Josh rushing were going to prepare me ok in your stream today the United Nations is calling for their start of the war perseverence in syria as we ask is the world and different to them during the conversation twitter is your thoughts at a. J. Stream or leave a comment on our live you tube chat with you too can be of this true. The United Nations warns that the world is facing the worst humanitarian catastrophe of the 21st century as the forces of syrian president Bashar Al Assad close in on the last opposition stronghold in the that announcement by the un comes as Opposition Forces backed by the Turkish Military regained the key town of surat on thursday as aljazeera is hasham. Reports its the 1st and difficult reverse for the syrian army. And this is job that i leave on the streets of. For the rebel command this is just the beginning of a long bush to recapture lost territory. To the rocket is back on that old control we have managed to evict Syrian Army Russian all i am progovernment militias from so i want to assure our people that we will liberate all the cities of syria and if you did that the thought. But for the rebels to hold ground may be challenging the city is located on 2 highways in for an 5 which link damascus to aleppo and northeastern syria. So in Government Troops and russian fighter jets striking rebel positions preventing them from reinforcing their lines of defense. A moment of triumph for the rebels this is the 1st significant military gain in months oh why did they give the opposition has lost many strongholds and retreated north allowing the syrian army to advance to was it live city and as Government Troops close in thousands of civilians flee the offensive has displaced almost 1000000 people and created the wests humanitarian situation since the start of the conflict in syria 9 years ago. The Syrian Civil War has been called the worst manmade disaster since world war 2 save it live and live under fire these are some of the hashtags that syrians are rallying around after the governments military campaign to take the oppositions last stronghold the attack on in the has prompted the largest exodus of the war nearly a 1000000 people have fled the city what are tracked at the Turkish Border which remains closed to refugees a member of our community when maloof tweets situation it live is fast becoming one of the worst chapters yet of the syrian war meanwhile humanitarian organizations are calling on all parties to respect the rules of war but critics are worried about what happens if the office of doesnt stop on twitter or resign so for echoes what a lot of people are saying desperate intervention is needed heres what another member of our Online Community has to say about the children of the children are prepared by how many are on the roof looking for safety but there is no everything done who actually hit one single thing and its very important prestigious bennett markers to be able to reach out to them but i didnt support only i really must. Meet here at school. By many i meet. Because many chimes children would have a better future. Joining us to discuss this it had tied turkey is husham. Is a Senior Correspondent for aljazeera english in london jasmine elgamal of shes a senior fellow with the lancet council and a former syria visor with the u. S. Department of defense in amman jordan mazen a what is the is an advisor with world visions syria Crisis Response and in Chicago Illinois doctors a heres a little hes the president of med global and has volunteered for multiple medical missions to syria welcome everyone hashem i want to begin with you Al Jazeera English is currently reporting that there is a counter offensive coming from the Syrian Government forces and sara can you update us on whats happening there. Well basically josh what is happening as we speak is that the syrian army backed by russia. Are trying both to undermine the gains made by the burbles particular instead are pounding in their defense lines they dont want the rebels to set up their defense lines in the city and they dont want them to hold ground and get entrenched in their city this is quite a strategic moment. A crucial moment for all the parties but for the opposition by taken over. Which says its on the intersection of both highways in 4. 00 and 5. 00 there will be cut off supplies for the military for the syrian army the syrian army wont be able to send troops fighters convoys aid logistics from damascus all the way to to the area or to go because of the new gaze by the opposition and both parties are willing to hold ground and continue making further gains in the near future the rebels told us that they are determined to move south and take over another crucial area cause matter to them and so were talking about intensified fighting strikes shelling by Government Troops and russians but at the same time a determined push by the bubbles to reverse gains made by the government over the last few months considering the russians own their airspace is there much hope for the rebels be able to hold that ground. 0 chances in the near future unless the turkey steps up its offensive sends more fighters into more soldiers into the area and other troops crucial talks underway between turkey and russia and turkey has been insisting it was russia to give it access to the space in the western city particularly over the skies of libya if that happens the turks are hoping to be able to prevent the syrian army from pounding or using fighter jets to strike to strike rebels position one of the biggest concerns also here is that the government has been intentionally according to all of us to this particular by the United Nations targeting civilian areas paving the way for this unprecedented wave of this basement of civilians is syria since 2011 or so looking for what the turks are going to do president order one just recently had these comments about syria in its lip the developments on the ground in our favor but on the other hand the regimes losses very big 3 of our soldiers have been killed let them rest in peace but there is no time to deal with this now negotiations with the russians will continue however we are operating in it live with the advent of agreement along with the 911 kilometer border we are safeguarding our country we will continue to operate in syria backing Syrian Rebels and told we win the war so jasmine all eyes are on the turks in this to see what theyre going to do i believe he gave a deadline to the russians in the serious of the end up everywhere which is about 48 hours from now can the turks stop the band from the Syrian Government forces and the russians want decides he wants to. Hard to say at this point honestly because the turks are at a bit of a tough position erred on is under incredible pressure domestically to prove that he can and will stand up to the syrians and stand up to the russians and the church hes objective and live has always been clear which is to prevent and not as if of refugees more refugees going into turkey from syria and for that reason hes been incredibly stringent in his Public Comments and his actions on the ground to try to stop that from happening now youre right he said that as the deadline approaches if the assad regime does not stop its offensive and lead the turks will take actions its hard to its hard to see what kind of action that looks like though given that the turks also are playing a very delicate balance balancing act with the russians here the turks have certainly no desire to go head to head with the russians in any sort of. Manner that would provoke a larger confrontation between the turks and the russians but at the same time they have to show that theyre willing and able at least willing to to do something to stop the syrian offensive so its its. Fairly obvious that turkey will try to stop the offensive they will probably. Do more of what theyve been doing so far going into syria and showing and proving to their domestic audience that theyre going to do something about it whether or not theyll succeed though and how far theyre willing to go is unclear just what is the turkish escalation mean in terms of its nato allies turkey is a full member of nato right if they get involved is that they dont have their backs. Well thats a really good question and its one of the biggest frustrations the president early on has voiced over the last few months is how he feels that hes being abandoned by nato or turkey as a member of nato and they see themselves as having borne the brunt of the syria conflict really when it comes to refugees when it comes to the instability on the border hes constantly asking the europeans to give him more money to help to set up a safe zone so that he could send some of the 3000000 refugees in turkey dock across the border and he constantly complaining that hes not getting enough support from nato so youll remember that very recently secretary pompei oh and President Trump both stated it was right after turkish soldiers were killed by Syrian Armed Forces in syria both President Trump and secretary pompei ok mout and stated very clearly and very publicly that they stand with turkey as a nato ally it was a big boost symbolically for the turks but again what it means on the ground in real life if something were to happen to the turks would the International Community would nato member step in its again im clear and i hate to keep using the word unclear but its just really theres a lot of tension between what these actors are saying publicly and what theyre willing to do when push comes to shove and especially nato members who have said time and time again that they dont want to get involved and yet another conflict in the middle east so a lot remains to be seen when you brought a pump a load there it seems to me that the u. S. Is not really a ploy or this is at this moment and nato is trying to not be a player this is this kind of new error in International Affairs of ive heard it called west with move as it like the west doesnt seem to have much influence with is that what were seeing here. Absolutely and you know i think its really tragic what were seeing and. You know its all well and good to come up with a catch phrase for it but what it means for people on the ground is really its really heartbreaking to see what this sort of abdication of any sort of responsibility on the part of the west has meant for people on the ground in syria and i know that some of my co panelists are going to speak about what theyve seen on the ground and the bottom line is you have a u. S. President a french president you know mostly western leaders who are dealing with domestic audiences who are tired of what western intervention in the middle east who just you know look at the situation is live just one example of a situation of pure hopelessness and theyre kind of saying well what can we do about it we dont want to get involved in this kind of hopeless job but hopeless and so youre really seeing youre really seeing a very shameful abdication on the part of the west when it comes to islam but i can tell you as someone who worked at the department of defense the way that the u. S. Department of defense of looking at this the way that the u. S. Government of is looking out of this and the u. S. National security adviser actually articulated this a few days ago its this idea its this kind of like did question of well what can we do you know what is that that we actually can do to stop this from happening a lot of people have criticized for example democratic president ial candidates for saying theres no military solution to the crisis and so on but this is actually how the u. S. Sees the conflict i dont believe that whether Democratic Candidates or the current us president when theyre lying that theyre lying when they say that they genuinely dont see what they can do to stop this they see further escalation if they start bombing for example assads helicopters they see potential escalation with russia if they support turkey they see. Same thing they see themselves getting mired in one other conflict and they see themselves actually being helped with the south now whether or not the employee was that is one is one issue but thats just how how they see it i want to get whats at stake here and you alluded to it there in the middle of your answer and as those millions of people that are trapped between these military i want to go to someone who sent us a mirror of our committee sent in a video comment hes an Orthopedic Surgeon and this name is omar al from rocky dr omer i have rocky lets roll this unfortunately it is now with the heart of the atrocities by the assad regime russia and. Iran the militias on the ground. Everybody. Is wondering why the International Community is. Blind and used to the daily and endless atrocities by the assad regime against civilians there are no safe spaces safe spaces here you know that the live off 3500000 civilians take. I want to go to you what is daily life like on the ground right now in a live city and of the province. Its tragic if there were a situation that weve seen and 9 years as already mentioned over 1000000 has been displaced over 10 times imagine leaving everything over 10 times. Out of this 1000000 its 600 children and they have nothing absolutely no access to any headset recess to send it to action or to anyone close as well as i would if you had thousands unfortunately have reports of children facing to death yesterday 10 children were deported died when the schools that attacked again its very sad and its the worst that weve seen over the 9 years of war and again its the responsibility of the International Community to step up a foot and immediate long lasting cease fire this is what we need now and again its very challenging to access these folks relation despite of all of the 1st by the International Community within this small area its not enough we need more supports that and we need to voice the concerns of the children and their families im because they feel desperate they have nothing basically and they feel abandoned all the time they did their needs are growing and it only growing. Oh if in teams theyre trying but theyve been displaced themselves and theyve been trying to support as much as they can at the same time to take care of their loved ones but again its not good enough. And its such a tragic result weve got to come to a full stop right there. Were talking 600000 children theyre sleeping not even in tents and theyre freezing to death i read about a school yesterday that as the kids were leaving was bombed with cluster bombs i think thats probably what you were told that you saw the 10 kids that the world has got to stop and notice that like that this isnt just your every other day war its eerie like something is happening here that the world needs to sit up and recognize i want to go to another video comment from one of our viewers shes in a tent outside check this out we managed to hitch a ride to get to how is of waiting and asking people on the right since my husband died 8 months ago weve been forced to me its depressing to think that ill give birth here it would be better if i had my own tent. Doctors a little im sure her story is not unusual i know that youve been there on a number of medical missions and we just tell us the story of the little girl you met and the drawings. I was an ad lib last month right after the large exodus and were talking about 900000. 00 people have of them are children who are displaced. 15 percent of them according to the e. U. And have no shelter or even every building every school ive visited was converted to temporary shelters you have 1250 camps in the province of idlib some of them have 50 tents some of them have 510. 00 so and one of these camps we went and spent the night it was very cold it was raining we had to wear special boots for the mud was very muddy and the children were drawing actually out of the mud these beautiful picture that represents their lives children by the way are very resilient syrian children like any other children are very resilient they want to go to school they want to laugh they want to tell stories i asked them how many of you would like to be doctors in the future and 2 thirds of them raise their hand some of them wanted to be teachers some of them wanted to be architects even a couple of them wanted to be president. And i asked one of them her name was. Should be shes 12 years old shes from the village of your being north of hama she was displaced with her family 7 times until she ended up in that camp and she was rolling that beautiful picture that you seen i asked her what do you dream she said i want to be a doctor but every day i have to walk for 2 hours to the school and its very muddy i wish that there is less cold and less mud so i can walk to the school so this is how children think you know we may think that they are only going through suffering but actually they are thinking of their future and the children as 1500000 children 3000000 civilians can be a source of healing and reconstruction and rebuilding of the whole region if we focus on them this is absolutely unacceptable that hundreds of thousands of children are living like this. In the winter jasmine what does the International Community what was the responsibility here as i see this it seems like a failure of the nation states it seems like a failure of the International Community the everyone has failed these people and why. You know i dont think any of us can answer that question because its just so impossible to look at the situation right now and and fathom how no one could be doing anything its a complete failure on the part of the International Community the you know the u. S. Is getting a lot of criticism but the europeans havent done anything arab countries havent done anything i mean literally no one is doing anything about this what could they do i mean they can do what theyve done before the International Community was rallied together under president obama when he 1st said the chemical weapons used by president assad would be a red line i was working at the pentagon at the time and i remember being passed along with my colleagues on the joint staff to draw plans for what are you a u. S. Or tally ation or response would look like and we were the president at the time had sent secretary kerry are around to different capitals in the world to solicit support from our International Partners for retaliatory action everybody was ready to go at the very last minute both president obama and the u. K. Prime minister at the time the fight had to go and ask for a vote of confidence that centrally in the u. K. Parliament and in the u. S. Congress and that action was stifled but it just goes to show that they were ready to do something they can do something that the International Community acts together as one that would put enough pressure on the russians potentially as opposed to just one country trying to go alone and i think its absolutely shameful that they havent done so i dont as a whole are just yes i think thats a magical myth when we talk about the National Issues but that abstract i think we need to focus on the people who need to be shamed and this crisis and the most important parts of the city general the secretary general of the United Nations and so on your good years because hes not exerting his moral leadership on this crisis you should be right now and. Border he should be meeting with the people of live and telling them that the United Nations is with them providing mature and aid protecting their human rights and protecting the civilians hes not doing that has been another catastrophe like in libya and bangladesh in mozambique and bahamas but he is not paying attention to whats happening in syria and he need to be put under pressure so he can exert leadership also for the Democratic Candidates right in the United States and my country only in the last debate they mentioned syria and there were question about syria and their answers were very supportive which means that they do not understand that is a shame should between whats happening in syria i was happening in the United States the Syrian Crisis has led to the wars global refugee crisis one out of 4 refugees in the world this from syria that led to anti refugee sentiment and they made that sentiment their eyes of hate that i saw a popular diet the bread and the rice of terrorism and that affected us in the United States and we think sometimes our politicians think that syria is the land where people are killing each other but actually whats happening in syria is affecting us and the us and every politician in the Democratic Party or president should care about syria and we can do a lot president s from can exert influence on putin can apply more sanctions and pressure him so he can stop the bombing of children in school and the bombing of the hospitals 67 hospitals in the provinces at the border were bombed by the Syrian Regime and the russian and their mining the rules of war every day in syria and this is dangerous for all of us and i tell you right now we have extra really important point actually that dr who is making the point is that you know there are certain military options that you can use to for example stop helicopter from dropping bombs on jasmine and also hold on a 2nd some about to have to wrap this i want to continue this conversation on twitter before i go to amaze to you have any advice to individuals out there not the u. N. Or the government what they can do to try to help. We have just ones ability as a humanitarian to continue supporting these civilians to continue providing them what well then we can as long as we can because we knew we were losing access by the minute and yet again im calling for that humanitarian spirit to keep going and again were going in for the International Community to step up and just started the peace negotiation process and theres an inclusive process ive got to stop because were about to i was there a time on the show here guys continue this conversation on twitter so important not to im going to tweet out our in live coverage right now thank you for joining us and ill see you next on.
