And Everyone Wants to know how long social distancing will last but the real question may be how many times will we have to do this. Hello the World Health Organization has sounded a note of hope for the european nations worst hit by the corona virus pandemic saying steps taken in italy and spain should see case numbers drop soon despite the number of infections in spain has posture in the past 24 hours while it saw 800 new deaths and in italy the number of new cases continued to fall but deaths past the 11000 mark and the u. S. Is bracing for the outbreak there to get worse a hospital ship with a 1000 beds has now docked in new york while the top Infectious Disease expert says there will be clusters in other big cities and a 3 week lockdown has begun in zimbabwe with police and forcing some of the toughest measure seen in africa shops have been shut and Movement Restricted the countrys seen one death so far so with many countries in europe and lockdown the fight can take continues to contain the virus hope around and reports. Even with stringent restrictions empty streets and ever tighter regulations imposed daily declared corona virus cases in europe have now exceeded 400000 continue to rise for the 3rd consecutive day spain reported more than 800 new deaths in the previous 24 hours and after 2 days of decline the number of new deaths in italy spiked upwards again to 812 but new infections are slowing to get down from the numbers not just stabilize requires a redoubling of Public Health efforts to push down it wont go down by itself it will be pushed down and thats what we need congress to focus on france is shuttling patients around the country to reduce pressure on the hardest hit regions but the infection rate is proving relentless and 418. 00 deaths in the past 24 hours take france past 3000. 00 fatalities in paris hospitals are full and doctors have to agonize over who gets a bed and who doesnt sit but that burmas says. Its not fair but rather a stress to stanley pay for us to make choices that we dont want to make and to find ourselves in situations where we have to choose which patients we could get in the intensive care as recently as 2 weeks ago russia had just 10 official cases of covert 19 its fast approaching 2000 now and rising in moscow the city mayor has shut parks closed shops and bans nonessential journeys addressing regional leaders by video link russias president has urged other regions to follow moscows example of. All measures necessary in this situation should be taken even if those not involved in the problem consider them a bit excessive for russia today but as they say god helps those who help themselves. But while millions huddle in the homes around the world hundreds of thousands of stranded european tourists are still struggling to reach their us after 2 weeks in quarantine this group departed from peru on monday with assistance from diplomatic staff we have about 300 people. To the netherlands and there is about 100 europeans to fly from him for them to their home countries. 19 is reminding us how vulnerable we are how connected we are and how dependent we are on each other in the eye of a storm like. Scientific and public ills tools are essential but so are humility and kindness we sorely dont e. T. Humility and i assuming the best of each other we can and we will overcome this together extraordinary heroic efforts are being made voluntary efforts medical efforts and diplomatic efforts faced with a Global Pandemic the responsibility is on all of us to be part of that effort to all brennen aljazeera. So while italy and spain remain under the grip of the virus france is struggling to the country has recorded its worst number of new deaths in one day within a descent of 418 plus in the countrys total above 3000. 00 for the 1st time more than 20000. 00 people are being treated in the countrys hospitals that has about lower is in western france and she says even worse figures could be reported in the weeks ahead. It is a huge leap multiple 100 deaths and policy 24 hours is a very worrying situation indeed but one in a way that we have a lot about the french Prime Minister it was really just a few days ago saying that the 1st 2 weeks of april and were going to that very soon as calls he said that they would be a very very difficult time to france indeed the frogs could be reaching its peak at that time the coronavirus at this stage has been really concentrated the cases have been concentrated in the north east of the alsatian region but the Prime Minister had warned to a few days ago that those cases would really well the spread if you like would really reach across north and from the paris region and to other parts of france and it seems that is in fact what we are seeing a real spread all coronavirus cases and these cases now putting the french destiny not far behind china in the u. K. Field hospitals are being set up to treat coronavirus patients to help take the pressure off National HealthService Facilities where we challenge reports. The crisp white sheets the medical equipment of you youd expect in any long established hospital in the u. K. But this is the countrys newest set up in a matter of days into vost exhibition holes in londons docklands work continues but n. H. S. Nightingale will start taking in coronavirus patients this week eventually theyll be 4000 beds and more such field hospitals are being set up around the country what you see here is a Mass Mobilization taking place right across the country but also at these new nightingale hospitals this is been an Extraordinary Team effort on the part of nurses and doctors and therapists and pharmacists across london but also volunteers and paramedics and people returning to help. Theyll be needed to stop the u. K. s National Health service being swamped in the weeks ahead but although coronavirus hospitalizations and deaths are expected to keep going up the u. K. s chief science officer does see some cause for optimism you would expect to see a continuation of this at least over 2 or 3 weeks then a stabilization and a gradual decrease there after the number of hospital admissions to repeat has gone up roughly the same amount each day suggesting that were not on a fast acceleration at the moment if this is a lasting slowdown it suggests that the government stay at Home Campaign for the shuttered shops the social distancing all of this is working but the scientists warn loosen the restrictions too quickly and all that progress could be wasted. Some of the 750000 people who volunteered to support Health Workers have come from furloughed Companies Easy jet has grounded its entire fleet and stauffer heading to the new hospitals by slightly just the easy jet sometimes and now i mean not your organization i kind of concerns. And im not. One of my. If you know its. The governments chief scientist say it could be 6 months maybe more before the u. K. Returns to anything like normality it will be counting the cost of such a deep and prolonged economic shutdown for a good while longer will reach out on the. Rights of new yorks overrun Health System is getting a lifeline from the u. S. Navy a medical ship has docked in this city to help relieve hospitals as coronavirus cases soar the 1000 bed vessel has 12 operating rooms and will be used to treat patients that do not have the virus clearing much needed beds inside City Hospitals in new york state accounts for almost half of all the countrys confirmed cases carol is on that was at the port in manhattan and says the ship could be needed for months. The last time that this particular floating hospital is called the comfort of the u. S. Navy came here to new york was 3 days after 911 to help with people that were injured then this ship is massive it is about 894 feet or about 275 meters it has 12 operating rooms over 1000. 00 hospital beds inside and it will have about a level 11200. 00 nurses and doctors and staff on it they will be helping here in the coming weeks and perhaps even months in new york city what they are going to use it for is taking patients that do not have coronavirus out of some of the. New york City Hospitals bringing them here to this hospital least some of them to clear out bed space grown a virus patients that are needing urgent care in new york city so just to give you an idea though of how much this is needed and how much still needs to be done according to the new york governor they need about 150000 hospital beds in the coming weeks right now they have about 50000 so theyre short about 100000 hospital beds this ship that you see as big it is it is is only going to have about a 1000 so theyre still short tens of thousands of hospital beds that are needed in this city in the coming weeks to meet what is going to be the peak of the most amount of people coming back to it are going to need urgent care the United States still has the highest number of confirmed virus cases in the world at nearly 850000 President Donald Trump said a new rapid test will come out next week but he hasnt offered any details its a back up the claim National Guidelines such as social distancing have also been extended across america until the end of april while the president has discussed the pandemic with his russian counterpart Vladimir Putins program joining us from los angeles via skype so trying seems to have backed away from his plan to see much of the country return to normal by easter rob. Yet definitely the easter timetable is off the table as it were right now daryn the president saying yesterday as you mentioned that the guidance on social distancing will continue through the end of april the total cases in the United States at the moment according to Johns Hopkins university 148000 confirmed cases 2599 dead waiting for President Trumps Daily Briefing but while we wait up mentioned that he had a conversation with russian president Vladimir Putin according to the white house readout of that the phone call d to read to work on. Efforts joint efforts to combat rotavirus and to get the u. S. Economy started again in relation to the not the u. S. Economy excuse me but the Global Economy in relation to the u. S. Economy the Federal Reserve today announced that according to some of their models thank you oh heres President Trump so lets listen all right from very comfortable here a lot of room and we appreciate you being here yesterday i announced that we would be extending our social distance guidelines through the end of april this is based on modeling the chose the peak in fatalities will not arrive for another 2 weeks the same modeling also shows that by very vigorously following these guidelines we can save more than 1000000 american lives think of that 1000000 american lives our future is in our own hands and the choices and sacrifices we make will determine the fate of this virus and. Really the fate of our victory we will have a great victory we have no other choice every one of us has a role to play in winning this war every Citizen Family and business can make a difference in stopping the virus this is our shared patriotic duty challenging times are ahead for the next 30 days and this is a very vital 30 days were sort of putting it all in the mind this 30 days so important because we have to get back but the more we dedicate ourselves today the more quickly we will emerge on the other side of the crisis and thats the time were waiting for the more we commit ourselves now the sooner we can win the fight and return to our lives and they will be great lives may be better than ever today we reached a historic milestone in our war against the. Coronavirus over 1000000 americans have now been tested more than any other country by far not even close and tested accurately and i think what id like to do is ask secretary is are is that if in testing job to come up and just say if you are its about the fact that we reached substantially now more than 1000000 tests please thank you alex. Well thank you mr president for your leadership in marshalling all the resources that we have for this unprecedented testing effort and thank you mr Vice President for leading a whole of economy approach to testing as the president mentioned today the United States hit more than 1000000 samples tested a number that no other country has reached were now testing nearly 100000 samples a day also a level that no other country has reached i want to thank every partner that has been involved in this effort that includes all of the men and women of the f. D. A. And the c. D. C. Including director redfield and commissioner hahn together the f. D. A. And c. D. C. Of work to balance the need for testing on an aggressive scale with the scientific rigor rigor that americans expect. Working with our Testing Coordinator amrozi or while they have now truly unleashed the ingenuity of the private sector in our state and local leaders the centerpieces of americas historic approach to testing i want to thank those state and local leaders who have used their on the Ground Resources and knowledge to lead testing and make it much more easily accessible to the americans who need it im also grateful to fema with whom we are now working closely to get state and local partners what they need i also want to thank c. M. S. Where administrator vermin has Given Health Care providers unprecedented flexibility to scale up capacity for testing and treatment that is insure the tests will be paid for finally we would not be where we are today without the Many AmericanCompanies Entrepreneurs and scientists who have worked day and night to develop as of today 20 different emergency testing options with the f. D. A. Responding to requests for authorization to put typically within 24 hours the number of options is growing nearly every day f. D. A. Has also opened up new options for using the available to us like self swapping and new options for reagents i also want to thank f. D. A. And other components of h. H. S. For incredibly rapid action on other tools that we need. This weekend we actually work to secure 30000000 tablets from sandoz and 1000000 tablets from bayer of hydrox of couric when and chloroquine which are potential covert 1000 treatments and we authorized the battels new decamped decontamination machines which can each sterilize thousands of essential and 95 mass for reuse every day so thank you mr president for your leadership and thank you to everybody whos played a part in getting us where we are today thank you thank you. Id like to ask dr honda come up f. D. A. Because we have some really good stuff 1st of all the numbers have been incredible on testing but in the days ahead were going to go even faster and we have something from abbott labs which is right here and thats a 5 minute test highly accurate and i maybe can show that as we listen to our f. D. A. Commissioner the job is done in the approval process we talked about the. Clerk when in the hydroxy clerk when just now i thought that id mention it but alex has already done that but we have that now under test with 1100 people in new york and it was only the fast approval by f. D. A. That allowed us to do that it was a really rapid approval and dr please if your words and this is the 1st one on the line of the 5 minute test im happy. Thank you mr president for your leadership thank you mr Vice President for your leadership of the task force. Im very proud of f. D. A. Staff work in the last few months to expedite the availability of testing in this country im also incredibly appreciative of private industries ingenuity and willingness to work with us quickly to develop and distribute those tests weve had a substantial addition to testing with the authorization of point of care test especially the abbott point of care test which the president has pulled out of the box. Point of certes the test that gives your result where youre getting care this is truly a patient centered approach whether its the Doctors Office a hospital an emergency room an Urgent Care Center or a drive by testing say. Just like tests for flu or strap we go to the doctors you get the test done you can get an answer within minutes of having this test done now with those tests being approved for abbott and for others these are available around the country theyre planning to scale up the number of tests that can be put out throughout the country over the next month and patients can get the answer within as little as 15 to 5 minutes and then of course an appropriate plan a treatment can be given. That we had up here working quickly with abbott as well and other testing approaches and normally these tests take months to develop i was on the phone today with the ad c. E. O. He told me that normally this is a 9 to 12 month approach to developing a point of care test they did this in collaboration with f. D. A. And Us Government within weeks. Advertise shared that they will be delivering these test tomorrow and then well be ramping up just to emphasize one thing the most innovative unsafe products come from the private sector in partnership with government taking in all hands on deck approach just like in this case and the other point here is that abbott nastia Work Together to make sure that we had a fast reliable and accurate test to market thank you. Really great job thank you steve. So. The Pharmaceutical Company send us has been working with us very closely and as alex mentioned a little bit 30000000 doses of the hydroxy. To the United States government has been given and bearer has donated 1000000 doses of the chloroquine. Which will soon be distributed to states and state Health Officials around the country tara tev of pharmaceuticals is also donating 6000000. 00 doses of hydroxy clerk women to u. S. Hospitals 6000000. 00 doses so the private sector is youd say steve its been amazing whats happened really amazing. And were going to introduce you to some of the greatest Business Executives in the world today no matter where you go and theyre going to say a little bit about what theyre doing and then we have so many more the f. D. A. Is also authorized the materials. N 95 respirator mask sterilization kits its an incredible thing ive been asking why are we throwing these masks away you look at some of these masks and theyre significant pieces of equipment and i say how come you throw them away why arent they using sterilization techniques and i got a call from mike de wine the governor of ohio and hes a tremendous guy tremendous governor and he said we have a company name but deal and they have a hard time getting approval from the f. D. A. And i called up. Dr hahn and within a very short period of time they got the approval steve we really appreciate i want to thank mike and i want to thank steve and theyre going to be able each machine now can disinfect 120000. 00 masks per day and i think of that each machine can disinfect 120000. 00 masks per day itll be just like a new one it could go up to about 20 times for each basket so each basket go through this process 20 times and they have to in ohio one in new york and one will soon be shipped to Seattle Washington and also to washington d. C. So thats going to make a tremendous difference on the masks this morning i spoke to our nations governors to help each state get the medical supplies they need and yesterday Vice President mike pence asked our nations hospitals to begin reporting total bed capacity i. C. U. Bed capacity Ventilator Capacity and vital medical supply levels on a daily basis and mike thank you for the great thank you very much in new york the 2900 bed hospital under construction which is now completed they completed it in 3 days you might say 3 and a half days at the javits center. Will be completed today will be and when you look so theyre going up i think were going to be adding some more beds which will be completed today and weve opened up with cigar box. And my has blown around. And its my. One thing you can get away with a visit is you got a problem if youre president. A nearly 3000 medical beds will become operational the u. S. Navy ship comfort also arrived today equipped with 12 operating rooms in 1000 hospital beds work has begun on additional temporary hospital sites including a 600 bed capacity nursing home facility in brooklyn and numerous floors of a high rise building on wall street so its been really Pretty Amazing what theyve done the army corps of engineers what theyve done theyve done they they just completed think of it a 2900 bed hospital in new york in just about 3 days maybe 4 days and the whole citys talking about it on top of that weve flown it in a great ship which is going to be a 1000 rooms which is being used for patients outside of what were focused on and that will free up a lot of rooms for what were focused on so its been great the army corps of engineers has awarded contracts for the construction of alternate care facilities also at the State University at stony brook State University old westbury and the Westchester Community center were sending 60 ambulances to new york city today we have a total of 60 were getting some additional ones with up to 190. 00 more to follow at different locations to date fema has obligated more than 1300000 dollars 1000000000 dollars in federal support to the state of new york so were spending a lot of money in new york its a hot its a hotbed theres no question about it and were spending a lot of time effort in new york to jersey spoke with Governor Cuomo a lot spoke with governor murphy how a lot in new jersey and where are. Were really getting the job done people are very impressed and im very impressed by the people in fema the people in the army corps of engineers because what theyve done ive never seen anybody do anything like it in addition to the 8100 ventilators that weve already delivered over the next 48 hours were delivering more than 1000 were going 400 ventilators are going to michigan very shortly 300 going to new jersey 150 ventilators to illinois 150 to louisiana and 50 to connecticut fema and h. H. S. Already delivered 11600000 and 95 respirators 26000000 surgical masts 5300000 face shields 4400000 surgical ganz and 22000000 gloves and i dont know if you just saw it just came over the wires that for Just Announced just a little while ago that they will produce along with General Electric health care 50000. 00 ventilators and theyre going to be doing it in less than 100. 00 days and top of that we have other companies that are doing ventilate isnt polluting General Motors but we have 9 other companies doing ventilators as we outpace what we need were going to be sending them to italy were going to be sending them to france were going to be sending them to spain where they have tremendous problems and other countries as we as we can but the fact that were doing so many so quickly is a tribute to our Great Companies more than 14000 National Guard members have been activated. And can help supplement state and local efforts to distribute personal protective equipment where were sending a lot we have plane loads coming in. We have 51 loads from various locations all around the world and theyre landing we had our 1st big cargo plane land this morning and were getting it from all over the world and were also sending things that we dont need to other parts i just spoke to the Prime Minister of italy and we have additional capacity we have additional product that we dont need were going to be sending approximately 100000000. 00 worth of of things of surgical and medical and hospital things to italy and giuseppe was very very happy. To have a very hard time joining us this afternoon are c. E. O. s of the great American Companies that are fulfilling their patriotic duty by producing or donating medical equipment to help meet our most urgent needs what theyre doing is incredible and to a Great Companies dariya us dom check of honeywell you know that and areas has been. Somebody that ive dealt with in the past and hes a great leader of a Great CompanyDeborah Waller of Jockey International a friend of mine mike lindela my pillow boy do you sell those pillows its unbelievable what you do David Taylor Procter and gamble and greg hayes of United Technologies corporation and i just want to tell all of you that america is very grateful to you and what youve done amazing job youve done and we thank you very much id like you to come up and say a couple of words if you might back you Companies Might come on up come on up fellas place come on up. Does it would you if youre just joining us on aljazeera youve been we have been listening to President Donald Trump giving his daily News Conference on the coronavirus pandemic let me just run through some of the headlines with you so far what he said is that following these social distancing guidelines that hes now extended until the end of april then america can save over 1000000 lives he also did say that these are challenging times ahead for the next 30 days and on the subject of testing President Trump said that over 1000000 americans have been tested so far for their coronavirus so well keep an eye out on that press conference and well bring you all the latest lines from there in the meantime were going to bring in rob runnels hes joining us from l. A. Rob you were listening to what President Trump had to say in the focus seemed to be a lot at least the 1st the beginning part of when he started to speak was about this testing. Yeah thats right very he said that the testing kits are are coming off the Assembly Line in huge numbers but oddly enough on a Conference Call with the nations governors earlier on. Monday the president from said that he hadnt heard anything about testing for weeks implying that it was no longer d a problem no testing is really useful in the early stages of a disease outbreak that means when there are fewer people who have been infected and you can identify them using tests you can then trace all of their contacts quarantine all those people isolate them and keep it from spreading once there is 150000 for cases as and presumably a lot more people carrying the Virus Testing is of less utility you dont get better if you get tested it doesnt have any there are pubic so just having more tests while thats a good thing is not going to necessarily stop the spread of the virus now that its reached this stage there was a crucial lack of good tests in the country for weeks and weeks at the outset of the pandemic and the spread of the virus here in the United States so that is something the president from his now trying to last over you also see here this parade of corporate c. E. O. s getting some of this free advertisement of how well theyre doing and certainly you know its meant that ford and General Electric are going to be producing tens of thousands of ventilators this is very good news and the president reeling off all of these numbers that you heard him its really hard to keep track of the numbers. Items. Hospital beds a mess and so on the. Rest of us but of course remind you so that is something that. Its not an exceptionally wonderful thing that the government is providing these materials that the governments job so this is in a way. Sort of the a lot of so gradually. I think well go back to this press conference shortly yeah we will rob as soon as we hear the president start to speak again for the time being well let you go for now thanks very much rob and well just tell you about a new study from Harvard University in the u. S. Which is now offering a hint at how long social distancing could last so transmission of the virus can be cut up cut by up to 60 percent when measures such as travel restrictions and orders to stay at home are imposed if those rules are kept in place from 25 to 75 percent of the time then Health Systems can operate within capacity while the developed countries population can start to build immunity and finding genuine cases of coven 1000 quicker in tracing them could change this ask a vaccine but thats 12 to 18 months away at best and the research a say that with an increase in Health Care Capacity then social distancing could end in the u. S. In the middle of next year with the epidemic declared over in 2022 lets not bring in Daniel Aldrich hes the director of the security and Resilience Program in Northeastern University hes joining us via skype from boston thanks very much for speaking to us on aljazeera so id really like to get your take on that particular harvard study that i was just citing in a moment but since the president is still speaking over in washington at the white house hes said this that as you know hes extended the timeline for social distancing guidelines he says that it will save a 1000000 americans in your opinion has this method been slowing down the spread in the u. S. If physical distancing is the best thing the average person can do right now given that the biggest burden will be facing will be on the Health Care System itself both in terms of capacity that we have an awesome terms of experience and also still it is there are available but for the average person right now yes if we can keep from each other stay at home dont leave the house and its emergency to go shopping thats one of the best plans that each one of us can do at home and this particular harvard study that i was citing just a moment ago seems to suggest that that is sort of a staggered pattern of social distancing so on again off again would save more lives than it would also avoid overwhelming the Health Care Systems in the hospitals is that a good option. So most countries havent tried this staggering approach most of us are still on the across the board stay in place order with were talking about right now italy or japan singapore hong kong or north america some countries like sweden have tried to staggered approach we havent seen yet that big spike which usually comes about 100 days after the 1st cases go into a country i think from my perspective honestly the broader stay in place order would be the best thing to stick with right now until we have more data its true we have now more tests available which will certainly help us pinpoint who has and doesnt have the disease but we also have a recognition that for every one of us Walking Around going to work going onto a bus going to a restaurant its a chance to infect 3. 00 to 5. 00 other people within a few hours and of course those people themselves infect 3 to 5 other people so that spreading unfortunately is quite easy with covert 19 the best defense remains staying at home i hear what youre saying but what they also as also seem to argue is that you know these strict social distancing measures were put in place in china for example but theres little evidence that the population has developed immunity. This is true and again we dont know a lot about 1000 yet its hard to imagine how ignorant we are really as as doctors and nations we have a lot to do and china can also enforce that stay at home rule much more effectively the north american authorities can for example literally into one for example people welded into apartment complexes that level of surveillance that level of coercion really isnt possible here in north america but again for you seeing right now is beyond the physical distancing were talking about is a broader attempt i think in north america that has come from the bottom to keep people connected socially and i think for me the side coined to beyond physical distancing is needs to connected socially as well. Brings me to my next question in fact so what are the sort of long term consequences that you can think of when it comes to self isolation and the lack of social connection yes we have a lot of data actually from past pandemics and also events like the fukushima meltdowns in japan people had to lock themselves that in literally for months if not years there are some pretty severe side effects for individuals who cannot go out or interact with people we know things like depression and typically rise anxiety as well a divorce rates tend to spike within 3 months to 6 months after that isolation begins with the family we also can see people who had symptoms of p. T. S. D. Those usually get worse so if we really practice what were calling right now social distancing i think that would be a mistake a better term that were using now coming from both our own research in our lab and also w. H. O. Is physical distancing meaning that we try to maintain those social ties keep to in contact with neighbors and friends whatever methods we can notes radio programs the computer but at the same time staying as far apart as were able to to keep that distance from spreading yeah good point danielle threats final question to you when do you think were going to be able to get back to normal. In north america at least i would imagine not before august of this year and we have some models pushing that even further into august or september so it will be a few more months unfortunately i think of this kind of physical distancing all right well have to leave it there we thank you very much danny alter it for speaking to us from boston thank you. All Drug Companies and universities around the world have dropped other work to concentrate on the search for a vaccine thats a toss that normally takes years but there are plans for human trials within just months if barker reports from london. Scientists are at war with covert 19 dozens of laboratories are now battlegrounds in the race for a vaccine here at Oxford University volunteers blood samples are prepared for testing ahead of the 1st human trials of a vaccine the blood will be checked for antibodies in any t. V. Cell responds to the virus t. Cells can recognize and destroy infected cells. And here in germany warm Small Company part funded by microsoft billionaire bill gates says it too will soon have a vaccine ready for human trials it may look like slow work but things are moving at breakneck speed it can take decades to develop a vaccine this lab wants one who much sooner people are saying well that. 18 months of course its a much much shorter normal development for fiction is that. Even 20 years. This is the enemy corona means crowd in latin named because of the spikes on the virus his outer coat this crown is also its weakness the vaccines under development to contain the genetic sequence of this surface spike which primes the amine system to attack the virus if it later infects the body but what about those most at risk of contracting the virus symptoms can range from a runny nose to a sore throat to a fever but it can escalate quickly among people with respiratory problems or Underlying Health issues its a full blown pneumonia one team of british scientists believes are best line of defense lies deep in our lungs. Theyve developed this inhaler to help restore levels of a substance called interferon be tearing peoples lungs vital for removing viruses from the body unhealthy lungs lack interferon peter levels also naturally deplete with age which is why elderly people are more at risk of contracting the virus patients with lung disease diabetes preexisting heart and probably rascalities hes they get the information wants the diary to weeks to increase the viral immunity and to prevent the virus from replicating and eliminating the virus more facts of. The virus has led to an acceleration in engineering this of rapid covert 19 tests has been developed by the german company. A 3 week lockdown has now begun in zimbabwe to prevent the spread of the coronavirus Security Forces have been deployed to enforce the restrictions but there are concerns the countrys Health Sector will struggle to fight the pandemic which also reports from harare. Police in harare blocked major roads as the baba begins a 21 day nationwide lockdown if people cant prove why its essential for them to travel to the city center they are told to go back home so i think maybe those measures. Budget ground in limited government something to do their due. To government revenue and. The spread of the call over. Other countries have also put in place similar measures in varying degrees but zimbabweans living with hyper inflation and high unemployment worry that closing down markets and nonessential businesses will mean less cash for millions already struggling. To raise. Even 1. 00 to 2. 00 of us. On day one of the lock down harare streets were largely deserted Health Officials say they are ready to minimise the impact of the outbreak should they be more infections are now only transferred operatives from the state are allowed to work or they are needed for people who are in a Financial Services the government has also called borders and banned large gatherings. Pharmacies fuel stations and supermarkets can stay open jaring the 3 week lockdown but daily water fuel and Food Shortages need queuing for hours looking for basic commodities practicing coronavirus prevention methods such as social distancing is nearly impossible for many its a dilemma between hitting out to provide for their family or staying at home. Portugal says all migrants who have applied for residency will be treated as permanent citizens from monday it will give them access to the countrys Public Services including health care with the status lasting until at least july the countrys government hopes that minimizing contact between border staff and applicants will stop the virus from spreading portugal has reported more than 6000 cases and 140 deaths but speak to get real or ferreyra shes the founder and president of lisbon project thats a group which helps the local community organize help for migrants and refugees she dont shes joining us via skype from lisbon thanks for speaking to us on aljazeera so what are the local communities make of this decision by the government hi good evening thank you as someone who works closely with the migrant population what this decision taken by the government comes as a huge relief when critical events like this happen we all suffer but those who are already vulnerable before will suffer the most and so this measure taken by our government is definitely a positive step forward that will hopefully guarantee access to immediate financial and Health Care Assistance to thousands i do have some concerns about these measures and about how they will work in practice number one being how will this information about the the different right that they now are able to access how will this information reach migrants and refugees who are isolated in their homes who dont speak the language who have limited access to internet how will they know what im hearing from the government or perhaps those people that you work with about how the government is actually going to ensure that the refugees and migrants will have knowledge will have the knowledge to get access to these Public Health services. Yes so far we have we have no information that theyre using at institutions like ours who have access to migrants and refugees to transmit this information to them but until now we havent been told anything and just for clarity. Suppose its important to know to note that this is a temporary decision and the migrants of refugees are in fact not granted. Theyre being granted asylum or theyre not being granted asylum or residency excuse me and this is once again just a temporary decision but what services will they actually have access to. Most importantly health care so theyll have 3 health care as any other citizen would have and Social Security benefits. All right so well have to leave it there we thank you very much gabriela for speaking to us from lisbon thank you and were taking you back to the u. S. And to the white house President Trump is getting his daily Coronavirus Briefing and hes answering questions from reporters lets listen in saying we may get a few more but the guidelines will be very much as they are maybe even toughened up a little bit but the having a big impact theyre having a tremendous impact and were starting to see it and thats the key were starting to see the impact that theyre having it if i could ask you to talk about ford now ramping up production of ventilators the government is sending thousands of ventilators across the country are clearly the supply is increasing but when you look at the production curve against the hospitalisation curve can you guarantee that everyone who needs a ventilator in the next few weeks will be able to get one well i think that some are repping up to a level that theyre not going to have to john and i think that we also have kept in reserve we have almost 10000 ventilators. In our line we have them weve held back just because we did the stockpile we didnt want to give them because we dont know where the emergency this hits its like so fast it comes so quickly and we have 10000 were probably going to send some of them now weve been sending a lot to michigan and various other states will probably send some additional ones to michigan new yorks been doing very well but we can add some more to new york were heading into the areas that are having a problem even alabama all of a sudden flared up a little bit as you saw over the last couple of days and well send them down to alabama so we have 10000 we kept them for this very specific purpose it sounds like a lot but its not when you think about it but were making a lot and when you see it talking about hundreds of thousands being made in a very short period of time because if you look at what just so we have now 10 companies at least making the ventilators and we say. Go ahead because honestly other countries really dont never be able to do it its a very complex piece of equipment and its its big and expensive do you believe us as we approach this peak in a couple of weeks that there will be enough for the american pie to 6 yes i do think so. I think were going to be in very good shape and we had a great call today with the governors and they were i actually said i hope that the media is listening to this call because it was a really good call and that was randomly selected largely. Democrats and republicans and there. I think for the most part they were saying thank you for doing a great job and we discussed that at the end of the call so really people are very happy with what were doing now the circumstances are so terrible because of whats going on but i think theyre very impressed by the federal government i watched that beautiful ship floating in today into you know weeks ahead of schedule almost 4 weeks ahead of schedule into new york harbor comfort and i watched the mersey floating in to los angeles a week ago almost a week ago and they are stocked they are really ready to go this stocked with both talent and tremendous amounts of equipment and the navy and everybody else involved they got it ready so fast its just incredible what they can do theyve geared up thats why i mean i am so impressed by the people involved mike and i were talking about it before the level of genius to put it all together so quickly this wasnt a month ago nobody ever heard of this nobody had any idea the mersey was being maintained it was in maintenance for a month. And when they heard we needed it and i was surprise they said sir were ready to go i said what i mean youre not going to be ready for 3 weeks no sir were all ready to go was incredible so and weve had many instances like this i think the building of the hospital 2900 beds in. A matter of days a few days is just incredible Governor Cuomo was impressed and gavin newsom was impressed by what weve been doing with gavin in. California in Los Angeles Area in particular but really said francisco all over all over california when you look at what were doing with michigan were getting along very well with michigans great great place were sending a lot of things to michigan because its becoming a hotbed especially specific area as you know its become very hot its become. I dont know could even at some point supersede but its got to be taken care of so where are. The relationship we have with the governors i just wish you could because we took a lot of calls from a lot of different states and i wish you could have heard even a thing where like the governor of ohio calls where he has a company that does the sterilization but they have a problem because its not going quickly at the f. D. A. And i call up steve and steve comes that and he said well get it done and they checked it and they got it done almost immediately and originally they were proving it for 10000 masks and then it was supposed to be for 80 and they ultimately approved 4120000 its a tremendous number and i kept wondering why are they sterilizing these wrestlers i assume maybe you couldnt do it but then id look at them and theyd look like you know its not cloth its something that looks like it could be sterilized and thats what theyve done and thats is that he the machine that is over there actually they have a piece of the machine over there i wont bother showing it to you and this is incredible when you talk about 5 minutes 15 minutes and highly accurate and not nearly as disturbing to do as the other test so weve just gotten better were doing things that nobody else ever thought of place. He has issued state orders that governor route Northern Virginia took it pretty far he issued a 70 day stay at home order is that constitutional 1st all and secondly do you think its warranted to go ahead and issued a 70 day guidance at this point well were letting the governors do in their states pretty much what they want with our supervision and they consult with us in all cases some go further than others as you know i mean i could give you plenty of examples but im not going to do that because we never want to be controversial but some of the governors have taken it a step further. And people are questioning people are questioning that but look staying at home with respect to what were talking about doesnt bother me at all people should be staying at home thats what we want a way in place. You know 1405 americans have died from carnival iris in the last 60 days meanwhile you have t. 1369 children who are killed by their mothers through elective abortions each day thats 16 and a half 1000 children killed every week 2 states have suspended elective abortion to make more Resources Available for coronavirus cases thats texas and ohio do you agree with states who are placing coronavirus victims above 9 elective abortions and should more states be doing the same what i think what were doing is were trying to as a Group Governors and thats republicans and democrats that were just working together to solve this problem thats been a what youre mentioning has been your going for a long time and its a its a said event lot of said events in this country but what were doing is theyre working on the virus were working on that had never me and i think were doing a great job as good a job as you could possibly do when. When tony and deborah came up with numbers yesterday to say that if we did nothing you could lose 2. 2 up to 2 point maybe beyond that or maybe beyond but 2200000 people if we did nothing and i can tell you what the unfortunate final toll is going to be but its going to be a very small fraction of that so were doing an awfully good job i think with what were doing please go ahead i am pleased. Are you considering it all a nationwide stay at home order i know theres a lot of states that have put them in place but some have and i was wondering if you were considering some sort of broad set homeowner and they have a question for dr burke. Well weve talked about it we. Know there are obviously there are some parts of the of the country that nerve in far deeper trouble than others or other parts that frankly are not in trouble at all so plea hopefully were going to be able to keep it that way by doing what were doing. So we talked about quarantine as you know the other day a group came to me and they wanted to do the quarantine and i said lets think about it and we did it we studied it in by the time the evening came it just was something that was very unwieldy very tough to enforce and something we didnt want to do. But we did advisory and i think thats doing well i mean i see i look at the streets you look at new york where theres a look down 5th avenue today they were showing a shot of if they havent you had sort of prime time when there was almost nobody on 5th avenue ive never seen that before there was no car there was no anything so i think the people of this country have done an incredible job if we do that we will let you know but its pretty unlikely i would think at this time ok its a quick question for dr. So dr parks we dont mind you had mentioned today that this model that predicts 100000 deaths is if we do things almost perfectly so i want to know are we currently doing things almost perfectly or are there more things we need to be doing to tap you know to to not exceed that 100200000 model. Police. Thank you i think thats a really great question and tomorrow well go through all of the graphs and all the information that we took to the president for the decision but when you and i just want to thank the data team thats working day and night to get i mean i usually get my data about 2 am from them and they assimilate all the data from all the states and when you look at all of the states together all of them are moving in exactly the same curves and so thats why we really believe this needs to be federal guidance so that every state understands that it may look like 2 cases today that become 20 that become 200 that become 2000 and thats what were trying to prevent and i think states still have that opportunity but theyre going to have to do all of these recommended and these recommendations are recommendations that the globe is using and so we really do recommend that every governor every mayor looks very carefully and ensures that their communities are utilizing these guidance. Which. It is amazing you look at louisiana for a long time it was just it was just saying nothing and then all of a sudden a look one day and i see a lot and a lot and a lot and then it explodes and now were working very carefully and very powerfully with and were building hospitals who are building a lot of Different Things for louisiana so its very important place. This could be it sees no seasonal cyclical virus so in maybe both of you could comment on this and dr burks as well are you prepared for this to strike again say in the fall all the efforts that are taking place right now to contain this to be proactive and youd libertarian i hope it doesnt happen dr would you like to Say Something about that i hope it doesnt happen but were certainly progress. In fact i would insist the pay that that would actually happen because of the greed of transmissibility however if you come back in the fall it will be a totally different ballgame of what happened when we 1st got hit with it in the beginning of this year there will be several things that have be different our ability to go out and be able to test identify isolate and context race will be orders of magnitude better than what it was just a couple of months ago in addition we have a number of Clinical Trials that a look get a variety of therapeutic interventions we hope one of more of them will be available and importantly as i mentioned to you many times at these briefings is that we have a vaccine thats on track and multiple of the candidates so i would intice a pate that you know a year a year and a half would be able to do it on their own emergency use if we start seeing an efficacy signal we may be able to even use a vaccine at the next season so things are going to be very very different what were going through now is going to be more than just Lessons Learned its going to be things that we have available to us that we did not have before. Ok please. Scott thank you Scott Gottlieb your former f. D. A. Commissioner wrote a roadmap for recovery after a run and i honestly i said he suggests at the the right not to suggest that everybody where a mask in public is that something that the task force thinks is a good idea we havent discussed it to that extent but its certainly something we could discuss were getting certainly the number of masks that you need. We are in the process of talking about things i see
