praises donald trump's mideast peace plan a day ahead of his son veiling but the palestinians reject it also this hour the u.s. military says it's investigating after a plane with u.s. markings crashes in afghanistan's ghastly projects i'm barbara starr in london with the top stories from europe including 75 years after al schmitz was liberated survivor isn't sure the horrors of the holocaust are never forgotten. and on peter similar the school stalls from the basketball world and beyond remember kobe bryant's off to the n.b.a. store and he's going to die of along with 7 of those in a helicopter crash in telephone. donald trump's legal team is set to begin a 2nd day of augments in defense of the president at his impeachment trial in the senate the republican majority is under renewed pressure to allow witnesses and more documents following revelations surrounding former national security adviser john bolton in a league strapped of his book bolton reportedly claims the president told him to tie ukrainian military aide to an investigation into his political rival joe biden trump has denied these claims let's go straight to heidi on capitol hill for us so the trial about to resume there heidi how damaging are bolton's claims to the president's defense team. well foley remains to be seen whether those new allegations from bolton will make its way make their way into the trial at all to see exactly what sort of legal damage they may do to the president but certainly washington is still reeling over these revelations what the national former national security adviser john bolton is alleging in this leaked manuscript is that he had a conversation with president trump back in august in which trump said he would continue withholding security aid to ukraine until ukraine announced investigations into the bidens now that is the very claim that trump has been denying he says that getting the dirt on his political opponents was not linked to the security hold on ukraine he said that it was undergoing an authorized and legal review of that military aid to ukraine but this certainly does introduce perhaps the 1st 1st hand evidence that directly links those 2 things together this all came out as part of this book manuscript that bolton has been writing since he was fired or left the white house he's no longer an employee there and president trump has responded denying those allegations and casting bolton as a disgruntled former employee but the real question again is how this will impact the trial we just heard from democrats in the senate who said this is more reason than ever for republicans to agree to subpoena bolton as a new witness to this trial he has not shared any of these claims previous to this leaked manuscript and several republicans to moderates at least have said this does bolster the argument to extend the trial to include hearing bolton's testimony and key to all of this foley is actually another voice lindsey graham he is a staunch supporter of president trump another republican senator and he too has said that he wants to at least see the manuscript from self indicating that he wants to know more about what bolton has to say before he considers whether or not to call bolton to testify so the likelihood of that happening of john bolton actually being called as a witness. right this is moving very quickly but we will have an answer to that at least by the end of this week because as you said this is day 2 of the president's defense attorneys giving their opening statements for his innocence that will last until tomorrow afterwards we'll have a quick question question and answer session with senators and then by the end of this week that pivotal question for the senators a vote on whether or not to call more witnesses if the answer to that question is yes then democrats will quickly move to subpoena john bolton perhaps as the 1st witness but in order for that to happen at least 4 of those republican senators would have to agree to open the trial to witnesses a likelihood that seems a little bit more likely after these bolton revelations all right thank you for that. live for us on capitol hill and as we wait for the child to resume in the u.s. senate's the impeachment trial and speak to jeffrey kubba service who is live in washington he's the director of political studies at the this kind and center a center right think tank thank you so much for joining us so democrats want to call john bolton as a witness would his testimony be a game changer in this trial. i think john bolton's testimony would in fact be a game changer in the senate given that a large part of president trump's defenders have said that the democrats in the house did not produce any direct 1st hand witnesses to any conversations that would have involved pressure on ukraine by trump to investigate the bidens and now here is john bolton apparently from his forthcoming memoir saying that he was there when trump said this was precisely why the aid to ukraine was being withheld so if bolton that were subpoenaed and did testify in the senate it would make life more difficult particularly for the more vulnerable senators and particularly those who are up for re-election i don't know that this would necessarily change the ultimate outcome of trump's exoneration by the senate but it would be a game changer the president's attorneys are expected to argue that he had valid reasons for withholding military aid to ukraine what reasons might be put forward to think well the reasons that the president's attorneys have put forward why he did have valid reasons for withholding aid to ukraine was that he was concerned about corruption generally in ukraine which is indeed one of the countries that typically comes near the top of the international corruption indexes year and also that he was concerned that other ukrainian supporters particularly in europe were not doing their sufficient bit to help support the country but it's notable that in the telephone conversation that trump did have with. alinsky none of this was actually mentioned all that trump mentioned was that he wanted the ukrainian president to do him donald trump a favor by investigating the bidens so this defense does not seem particularly convincing on the face of it the geoffrey thomas service if as you say the outcome is known and is expected that president. you know will be exonerated even with a damaging bolton testimony then what's the point of all this i mean is it ultimately the u.s. election that's at stake here. i think what's at stake in this impeachment trial is ultimately the 2020 election and democrats are hoping if they don't realistically believe the trunk can be removed in this trial that at least the trial will prove damaging to critical independent and moderate republican supporters that trump needs particularly in the swing states in the forthcoming election however there's a longer term issue which is that the republican party may actually lose a considerable amount of credibility in the course of this trial even if trump is exonerated and that's because if they are seen to cover up evidence if they are seen to oppose the calling of witnesses such as bolton who are willing to testify against the trump team's narrative if they're willing to disregard what seems like evidence and truth then this will cost the republicans some support that they will critically need not just in the presidential elections but in the congressional elections and all the way down the ballot as well all right thank you very much for speaking to us thank you for your time jeffrey joining us there live from washington and we take you to the senate floor where the impeachment trial of president is resuming with his legal team expected to resume its defense that's listening. mr justice. pursuant to the provisions of senate resolution 483 the counsel for the president have 22 hours and 5 minutes remaining to make the presentation of their case the senate will now hear you. say. thank you mr chief justice members of the senate. managers. what we've done on saturday is the pattern but we're going to continue today as far as how we're going to deal with the case. we deal with transcript evidence we deal with publicly available information we do not deal with speculation allegations. that are not based on evidentiary standards at all we're going to highlight some of those very facts we talked about very quickly. on saturday you're going to hear more about that i want to give you a little bit of an overview of what we plan to do today in our presentation you will hear from a number of lawyers each one of these lawyers will be addressing a particular aspect of the president's case i will introduce the issues that they're going to discuss and then that individual lawyer will come up and make their presentation we want to do this on a expeditious but yet thorough basis let me start with just for a very brief few moments to take a look at where we were one of the things that became very clear to us as we looked at the presentation from the house managers was the lack of focus on that july 25th transcript and that's because the transcript actually doesn't say what they would like it to say now we've heard and you will hear more about that in the days ahead we know about mr ships version of the transcript you heard it you saw i want to keep coming back to facts facts that are really undisputed the president in his conversation was clear on a number of points but so was president solicitor i met i mentioned that at the close of my arguments earlier that it was president's alinsky that said no pressure i don't feel any pressure and again as this kind of reading of minds what were people were saying i think we need to look at what they actually said and how it's backed up it is our position as the president's counsel that the president was all time acting under constitutional authority under his legal authority in our national interest and pursuant to his oath of office asking a foreign leader to get to the bottom of issues of corruption is not a violation of an oath. it was interesting because there was a lot of discussion the other day about lieutenant colonel binman and one of the things that we reiterate is that he himself said there was he did not know if there was anything of a crime or anything of that nature he had deep policy concerns and i think that is what this is really about is deep policy concerns deep policy differences but we live in a constitutional republic where you have deep policy concerns and deep differences that should not be the basis of an impeachment if the bar of impeachment is not reached that level then for the sake of the republic the danger that puts not just this body but our entire constitutional framework and is a manageable we can have every time there's a policy difference of significance or an approach difference of significance about a policy we're going to start an impeachment proceeding we know as i said earlier i don't really think this was about just a phone call. there was a pattern in practice of attempts over a 3 year period to not only interfere with the president's capability to govern which by the way they were completely unsuccessful at his look at the state of where we are as a country but also interfere with our constitutional framework i'm going to say this because i want to be brief we are going to have a series of lawyers address you so will not be one lawyer for hours and hours we have a series of lawyers address you on a variety of issues this is how we envision the president's defense going we thought it would be appropriate to start with an overview if you will of some of the significant historical issues constitutional issues involving impeachment proceeding since we don't have a long history of that and i think that's good for the country that we don't and i think we would all agree. but if this becomes the new standard the future's going to look a lot different so we're going to hear next from my co-counsel judge kenneth starr judge starr is a former judge for the u.s. court of appeals for the district of columbia he serves the 39th solicitor general of the united states arguing cases before the supreme court of the united states on behalf of the united states i had the privilege of arguing a case alongside judge starr we're talking about earlier many years ago. he also served as the independent counsel during the clinton presidency and authored the starr report he testified for almost 12 hours before the judiciary committee with regard to that report judge starr is very familiar with this process he is going to address a series of deficiencies or legal issues with regard to article one and 2 constitutional implications historical implications and legal implications of where this case. now stands so i would like to yield my time right now to if the police chief justice can start. starr. thank you mr chief justice. house managers and staff members of the senate. the majority leader the minority leader. at the beginning of these proceedings on january 16th the chief justice administered the oath of office to the members of this body and then again on tuesday. and doing so the chief justice was honoring the words of our constitution article one section 3 we all know the 1st sentence of that article by heart. the senate shall have the so power to try all impeachments. with and the constitutional text goes on to say this when sitting for that purpose they shall be on earth oath or affirmation that of us or affirmation. in turn requires each member of the senate to do impartial justice. and this constitutionally administered of her affirmation has been given in every proceeding in this body since 1798. and deed to signify the importance of the occasion the senate's more recent traditions call for you as you did to sign the book and that book is not simply part of the record it's intrusted to the national archives. in contrast members of the house of representatives do not take an oath in connection with impeachment the framers of our constitution well knew when and oath or affirmation should be required the senate yes the house know and thus each member of the world's greatest deliberative body now has special indeed unique duties and obligations the duties imposed under our founding documents. during the clinton impeachment trial 21 years ago in this chamber the chief justice of the united states ruled in response to an objection that was interposed. by senator tom harkin of iowa. the senators are not sitting as jurors so they are harken noted and the chief justice agreed with that proposition rather the senate is a court in fact history teaches us that for literally decades this body was referred to in this context as the high court of impeachment so we're not in a legislative chamber during these proceedings were and i tribunals were in court in federalist 78 alexander hamilton has been quoted frequently in these proceedings but in federal a $78.00 he was describing the role of courts and your role and in doing so he distinguished between what he called the exercise of judgment on the one hand which is what courts to and the exercise of will or policy preferences if you will on the other hand that's what legislative bodies to. according to hamilton courts were to be in his word impartial there's that word again and you know that's a daunting task for judges struggling to do the right thing to be impartial equal justice under law it's certainly hard in life to be impartial in politics it's not even asked of one to be impartial. but that's the task that the constitution chose to impose upon each of you. and significant way in this particular juncture in america's history the senate is being called to set. as the high court of impeachment all too frequently. and we're living in what i think can be described as the age of impeachment if you're just joining us on al-jazeera we've been watching the proceedings on the senate floor where u.s. president donald trump's legal team has resumed its defense in his impeachment trial speaking right now is ken starr one of the president's lawyers who was also the independent counsel during the clinton impeachment trial back in 1909 we heard from the president's personal lawyer jay sekulow who said that a number of lawyers a series of lawyers will be addressing the senators during the president's defense time and he says that they intend to show overwhelming evidence that the president did nothing wrong let's bring in heidi. who's on capitol hill for us following all these proceedings heidi we are listening of course of the president's defense team but everyone's thinking about john bolton and his claims that are allegedly made in his upcoming book and how damaging they'll be to the president's defense team so far no mention of any witnesses by the president's legal team. that's right no mention of the 2 words john bolton which of course is the name that's on everyone's lips here in d.c. today after those revelations a quick synopsis of what they say is the new york times reporting that in his upcoming book he has submitted a manuscript that has now leaked and in it bolton who is the former national security advisor to trump he alleges that in an oval office confirmation con conversation back in august that trump told told him that he would not resume security 80 ukraine until and unless you crane announced investigations into the bidens of course the heart of the argument that democrats are making to remove the president from office is they say that request was corrupt that it was president trying trying to get dirt on his political opponents for his personal interest to get a leg up in the upcoming presidential elections and that the act of withholding the aid put u.s. national interests in threat as well because it was denying a key u.s. ally of military aid so all of this is information that is now floating around in the public sphere but it has not been traduced as evidence in this trial it's in fact news that just broke less than 24 hours ago however democrats are hoping to incorporate this into use that as evidence against the president they can only do so if they're able to convince at least 4 republican senator call leaves to vote with the democrats and open this trial to additional witnesses and of course witness number one will be no one less than john bolton himself bolton has said that he would comply with a subpoena if issued one to appear before the set it as part of this impeachment trial so that's where we are now you're going to expect to hear another few hours of opening statements from the. it's defense team you heard them focusing on their the same defenses that they outlined on saturday which was their day one of taking the stage saying that the president did nothing wrong the call transcript between president trump and the president of ukraine didn't directly link the investigations with the security aide it'll be interesting to see if they update at all their defense given this new breaking news from john bolton thank you for that heidi and we'll be checking in with you for the latest there from capitol hill. now all this is happening on a very busy day for president donald trump who's been meeting with the israeli prime minister at the white house ahead of the unveiling of his long awaited mideast peace plan the israeli prime minister has said that the mideast peace plan is an opportunity for the center for a century and it's now is in washington as we've said to discuss this peace plan has arrived a few hours ago the u.s. president will also meet these early opposition leader benny gantz not despite the plan already being rejected by the palestinians traum has insisted it's very good for them it's due to be unveiled on tuesday it's something they should want they probably won't want it initially but i think in the end they will i think in the end they're going to want it it's very good for them in fact it's overly good to them so we'll see what happens now without them we don't do the deal and that's ok they're not living well as you know we cut off aid to palestinians and something i don't like to do but we did that and we think that there's a very good chance that they're going to want this that the deal of the century is the opportunity of the century and we're not going to pass a book. that will talk about that tomorrow or today i repeat i just want to thank you for everything you've done for the state of israel. well iran's foreign minister has weighed in saying that instead of a delusional deal of the century which will be deal way dead on arrival south described champions of democracy would do better to accept iran simak radek solution proposed by ayatollah ali how many and that is a referendum whereby all palestinians muslims jew or christian decide their future let's bring in our white house correspondent kimberly halkett so kimberly this unveiling of this deal the so-called deal of the century a long awaited presentation happening on a busy day on capitol hill the trial the impeachment trial resuming there and i imagine this is a much needed destruction for both president and promise and it's now. well there's certainly speculation to that and that the u.s. president coordinated this in an effort to try and detract from the impeachment headlines that are generating all around this administration and the senate trial taking place under way on capitol hill but there's also the accusation that the president is doing this to help the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu in advance of yet another round of israeli elections set to take place in early march in fact the u.s. president was asked about this whether or not this was even election interference in something that he has denied in fact saying that the reason this is not election interference in the israelis elections because he's also invited the bitter rival of netanyahu the blue and white chairman benny gantz so there certainly are the accusations this is nothing more than a cheap political stunt stunt to help netanyahu and to detract perhaps from those corruption allegations that he's dealing with as well in the end the president is trying to focus he says on this mideast peace plan that as you point out there's also skepticism surrounding given the fact that the palestinians have largely been not been consulted in this effort to bring about this proposal really thank you very much for the moment can really have good life for us at the white house and the u.s. says one of its military planes has crashed in afghanistan the aircraft a u.s. bombardier went down in the eastern gosney province it happened in mountainous terrain which is a party controlled by the taliban early in the taliban it's a high ranking u.s. security personnel were on board and that everyone was killed it speaks about eco hand in washington about this party what else is the pentagon saying about this crash. well the pentagon just about 5 minutes ago released their 1st statement acknowledging that this plane crash it's an air force 11 and that it crashed and it doesn't necessarily it doesn't say that the taliban is claiming responsibility for downing their craft because we haven't actually seen the taliban say that but they do say that there's no indication this was brought down by enemy fire but that they are going to continue to investigate now they do dispute a claim made by the taliban that there was another aircraft that crashed in the same area they said no other military aircraft were downed or went down in that area at the same time so what do we know about this well the taliban claim that there were high ranking officials intelligence officials on board it's possible but not likely because this is a plane and if you look at it it looks strangely not like a military plane at all that's because it isn't it's really it was meant to be a private jet and the military realized they had a communications problem so they retrofitted this bombardier they aimed at the $118.00 there's only 4 of them in afghanistan and what they do is they have this package on board called the b. a c. and battlefield air airborne communications node that's where the plane looks somewhat unusual what it is is the way the air force describes it is it sort of like providing wife in the sky because for the military some of their planes can't talk to each other the communication systems don't work and it's hard to get those communications because of the mountainous region so this flies above and allows pilots to talk to people on the ground and back to headquarters so that is what was we believe crash that's what the pentagon says crashed and it is under investigation so no word on casualties but this is not necessarily considered a transport plane patty thank you very much for that. in other world news lebannon spot aminta spots its 2020 budget as it tries to lift the country out of a deep need konami crisis protesters have tried to block politicians from getting to the vote many rejected the budget as it had been discussed and amended by the previous administration why police were deployed and some demonstrators were physically removed from the ottoman precincts to hire atas in beirut she says protesters didn't expect the budget to be approved so quickly. they've actually finally ratified this much to date budget which was put in by the heavy government they had made some amendments to in december this new government was quite seemed to keen rather to get it through a soon as possible it was meant to be a 2 day session and everyone out here the protesters have been quite surprised at how quickly they managed to ratify and find the speaker of parliament earlier had said that it was it was important to for everyone to remain in parliament and get this done as soon as possible because of the heights and security situation and we've just spoken to some protesters post the ratification of this budget and they said that it's too damn is just a big shot is a representation of the old government and it's just new faces very very concerned they said that the budget has been approved is of the pre protest time which meant that the economy was not so good at the time but it's gotten so much worse since then a few last month a similar story last week the finance minister had put out an appeal saying that they need $4.00 to $5000000000.00 of foreign soft loans just to buy the basics for the next year and that includes weeks we're talking about fuel we're talking medicine people salaries that we've been speaking to say that the value of the near has much to be dropped if we lost about 30 to 40 percent of their income so the protesters that we've been speaking to today have said that they're not going to be going anywhere but they are also concerned they spit at how the security forces are tightening in on them and there have been some clashes in fact a few people ended up in hospital and yesterday. and basketball fans around the world are mourning the loss of superstar n.b.a. player kobe bryant has been killed in a helicopter crash in california his teenaged daughter and 7 others also on board die rob reynolds reports from calabasas just this. kobe bryant's helicopter disintegrated on the skills it says. it's. witnesses said there was heavy fog and poor visibility in the area at the time of the accident resident paula dolan heard multiple explosions before the helicopter went down wired one bang one it was in the air and the last 2nd their 2nd bang as it was just sunday and then i heard a huge crash on board with a 41 year old retired superstar and his 13 year old daughter giana as well as 7 others including the pilot the cause of the crash is unknown the helicopter a sikorsky $76.00 b. has a robust safety record federal crash investigators will search the wreckage and war our team will be looking at the history of the pilots and whatever crew was on board will be looking at maintenance records of the helicopter bryant's prowess thrilled fans in l.a. and beyond for 2 decades a crowd has gathered here below the crash site many people are wearing lakers colors purple and gold some people say it's as if a piece of their lives have been ripped apart even more than you can imagine and you can put in words just the passion and the grit in the sweat and blood he's giving to lausanne just for the basketball family yes i can say the young words he is it was an eye it all everyone loved um l.a. is very sad right now he is just he was he was not great player that's a reason why i got into baseball kind of and that's why i have his jersey it's still like unbelievable for me to say that kobe bryant is not here with us anymore it's just tragedy it's just it i'm no words honestly. president donald trump tweeted bryant was one of the truly great basketball players of all time the loss of his beautiful daughter giana makes this moment even more devastating president barack obama an avid basketball fan said koby was a legend on the court and was just getting started in what would have been just as meaningful a 2nd act amid an outpouring of sorrow from players from across the spectrum of sports players from the euston rockets and the denver nuggets held a moment of silence before their game on sunday players looked down shaking their heads he leaves behind a sport that is grieving a city in mourning and a legacy of greatness that will be remembered as long as basketball is played. and we now go live to rob reynolds was outside the staples center where the massage a snake is a horse playing in downtown los angeles rob tell us 1st about what's been happening this sample centers because kobe bryant's home of course i imagine a lot of people there a lot of emotional. it is an emotional scene fall of course the staples center which is just across the way from where i am now was the place where koby bryant thrilled so many fans over the course of 20 years now people have come here to pay their respects and i'll just step out of the way so that our cameraman steve smith can show you a bit of the scene here there are people who have laid flowers balloons lit candles and. come to pray they come to. pay their respects of course there's a lot of media many reporters and photographers here as well there's really a somber mood here people are very quiet for the most part although occasionally a chant will break out in kobe's name more people chanting m.v.p. m.v.p. of course bryant's death that such a young age shocked this city very much not to mention the death tragically of his 13 year old daughter but you know basketball is one of the most widespread international sports on the planet and there are people who are grieving not only here but all around the world the sport was popular and kobe bryant was a symbol of that sport and a symbol of strength from beijing to buenos ariz but this certainly is the epicenter of grief right now and tributes have been coming in from around the world what is then they says robyn investigation do we know why and how that helicopter came down. no we don't know exactly yet but the efforts to find out the answer to that question are ongoing the national transportation safety board a federal agency as sent its investigators they are now going over the crash site looking for clues in the equipment in the the wreckage as as we discussed earlier they're also going into the maintenance logs of the sikorsky 76 the aircraft we know it was a 19 year old aircraft but it had an excellent safety record as a whole for that model of. of helicopter now conditions were poor on sunday heavy fog as low a low ceiling and we've learned that at one point it was actually so foggy that the los angeles police department which has a whole fleet of helicopters rounded its fleet they said the conditions were were so bad we've also learned that according to audio records between the helicopter and the air traffic control tower in burbank california which was along its route at one point the pilot was given what is called special visual flight rules allowing the aircraft to fly on its route despite the heavy fog the poor visibility and that decision whether that was the correct one or not is certainly to be one of the centers of the investigation as it goes forward thank you rob thank you very much rob reynolds life for a scene in asuncion assists. today mock 75 years since the liberation of the os which concentration camp in poland and then survive is returned to the former nazi site to mock a date for more let's cross a barbarous era in our european broadcast santa barbara. folley thank you some of those holocaust survivors shared their emotional testimonies that month. more than a 1000000 people mainly jews were killed that alone between 194-1945 jonah hill has more now from the ceremony this event going on as we speak now survivors giving testimony to v.i.p.'s and world leaders dignitaries other survivors and their families as well under an enormous white tend to erected over what were known as the gates of death the entrance to the camp where railway tracks brought people on cattle trucks 1100000 of them of course to their deaths the survivors giving their testimony a few who remain fewer and fewer of them of course with the passing of the years some 200 here now would be listening to a clip from one of them in just a moment and of course this is an event focused not on those world leaders and dignitaries but on the survivors themselves in the knowledge i think that this is probably the last major anniversary at which they will be any significant number of these people left to tell their stories many of them in their ninety's one of them as i mentioned a vulnerable moment 92 she spent a little over a year here she saw her parents murdered in the gas chambers she herself naturally a skate death when the gas chamber she was in had some sort of he put himself front and center of the regional campaign turning it into a nationwide battle for the lead party in a bid to consolidate the party's victory across the country spreading his presence far and wide on social media platforms in spite of it all it didn't quite happen this time while the league may not have gained a victory here in a 1000000 or manja however the fact that they are the
