that was are also being signaled to the Biting Campaign that if you want to infuse the excitement into the race if you want to pull out the people who will not doors who will make phone calls who in this pandemic situation will still commit their time and resources to make sure that we have a win in november thats going to be black women and it was black women was that we want to return on the investment that we have given to this party and we demanded representation in terms of a Vice President ial pick that was one of our own demands but we see today that biden understands the moment he understands and wants to. Honor the people who have been loyal to the Democratic Party not only in votes but who actually go out like i do those calls making sure to pull people out to vote and recruit donations in order to make sure we go on to victory joe in terms of the broader body politick i mean how much of recent events the killing of george for lloyd the blood clot is not a movement how much have they had in this decision by joe biden because many observers talk about this racial reckoning thats sweeping through america right now. Yeah we have had plenty of opportunities as a country to really confront our history of Racial Injustice in this country and the problem well has been that we have not had leaders who were willing to confront it head on art and instead maintain the status quo i think what joe biden is signaling today is that we are not going to miss this moment as a country that not only will we make sure that we evaluate and to let candidates of color particularly black women or black leadership to meet this moment but then as you will probably will begin to see that pivot to talk about the issues that black women voters that young voters that progressive wing of the party care about youll begin to see that pivot of the campaign and senator harris and joe biden talking specifically about those issues in order to bring us to victory and so that is what i think Vice President biden is recognizing i think it is recognizing all across the country that we have business racial reckoning moment that have come up many times a floor in this country but now we have leadership that is willing to actually act on it join a final thought to you lets just stick with women in u. S. Politics as a final point i mean in terms of previous women v. P. Picks there was Geraldine Ferraro i think in 1000 for sarah payne in 2008 why do you think its taken so long to get to this point in america what does that say about the treatment of women in u. S. Politics. Wow america is sexist just in the mix is right right and so the reason why its taken that long is because people operate not only in a political on the political stage with racist and sexist views but they operate in that way in their workplace or education bases in universities right though this is not just isolated politics race of the myths that. Permeate throughout our society and when you have individuals that hold these beliefs and well again you have leadership that is not willing to step up to. Nip it in the bud when you see it whether its in a Hardware Store that somebody owned that wall how your particular people whether its in a law firm that is produced predominantly are white or how we prosecute or not prosecutor hold people accountable now that we are at this moment we demand more from our leadership to actually meet this moment with actual change joy williams really good to get your thoughts on al jazeera thank you very much indeed for talking to us joy thank you for that thank you or just move on to some other news now its exactly a week since a massive explosion devastated lebanons capital earlier crowds gathered down the barrel of a beirut support the site of the blas to hold a vigil.
