trump attacks democrats a day after being acquitted of impeachment charges. the spend to prepare for the afghan taliban that's running a rehabilitation center for drug addicts we have an exclusive report from heroin the problem. trading textbooks for rifles white children as young as 8 being recruited into militia groups in mexico. now a chinese doctor who is among the fastest to sound the alarm on the corona virus outbreak has died from it 34 year old when yang was accused of scam mongering by the police when he 1st posted about the virus on a local messaging application back in december now after hours of conflicting reports on state media central hospital has confirmed his death the world health organization says they're all signs the number of new cases of the virus is dropping but it's too soon to know if it's reached its peak at least 638 people are now known to have died from the virus. and more than 31000 are infected meanwhile chinese authorities are still battling to treat patients a 2nd new hospital with 1500 beds has opened and and those with milder symptoms are being lived to sport sentence and public holes and the virus is spreading through a cruise ship carrying thousands of passengers stuck in quarantine at the japanese port of yokohama another 41 people on board have now been confirmed infected taking the number of cases to 61 well scott high that joins us now live from beijing scott tell us about the mood there as the news spreads of dr lee's death is there anger in beijing i mean the government appears to have restricted information well if you look at social media as i say yes there is a lot of anger over mr lee's death now when you look at kind of the trajectory of what happened to him you know he 1st started this this social media group this we chat group a small one just with other doctors back in december 30th and he said look there i've come across this we need to be concerned about this let's take a look at it not that far after that he was summoned to a police station where he had to sign a confession that he was spreading rumors. 5 weeks in he's died from the virus so yes there's a lot of anger and also a sincere and genuine and strong condemnation of the way the government has been handling the situation with the coronavirus on social media you know this all really started later on thursday evening about 9 o'clock when there were reports about his death and then as you mentioned the stasi there is kind of back and forth and state media if he had died if he hadn't died but then official confirmation coming in the very early morning hours here on friday from the hospital where he was being treated that he did in fact die so yes you know there's been a lot of anger on social media and the way the government has been handling things but because of his death he was really kind of the symbol of a you know a early whistleblower and now that he has died from the virus that anger has just turned up scott where also clearly saying more infections but the number of new cases in mainland china as a penny decreasing how confident are authorities now that they can get ahead of this. why i think it there's something you know you know we've been talking about this turning point as was mentioned by the w.h.o. last week and that is the point where you know we've seen this trip up we're to jack 3 of the numbers of infected of the numbers of dead steadily going up every day so now if there is even a little bit of a plateau that is something that they can refer to as they refer to as a turning point and that is something that can study and kind of use as a model to figure out how the virus is being successfully contained and what's changing it's going to take a little bit of time i would imagine to digest those numbers i think you know one day figures coming out one day that aren't as big as the increase was the day before is maybe the indication of that but i think they'll have to look at those numbers kind of moving forward you can't just use one day as an example of yes this is going to be a turning point so obviously it's it could potentially be something that looks good but it's still going to take some time to really digest and kind of analyze those numbers a little bit more but as you said you know the deaths and in fact the cases continue to go up and if i can just touch on one thing you know you mentioned these facilities in the city that are being built you know there are those who are less affected by the virus are putting and being put in gymnasiums and an expo center and then we've got these 2 new hospitals have come online all the beds that all those facilities new facilities have brought to the situation with the virus all those new beds would only cover last week's increase in infections so that means that you're moving forward even if we have a little bit of a dip there are going to still be a great need for a lot more beds. for that on the ground for us in beijing thank you scott. well let's now speak to stephen vines he's a political commentator and a journalist who's joining us live via skype from hong kong stephen clearly a lot of fear and anger during the grounds where you are and i do want to start with the case of dr levy so as scott was saying with art he's tried to silence him back in december and now even with his death there's been confusion he was allegedly reported dead and that was retracted then he was incredible care then confirmed dead how is this affecting the credibility of state media. well i must say the credibility of chinese state media from where i'm sitting in hong kong has always been very low people do not believe the numbers that are being given do not believe the accounts of how fast the virus is or isn't spreading and the doc the death of dr lee is that. because a lot of people are aware of it they they know his courage last december in the you know trying to warn his fellow doctors that what was going on he's a young man. you feel really people are very angry at this and very alone the city in some close near to mainland china there's this poor city of reliable information while i do want to ask you about this port city because it seems that there were about 2 weeks in which chinese journalists were allowed to publish stories about the mishandling of the virus but now the government seems to have clamped down and at one point even the openly said it was going to send hundreds of its own journalists from the propaganda department to report on the virus so that people trust what they're saying now and could that affect the way that the virus spreads . well i think the problem is that because there's an information vacuum people believe quite outlandish rumors incidentally even the chinese state media itself shinhwa the official news agency. broadcast a detail piece about how people should be resorting to her the reds to cure the virus that this is completely on groups that so state media itself is putting out blatantly false information people don't know what's happening people are trying desperately to get in touch with other people through the internet sometimes the great firewall of china breaks down mostly it doesn't president xi jinping has instructed officials to strengthen that wall joining the crisis so you know that there is total uncertainty about what's going on i'm sorry stephen i'm going to interrupt you there because there is a chinese press conference that's happening right now she found the commissioner of china's foreign ministry as speaking right now about the coronavirus let's take a listen to record temperature in the morning and evening. we have also introduce my apologies i believe we've lost that feed and we will come back to that as soon as we can well let's go back to stephen vines who was just telling us a little bit about the media landscape in china and hong kong and how that's been playing out with the coronavirus stephen i do want to ask you about social media way bow in particular we've been talking about this misinformation and the anger that's fermenting could we potentially see some of that turn into unrest. well here's the thing i think that people are seeing with their lives for what's happening they are seeing that they can't go to work they are seeing their neighbors being quarantined they are seen people dying if they look at the official state media remember there is no independent media in china they will know that china is valiantly battling this virus is scoring great successes your correspondents in beijing talked about these new hospitals that they've been building at rapid speed in war so the picture that they're getting from the state media are is we've got this under control we are going to be able to defeat rioters to their eyes they see the country so whether that would lead to unrest is very hard to say would it lead to discontent i think that's an absolute certainty well stephen your sitting in hong kong at the moment which is about to impose this 2 week quarantine on all travelers from the mainland i mean that's a huge endeavor the people there feel that this is a good idea. oh yes i mean people here actually want the border to be closed entirely and there is as i'm speaking to you a strike underway by employees of public hospitals who are furious with the government for not having close the border that strike is very questionable in the middle of a crisis like this but it does have a lot of public support and in hong kong itself there's been all this printing buying up all sorts of materials simply because there's no confidence in the government in being able to put this under control now actually the reality in hong kong is the level of infections it is is very low there's only fortunately been one trait 70 but fortunately but you know it's i mean. so you know that that dark mood that we see on the chinese mainland is coming over here but the difference being that you do have a much more open media event i'm in a place i am going to interrupt you again because i believe we do have the form of the chinese find ministry press conference where they are speaking out about the crime and coronavirus let's take a lesson there for china has confronted it and study it the coronavirus in the scientific and evidence based medicine was the passage was identified we lost no time in mobile uneasy making all round planning and taking actions with unprecedented intensity and effect. china's beat is to race against it by its evenly one week we identified the virus sequenced its genome and shared it with it. and the world. to put it in context similar efforts took 2 months your own during ebola and one must in that it's one n one pandemic. in just 2 that as we put in place in our lives nationwide information reporting system which came in to use it for the lunar new year's eve in 3 bears we developed a new nuclear accidents detection kids and we are working back since the drugs they might. now let's look at a set of laws. the lady who is miss some had. a military medical officer. that left poll shows a tearful up between her and her 11 year old son in 2014 as she was leaving for africa to help with the fight against it all of them. at the right while was taken on the lunar new year's eve 6 years later when she packed up again ready for that new mission was up. that now is definitely a year old boy's step nothing that's all it took is ups miss some did not even have time but a family reunion dinner the most important one for the chinese of the new before setting up it's. there are many many more who are like missed some have have given up precious opportunities of family reunion and rushed to the front line immediately epidemic broke up. was there and do the essay and compassion they have shown the world china's wharves. learned a bar in a time of ruthless epidemic. define the remnant by us we the chinese have stood firm together. in the ongoing battle that people of all have. chose to lock down the city for the sake of and that's waiting patiently for the dawn of a new day my city has formed you but i love to say. such is there in the most feeling for their city. see you again are you in a cherry blossom season such is their scent green moved. when everything gets all right and i'll treat you to hot dry and those such is their kind invitation to all of us. beloved of the city has not checked of love as will have people are holding their ground now keeps pouring in from all parts of china. health workers have risen to the challenge and applied to go to the front. whose stories have so often brought tears to our eyes logistic companies have made urgent arrangements and it didn't return us 48 to be did live it the 3 telecoms operators ensured telecommunications services for newly built a spitters was 5 g. that gets people from around the country have actively raised funds in the supply house and have them sent to the front. netizens keep cherry r. and the medical workers on social media platforms was uplifting messages like stay strong. fight. and we are always by your side. on years been listening to she feigned the commissioner of china's foreign ministry in hong kong speaking about his government's response to the coronavirus well he's been talking about the united front that the chinese are pushing forward and i want to go back now to stephen vines who is a political commentator and journalist who is currently sitting in hong kong where that press conference is taking place stephen what do you make of this chinese narrative of what's going on this this whole idea that everyone is united in the fight against the coronavirus. well i mean it is chinese propaganda one o one i mean there are elements of truth there's been an enormous amount of self-sacrifice particularly among workers but there's also been appalling stories of official neglect officials trying to block the news for example of congress porters were arrested trying to cover what was happening in import and in fact every good story and there are some good stories coming out so we had this these hellish storms for example this appalling story of a teenage boy a cerebral palsy whose parents were infected by the virus was left on his own and died because he couldn't feed himself he couldn't wash himself he couldn't move his arms who were supposed to look after it couldn't get to him because she too was infected with the virus and the local officials who were supposed to be looking after him simply did nothing in a period of 6 days and so there's all sorts of a calling narratives coming out of will and that some of the good ones which are were mentioned which we've just heard stephen how do we know that the story is that that we're hearing our trail as we were saying earlier lots of rumor abounding how is it possible to verify what's going on in places where things are actually locked down. very difficult i mean this is the problem it's very very difficult i mean actually the level of information that's coming out even in this outbreak compared say with the sars outbreak which was in 20032004 seems to be under tighter control there's less reliable information coming from the chinese mainland but you have very courageous people like dr lee who we talked about earlier who have simply taken to social media until they're taken down and posted information the problem is some of this information is verifiable but surely it is and it is not a clear situation at all not a care situation and a lot of anger and paranoia as well stephen vines there a political commentator who's been speaking to us from hong kong thank you for joining us stephen. hall moving on to other news now in the united states says it's killed the leader of al qaeda in the arabian peninsula during a military operation in yemen last month president donald trump says cassim out raimi was seeking to conduct and inspire attacks against americans and gaga has all the latest from washington d.c. . well the news is just emerging the confirmation of this al qaeda leader's death is just emerging but the strike itself took place last month at the cia and american intelligence officials have been very carefully after previous strikes proved that their targets actually survived them so they were careful to check whether this is actually happening but all really is a significant target for the u.s. authorities he's one of the few al qaeda leaders predates the attacks of september the 11th the training camps in afghanistan before going back home to yemen where he was in prison for 5 years for plotting to attack the u.s. ambassador that he actually broke out of jail in 2006 is thought to be behind the attack on the u.s. embassy and is a significant target for the u.s. authorities so we do now have confirmation that the 41 year old was killed in these attacks in this drone strike in fact was a $10000000.00 reward out for him and the u.s. state department says that al qaeda has now been significantly weakened by this strike meaning that both americans and allies on now say for upon his death well let's not speak to lawrence korb he joins us live from washington d.c. he's a senior fellow at the center for american progress and also a former u.s. assistant secretary of defense mr korb talk us through how a raid like this is carried out and then the death confound. well basically what happens we have forces people on the ground there that track the movements of a lot of these leaders they provide this information to the u.s. government and we use drone strikes the cia killed them with drone strikes as your commentator mentioned a lot of times we'll bomb but we don't get the person so that's why even though it probably occurred a week ago we wanted to send people into make sure that in fact he had been killed we've been doing this we did it. we did it with the law 7 and we did it with al baghdadi that we always go after these leaders and try and keep track of them because it's when you get them it's symbolic it shows that the united states and its allies are not just going to sit there and let these people continue to wreck havoc our amy's death is a significant in the branch of al qaeda that he led how strong is that branch and how capable is it of carrying out attacks in the west as the white house is saying well al qaeda in the arabian peninsula is the strongest component of al qaeda and you may remember several years ago we killed an american citizen. because he was plotting to blow up some of our airliners so no it is probably the most dangerous in terms of being able to hit outside the region well al raimi himself has been around for some time he was involved with al qaeda even before the 911 attacks so what happens now presumably someone will take its place that does this make the group more vulnerable going forward or could we see retaliation. well basically he took over he was the head of the military branch of al qaeda in the arabian peninsula and then when we killed his predecessor then he moved up i'm sure somebody else is going to move up and in some time that name will become familiar i do think it does set them back at least temporarily and also probably given what's happening in yemen where we're trying to get a peace arrangement there could end up with that no longer being a branch of al qaeda in yemen if the hutus in the saudis can come up with some sort of arrangement when i say i also say that the strike allegedly happened around the time of that drone strike on iranian general sort of money and also an apparently unsuccessful attempt on another senior iranian official in yemen do you think this is a particular focus of the trumpet ministration at the moment to take out these military leaders and does it represent some kind of strategic shift. well there's no doubt about the fact that in fact the president likes to if you will almost you know brag about you know doing these things he did it in a state of the union address that i'm sure he was hoping if they could ferment before before that because recently what he does the al-qaeda leader has thought he's taken responsibility for the saudi military person who killed 3 american soldiers sailors at the pensacola naval air station and he also talked to trump back in 2017 you may remember when trump 1st came in we tried to get them and not only do we not get them but an american service person was killed and then he came out and said this goes to show you know you don't know what you're doing you're not ready for the job and and we're going to be able to defeat you. mr called i do want to ask you about iran me himself what kind of a legacy does he leave and the imagination of the people who he's been leading. well i think he leaves a legacy as been pointed out he was in afghanistan working with bin laden before the attacks of 911 he came back to yemen and got put in jail then broke out basically and then took all you started out you know worked on al qaeda in the arabian peninsula which has tried to have attacks all over the world blowing up an american. airliner so i think you know he is very significant to the extent that al qaeda still exists because now you've got other groups like isis for example that in fact he was the preeminent leader and he got this frame when he tore into trump back and 2017 and then just did took responsibility for what happened that american naval air base so very significant indeed lawrence korb there a former u.s. assistant secretary of defense thank you for joining us again on al-jazeera insta called thank you for having me now the u.s. president has used profane language to attack his political rivals during a speech celebrating his acquittal on impeachment charges an unrepentant donald trump described the proceedings as corrupt and run by deputy cops and as i was house correspondent candy how could reports the address could set the tone for his whole 2020 alexion campaign. one day after the u.s. senate voted not to remove the u.s. president from office donald trump was in the mood to celebrate i've done things wrong in my life i will admit not purposely but i've done things wrong. but this is what the end result is. trouble railed against opposition democrats who launched the impeachment effort against him times using language that was derogatory and profane. it was all both. of you trying to coerce an ally into helping him cheat trump took aim at congressman adam schiff who led the inquiry into whether trump abused his presidential powers by withholding military aid to ukraine in an attempt to get them to investigate his political rival former vice president joe biden a corrupt politician named adam schiff made up my statement to the ukrainian president he brought it out of thin air just made it up they say he's a screenwriter a failed screenwriter donald j. trump earlier that day at a national prayer breakfast trump also went after mitt romney who was the only republican senator who voted to remove trump from office he also lashed out at house speaker nancy pelosi i don't like people who use their faith as justification for doing what they know is wrong. pelosi blasted the president in response and paid hard for him because he's so off the track of our constitution but throughout trumps more than an hour long remarks he repeatedly maintained he committed no wrongdoing it was a sharp contrast to president bill clinton's more than a minute long statement in 1999 following his own impeachment acquittal i want to say again to the american people. how profoundly sorry i am. for what i said and did to trigger these events thank you. troubles only apology came not to americans but to his family who he says has been caught up in allegations and investigations since the start of his presidency i want to apologize to my family for having them have to go through. if only rotten deal well the impeachment trial may be over the allegations are not both democrats and republicans are valid to take this case to american voters in november who will ultimately decide if donald trump is a one or 2 term president can really help get al-jazeera the white house while staying in the u.s. in the chair of the democratic national committee has called for a review of the results of the iowa caucuses after days of technical delays we have 100 percent of votes finally counted people to dish has narrowly defeated bernie sanders in the 1st contest between the democratic contenders vying to take on president trump in november but the d.n.c. says a review is needed to assure public confidence after technical glitches in its mobile app slowed down the reporting of the results now at least 5 civilians have been killed as fighting intensifies in syria's last rebel held stronghold turkey has sent more reinforcements to the northwest province of it in an attempt to stop the syrian government's advances has set up for new military posts after a rare confrontation between turkey and syria on monday 7 turkish soldiers and a turkish civilian member of the military were killed during that fighting 13 syrian government soldiers also died while the united nations security council has met to discuss that situation in northwest syria the open briefing was requested by the u.s. u.k. and france in light of the escalating violence on the ground there. james bays. you know if you're. the last and most bloody chance to syria is. to take place in. the security council have now been told that is happening will be the humanitarian catastrophe that is general as long. this is called thing totally unacceptable human suffering and endangering international peace and security the bombing and shelling have forced hundreds of thousands more people to move in the attempt to find safety we now estimate that 586000 people have moved in the last 2 months they are mostly children this emergency meeting was called by the us france and the u.k. i think the worse nightmare on it live has come to pass the u.s. counterpart ended her speech with these words i want to close now by speaking directly to the syrian people. yes these are dark days of that there can be no doubt but you are not alone and you are not forgotten but after 9 years of war no one could blame the people of it for feeling abandoned and betrayed by the world the security council is not protected them in fact one permanent member is directly militarily involved in the onslaught they're facing jamesburg 0 of the united nations. you're watching al-jazeera let's remind you of the top stories this hour a chinese doctor who was among the fastest sound the alarm on the corona virus outbreak has now died from it when young was accused of scaremongering by police when he 1st posted about it on a local messaging app back in december at least 638 people have now died from the virus. the u.s. says it's killed the leader of al qaeda in the arabian peninsula during a military operation in yemen donald trump says cozumel raimi was thinking to conduct and inspire attacks against americans. the u.s. president has also used profane language to attack his political rivals during a speech celebrating his acquittal on impeachment charges donald trump described the proceedings as corrupt and run by dirty cops. now the israeli army says it's sending about a 1000 more soldiers into the occupied west bank after a surge in violence there over the past 24 hours there in tasha's between palestinians and israeli security forces in several cities after 4 palestinians were shot dead in separate incidents made abraham reports. 6 it's been the deadliest 24 hour period in the occupied west bank in a strongly rejected the plan they say it's means them accepting this radio station and the status quo. analysts say the general mood in the west bank is that the frustration i think that there is going to be continuity for a while for some actions because i think the palestinian public wanted to show that the palestinian people are against this deal and that this deal is compromising the legitimate rights of the palestinian people and the land but i don't think that it will continue on the long. late on thursday the israeli army said it arrested the palestinian it says it rammed his car into israeli soldiers in jerusalem. the attack has left 12 israeli soldiers wounded one of whom sustained severe injuries it's not clear whether tension will escalate frustrate has been mounting for a long al-jazeera the occupied west bank. now drug addiction in afghanistan is an issue often overshadowed by the as an armed conflict in that country in the 2 decades following the u.s. invasion the number of addicts has risen now some members of the taliban have stepped in to provide rehabilitation services but that comes with its own cost saying rebels ravi has this exclusive report. iraq city western afghanistan. these men just a few of the millions of addicts in the country today the latest you would figure suggest women and children are as much at risk of ending up like this addicted to opium heroin morphine crystal but. even with their high these video where it could lead. sarin every night one or 2 are dying here they are very young and they do not have any family they were once very useful citizens and were not like this before but now their life is in a severe condition and i worry about them if someone will not take care of them they will also die. this is what a lost generation of afghans looks like. a splinter group of the taliban says it has a moral duty to do something in heroics belt in caves they've been running a drug rehabilitation center for 4 years addicts go through what passes for detox here several months of cold showers and long walks in freezing weather a taliban commander offers islam a teachings for inspiration and pain killers for is that all sides of the conflict make money dealing drugs criminal gangs armed groups including the taliban as well as the governments and militaries of neighboring countries. who are traffickers and more recent efforts to end the war. but how those in power now deal with have got a starts drug problem analysts agree will dramatically influence the future of the afghan people. are a couple. brazil's far right president is proposing a bill that would open up indigenous land to mining agriculture and energy projects now the bill which has yet to receive congressional approval has already drawn strong criticism from both environmentalists and indigenous groups they say could wipe out their communities and speed up deforestation also narrow is accusing the critics of hindering development glued to this is a big step forward it depends on congress but we will face pressure from environmentalist those people from the environment right if i could one day i would confined them to the amazon of the likely environment so much well i spoke to christian who is the program director at amazon watch and he travels to the brazilian amazon regularly and he told me that this bill seeks to sideline indigenous communities. also not was proposed bill brazenly violates brazil's constitution which guarantees the right of its indigenous peoples to consultation this is the kind of consultation that his minister of mines of energy has said will be but a formality and not be carried out the rigorous manner that the constitution guarantees in addition to international labor organization convention $169.00 which also in trying is the right to consultation indigenous people to have this right and shrine in the constitution and other international conventions and they're demanding it today much to incur in opposition to oppose or not it was trying to ram down their throats but both are not always doing here is he's pushing brazil up or reputational cliff by trying to open up indigenous territories which are the best preserved territories in the brazilian amazon to industrial activity which is highly destructive not only to the environment but also to the culture of indigenous peoples he sending a signal that this government lives outside of the law that it will do anything to encourage what it considers to be development by destroying the forest and destroying indigenous territories the government is actually sending a signal to investors that if they want to be responsible with their money they need to look elsewhere now staying in brazil where a federal judge has delayed a decision on charges that janice glenn greenwald's was involved in the alleged phone hacking of high profile politicians now green will publish text messages revealing alleged corruption by authorities including the justice minister prosecutors accuse the journalist of illegally helping to acquire the material but the judge cited a supreme court order shielding greenwald from investigation now a rural community in mexico has sparked controversy after images were published of children as young as 18 years old chris had to fight alongside members of the community defense militia mano republican ports from mexico city. these young boys from the mexican state of get a nato are learning combat techniques there's no. doubt they are the newest and youngest recruits of the community run militia their ages range from $8.00 to $12.00 this is we can't even go outside because the school we used to go to is in another town controlled by criminal gangs and if we go there we could be kidnapped . many of the boys say violence in their communities has grown out of hand they're afraid to go back to school and have traded their textbooks for rifles. i joined the community police force to help my people in my family they've told me a lot about guns and about how to defend. last year there were nearly 1600 homicides registered and get little according to official sources. violence has become so common many residents see no other choice than to put firearms in the hands of anyone able to wield them no poking who is to let you know doing this because we like guns. the work field over a wide for all families we had doing these out of necessity because the government has failed to keep our communities safe. no recent images of
