tuckey deploys troops and tanks to syria's last rebel stronghold as pro-government forces claim a crucial town. and brazil's government moves to cut back a key antipoverty programs even some families struggling to survive. now the ukraine experts who testified that donald trump's actions were improper has been ousted from his white house job just 2 days after trump was acquitted in his impeachment trial utena connell alexander van when had told the u.s. house that trump put pressure on his ukrainian counterparts to investigate political rival joe biden in bins lawyer is calling his removal an act of revenge by the president hours early a trumpet said he wanted been and gone. well i'm not happy with their customers are they happy with the i'm not they'll make that decision you'll be hearing they'll make a decision while the top democratic senator chuck schumer was quick to respond to the news on to us a he said the pentagon assured me that patriots and whistleblowers like to tell it kind of and then will be protected any reprisals against him while others who came forward to tell the truth are wrong and should be seen for what they are an extension of president trump's cover up well here's a reminder of what the tenant can of been been told the u.s. house last november i was concerned by the call what i heard was inappropriate and i reported my concerns to mr eisenberg it was improper for the president of the united states to demand a foreign government investigate a u.s. citizen and a political opponent i was also clear that if you crane pursued an investigation it was also clear that if you create pursued an investigation into the 2016 elections the bidens and it would be interpreted as a partisan play this would undoubtedly result in ukraine losing bipartisan support undermining u.s. national security and inventing russia's strategic objectives in the region let's get more on this from ross and jordan who joins me now from washington d.c. given president tom's tone over the last few days does this come as a surprise. it does not come as a surprise that really the big question was not stasia was it going to happen sooner rather than later there is this reaction of course from lieutenant colonel benjamin's lawyer david process and i'm quoting from part of his statement there is no question in the mind of any american why this man's job is over why this country now has one less soldier serving it at the white house lieutenant colonel vandeman was asked to leave for telling the truth his on or his commitment to write frightened the powerful of course we have all now souls also learned that the lieutenant colonels when brother who is also a lieutenant colonel in the u.s. army and who was working on the national security council as one of its lawyers was also fired on friday afternoon and was escorted at the same time from the white house alongside his brother we understand further that both men will be going back to the pentagon for a short time the brother yevgeny benjamin is going to join the legal team at the pentagon while lieutenant colonel vandeman will spend a couple of months there before he moves on to the u.s. army college in pennsylvania for more education and more research something that is typically done for officers who are considered general officer material roles what kind of reaction have we seen more broadly in d.c. from politicians and from the pentagon. well before this came out the question was raised to the defense secretary marc esper on friday morning and he said that it was the pentagon's policy it was his personal commitment that no reprisals could be taken or would be executed against any member of the military in particular against lieutenant colonel vend been the course there are those in the military community who are now questioning why he was not reassigned from the white house back to the pentagon or to another military installation before this actually happened why there wasn't some sort of emergency plan as you might expect those who support the president are chairing the dismissal of both vent and brothers while top democrats are decrying this action saying that this is simply the president acting in anger and basically that we could expect more of this type of behavior from the u.s. president. there for us in washington d.c. thank you are. staying with u.s. policy and democrats in the united states are trying to move on from the tales and delay surrounding the iowa caucus results with the new hampshire primary coming up on tuesday now the 7 leading candidates will go head to head in a debate just in the coming hours opinion polls in new hampshire people just as closing in on bunny sound is 38 year old bush is as has been bolted from being america small cities apparently finishing marginally ahead of sunday's in the iowa caucus the military that where the centrist platform is the fast openly gay candidate to start off on a high note in the primaries it has been an extraordinary week and we are absolutely electrified by the energy that we are coming here with and by the extraordinary validation of this campaign vision that we had in iowa on monday i'm also mindful and humbled. by the fact that new hampshire is new hampshire. and new hampshire is not the kind of place to let iowa or anybody else tell you what to do. bernie sanders was only 0 point one percent behind in iowa the 78 year old has strong grassroots support from the left and he's attacked rivals from taking support from wealthy donors and i'm reading some headlines from newspapers about the. most exclusive billionaire donors of any democrat let's let was from forbes the hill. tops billionaire donor list well elizabeth warren who is also from the left of the party finished 3rd in iowa she's been struggling to shake off criticism about how to fund her medicare for all plan and also seeking to recover from the slump is former vice president joe biden who finished 4th in iowa but he's seen by many senior democrats as the person who could beat donald trump in november well let's speak now to john netanya he's a democratic strategist and a former communications director at the democratic national committee and he now joins us live from washington d.c. john thanks for joining us this evening you were just to shape messaging florida here the d.n.c. talk us through what kind of tone and dynamics we could see on stage tonight especially after the debacle that was iowa. yeah it's a it's a great question i think pete and bernie came out of iowa essentially tied and so now it's there's there's all sorts of incentives for them to be attacking one another i think what the the party in the country would like to see or at least not all the country but democrats would like to see is them making their case to be the one to take on donald trump and what you've seen is that the democratic primary electorate the voters aren't sure who is the person who can take on donald trump even as he becomes administrator becomes more and more menacing in the wake of the impeachment acquittal so john has this conversation then shifted from policy and ideology to electability and if that is the case then is it is it such a biden finishing 4th because that's his whole campaign platform it's not over for joe biden i think by a long shot i think this is still anyone's race at least among the top 4 or so contenders we haven't yet seen a state vote that has a large african-american population that goes for both iowa and new hampshire are predominantly white which is not what the democratic party or the general election electorate looks like in the u.s. and we know that joe biden for instance has a lot of strength in that community too so it's still a very wide open race whether it will be less about ideology i don't know i think there's a there's a lot of reason for these candidates to throw some elbows i'm just hoping they don't forget to throw some of donald trump well talk us through the different styles of campaigning we've been seeing so if i see that song doesn't warren have been focusing on some of the biggest cities but people this is has been going everywhere shaking hands is that why he's ahead. you know he has camped out in iowa he made a decision early on that that was going to be where he was going to make his move and make his mark and it worked out beautifully for him coming in you know again tied or winning depending on how you do the count there the question is how long does that momentum last so now he goes to new hampshire he is getting a boost from iowa despite what he said in the clip there that you know new hampshire people don't let iowans make their decisions for them that sort of flattery will get him places in new hampshire and i expect that he'll do well there the question is when he then runs into the 2 following states which are more diverse 1st south carolina and nevada as well whether he's going to be able to sustain this momentum and whether it will carry over at that point john there's been so much talk of iowa or new hampshire can you explain trans national audience just how significant they are and how much damage has this now said i would actually for the democratic party itself. it's a great question usually the night of the iowa caucus caucuses there is one clear victor and they give a great inspiring speech i think back to barack obama in 2008 and it really sends the message across the country that we have our candidate or where we were not sure yet we have at least one very strong candidate that you should seriously think about as your possible next president and we didn't really have that in iowa because there were some glitches and delays and so there was no big iconic speech coming out of iowa so we'll see what happens what happens next the way this works is you do iowa and the new hampshire which have traditionally for a long time been the 1st 2 states to go what happened a few years ago in response to complaints about how overwhelmingly white those states were with too few for their states were added just afterwards south carolina with a large black population nevada with a diverse population including more latino voters and then you have these 4 states and then there's what's called super tuesday where lots of states vote including a very large states i imagine the penny on what we see over the next couple of states i think super tuesday and victory night on super tuesday if someone has a clear lead by then that's when we'll begin to get a sense of who's going to be running against john correct me if i'm wrong had that it's my understanding that no candidates has ever well if you win iowa and if you win new hampshire you then become the nominee you know not necessarily and that or that that no one has won but if the not become the nominee is that right. i believe that is correct i also believe though that all bets are off that there are there are lots of streaks like that have been broken over the last couple of cycles and i would not be surprised to see some new rules written this time around either well speaking of unpredictable how has thomas impeachment affected this race and several of the candidates particularly in iowa spending time sitting in the senate and off the campaign trail has that changed things yeah yeah yeah that certainly did change the dynamic to have them so front and center in that impeachment process i think for the most part democrats are going to be glad to have the impeachment process behind them because talking about phone calls to ukraine doesn't really change anybody's opinion doll trump and it doesn't really change anybody's vote preference for the fall it doesn't tell people what democrats can do for people should they be put back into power back into the white house so i think democrats are happy to have this behind them to some degree but what we've seen from donald trump this week as we were saying just a couple of minutes ago he is now he's been behaving lawlessly arguably for quite some time but i think we are likely to see a whole different level of the addictiveness cheating i'm not even sure i want to imagine what comes next after united states senate basically votes him a license to commit to break the law and so i think this is going to be an election year potentially unlike any we've seen this country for a long time well speaking of unlike anything we've seen in this country i i do also want to ask you about someone who won't be on stage this evening michael bring him back as he has now doubled his campaign's ending he's even got trump's former naval secretary out stumping for him what are the chances that he get a nomination. i think they're rising i don't i'd i would not count him out at all i think again that a number one thing that people want to see there are all kinds of reasons that all kinds of constituencies within the democratic party would object to mike bloomberg but the a number one overriding issue is someone who can be donald trump and not too far down the list is somebody who would be able to tackle climate change and i think that both of those potentially there's a case for mike bloomberg to be made to make there so i would expect to see him in the mix for the next for the next few states at least and john leslie i do want to take on our top story this evening the firing of alexander then then and the house to continue investigating trying to say things are going to be completely unpredictable that how might all of that play out in this election. i i think the house feels obligated because they couldn't call witnesses because they couldn't make their case to continue to hold accountable both around the ukraine story which donald trump never really stops rudy giuliani is still over in ukraine trying to dig up dirt over there so i think that will be an ongoing thing i think with the senate vote in the rearview mirror i think that becomes less of a page one story and more of an ongoing kind of kind of issue but the thing again that concerns me most is i don't think it's just going to be a couple of firings here and there a spiteful move i expect to see some serious policy changes and some really worrisome things from this this president i think democracy here is in some serious peril john messenger there a democratic strategist who is joining us live from d.c. thank you very much for being with us on out there. now plenty more ahead here on this news hour including why botswana is lifting a ban on the home to elephants. and then sport the former pakistan cricket a who's been sentenced to jail for spot fixing things as that story. now china's government is struggling to stop the spread of the coronavirus with one more people reported dead and a province of lies now across china at least $717.00 people have now died and the the irish government is throwing millions every year of public money into buying private health care in 2019 it was the equivalent of 82000000 dollars and this year it's going to be closer to $110000000.00 and still the waiting lists go up having private health insurance meant that when john wall was diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer in 2017 prompt treatment helped extend his life in just the latest setback it started when the leftist thing government stopped adjusting payouts to keep up with inflation now the current administration has again hit what was a successful and cheap and the poverty to their very important at the same time you know reached about what one quarter of the of the brazilian population the very very poor is very well parg and the money goes to women go through children with conditionalities and costs very little so the cost of going to point 4 percent of the g.d.p. so you basically brazil did a sort of fiscal adjustment on the poor fritz recipients not just present survival but futures and now one whole. book amish feel my children have big dreams the eldest wants to join the army he was training and trying it for a football club but we had to a terrible economic problem now they're struggling to recover from one of the worst periods in brazilian history in terms of economic advance and they're cutting spending. and of course this is a place that. the people are not very powerful they don't have powerful lobbies and it's easy to get away with here it's a big mistake it's almost i would call something of a criminal act to take away the small amount of support these people have and frankly it doesn't say very much but it's sort of an easy branch to cut this terrible lack of i mean people who depended on you know $50.00 a month 100 dollars a month to sort of fill out their budget. now or sort of. just cut off with no good reason for doing so except save a very modest amount of money this is really a flagship program that has had tremendous success and it's been imitated in countries around the world and it seems to work not only provides money that essential for these families but also gives an opportunity for them to get their kids into schools gives them an opportunity to get. adequate health services pakistan's parliament has passed a resolution calling for the public hanging as convicted child killers and rapists citizenship have been built right people from outside the country will come and settle in the states i assure the people of the that nothing of the sort will happen. india correspondent elizabeth purana has monitoring that visit from the capital new delhi. he spoke for a long time and he was there in a place called border land and autonomous territory off to signing a peace accord with the tribal group the bodos now critics have said that this was a hastily signed accord because the government needs the political support of the borders as it faces opposition elsewhere in ass over the citizenship door and whereas protests around the country elsewhere and india have been by people who say that the rule discriminates against muslims the protests from the movies to states like a for a different reason the northeastern states have the largest number of migrants. they share a border and people there who are an ethnic minority in india feel that they will become a minority in their trophy hunting . there's so much. stigma attached to elephant carrying capacity which is which is an absolute number and as we know ecosystems do not with lack that they have they would have been a balance of apes and flows so they are natural processes such as drops that will reduce elephant population numbers and we certainly seen that in some parts of africa. they are other nations. you know reducing our official water holes by forcing elephants to new to different areas and just affecting the way in which they utilise the landscape so those are more effective long 2 measures. trophy hunting will certainly not make again in the overall numbers what it will do is make a dent in the number of breeding material bulls and certainly in those pools and of trophy quality of which i must point out the lost so so if you lift across africa and this will actually cause much more of a significant impact we know that if the numbers are estimated to be about $115000.00 which seems to sound like a fair number but thinking that they were more than a 1000000 in the early 1970 so i think suffice to say that if i'm poaching is taking about 25 to 30000 elephants a year already population and
