Pushes ahead with its historic attempt to launch astronauts into space for a nonstop. Hello thanks for joining us minneapolis is gearing up for another night of violent protests after unrest over the death of a black man at the hands of Police Officers spread to more u. S. Cities so the governor of minnesota says hes fully mobilizing the National Guard for the 1st time in the States History but warns he still doesnt have enough troops President Donald Trump says the oath or does there need to get tougher and offer to send in the National Military this while appearing to encourage a counter protest by his own supporters on friday nights of clashes in atlanta and houston new york and other cities while the 19 year old man was killed in detroit thats when shots were fired from an s. U. V. Into a crowd of protesters and the continuing protests came despite derek show of and thats the Police Officer who knelt on George Floyds neck being charged with murder so in the last hour the u. S. Attorney general pledged that justice will be served in the floyd case but he said the violence has nothing to do with his death. The voices of peaceful protest are being hijacked by violent radical Elements Groups of outside radicals and agitators are exploiting the situation to pursue their own separate and violent agenda in many places it appears the violence is planned organized and driven by anarchic and left extremist groups far left extremist groups using anti for like tactics many of whom travel from outside the state to promote the violence john hendren spent the night among the protesters and begins our coverage from where it all started in minneapolis. A curfew and a murder charge against a Police Officer failed to bring calm to minneapolis. The citys new curfew beginning 8 pm some protesters responded by setting buildings on fire hundreds of others continued to peacefully protest the death of a black man george floyd after his arrest by a white policeman. Also severely children who was fired shortly after floyds arrest on monday d has now been charged with his murder but its made little difference on the citys turbulent south sunne. Demonstrators defied the curfew and a large deployment of the National Guard some took out their anger on businesses such as the Department Store and occasionally journalists. Others lined up to challenge police who answered with tear gas but failed to control the unrest these National Guard troops have been blocking roads and theyve been protecting firefighters and theyve been putting out the many fires you can see one of them back there but the governor says there simply havent been enough of them and thats why im standing in moore im authorizing and talking to General Johnson to fully mobilize the minnesota National Guard an action that has never been taken in 164 year history of the minnesota National Guard so lets be very clear the situation in minneapolis is no longer in any way about the murder of george floyd it is about attacking civil society. Instilling fear and disrupting our great cities from coast to coast protests and violence have spread to more u. S. Cities in washington the white house was briefly on lockdown as crowds front with police in the capital. And in Atlanta Georgia this c. N. N. News channels headquarters came under attack police cars were also targeted prompting a furious response from atlantas mayor you are just price in our city you are disgracing the life of george lloyd in every other person who has been killed in this country crowds in los angeles chanted i cant breathe some of george floyd final words as his neck was pinned to the ground. And back in minneapolis his excessive days in 1000 ivanka go on John Hendren Al jazeera minneapolis lets get an update from Allison Herrera whos a journalist in minneapolis hi there allison so the governor has announced the full mobilization of the National Guard what exactly does that mean what are you seeing on the ground right now but i dont see any National Guard troops out right now right now im on westlake streets which is sustained a lot of the damage the reporter in a in a previous package talked about so what im hearing and seeing on the ground im sure you can see people passing by me who im some with brick homes and on bicycles im pretty much cleaning up the city after last nights unrest so i guess i mean the feeling right now on the street is that there has to be a turning point that there needs to be some protection for some of these so all of these businesses that are here along the street there are mostly Small Businesses and what kind of sense are you getting from people about what will happen in the next few hours in the city. I think well earlier this morning i was at a meeting over in a park nearby where the city councilwoman alondra kano or the 9th ward city councilwoman she was a meeting with about a probably about between 500000 Community Members and they were coming up with a plan to keep their neighborhood safe in case the violence and unrest spilled out from the commercial board or into the residential neighborhoods because you have to remember that this street even though its you know largely commercial a couple blocks north and south its resin its was in that show its houses its apartment buildings so Community Members here in this neighborhood feel very on edge they feel very unsafe and they want to come up with a plan to kind of. You know guard each other on and keep you can even say and what are they telling you about how they plan on keeping their communities safe. I think theres going to be people out watching their block i there is going to be they set up like a little text message tree between them theres an app that theyve downloaded to use just face it you know basic like Community Members organizing together to do that and i think that there is an acknowledgment that a lot of the people causing this violence the governor himself said that a lot of people causing this violence are not from these communities all right alison thank you for what updates from minneapolis. On the u. S. President donald trump spoke earlier about the protests and said he is preparing to deploy the National Military. We get out of our military there very quickly theyve got to be tough theyve got to be role theyve got to be respected because these people didnt keep up its a lot of radical left dead people and theyve got to be taught that you cant do that so im going now to watch a great lord of the hour we do lets bring in our White House Correspondent Kimberly Halkett socom trying deploy the military. Look this is a nuanced argument but in short no according to an act of 1988 its called the posse come a thomas act it really limits federal military authority when it comes to enforcing domestic policies essentially what this is is that the federal troops could be called in for support if requested and thats a very key word in the other key word is support but the bottom line is they dont have policing authority so they could come in and they could build barricades they could hand out Water Bottles but they cant go grab people off the street and so essential this is the fine line now that so the u. S. President is correct when he says you know that there could be military there to support if requested but the bottom line is the president is not sort of stating the new out nuance of this that there is no policing authority now in the midst of all of this the u. S. Attorney general has spoken in the last hour you played a bit of a sound bite there essential e making the argument that they feel that potentially that if there is another night of violence theyre pointing the finger at who may be responsible arguing that it is far left radical groups with anti felt like tactics is the u. S. President said who is responsible for all of this the u. S. Attorney general william barr also pointing out that as we talk about federal law saying that it is a federal crime to cross state lines of these are outside groups for example going to minneapolis that is a federal crime to cross state lines to incite or participate in rioting so clearly some strong messages being sent by the trumpet ministration in anticipation of what could be another very tense violent night not just in minneapolis but across the country yet and we saw protests right outside of the white house as well overnight and some people saying that the president himself was seems to be encouraging more protests outside the white house and this time by his own supporters. Theres no question one of the president s tweets seemed to be a rallying cry for for supporters or even rioters on protesters from the conservative side in other words what we saw on friday evening was sort of anti trump protests out in Lafayette Park across from the white house at times it escalated to the point that there was secret Service Holding the line with riot gear on there was a tagging of the Treasury Building graffiti thats on the white house campus so theres already preparations underway but its the president who instead of sort of trying to tamp down this violence has actually called out his own supporters to stage a counter protest he said i understand its magen night at the white house question mark magen meaning meaning make America Great again a 2016 Campaign Slogan essentially theres no other way to interpret this then this is the president perhaps calling out his supporters whether or not that will happen the president said hes not really clear but i can tell you already the secret service is preparing in case that happens there riot shields there are extra armed policemen standing guard of the white house in anticipation of what could be another tense night all right kimberly thank you very much for that update. Brazil has overtaken spain to become the country with the 5th highest number of corona virus deaths in the world war than 27800 people have now died there after another 1124 deaths were reported on friday almost 27000 new infections were also recorded in 24 hours bringing the total to more than 465000 but experts say the real number of cases could be 15 times higher president also narrow has pushed back against the kind of lockdown measures implemented elsewhere to slow the spread of the virus. And elsewhere in latin America Chile has now registered coronavirus cases more coronavirus cases than china and in peru doctors and nurses say hospitals cant cope with the rising number of Coronavirus Infections and are demanding more government help despite enduring one of the worlds longest mandatory lock downs its reported 141000 infections and more than 4000. 00 deaths including doctors Priyanka Gupta reports. The stilton is were on the frontline of the fight against the cronulla finalists in who they call the. Dance. These 3 hospitals are overwhelmed with the rising number of cases. Many are dying at home. In crews largest have a tree limb are elements among freshly dug graves. And. Have lost 2 brothers in a month but im glad theyre not suffering any more because of the pain that they went through. For the survivors its a different kind of struggle. Anxious to relatives at a hospital and part 2 are struggling to get proper care for the infected family members and they told me that my mother was entering Critical Care and there are no i. C. U. Beds they see there are no beds prove you in 7 doing one of the worlds longest nationwide lockdown since march which is not due to be lifted until the end of next month. Yet the virus continues to spread lockdowns and social distancing are difficult in a country where more than 20 percent live in poverty and 7 out of 10 workers depend on a daily wage millions still have access to water i found that we dont even have enough water to wash our hands or our things and if we dont have water what are we going to wash ourselves with. Doctors say the pandemic has exposed spruced many existing problems and pushed underfunded and understaffed hospitals to critiquing point and they warn that the battle against the virus will be lost unless they get more government help. On to 0. In just total number of coronavirus cases have surged past 178000 with another record daily jump of nearly 8000 infections and despite the spike Prime Minister Narendra Modis government has announced a major easing of coronavirus restrictions for the 8th of june restaurants shopping sensors on places of worship will be allowed to reopen but in some areas with a high infection rate lock down measures have been extended. In just a couple of minutes to nasa astronauts are due to blast off to the International Space station of a for the 1st manned space flight from u. S. Soil in nearly a decade take a look at the live shot there it is this is the scene at the Kennedy Space center in florida where the space x. Fall. The 99 rocket is set to launch at 1922 g. M. T. Thats just under 3 minutes time and its the 2nd time Robert Behnken and douglas furley have been on the launch pads wednesday scheduled departure of the new privately run spacecraft was postponed minutes before because of weather concerns the weather hasnt been ideal over the last few hours either so it will be the 1st time a private company has launched astronauts into orbit lets bring in n. B. C. s jay gray hes joining us live from the Kennedy Space center in Cape Canaveral in florida so hows it looking jay just a few moments away. Thats amazing i think were going to have a go here today you talk about the weather has been rough throughout the day but it has cleared up and everything a go for launch right now in fact im going to step out of the way and you can see as we get past the countdown clock here at just about 2 minutes to go until launch and. It looks like this is going to fly wednesday Mother Nature said history would have to wait today though it looks like she has given the all clear as well and that this is going to go the falcon 9 rocket with the crew dragon capsule looked up to astronauts on what is considered a test flight here its never been a private company to send u. S. Astronauts into space thats going to change here in less than 2 minutes if everything goes as planned and so they wait for this launch something that the countrys been waiting on for almost 9 years its been 9 years since a spacecraft is launched from american soil and that was here at pad 39 a where right now the falcon and crew dragon are poised to lift off and we begin to see some of the smoke coming from the side of the launch pad here in this doric spot so many shuttle launches going from 39 a and again this is a new chapter in u. S. Space exploration this is the private Public Partnership that most at nasa believe will really open up space lower space travel eventually going to the moon and eventually supporting commercial travel as well but again this is a test flight and they want to work out any problems that there may be with the capsule moving into the International Space station and coming home no time on what this mission may take it could be 5 days it could be up to 4 months and theyll judge that by how the flight goes and by what they are able to accomplish once at the International Space station just under 30 seconds now lets stop and listen as history prepares to liftoff from pad 39 here at 39 a here at Kennedy Space center. They want to express their full payment 15 2nd. 98765432 but here it says lets try to preserve. Those things that cannot be 5 it sounds like. A miracle that you dont know what our front so rise not to do one hour of American Space flight before the bulk of the oceans of a new generation continue to train any 2nd to the flight stage for propulsion is a nominal. Possibility circuits and this is stored. Flying through more drilling and in fact theyre not employed on goal. Compartment. And wont be brought down with throttling down to get ready for the period of maximum dynamic pressure. Were not going along to. Say all systems are go. The whole supersonic. Weve exceeded mach one on the phone. And. Were drawing up the full powers worth while not screw youre looking at a live picture from Cape Canaveral in florida where the space x. Falcon 9 rocket has launched into space. This was the 2nd attempt it was meant to launch on wednesday but that was due to bad weather and it has now lifted off jay gray let me bring you back into the conversation youre there watching it live as it unfolds how significant an historic is this moment. Amazing and what a picture perfect launch here of the falcon 9 rocket capsule pull the way it went just as planned here and really is you know it sounds like hyperbole but it really is a new chapter in Space Exploration youve got a private company now with the ability to lift astronauts into space and thats going to change the direction and the path of how exploration continues moving forward now this is just the beginning of this test mission theyve got to get to the International Space station and then do some work better come back work through any kinks that they may have found during this flight and prepare for the next mission and then what nasa expects to see is that these missions become much more routine and much more close together as they continue to try and push forward in los Space Exploration while it allows nasa engineers and scientists here to focus on deep space and ultimately mars. All right jay thank you well leave you there for now thank you very much for that update from Cape Canaveral lets now bring in david hill mars is a former nasa astronaut and International Space station commander hes joining us from Houston Texas thanks for your time with us i suppose you must be breathing a sigh of relief like many people are that the spacecraft has launched talk to us what this means to you and how significant it is. Well thank you i have to correct you i never was a space station commander i was on 4 Space Shuttle missions all right thank you for that but put it its really difficult to overstate the importance of this mission. You know 1st of all everyones talked about its the purse commercial mission and its the 1st launch u. S. Soil since 2011 is going to mean great economic benefits for for the United States will and will not be paying money to russia to launch our astronauts. And it also is the 1st mission manned mission of a new spacecraft since the 1981 when the Space Shuttle but today off id also like to say that it means Something Else to me personally and i think to people around the world not weve had so much bad news over the last couple months so many deaths and this is that a glimpse of good news something that there is a Better Future that lies ahead of us that theres more than just the peanut and suffering that weve all experience so i think it means a lot for us just to have a positive glimpse of hope for the future i hear what youre saying but i got to ask you this since i have you with us and you are a doctor as well i mean as you say and were in the middle of a pandemic and there have been a lot of her reffing deaths in the u. S. And right across the world and does the pandemic complicate the launch at all so you think that its the right time to be doing this type of ones. Well i think it is i think we need Something Like this as a physician for the last 2 months ive been treating patients with coronavirus in my hospital and my mind is just been focused on that and for me personally just having something that gets my mind off the just the suffering that ive seen means a whole lot we need to have hope for the future and i think that this is things like this can help us out that whole what do you say to the factor what does it mean to you rather that this is private at space x. And not strictly nonstop well it means it means a lot of means that we can allow the operations and management of missions to the space station to commercial on a process and it means that it turns out that they can do it at a fraction of the cost what nasa has been able to do in the past and that means that it can free up nasa to do the types of things that. Nasa is really expert in thats deep Space Exploration. Manned exploration moon things that promise and its not profitable for private industry to do at this time nasa can concentrate on those things and its its historic strengths in fields like aeronautics Climate Change etc all right well leave it there thank you very much dr david helmer as we really appreciate your time with us on aljazeera on this historic day thank you thank you.
