Of alabama just to make it clear thats all on the east coast of the United States and early results show that former Vice President joe biden has taken the state of virginia lets go a little bit up further to vermont right there of that is for Bernie Sanders is the sitting senator since 2007 been a member of caught represented in Congress Since 1901 yes he is also going to win his home state so by this projected to win at least 16 of the 99 delegates that are up for grabs in virginia you win a state but you dont get all of the delegates allocated proportionately so right now this is where the number stand joe biden is leading with 69 delegates actually ahead of Bernie Sanders this may or may not last but thats actually the 1st time this has happened since we all began this a few weeks ago Bernie Sanders and 68 and the senator from massachusetts Elizabeth Warren right now its 8 delegates the magic number they need to get to is 1991 not tonight there are still many more contests but overall when all is said and done the goal is 1991 all right daryn back to you all right michelle thank you very much for that all right so polls in North Carolina have just closed john hendren is live for us there now hes at a polling station in charlotte so john were hearing that polls a just close down but there was a delay will happen. Thats right daryn we understand that at one polling place there was a delay there were enough ballots and so theyre extending the hours of that particular place so that all those people have been waiting to complete their voting but at the other stations like this one here its close these are the finally voters that you see over my shoulder they have been allowed in the door but that door is closed and locked nobody else from coming here and that means that they will begin tallying the votes here right now and let me tell you why joe biden hopes that this is a good night for him so a few days ago he won decisively in South Carolina just to the south of here just now you heard michelle announce hes winning virginia just to the north of here in a very similar way North Carolina has significant africanamerican population joe biden tends to do well with africanamericans according to exit polls 25 percent of those who voted in virginia and in North Carolina were africanamericans however North Carolina is also a more educated state in many ways than South Carolina a lot of universities and that tends to increase the number of Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren voters you get bottom line we dont know whats going to happen but the trend for joe biden is good he was polling ahead in this state but there is the x. Factor of Mike Bloomberg youll hear crist and salumi talk about that a little bit later but he could throw a Monkey Wrench in this whole system there are 5 candidates left in this race and when you pick up a ballot here in North Carolina and elsewhere you see 15 Democratic Candidates 10 of them have dropped out of the race are going to be a lot of people who sent in early ballots possibly even some who voted here on super tuesday her to be voting for people who are no longer in the race but what is left is 5 candidates if you take away to seek average whos getting in the Single Digits you have for white candidates over 70 years d old 2 of them are moderates. 2 of them are liberals thats pretty thin enders and Elizabeth Warren on the on the left and joe biden and Michael Bloomberg in the center so its becoming something of a fair fight but sanders and biden hope that by the end of the night this is a 2 person race and biden seen good signs or early on but because you had pete to jamie close which are drop out in late days in the recent days none of the polls that weve been looking at before these election are really reliable so nobody really knows whats going to happen are there john hendren there live for us in charlotte North Carolina john thank you well talk to a little bit later lets talk about some of the issues again health care one of the top issues of voters this election and some democratic hopefuls have been on veiling ambitious plans on the campaign trail. During the 1st week of our presidency we are going to introduce the legislation that will bring medicare for all i have a plan that shows how we can have medicare for all without raising taxes one cent on middle class families and its all fully paid for by asking the top one percent and giant corporations to pay your fair share no family will pay more than 8. 5 percent of their income in any circumstances for health care. Were not. Were not going to raise those calculations john the cheapest possible plan out there always come up to a panel now joining sunset joseph an assistant professor of Political Science at texas and university. We also got just in. From jonathan professor in residence at Northwestern University in concert and of course i want to show our senior political analyst here at aljazeera laughs all around from the panel. To watch well at least theres a bit to start with you North Carolina interesting is that a 110. 00 democrat delegates up for grabs you wanted to Say Something about the thing that strikes me as particular so a lot of the states that are voting tonight california texas vermont are not likely to be especially competitive in the general election North Carolina is different donald trump won North Carolina by 3 or 4 percent last time which is probably a bigger margin of victory there than we would have thought and for to see which democrat there can have the most appeal in that state and in particular is sort of more data comes in and be able to see it was joe biden when there particularly because he won among the Traditional Democratic constituencies was a black voters was it was it union voters or did he make inroads in constituencies like the. A large suburban areas the you know the charlotte suburbs you know the area between raleigh and chapel hill where theres a lot of universities a Higher EducationHealth Care Industries a very prominent and if if biden has been competitive in those places in particular that could signal strength in a general election and putting states like North Carolina in play you know maintaining the democratic edge in minnesota and maybe even in a similar state like wisconsin where theres Higher Education in health care in you know sort of mirrors North Carolina in some key ways that that might be important show strength in those new battleground states just as you want to talk with you about perhaps a bit of north kind of a bit more about the genea and the demographics there on board that is well you know joe brought up a really important point about. Pivoting from this primary to the general election and and not only looking at who wins these states but how do they win these these these states it was interesting to hear our correspondent in charlotte North Carolina mention that right now the exit polling which is not always 100 percent accurate but that the exit polling showed about a 25 percent black vote in the democratic primary right now in North Carolina thats actually support but surprisingly low. Previously the demographics have been about a 3rd of the of the democratic primary voters in North Carolina are black and so were going to have to watch and see if biden still performs at or even above say his polling numbers in North Carolina because if he does that hes done that even with less a black vote than he was expecting and that would bode well for him in the general election all right lets just lets bring in my one here before going back to resell for some more results i know weve sort of talked down the show Foreign Policy as being not so important in terms of the sort of national and domestic issues in the u. S. But let me get one more issue about Foreign Policy. From yuma one any democrat going up against the jewish lobby and a pac is considered to be committing political suicide arent they why did Bernie Sanders feel so confident about going up against a pac and israeli Prime Minister binyamin it because america is a work in progress and and and the young generation america thinks differently from the old generation and within the democrat the Democratic Party theres a new generation that is free from the false foods and the cliches of the past and is basically charting has its own way and on the question of israel 51 percent of americans think the netanyahu government isnt good for america. In fact 6 or 7 or 6 or 7 percent of all democrats dont think the netanyahu government is good for america so in a sense win win. When Bernie Sanders accused Prime Minister of the now of racism he found that he actually was climbing in the pool suddenly this was no longer a political suicide it was a political asset to be attacking someone Like Netanyahu and the powerful jewish establishment in a fight it is in the jewish lobby and when he called the jewish lobby it bigoted he even was more in the polls so one could say that within the Democratic Party and generally in the United States a new generation of americans things differently about israel thinks differently about social democracy thinks differently about health care provided by the state and sold so forth and the new generation the one that voted for Hillary Clinton and the new generation now that is voting for Bernie Sanders do think differently they dont think when you when you say socialism will they dont think of poor russians what they think about is denmark what they think about this europe and i and for me as someone who lived equally between the United States and europe im telling you europeans are amazed that such a rich country like the United States cannot provide health care for all its justin you want to Say Something yeah. I think this is a really interesting thing to think about vic power of the apac lobby right we think it really is interesting that we have a candidate who may be the 1st jewish candidate for you know nomination for for the presidency but we have to differentiate that from the lobby. You know Bernie Sanders was asked specifically about his judaism in one of the one of the most recent debates and he made a very clear distinction between being proud of his of his religion but completely you know on the palestinian side and caring about the human rights of the palestinians that is that is an understanding an argument that makes sense to a lot of americans and especially a lot of people in the Democratic Party and also just want to mention that the apac lobby is one lobby that supposedly represents israeli interests israeli american interests together but we do have other lobbies to represent jewish voice for example j. Street is another lobby that considers itself to be a pro israel and pro palestinian voice where Many American jews particularly those who find themselves voting democrat like to put their time and effort into because they also believe in a 2 state solution and fair and equal treatment for the palestinians just whats your take on the jewish lobby them well. Israelis have strong bipartisan support in american politics and there are a number of issues where things that used to be bipartisan have become divided across the parties and i think in particular over the last 3 or 4 years as theres been an alliance between President Trump and Prime Minister netanyahu to take a very aggressive stance there to move the American Embassy to jerusalem to sort of unilaterally put out a peace plan that is very. Favorable towards israel that sort of moves the baseline in american politics and way and taken something in which the parties agreed and sort of basic support for Israeli Security in sort of a defined kind of moderate position on how to resolve the Israeli Palestinian conflict and sort of change that into where theres now a republican position that is much more aggressive and democratic position that is much more. Open to reconsidering the palestinian point of view in american politics and as thats polarized i think you do see differences emerging on an issue in which the 2 parties were quite united even a reasonably short time ago. And were still waiting on some results from michelle and while we get those graphic stacks sorted out lets just lets just in fact we can go to kristen salumi shes been monitoring voting for us in massachusetts the home of senator Elizabeth Warren christens also watching the Mike Bloomberg campaign from an event in florida and joins us from West Palm Beach look if Elizabeth Warren doesnt win in massachusetts where can she win. Movies yeah thats a really good question and thats a crucial state for her home state but shes been running neck and neck in the polls or were going to sanders and Mike Bloomberg whos headquarters out on her im out right now i was polling a 3rd going mention that today in massachusetts speaking out looking for those moderate voters. But also looking at joe biden so Elizabeth Warren certainly massachusetts very crucial for her just from an optics perspective but she cant win her home state will be happy at heart for valentines day was he on super tuesday shes already announced her schedule for the coming week but her question for her. All right so on to a disappointing Michael Bloomberg i mean this is this is the 1st time officially on the primary ballots where if anywhere then does he stand a chance of picking up ballots that. You. Know. Yes hes skipped the 1st 4 contests focusing instead on super tuesday were so many delegates alive for grabs its a strategy that never works before theres never been a candidate willing to spend a half a 1000000000. 00 of his own money to drive. So hes hasnt got out he has acknowledged that its possible he doesnt win here any states today but hes looking to do quality not to get some delegates to stay in the race to have bargaining potentially if you will Going Forward to the convention where he night helps well hes pretty much that the only way he sees winning is through a contested convention that means that theres not a majority of voters. The sounds of negotiation at the end and thats where you think he might do well here in florida theres a big disaster crowd come out for him and he was holding his. Super tuesday event in florida even though florida isnt voting today as. Sign of just how important what state is she having to take you there wasnt she the elections in general its a swing state known for more moderate voters Bernie Sanders has not polled well yeah Mike Bloomberg was doing very well in florida until his 1st to bait and switch that him was equal here tonight do you think hes really the best moderate in the race to take on president chop and thats what theyre looking for a late night youre one person told me read a manager thats exactly how Mike Bloomberg has been marketing himself as someone whos an executive branch in new york city ran his own business was able was a dog was to was lead here hoping that he does well enough today to carry on to the next races and get that salary was was a thank you that was a big success to have was in my book i talk personally that watching events. But Campaign Event in fraud lets get some more results out from ourselves. All right thank you very much terence so the latest that we have an issue had mentioned there were some issues with some of the polling places in North Carolina but the polls have now closed and the Vice President or Vice President joe biden is projected to be the winner there 110. 00 delegates at stake there and thats a pretty sizable number he doesnt get all of that but still he will get a sizable chunk of those 110. 00 delegates hell take a look now at where everyone stands with the delegate total so far tonight again the number to get the nomination is 1991 joe biden is at 116 the biggest ladies ever had over a Bernie Sanders who is it 80 Elizabeth Warren is 8 but it is very very early for covering 14 states and American Samoa so if the numbers continue to come in and they change we will keep you up to date on the tracker all right well talk to you in a few minutes meaghan let me just bring you back in here because interesting when you were talking about Elizabeth Warren the. Optics is all important isnt it if she cant win massachusetts where can she win i know where i think that was or thought it was i would take it as a thought of course that because even if she did you know win whatever minnesota whatever i dont think thats good enough because if she cant win massachusetts and then of that the texas mistress who sits in california this is more than half of the 13 plus 100. Delegates that we have this super tuesday so really if she doesnt win most issues thats thats what i think why shes staying in the race is for 2 things because she does have a message she is the only woman now in the race and i think maybe shes vying for a vice presidency of sorts i mean she would like eventually to go to the convention and to have weight in the convention but if she loses misuse its going to be very hard to justify why she continues i mean how come pain still think shes a slimline to the convention. Its not possible what would see what happens tonight i mean everything depends on what goes on tonight if if ben your son theres one dont do well then how do we call us as they say in arabic we want to talk about jobs and its all over for ugly things is. What i thought that was an international war. We would be talking about joe biden and i think by that time if if war and and and and said those dont do well they will get with the program they will get behind by then but if they do well then we have more complications were all right lets bring in joseph again even top North Carolina and the results that well i mean doing well for Elizabeth Warren may mean just staying above 15 percent in accumulating delegates and seeing what happens at the convention likewise getting with the program in terms of getting behind biden for her may mean staying in the race and continuing to divide the Progressive Side of the Democratic Party and letting joe biden sort of emerge as the consensus alternative centrist candidate North Carolina as it is just coming in virginia are we have about a 3rd of the precincts reporting just a short or for. That just one second go for you know that this is biden there is not just ahead but in these early returns is you know over 50 percent and really sort of winning not just plurality support but majority support in these larger states with more delegates even more diverse states compared to the ones where Bernie Sanders seems to be most competitive in justins point earlier about not just who is winning but how theyre winning you know theres lots of data parsing of you lots of things to look at going ahead but in early indicators look like joe biden is doing the best in the kinds of ways and in the kinds of places where democrats need to be able to press the most to be able to defeat President Trump in the fall moment quickly before we go to just and very quickly just to say that on this very important point i think you need certain states now in order to win the nomination but you need different kind of states to win the presidency. California you needed to win the nomination of the Democratic Party because its almost a quarter of it but you dont need it as much in terms of winning the presidency because its guaranteed state for the democrats what you need is more of the battleground states are called like a virgin you know like wisconsin like michigan sold so forth so there are concert states that are very important to win the nomination and there are other states may be smaller but they are more important to win the presidency or to just just pick up a lot more when saying this and also the results from virginia very interesting these are excellent points by by marwan and joe that absolutely if we go to a contested convention the argument for biden may be hey i did the best in the states that will matter for the presidency for the president ial election that to move back to to virginia which as joe had mentioned used to be a republican state or even more of a swing state and now has become more and more solidly democratic over the last president ial elections biden is over performing his polls now of course but weve only had about 30 percent of the of the votes. You know collected and so we have to keep watching these numbers but he was polling at about 40 percent in virginia sanders was it about 20 and right now he is getting more than 55 in a 5055 percent of the vote whereas bloomberg and warren are actually 10 percent or below and what this indicate to us of these numbers hold up is that the voters of the democratic primaries are indeed a listening to their leads and consolidating behind biden when they might have wanted to go bloomberg or warren theyre shifting to by so so so how divisive then could could the convention be is it likely to be brokered split one of the you know you can have all sorts of terms hot mess might be one of them i hope not but you know what i think we we are looking for here is that if Bernie Sanders comes into the convention with a player. Of the votes it is hard in terms of legitimacy to to say but you know what instead were giving it to somebody else that is that is that is a fair point. That this is why the democratic establishment is trying to consolidate before super tuesday precisely for these states so that biden hopefully comes out of this into the convention with a plurality or as close to it as possible so that he can make the case that hes the best for the Democratic Party. And then and then and then also just dont do for a 2nd just because bernie is all about bringing in new young fresh voters but historically didnt turn out to vote do it. Its its always the you know chasing the dream of the of the young voter revolution right they are often the most passionate theyll show up to these events theyll be excited. But it is true that the the voters that you can count on are the older voters are the the white voters. We have a problem in any club ashar was actually very strong on this point i really appreciated her bringing this to bear we have a problem with even something as simple as Voter Registration in the u. S. And so for example these young people are they registered to vote you know have they voted before these are indications of whether you are actually a likely voter and not just somebody who is answering an opinion poll but may not be registered or have the wherewithal to know how to vote all right just quickly weve been talking so much about biden and Bernie Sanders this is quite a touch on bloomberg he performed poorly in the debates though joe didnt he this is 1st time on the ballot he spent millions and millions of dollars but we dont really know who his supporters are so whats the deciding not to Mike Bloomberg isnt it i mean it seems there is the real test for the whole strategy was get in late swoop in and save the day spend all this money and i was skeptical of this from the beginning or he has no history with the Democratic Party its a party where the politics of kind of emphasize authenticity and some coming in with the big checkbook trying to just sort of bully their way and just. Its probably a weak strategy in general i think 2020 was a particularly hard time to pull it off and so to see him under performing his polls there for the bad debates its sort of joe sort of a job that weve got some live pictures of Elizabeth Warren talking lets just tune into that for a 2nd.
