without a fight. polls are about to close in a u.s. state that could be a significant pointer to the democratic candidate for the presidency. and how patients at the epicenter of china's corona virus outbreak of passing time while there's a warning of a risk to put our country's. a middle east peace plan that will bring neither peace nor stability and leave palestinians with a state to resembling swiss cheese that's how palestine's president made his case at the united nations security council what abbas has urged the world to reject the u.s. president donald trump's proposal al-jazeera is diplomatic editor james bays begins our coverage from the united nations. this was the day the palestinians chose to fight back against the trump plan in the un security council president mahmoud abbas describing it as a way to completely destroy the idea of a palestinian state the subtle natural this is the summary of the project that was presented to us this is the state that they will give us it's like a piece of swiss cheese really who among he would accept a similar state and similar conditions the palestinians had wanted to get the security council to vote on the trump plan isolating the united states but washington foot back in recent days to new series the current arab member of the security council in the chair for the meeting their deputy ambassador that's because their ambassador who'd been working on a draft resolution with the palestinians was fired last week under u.s. pressure to do it after the security council meeting a bizarre media event president obama asked with former israeli prime minister olmert the president made it clear olmert was the kind of man he could do business with even though the former prime minister jailed for corruption hasn't been in office for a decade president abbas left without taking any questions olmert stayed with the palestinians might have preferred he didn't he said he wouldn't criticize the trump plan even suggesting it could be a good starting point for negotiations there is here economy. in the play of president trump and there is something that must be further in order to establish than this is really when you go he asians the palestinians didn't get the security council vote they wanted ambiance really figure they invited to help make their case didn't in fact back their position this isn't today that pushes the palestinian cause forward james 0 at the united nations that have been protests in support of the palestinian president in several areas it abraham was with the demonstrators. both in years of gathered here today and i'm a law in the occupied west bank their main aim is to support the palestinian president mahmoud abbas in his speech at the united nations security council but they also want to avoid the rejection of the us people with i mean these peace plan they're calling it here the deal of same. goals they did say that the plan doesn't leave any of their theories and specially with hamas fatah and all the palestinian civil society if you can't articulate that then he is lost on the other hand this is especially important because israel if it's not tomorrow certainly in a month or 2 is has been given the green light by the front administration to annex some one 3rd of the future palestinian state of the west bank and that is dramatic and that basically will put an end to the idea of a 2 state solution and i think by then the palestinians were going to have to decide whether they're going to continue to embrace a 2 state solution or perhaps embrace a one state for 2 people. turkey's president is warning of swift revenge of his troops in syria continue to be attacked there is a tie up out of his comments come as syrian opposition rebels recaptured a village in province as they try to regain territory lost to government forces. reports. the odds were against the syrian rebels forced to retreat and abandon their strongholds in the more these fighters have suffered major setbacks over the last few days than they launched a sudden counterattack and within hours managed to overrun government positions in may that the rebels also shot down a syrian army helicopter. but there were no match for an army backed by a russian fighter jets the opposition's military victory was shot lived and president bashar al assad's troops soon regained control of the town. although a nadir holds no strategic importance the rebels needed a small victory to reassure the millions of civilians trapped in their lives that the fight is far from over. the rebels gains in and they were largely due to turkey's growing involvement in. the turkish military has intensified is shallowing of syrian army defense lines in a nailer and. more turkish troops are pouring into establishing military outposts their aim is to prevent syrian forces from advancing towards the city this. order the syrian regime got what it deserved but that's not enough it will pay a heavy price for attacking turkey soldiers i will announce the actions to be taken about the syrian issue after i meet with my parliamentary group tomorrow. as fighting intensifies civilians are abandoning their villages he has is a ghost town its population of 80000 has largely left for safer areas around 700000 people have been displaced over the past 2 months as the syrian army continues its offensive but the escalation is raising fears of a broader military confrontation. main are lie russia has called on turkey to stop its artillery attacks 2 years ago russia and turkey played a crucial role along with iran in establishing a safe zone in. the us syria void james jeffries expected to meet with senior turkish officials on wednesday to. the governments of funds have been in the u.s. accuses iran russia shia militias and the syrian government of undermining international efforts to implement a ceasefire that would allow millions of syrian refugees to return to their homes. istanbul ok let's take a closer look at where that military offensive is taking place in northern syria president bashar al assad's forces are now firmly in control of almost the entire country but that doesn't include opposition controlled areas marked in green and kurdish held parts in the north those are marked in yellow there are reports that for the 1st time in syria's nearly 9 years civil war government forces have seized control of the entire am 5 highway by driving opposition fighters out of that area west of aleppo that's important because it's the main trade route running from the north all the way to the southern border with jordan it connects the commercial hub of aleppo with major cities like damascus homs and hama it's going to make it easier for assad's forces to move in to capture city. voting is almost over in the 1st primary in the us presidential election people have less than an hour left to cast their ballots in new hampshire it's a closely watched election with 11 democratic candidates so it could bring some clarity on who are going to be the front runners no democrat has become the party's presidential nominee without finishing 1st or 2nd in new hampshire we've got 2 correspondents watching voting in new hampshire kristen salumi standing by in nashua 1st let's go to patty call hain in manchester over the last couple of days you've been giving us an outline of many of the issues that new hampshire voters have been concerned about but what's really at stake here is it those issues or is it just finding somebody who can divert president donald trump. it's 100 percent people saying that they want someone who can defeat donald trump exactly what that looks like though is where the split is so right now bernie sanders senator bernie sanders from vermont it's basically his race to lean on he was here 4 years ago it's hillary clinton he ran away the huge margin of vote now his people are saying don't expect that this time the big question because coming out of iowa really didn't get results for days and days that usually shapes the race so the question is pete the former mayor from indiana does he have the momentum coming out of iowa so we're going to be watching is does sanders win as expected and does come in 2nd and if so how closely the other thing we're watching is set here in the close wishart she had what many people say was a very strong friday and this is a state where people tend to not make up their mind in till the last minute and so just being around you saw a lot of any signs so that could be an indication or not you have to sort of mix things up when it comes to presidential campaigns one of the big things though is joe biden former vice president he was expected to be the front runner he surprised everyone in new hampshire and said yes i'm. hear he left early for south carolina that could be an indication of just how poorly his campaign expects him to do here but again this is very weird this election year because everything is so up in the air there are so many democrats running for the nomination it's quite possible that we won't know for more weeks from now who the likely nominee is going to be because all of these candidates are saying no matter what happens they're going to stay in the race that said they tend to say that and then what happens is their money dries up and they might want to go to south carolina but they have to be a little for a dislike there so really a lot on the line tonight in close polls close about 45 minutes start to close and we could get results in the next $33.00 to $3.00 and a half hours so it's going to be a very exciting night here a very tense night for those in the campaigns but he thanks very much indeed well kristen salumi is joining us from. his watch party in nashua and kristen just give us an indication of what the voters there have been saying to you. yeah i was at a poll site earlier on one hand i'm hearing strong support for president trump even among no hampshire's famous independent voters some 40 percent of the electorate here doesn't necessarily identify with either the democrat or republican party and i spoke to one person in that category who said he described himself as a working class union guy and he said he's voting for the president because he feels the democrats just have gone so far to the left they don't represent him or speak for him anymore on the other hand there are a lot of people that i've spoken to who really don't like the president they're looking for someone who can bring the country together and the overarching sentiment there has been indecision a lot of people really struggling to get who to vote for who can best defeat donald trump and who best stands for that they're really looking for someone with character it's almost more about the person and their genuineness as opposed to policy because at the end of the day there isn't that much different difference in policy between all of the care candidates it really comes down to them to who they trust and that electability issue again and that's why we've seen the rise of people who to judge marilyn the from south bend indiana senator amy. as patty was referring to the polls show that they've gotten a little bit of a bomb certainly the people i've been speaking to have also been talking about them as possible candidates but perhaps the most excitement i've seen from voters has been behind bernie sanders he had a huge rally here last night thousands of people showed up and they're probably the most energetic and most strong enthusiastic supporters of any of the candidates that i've seen here so far and as patty mentioned again he won the primary here in 2016. people may be falling back on bernie now. because they trust him he stands for what he's always stand for they say that could be part of what's behind his rise in the polls here and his support but it will be interesting to see particularly here at headquarters how the mayor does and these other candidates who seem to be getting some. rise out of the voters christine thanks very much indeed for more ahead on the news out of inflating while resigning defeat for india's governing party in the state election is being seen as a sign of wider rejection of its most controversial new law. the u.s. justice department scales back its sentencing between 11 democratic candidates and it's hoped the result will bring about some clarity about the front runners ok well for more on that jason nichols is joining us he's a progressive political and social analysts he's with us from washington d.c. as always we appreciate your time so thank you very much just give me your take on how you think this is going to play out tonight. well i think bernie sanders is going to is going to win this he's not going to win it with 22 points like he did in 2016 but he's going to have a strong showing and then you have people who to judge who is nipping at his heels and has a lot of momentum even coming out of the debacle in iowa one of the one person that's going to surprise everybody is they may close which are who is not expected to do well in this state and if she beats elizabeth warren and it really hurts elizabeth warren's chances moving forward joe biden has already conceded that he will not do well in the state so he's moving on to south carolina where he has a firewall of african-american support and i just want to state that iowa and new hampshire while they are important because they're 1st they're not reflective of the current democratic party the democratic party is very diverse it has african-americans latinos native americans and when you look at these 2 states iowa north and new hampshire they are very white and they do not reflect the current party so i think that we're going to really see where things are going to go after nevada and south carolina and we shouldn't of course forget that the republicans are holding their own primary as well the result of that as far as i can tell you may disagree is pretty much a done deal donald trump does look as though he's going to get through there let me ask you about this the representation of the democratic party do you think that iowa and new hampshire are losing the status that they've had in previous elections when it comes to forecasting who is going to be leading the pack when it goes through these elections for precisely the reasons you're talking about because the nature of the democrat party has changed. yes i do i think iowa number one with the debacle that occurred with their caucuses i think that the whole party pretty much agrees that we're not going to depend on iowa to tell us who is going to be our front runner new hampshire though i think still has some sort of gravitas in terms of. momentum moving into super tuesday which is really the 1st real big date when you have a bunch of primaries and really important states with a whole lot of delegates we're talking about north carolina virginia and alabama and arkansas so those are that's the real important time but i think that you know iowa was certainly lost that status and the party looks very different in new hampshire now so i would say that they both lost a certain amount of status but they do give a little bit of momentum moving forward our correspondent was telling me earlier that as far as she can tell from people she's spoken to new hampshire the main goal is simply to find somebody who is going to be able to defeat donald trump do you think that there's a risk that the important issues that exist in america the moment with employment with diversity with the immigration and so on do you think that is a risk that those issues could be sidelined in the hunt amongst the democrats to find somebody who can just stand up against a long term. don't i think the important issues health care climate change immigration those are at the top of everybody's list there are some issues that we run into for example we know that bloomberg is going to move forward he's already polling really well he's not in new hampshire but he certainly enters when we get to super tuesday and many people believe that he will be the eventual nominee he has a really checkered past when it comes to race and i think that that is something that people are worried about i'm certainly concerned about it but when it comes to a lot of the other issues all of the democrats are kind of running on those issues because we have a strong economy here in the united states and you have to make a strong argument that you are not only able to beat donald trump but that you are better than donald trump you are better for the economy you are better for the environment and so i think that everybody's got that at the top of their list this is what democratic voters are going to hold people accountable on so i think that we're not in necessarily trouble and we can't do much worse than the president that we currently have always good to get your views and there's just nickles we appreciate your time thank you thank you. all for prosecutors investigating a close ally of president donald trump have quit the case after the u.s. justice department overruled this sentencing recommendation well just stone was convicted on 7 counts of lying to the u.s. congress obstruction and witness tampering the change came after the president criticized the proposed sentence of 7 to 9 years as a miscarriage of justice gable elizondo is joining us now from washington d.c. this seem to be an awful lot of twists and turns going on in this case gable just bring us up to date kind of where we are and also how we got here. yeah that's right it's been quite a day here in washington d.c. with more allegations of donald trump abusing power at least that by democrats on this particular case now it all stems from roger stone who's a very controversial figure a provocateur or he's been called and he has really the brains behind donald trump's political image and he primarily has been a very close friend of donald trump for decades now while he was caught up in the robert muller special prosecutor investigation into 2016 russian interference in that election and he was indicted on 7 counts by the prospect of a prosecutor and he has been awaiting sentencing now for several months now fast fast forward to tuesday now and that's when prosecutors from the justice department suggested 7 to 9 years in prison well that immediately got a response from president donald trump was it very unusual for a president to to comment on sun ongoing investigation such as this trump saying tweeting out earlier on tuesday that it was a miscarriage of justice and also late on tuesday saying this listen i thought the recommendation was ridiculous i thought the whole prosecution was ridiculous and i look at others that haven't been brought us a kid or i don't know where it is now but when you see that i thought it was an insult to our country and it shouldn't happen and we'll see what what goes on there but it was a it was a horrible aberration. these are the i guess the at the same people that put everybody through hell and i think it's a disgrace no i have not been involved with it at all. now this is donald trump as we say now all 4 federal prosecutors have resigned as of late tuesday from this case basically a revolt within the justice department and this is unlikely to affect donald trump's voters they will probably brush this off as nothing more than trump. doing what he is able to do however the democrats will see this much differently we've already heard from the top democrat in the senate who says this is a disgrace and he said this is another example of his in his view donald trump abusing power and leaving the door open to perhaps the democrats opening up an investigation into this carol thanks very much indeed for i want to bring in bruce fein he's a former united states associate deputy attorney general he's joining us from washington d.c. as well bruce gave it was saying the already allegations that this is political interference in the legal process is that what it is. of course that's what it is mr trump did not follow the trial he did not know what the evidence was that was induced to result in the convictions he obviously didn't know what the law is on sentencing guidelines and in my experience long standing at the department i can't think of a single case where a president overrode the decisions of the prosecutors on sentencing and they know more than anyone else i also think that it's likely a mr trump understands that the new recommendation from the department which is to leave it entirely in the discretion of the district judge as to what the sentence should be. and knowing what i know about the sentencing judge mr sullivan judge sullivan it's going to be much stricter than perhaps even the department recommended he is a stern taskmaster when it comes to government officials miss or misleading the government and if mr district judge stall of and then does impose a sentence in the range that the initial recommendation suggested 7 to 9 years or even more mr trump in my judgment will pardon roger stone saying it's a travesty of justice i think that's what he did to set up the case for a pardon where do you think this leaves relations between the prosecutors at the level say of those who brought the case against roger stone the senior members of the just the department of justice what's going to happen between them. well this is why i think there will be an enormous ripple effect the vast majority of criminal cases in the federal system well over 90 percent are resolved by a plea bargain in which the prosecutors allege they offer we will recommend a sentence of so and so and so and so and you then in exchange agree to plead guilty the credibility of the local prosecutors now is crippled because if i'm a defense counsel i'd say well we're recommendation i can just plead for the president and he can override your recommendation so why should i be bargaining with you a so it undercuts the ability of all the prosecutors not just those in this case to negotiate effective plea bargains with defendants which will mean a quite a more difficult. effort to obtain convictions with proper sentences is the situation essentially a done deal on the decision will be taken by the court or is there some way that for example the 4 prosecutors who originally brought the case might be able to appeal against. no they don't have any appeal after all they do serve at the pleasure of the president but you were your point was well taken in that it's totally up to the district judge here judge sullivan to decide what the sentence will be could disregard to disregard any recommendation that the department makes and say the district judge sullivan he's been on the bench for over 20 years he's very independent and i would be stunned if he gave a sentence more lenient than what had been recommended by the prosecutors who quit in protest over a removing their recommendation in favor of entire discretion with the district judge bruce fein thank you very much indeed. hundreds of thousands of refugees migrants flee central america each year most heading north to escape violence and poverty but a report by doctors without borders says they suffer even more brutality along the migration route almost 40 percent of the migrants who spoke to the medical charity said they the human being because we are talking about human beings about human beings in this center of the political. policy it's right it's not up to us to the day did migration policy itself any government order from an appeals court the court's ruling came late on monday after concerns that some detainees may not have had access to legal advice the british government says 25 people were prevented from being deported because of the ruling that in baba explains. t.j. thompson came to britain when he was 5 his parents are british citizens and he thought he was too but when he was 17 he committed a drug related offense he says he was groomed by a gang and was later jailed for 15 months then he got caught up in a battle with immigration or thought spending months at a time in detention centers unable to work out his era spoke to him shortly before he was due to be deported to jamaica where he was born. i was stuck in a. minute. and i don't have nobody in jamaica on the street. in the end taiji and many others like him were taken off the passenger list after campaigners won a legal challenge a judge ruled people in detention centers near heathrow airport should not be deported because they haven't had mobile phone coverage so couldn't contact lawyers eventually the flight to jamaica left with fewer than half the intended number on board these are all foreign national offenders guilty of crimes that have led to senses of at least 12 months of war and this includes crimes such as manslaughter you know rape dealing class a drugs and it is absolutely right if you are a foreign because of administrative changes in the last decade people from former colonies who were entitled to british citizenship were deprived of health care and the right to work and even deported now
