I think the thing im hearing from the protesters is you know were not watching and we dont care what you say we care what you do so today as a step towards that deconstruction of stomach gray that says im the Minnesota Department of human rights is filing a commissioners charge of discrimination to launch a civil rights investigation into the Minneapolis Police department the investigation will review in p. D. F. Policies procedures and practices over the last 10 years to determine if the department is utilized systemically screamin toward practices towards people of color or john hendren joins us live now from minneapolis where this all began 8 days ago john so lets talk 1st about that george floyd Family Press Conference it was tearful it was poignant what more to the family have to say. It was moving to 2 main points if we heard roxy washington you say was that her daughter would be without a father for the rest of her life and that she wanted justice for george floyd a loser that you points weve heard over and over from members of his family seeking to humanize him and to let people know this was a real person who police it was in chile snuff the light out of life out of in her own view but here at the memorial for george floyd let me just show you a little bit there and there are thousands of people there are fewer now because we had a pretty heavy rain a little while ago but you can see its kind of a festive atmosphere even if its a bit somber and its summer of course because right here is where george floyd died right here on the road and you can see the memorial of flowers for him and the latest addition to this is this giant nero of george few toys and im going to introduce you to someone who organized this event. So this is tony clark and bruce harmon. Tell me just why did you put this event together because our allies say to me is no the black lies and lies about it and you cant do a Community Without unity it out photo the defining. So if you need he has 7 crazy days enough for a life. Time isnt open up to to many want to so in love you know full needy joy. And a a side. Bar we need to put him back in order you know i mean its all we had to organize a community but you know different areas some people cant get up and yet we try again and werent when you saw other you had to serve justice with each other in that we had some of what you saw and then you can see what weve done here that we have all different shapes and colors that are out here everybodys coming together to support each other and thats what a Real Community would do and thats what we need to start doing on an every day basis continuing from where age of on a journey tell me about this mural behind us what what how did this come about. Because i right know that they felt like casey is it is in the dark but as you saw they are going to come up with is going to come in as just a light on a mother so as not as this right here. On it they it we dont not keep on to see what we do and that theres a mirror well get to your faith and i think thats really symbolic the light coming out of his you days debby i mean if you want to make to see the signs and let me ask you when i 1st met you on friday night you were limping why was that because i saw it on the arms and we protect asserted National Guard they got the protocol to move out the way. I could run saw im with everybody back they fired a shot me in my leg with rubber bullets so this police shot in the in the leg while you were trying to protect the National Guard from the crowd yeah. I mean i just felt like a. Number on a kill peace and peace is some day you know we stand together and all you want to do is you serve justice and no matter what a father they thought i did each force. Let me ask you something john. How long are people going to stay out here well i know yesterday we stayed out here until past curfew and and we stayed out here until the sun came up so im hoping everybody is ready to do the same thing today because we have something that we need to show and grow and we have a right to assembly and we are mourning for our brother and we are going to be here and stand with him. And were not going to we know hes going to i got so if i mean can you speak just to get up is going to go like this every single day and so just as the search because they want to go inside our new movement george can go inside. But then it doesnt stop there we need to keep Going Forward even after justice is there because we just got justice for george at that point what about the rest of america we need to keep moving forward so this doesnt happen again and how many how many days are you all going to be out here what youre going to take for this to and for everyone to say ok we achieved our goal as long as it takes honestly im ready to stand by my brothers and sisters across the world weve been out here every day really. Every day this going to be like this every single day so i think they need to get used to it because we need to show america when you saw other countries. History is repeating in no possible way we did not want homes dont want to go because at the end days this is our unity and well Tony Clark Javan Harmon thank you both for and im going to give you one of us thank you. For talking to us and for letting us know whats going on here and again every day at this spot its been peaceful all day all the time the police have come in here with tear gas and rubber bullets and there has been violence and looting and fires in other parts of the city but youll notice none of these buildings have been looted here it is always been peaceful there john before you go just just a final thought i mean minneapolis is one of the so. It is under curfew youve been out and about talking to people youve been able to send paul the the state capital what i mean how are people dealing with this what are they telling you. You know. Well youre right in st paul there were thousands of people standing in front of the capitol listening to speakers as National Guard armored personnel carriers were standing at the foot of the capitol of the state of minnesota and what we heard from people is really what you just heard from these 2 gentlemen right now that theyre going to stay out here and tell their charges against the 4 officers involved but be until theres stops being incidents of young africanamerican men being killed by police and exactly when theyll be satisfied that enough progress has been made for that to happen thats going to be determined by the people in the street staring john hendren live for us there in minneapolis john many thanks for that well there were some extraordinary scenes in washington d. C. On monday in our correspondent Shihab Rattansi joins us live from there now so you were there last night caught up in all the drama of the flash bangs of the tear gas and the smoke grenades making way for president trying to tell us where you are now and whats happening. Were about. 6 blocks up from the white house what happened surely you know. A number of groups just splintered off into smaller groups some we were told the Lincoln Memorial would go over that no sign of any protest. Amazing pictures which im sure have gone viral already of the Lincoln Memorial just flooded with military personnel on the steps in front of Abraham Lincoln talking about emancipation but then we were turned back into we found a group who had spent it off. The ring at a masonic temple here on the steps of a masonic temple. Sort of. Blocks from the white house they were protesting that. The Bicycle Police. They were them. That they might be subjected to so simply the group just started walking again so were heading back to the white house now followed by about 20 Bicycle Police at least. All around us and then at least before behind us we had sort of a a convoy of police cars that were behind us they seem to disappeared for the moment but the point is theyre over there other. I mean the point is that keeping the police guessing all day. Even from this group weve seen a couple of groups. Side streets. But you know this is just like 10 people it could be people going home but the point is theoretically theres a curfew we should say that its interesting as we were driving around town the police didnt seem to be enforcing that we could see you know. People walking their dogs they would be told to go home they didnt seem to be actually telling everyone to go home however this group of protesters gathered at the. School for justice after the death of mr floyd. So were actually heading back to the white house now actually to talk to someone. Whats going on here under the surface is interesting is kind of the movement right here this is a movement this is a change for america that thing is the American People not only just the black community but americans are tired of everything thats gone on the end just as is going on in our country the Police Brutality and everything so we need to make a change we are here to tell president charles that we want a change and we need to have reform on the criminal justice reform. He doesnt think is listening. Now i really dont thats the sad thing about it is it just about him though i mean isnt it about this predates donald trump doesnt it lets face it this is about a society thats been like this one time oh of course weve dealt with racism here in this country for a long time this is the beginning but the only thing about it is that we dont have any. What you call it any day direction from the federal government and this is going on not only with just this with george floyd well also with the corona virus so we need in a short life we dont even have a leader does the right there when it comes to pandemics or domestic issues that is going on in this country and has been going on in this country for a long time so with the death of george szell it is about a couple of 2 to to address you know a broken society in general that its not just about race and political clout is because hes just the one that was just seen on video he was in the was in spokane he was in the ones that was out there that didnt get seen by the video or camera or phone or anything so that thing is they. Are tired of whats going on tired of the lies of the federal government and the state local governments are doing and we need to make a change when it comes to our coming to Justice System which is a big issue in our country thank you thank you so much thank you very much where having about 30 you could probably just about i dont know where the crowd are going to focus this is where i get a lecture from a photographer you dont understand lenses but i dont know if you can just about see the white house towards the end of the street but its way way down you know about 6 blocks id say right so were having about to the white house now we understand there are other groups heading through chinatown on the way to the capitol capitol hill and that certainly was it was a bit of a flashpoint yesterday but well carry on following these protests. Have a catch up with him another half an hour or so but for the time being stay safe well talk to them all right lets head out to the west coast a car for us just come into effect in los angeles which has seen some unrest and looting over the past days robin is live for us that now rob sort of tell us where you are whats happening around you things are looking fairly quiet there behind you. Well there in the curfew went into a fact about a quarter of an hour ago and the people who were barging in protesting along hollywood boulevard near where i am know have largely left the area. Line of Police Vehicles going. Through dont know exactly what that is all about but theyre heading in. That direction of hollywood there have been throughout the day large peaceful protests there were thousands of people marching here along hollywood boulevard more recently there have been thousands of people gathering at they home residents of the Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti to make their thoughts. During their presence to bear on on him some people have not been complimentary of his performance during this series of of of nights of civil unrest overall there have been close to 3000 people placed under arrest many for curfew violation misdemeanors over the past 3 or 4 days here in the greater Southern California area and again curfew is in effect for 10000000 people in Los Angeles County curfew or not there are some people here that we want to talk to and one of them is gary gary if you would step over here please gary a native angeleno and youve been out here all day and i see your sign toast show us your signs and sciences cops where are you at what what what whats the message there well i keep hearing through either the media or friends or people that there are still good cops out there like theyre not then you know its just a couple about options yet youre not going to get a good apple from a bad bunch i mean if we truly do have good cops we need in the stand up we need then the come out and say right were not were not for this we need them to walk out we need them to do Something Different than what they have been doing for the last half century of our hundreds of years that black people brown people have gone through. What is your take on the Media Coverage to the as you absorb it over the past several days you think its been fair to be honest no i feel that the Media Coverage has been more skewed to link the protestors with the looters and there are 2 dozen different sects of people there are those of us who are peacefully protesting chanting not antagonizing the cops at all and then there are the people who are only the opportunistic scum that are muddying the message that were trying to get across so so what do you think about those people and and how how are they affecting the message and the movement well i feel that they are affect in the way where its just making theres more dissonance as opposed to the message getting across like we need them to stop doing what theyre doing is had they have started in iraq now and we need them to stop doing what theyre doing we need them to step back and either be a part of this or just stay at home stay at home so have people been has been in order to it and amount of attention being paid in the media to those people who are breaking into shoe stores and so forth i feel i feel that very much yes and the problem is i feel the need to needs to be more on us more with us we we need accountability from the media the cops everyone in our government we there just need to be accountability and it starts with differentiating the different sets of people that are out there. Gary thank you very much for speaking with richie you too thanks a lot. All right so again some some good 1st for instructive criticism of Media Coverage of these days of protest and unrest and once again things look pretty quiet here in hollywood but well stick around and see how things develop there yeah well that well talk about a half an hour or so rob when we come back to you rob reynolds there live for us in Los Angeles Rob thank you in new york meanwhile thousands are rallying near the Police Department headquarters adding to demands on and Police Brutality the citys mayor has extended the nighttime curfew until sunday but state Governor Andrew Cuomo has criticized new york citys response to the protests and said police havent done enough to stop new ting and vandalism and hes offered to send in the National Guard to help us to order the n. Y. P. D. And the mayor did not do their job last night i believe the. Second you have 38000 and more a. P. The. People it is the largest Police Department in the United States of america you. A 1000 people and protect property use the Police Protect property and people look at the video it was a disgrace on the citys mayor bill de blasio says deploying the National Guard would only high tensions we do not need nor do we think its wise for the National Guard to be in new york city nor any Armed Forces Im going to tell you why this is really important we have this hour right now if someone needs a History Lesson when outside armed forces go into communities no good comes of it will go but as i was in new york city he says the past trouble is playing out between the citys mayor and the state governor. The governor was not happy with the scenes that he saw of Looting Stores here in new york city on monday evening but so far he has not called for the National Guard but he also said in his words that as you heard there the new york police did not do new York City Police did not do their jobs we were out on the streets last night were out here now and the curfew is officially in place here in new york city right now it started at 8 pm local time so its been in effect for about 15 minutes or so there are several groups of thousands of protesters currently in new york city right now they were just here about 20 minutes ago and they have just left there was thousands of protesters here to trump tower were at now there were dozens of Police Officers it was just somewhat tense standoff here and then the protesters moved away and went somewhere else were going to go try to see if we can catch up to them in a minute here but this just gives you an idea if you pivot around here and you can see how pretty empty this is im on 5th avenue and 57th street right now one of the biggest busiest intersections in new york city and you can see how surreal it is as this city is under curfew and some of the buildings or i should say stores have been boarded up on the right on the left another one boarded up there you can see down 57th street looking West New York city pretty surreal scenes pretty much on curfew the big question now for this evening is with these protesters peaceful as of now on the streets after curfew whats going to happen. And for putting it off as a been shot during protests in the state of missouri they were trying to control crowds in the city of st louis some demonstrators had been smashing windows looting and setting businesses on fire and officers are expected to make a full recovery some coward fired shots at officers and now we have 4 in the hospital but thankfully and thank god theres a lot theres a lot but i you know. What can we make some sense out of this can we make some sense out of this thats all im trying to say mr flores death is tragic but can we make some some some out of a lot of something that these kids come down here i just thought it destroyed like like like like crazy job but now like like like that like theyre influenced by the job and have 5 in each other or flourishing pistols but i have a trice a black man is with the United Church of christ in florissant missouri she says violence there is due to one simple fact that. Ive reached a boiling point and thats what were seeing now d i want to express condolences to those the families of those operations in the uk this fish it is never easy to take a lie and i certainly felt the deep tension in plea of the police chief as he cried but then i only wish that those tears would come every time a black light this last in st louis i wish that those tears would come from all of the people who stand in judgment in this one inch every time a young black person is killed on the streets. We need those t. V. s we need that sympathy we need to actually move was to a different place and we needed to be coming from everyone all the time no matter whose nightmares and. Every evil act exacted against black and brown people in this country since the founding of black people being still 69. Every evil act exactly against us has been. Do we go white me and cracked up by bible i dont see that any differently then would donald trump be to guess today keep wrapped up his little bible thats not new in this country its not our 1st time seeing it and it wont be our last now 6 Police Officers in atlanta have not been charged for assaulting students trying to leave a protest body cam video captured the arrest and shows the officers chasing the pair and grantland in the car the students were arrested but later released and are not facing charges the officers are go to have already been fired theyve been charged with aggravated assault you have us face charges including Property Damage and battery. For the protests against Police Brutality are also drawing more International Condemnation the un human rights chief Michelle Bachelet has weighed in she says the protests triggered by the killing of george floyd are highlighting not only Police Violence against people of color but also inequalities in Health Education employment and endemic Racial Discrimination. Demonstrators want to draw attention to the case of adama trower a 24 year old black man who died in Police Custody back in 2016 the rally also drew supporters of the black cloud was not a movement in the United States and palestinians have also joined in the movement and drawing attention to the aggression of Israeli Forces in the occupied west bank protest has gathered outside the church of nativity lighting candles for george floyd and a palestinian man killed by Israeli Police in jerusalems old city on saturday today we came to show our alliance with the oppressed in the world against injustice against the u. You know. I was there you. Were the protest movement in the u. S. Also saw a boost of solidarity online a montage of black images were seen on social media sites under the hashtag blackout tuesday the concepts spread from the Music Industry with some Major Companies pledging to suspend business. Antiracism demonstrations are also being held in brazil where around half the population is black or mixed race the protesters blame the president an arrow for the growing discrimination records i dozens of protesters chanted stop killing us on the streets of Rio De Janeiro even the spread of coal with 1000 in the country did not prevent them from demanding an end to Police Brutality in south americas largest nation. We are here today because we want to leave we are here today because we are tired of this genocidal state were here to say no more here in the names of those killed in Police Operations were read out loud most of them have one thing in common they are black and poor. Police said the protesters were throwing stones so they confronted them with tear gas and nonlethal force 2 weeks ago a 14 year old teenager was killed by police during a raid in a father the autopsy report shows that the boy was shot in the back by a rifle while playing with his cousins in his room. In 2019 over 1500 people were killed in Police Related incidents a surge of hundreds in a state with a long history of Police Brutality and the Political Leadership including president himself who vowed to dig graves to stop crime this year already over 600. 00 people have been killed the increase illegal talent is because there is an increase in crime or because now there isnt this force from president kerry was the narrow and when. We had a problem controlling the police profitable sonora but at least there was a discourse at least they were trying to address a problem before the military police try to reduce the amount of People Killed but when he came to power along with the current. Gov of Rio De Janeiro that changed they say there is no problem and they dare tell the police to kill more as if thats going to solve rios crime problem human Rights Groups also say that the pace of killings is astounding. If the us police were killing people at the same rate as those killed in rio you would have in the us at least 36000. 00 deaths per year. People have not only been protesting in relation adeel but in other cities as well. They say racism is already part of brazils reality and precedential you also natto is making the situation even worse i. Said war. Alright thats all for now the news continues here on aljazeera after whose truth is there anyway sketch of thats a water bottle. Org. Im. Well i think like the tenets of the navy you wanna know. What. They are that those photos on facebook are telling them i saw the army teaches that it. Was. The. That was. Hong kongs freedom Civil Liberties were meant to be maintained 50 years after 1907. But weve just seen a much more heavy handed sort of crackdown on our freedoms and Civil Liberties in hong kong. Free press emerge from the Umbrella Movement prodemocracy protests in 215 its a direct response to the 2 in lengthy press freedoms in the city. I was a teacher for a long time in hong kong and saving my money paying off debts but i had a blog and i noticed that a lot of stories there were getting traction and i decided to sort of upgrade that into some sort of news outlet. The tools to set something up like this have been democratized and i think we can have just as big a voice is the biggest news outlets. It would be nice to do caroline as a headline like i am on that we are all just getting things ready i guess for the there are 3 of us to attend and crackdown and how thats marked in hong kong which is going to be huge and i feel its something we can probably lead on going to i think the status of a lot of the press in hong kong who may not cover it enthusiastically perhaps for sure tianna money is 1. 00 of the 3 teens that many media will already avoid them and tibet and taiwan sensitive issues. But were structured from the ground up from the beginning to you know resist any of those kinds of problems. As a whole bunch of stuff that you know maybe holmes you kicked off with whats going to happen the next couple of weeks anyway and stuff that we dont know about there is the amount of events for june 4th well basically have the live blog piece or just a page and push the right just continually updated which is the other piece so ive got todd darling and dan garrett doing photos. Then i thought we have you 3 right when do you want to publish the prebuy as soon as it kind of kicks off so we thought. Ok. Well we. Let you know just like in. Front. Of my hero. Because we are about an hour and a half away i make. It over a 100000. 00 people be gathering in victoria one of the few places on chinese soil. There are signs and black cards against the looming extradition bill which will certainly be. Stay with us for the next hour or 2 and weve lived with live running commentary. I know that a. Lot of. Both take. Home going home with. The other while dong. How. Hard that would be. Ok were you. Something. For many people in hong kong the 4th vigil is an indicator of sort of the health of the Civil Society we do a roundup of all the major print newspapers and on the day after to provide our readers with a sense of the media landscape as it is and hong kong so 1st of all your house i will daily newspaper was prodemocracy leanings the slogan to here is very cagey and forth justice will prevail now on the other end of that spectrum we have one way pro and tough on how they are financially backed by the China Liaison Office so we usually say asian backed newspapers there is not a single mention of the video at all. Other Media Outlets have pressures that shippey not. I think the issue of press freedom in hong kong is far more treacherous than in the Mainland China. In the mainland you know how the battle lines are drawn in hong kong theres more of a fuss to fight. In hong kong we dont have sort of news outlets that are churning out completely fake stories. The big problem when it comes to truth and accuracy is that they tend to be either right owned by china or theyre run by tycoons who have business interests in the mainland. Almost everybody it seems is touched by its my right censorship and selfcensorship and thats sort of the the cancerous thing thats been spreading in hong kong for some years. Rather than having one rich benefactor we rely on a mob of small donations from a lot of people. Selfcensorship is a big issue but its we try to fill it up stuff that other newspapers are covering we try to kind of cover and give a platform to that kind of nice. Theres a sim sites there is a continuous timelines of events getting worse and worse and worse in terms of politics. If this issue edition agreement passes anyone physically in hong kong will be subject to mainland chinese truth because they can try reasons to prosecute a man in china and aussie Hong Kong Government to send you back to Mainland China for trial. This is a silent march organizers by the Legal Profession and mainly for the Legal Profession to express this is regarding the extradition will. People with power as a matter we have to believe if you have sufficient to go to the streets and a half in the same. Order that we call upon this government to withdraw the extradition bell this is the clear and i believe the good man of us. Believe the Legal Profession of. This momentum its its going to pull 123 do something to save costs and their own freedom. I think this is a good place to come for politics in the sense that although its a very difficult situation though were in which try to sort of make some impact with the there are sources that we have. Been saying you must buy big play at all they have picked up youve got. To meet i use of my own going up. The prodemocracy lawmakers are having a vote of no confidence and chief inspector carry a lot more dicey got a lot of laughter. Today thats not going to pass but theyre trying to make a symbolic gesture why you got. That tight job people got my day like no no you go home they saw the guy walk they dont tell you want time bob but it dont get dont i could think why my dad so dad and dad. Im going to spend 20 minutes to 3 today could be biggest protest sunday since 2014 possibly since 2003. Weve seen calls with no china extradition thats coming some with just a wooden blaze and while over it as we observe only different liberal progressive prodemocracy groups uniting against the bill. Lets see it lets me what have you been seeing is people being going to homosexual acts all soft people who im marching for to try and stop i told the pads on tape they cant switch them to join this caucus so i need a touching. Scene to make as much as i can my mind already to coming out of the m. T. R. How can you question me massive yeah but im pretty confident. That. This is the best time it comes when i can actually write. Why you cant say what he almost a nation that is very much into one called. Generation the next generation. My. Caught my. Eye suspicion notes on the phone call 3 press purchases have been gathering have eventually become so im happy and point to march. The special unit have arrived where all. The riot shields. Just arriving. I. Believe for shareholders away again and like to stop us on the process. I was saying get rid. Of some sort of action. I. Dont think im mr hanks you. Shot this a still cant make it go. To the police just talk into the cast to report to us that you have to go on. And on. So 19 people arrested. So 1000 arrests and theyve made a show of weapons confiscated and i see. Its been a sleepless long night surely im of the journey so say shes looking at whether actually any Police Stepped over the line but yeah tempers frayed and you go well into the night and journalists will be between protesters and police so it can get chaotic having said all that like its been a huge part of the biggest sort of impact on traffic i can remember. And you feel the probation press today you know one of them burying it or framing this as you know in significant. So i posted this 5 23 am expressing a little bit of anger with the treatment of reporters by the police a little bit of prep a spade my arms but one thing i didnt realize i only realized after looking at photos again you can check here this gun if they decided to use rubber bullets last night then i will be directly in front of the filing and during the whole course they have been pushing reporters in there. Tougher than usual way so it was the bill of warning for forces as well. At the moment. Historic march because that was by far i think the largest in history both home we wake up this morning and government standing from no changes it will be you know run through the ledge to show. The bill will be soon is 2nd reading on the trial of truth and we appeal to all members of the Legislative Council to discuss and debate on a bill in a calm and rational manner i hope that some of the appeal will gold school on eyes ations in society which may be planning. Actions including perhaps some medical actions and i. Feel a political reporter in hong kong gives you plenty of opportunities to be cynical pessimistic. Or a past the all the things that are you gay. Whats even more worrying than encroachment by the Chinese Government is the fact that increasingly apps or things are being taken as a new norm. I think i. Might like a. Lot of its very hard to tell whether its considered to be safe to be working in hong kong the public are of course certain right monitor but will it translate into some kind of physical threat against. Loved ones families i dont know yet ordering by looking. Almost always are they dont come. And its outside trying to do was always our kewl have 0 to go to question that people would like i said oh i see. I dont want to see it in these things anymore. Its been you know it is hard thing to quash freedom of expression of the kind of hong kong but if anything thats all the more reason to document it. But do you think people have lost confidence and civil disobedience and protest as an effective tool do you think that people have lost confidence and protest this using the law as an instrument of suppression have been there for some years already.
