In the playoffs. Would begin in iran borders have gathered in the thousands to walk among the body of custom saw the body of the Iranian Military commander assassinated by a u. S. Airstrike in iraq on friday a short time ago body arrived in the city of mashad where tens of thousands of whitey his death has dramatically escalated tensions around the region on sunday donald trump issued a warning threatening to hit dozens of targets inside iran if it retaliates against the u. S. And in the iraqi capital there were several rocket attacks one exploded in the heavily fortified green zone with the u. S. Embassy is located 2 other rockets hit close to an iraqi base where there are u. S. Troops and contract. Crowds as weve reported are gathered in mashad at the shrine of reza are indorsed jabari joins us live from the now endorser after the initial shock some solo on his death this is a chance for people to pay their respects what hes saying. Well the. 5 anguish and. Sadness through the menu here still do the most good the long you can and there are the people who say that they still cant believe that hes gone and the day was killed so very much a shock so here are they wouldnt but he didnt get to ride his body just landed after Sunset Airport and look at it then it will take about 2 hours for a coffin to make it to 2 and longer that shrine where your ears are lined up along the route from the airport to the. We seem to last. Of course that position in the morning session. I will try to get back to iran and if we can really go to some other folks in is live now in the rocky capital and some other tell us about the significance 1st of all of those recent rocket attacks what more we learned. Well one of these rocket attacks hit. One of them inside the fortified green zone and one of them across the river tigris in the. Neighborhood and the other rocket attacks hit a military base around 80 kilometers north of baghdad there were no casualties and these rocket attacks are not really something new they are among a series of similar attacks 13 to be precise that weve seen over the past 2 months aimed at military bases where u. S. Personnel are stationed in the u. S. Has accused Iranian Armed groups for perpetrating these attacks including the hezbollah brigades now for us this comes at a time of grave concern and fear over escalation between the u. S. And iran on iraqi soil we have not just heard. Threats of retaliation from iran but also from iranian groups. Groups inside iraq for example the hezbollah they issued a statement yesterday calling on iraqi forces to distance themselves from. Forces including u. S. Forces so as to not become Collateral Damage in any forthcoming attacks and now were also getting news just now of an incident taking place in the Southern City of what appears to have happened was that a symbolic funeral procession consisting of supporters of the iranian backed Popular Mobilization forces try to enter a square where antigovernment protesters have camped out for months now and these. That tried to prevent this procession from entering and then the supporters opened fire at demonstrators killing excuse me injuring at least 4 people and this is perhaps an important time to explain the difference between these 2 crowds because on the one hand we have these funeral processions which at least in iraq consisted mostly of p. M. S. Supporters and on the other hand we have these crowds that have been demonstrating against the government and against iranian influence in iraq and some of the parliament is holding an emergency session will anything more you can tell us about the. This emergency session was called by a Prime Minister in reaction to the assassinations of stolen money and the hundreds who is the 2nd in charge of the Popular Mobilization of forces here in iraq and the objective of the session is to discuss the possibility of expelling foreign including u. S. Troops from iraq now there are 2 possible ways that this might unfold montt of them is basically the reversal of the ratification of an agreement that already exists between the u. S. And iraq and this is a very broad agreement that talks about political and military cooperation also economic and cultural cooperation it is a very general agreement that does not really specify the number of u. S. Troops in country does not specify what these troops are supposed to be doing and i understand that there is a reluctance to complete the revoke this agreement as it would basically leave the relationship between us and iraq completely undefined and based on this agreement it is also true that iraq would have to give the u. S. One year notice to actually for example remove u. S. Troops from the country the more likely option here is that the iranian backed political groups inside upon a mental draft some kind of proposal to focus on the departure of u. S. Troops from iraq what remains to be seen whether there will be quorum and what remains to be seen whether there will be enough support because for now it appears just that its just the she had groups in parliament who are backing this proposal and the kurds and the sunnis thus far appear opposed to such a move basically saying that this is a very strategic decision and not one that should be taken in haste or some other thank you some other 14 law of the. Law to dorset now in iran of course where thousands of mourners of turned out to pay their respects to custom so the body uses body is brought back on door so you were telling us before we lost you about what youre seeing there the numbers of people in hell people are paying their respects and mourning just saw the body pick up that thought for us and tell us again what were you saying talking points there. Certainly weve seen people that have come from all surrounding areas not just masha which is 2nd largest city after the capital theyre gone but people that have come from across the area close to my set of well theyre actually anxiously awaiting the arrival of us and for the money body which is currently making its way from the south airport to mammas a shrine in the center of the city people here say that they want to be able to say a proper goodbye many years see him as one of the leading figures of the Islamic Revolution and hes a man that they know who has fought for iran and its interests over the past 40 years the main sentiment that we keep hearing about over and over again we see but the people here is that there is a state of shock and disbelief and theres a lot of anger that comes after that because of the way he was killed just in the battlefield as many would have imagined one day he died but he was assassinated by a drone by the u. S. Government this is something that is very very difficult for people to fathom here because they say this is a man who fought against the u. S. In his entire life and to be taken out by us very very difficult so theyre waiting to see his coffin to pay their respects there will be a. Prayer service said in the strine once a company arrives we expect that the journey will take about 2 hours and once it arrives here people will probably have a chance to say their goodbyes where and then the body we understand will be taken back to the capital and theyll be further ceremonies theyre taking place tonight and tomorrow that will be attended by the Supreme Leader and a check on the diversity tomorrow morning and all of this of course leads up to that of the burial on tuesday endorsed the safe against the rising tensions as well were seeing the train in iran of the United States and the warnings from the Iranian Regime of retaliation of revenge words. Yes certainly theres been a 6 lot of talk a lot of increased tension in the rhetoric that weve been hearing from all sides and we heard from the head of the countries 5 that the United States cannot you would think that if they wanted to retaliate they could within the white house itself. And this is not the time to escalate tensions in the board in a certain much of all 3 as tweeted saying that what the president saying over the past 24 hours by his twitter account is to 0 already the fact that he would want to take out 52 cultural sites in iran and understand that the president making reference to number 2 because there were 52 u. S. Citizens. When the u. S. Embassy was taken over in 79 so theres a lot of rhetoric going back and forth and there is an increase the tension certainly the language that were hearing. Also heard from the head of the revolutionary guards who had said that there is absolutely no way the United States can do anything that this is just rhetoric and threats and counter threats but regardless its really a tense time i think we can sense actually. Given the events that unfolded over the past 48 hours and what has come as a result of this assassination or so thank you joining us on the line the pictures coming to you live from that procession of people mourning the body of custom so the body will take you now to kenya for a number of alshabaab has been killed during an attack on a Kenyan Military base which is also used by American Forces the bus is located in Lubbock County on the side of his cab simba alshabaab quickly responsibility for this attack is no word yet on any casualties among kenyan or u. S. Troops lets get more from the tulsa he joins us live from. Were still waiting to hear what any casualties. What more youre learning about. Well it was an audacious attack this is manned by the king and and the americans but alshabaab managed to break through right now were being told the attack is over the king as americans are now combing the area trying to find those who were responsible along with a port is closed no flak coming in or out people working near the area have been told to go home for their own security we also know for example that that particular area level county is very volatile boni forest thats where a lot of al shabaab fighters i think to be hiding and over the years the king in Defense Force theyve been going in and out trying to weed them out and theyve been casualties on both sides day that was attacked on a passenger bus traveling in that area they were ambushed by alshabaab fighters suspected also says they saw at the bus 3 people were killed and people have been told to me in that area to try and be aware stay away from dangerous hotspots like that particular area alshabaab has been gaining more ground and becoming more and more braver some people say because theyve been stepping up attacks in kenya in neighboring uganda and most recently in somalia last week there was a truck bomb explosion that killed dozens of people in the capital mogadishu alshabaab things the reason why they attacking kenyans in particular is because the kenyans are in somalia right now the king of Defense Forces and they want the king is to leave somalia there to the king and have no business in that country so right now on the ground and it seems. At the moment the attack is over but officials the king is that americans are still going through the area trying to find those who are responsible and it will for now still remains closed just a couple of things you mentioned that last month. But weve also seen. The. U. S. Forces in the past year or so what does this tell us about the capacity the resilience of a group such as al shabaab to carry out an attack inside kenya life. When you speak to. The seems to be very resolute in the way they fight is the kind of take for example the truck bomb in somalia they approached a checkpoint and they exploded. And they were wearing civilian clothing it was a normal looking truck so Security Officials couldnt really identify them until it was too late and that is how they operate they tend to be in the crowd kind of hard to spot them and it just shows that the number of tactics taping up it is harder for. Somalia officials other people in the reason to try and fight them because every time they try to push them back coming back and try to attack it was an airstrike last week in somalia the americans say they killed a couple of. Cases they didnt say who it was but there is an attempt on the ground from Foreign Forces the kenyans and the models to try and weve had these proving very very difficult in the fact that they did to attack this base. In the early hours of this morning. And we may not be so easy to weed them out and the 1st thing. Is much more to discuss about this attack. Which is a political think tank covering the horn of africa and he joins us now from the road its good to have you with us we really do need to ask you. The timing of what were seeing you all know with the United States involved with the money with iran we should be careful to not buy direct link between iran because al shabaab is a sunni group not necessarily linked to the iran but the timing is interesting is you read anything into. No i would read it and the into the timing of this attack principally because putting together an attack of this nature of this all dastardly would take a lot of planning a lot of time. And it comes at a moment when al shabaab has been especially active a lonely kenyan border making forays into kenya as we just heard attacking a civilian boss who counts the less than a week ago so there have been elements of al ship and principally a a sub unit called the jaysh i mean that is army active in la county for some time now so this seems to be a part of and ill show about campaigning that has been ongoing for a couple of months now to project its influence its force both in the border region inside somalia and into kenya as well now the united starts over the past year has increased its its attacks on al shabaab positions inside somalia so where is the message being directed yours is directed to the United States or also to kenya of course who contributed troops to the African Union forces insights about. Well i think the message here is actually the message and if that sounds a bit like a paradox this attack is very similar to. Attack in september on that joining us Somali Military base in somalia at balad dogleg which received a lot of attention this appears to be principally an Information Operations or psychological warfare operation where chabad has sent a small number of fighters to a Major Military base they may or may not have caused the destruction that they claim of aircraft and vehicles at the base or outside its perimeter but the propaganda value of having actually struck across the border hitting an american a joint kenyan American Military installation is going to be much greater than the actual damage that theyve managed to inflict and the fact that the force was so small indicates that they didnt intend to overrun the base they were looking for a Major Military victory and they issued a statement so soon after the attack that it was almost certainly written in advance preprepared in to hit the media and score propaganda points just like the attack in september last year so i think what were looking at is the evolution of a symmetric warfare capacity and its understanding about symmetric warfare operations in a way that is intended to maximum Public Impact even if the military value is limited but appreciate your analysis but broad joining is the scott. Conditions have eased in many parts of this trial but of course crews are still battling 5 in New South Wales. And in victoria but they are making the most of these temperatures and live to wind to take control of some of the fires which across the area now yesterday here on saturday and its really a was described as a horrific day the damage is yet to be assessed but its estimated that at least hundreds of homes would have been destroyed this particular region of not just New South Wales which is suffering but victoria there are also fires burning in queensland and tasmania although not as severe as what is happening in the 3 day now we do understand that conditions all favorable in most of the day theres even a bit of rain here in New South Wales and victoria but its along the south coast region that the situation is still incredibly dangerous and this is an issue which will go on. Ahead theres just been a town thats. Along the south coast region in between victoria and New South Wales that whole town has just been evacuated so still an incredibly volatile situation. Its very clear to. At the hospitals the Public Hospitals were the victims were transferred from the military academy that was hit by a drone loyal to the warlord have we just came back from one of the Public Hospitals where the victims are receiving good treatments and medical sources there say that it was so difficult for them to identify bodies of the did victims because most of the dead bodies were either burned or torn apart by the attack now medical sources also say that they have been calling the Health Ministry has been calling on people to go to the hospitals to do need blood most of the victims are aged 18 to 22 and their military students from all the cities and areas in libya do not we spoke to the commander the head of this military academy said that they dont have anything to do with the ongoing fighting for control of tripoli theyre just as students of military academy theyre not fighting against have to his forces thats where there is no reason why his forces are targeting this a military academy and meanwhile have to the fighter jets also targeted the main gate of m 80 gear port and the of yesha and has been halted in the airport and all flights have been diverted again to misrata airport about 2 and a half hours drive to the east from the capital of tripoli. Indonesia are suffering his worst flooding and landslides in decades entire communities have been buried at least 60 people have died all right is on the way towards. A torrent of mont sweeping through homes destroying roads bridges and farmlands cars these are in the majors last floods in more than a decade. Thousands of people are cut off from the outside world some still buried under heaps of mud help is arriving but its too slow and theres not nearly enough for those whove lost everything i dont have to look up our someone i didnt manage to evacuate anything i lost my small stall my house remains but the windows and doors are gone. Torrential rain began on new years eve triggering landslides and causing rivers to break their backs. Slides and bad weather are making it hard for rescue workers to reach those stranded in remote areas thank god we have evacuated people from several places it is impossible for them because particularly led back is badly devastated with no access for vehicles. Nearly 400000 people are crowded into makeshift shelters indeed around the capital jakarta. In some areas water has receded but the threat of diseases like dainty and hepatitis a is rising and there are signs of more rain in. The peak of the rainy season is in february and march so were still facing possible floods were now modifying weathers of the rain wont fall in the cities for the people whose houses are flooded we hope they will stay in refugee compounds so we can monitor their health their reduce possible disease. Person here who do do has blamed delays in Flood Control infrastructure for the devastation and as these floods show the effects are being felt by the citys most vulnerable priyanka aljazeera. So with that report with nature its time now to check out the weather with evidence. Thanks very much stan as were hearing there the floodwaters have receded slightly in one of 2 spots but we are still looking at another good 2 or 3 months of the rainy season continuing in fact fabry into march thats when we will see the heaviest of the rain being to see how the waters have eased back a little bit from these pitches as we go on through the next 24 to 48 hours or so that shows up quite nicely on a rainfall chart actually the heat of the day showers they are still there theyre not as heavy and not as widespread as they were earlier on in the year just turning from new years eve into to new years day as we go on into wednesday as you can see still some rather heavy rain i think over the next 2 or 3 days some of these spots could well see a maybe another 50 to 100 millimeters of rain more than we want but not as much as we have seen recently make up a little further south theres just one to bring your i so this area a cloud that we have just around the northwest of australia this is a developing site this is going to bring some flooding rains into a northern parts of w. A. As we go on through this week pretty becoming a psycho cycle and blake it will be cold as we go on into were monday going on in to choose day status of the southeast where we need that rain those floods up there are not going to help us we have got a chance of one of 2 showers just around the eastern side of New South Wales over the next couple of days down. Youre watching aljazeera his reminder about top stories this hour tens of thousands of people are paying their respects in iran 2000 and solomonic the Top Commander assassinated by a u. S. Airstrike on friday his body has arrived in the holy city of russia where people have gathered to pay their respects to president told trump ascent a series of tweets warning the u. S. Will hit the ron harder than ever before if it takes any retaliatory action solmonese killing trump says his country will be to iranian sites if you run targets similar to. Kenyas government says 4 also bob fighters were killed when the group protect a military base in the countrys east both u. S. And kenyan forces were stationed there of a casualties and not yet no. More now on our top story the aftermath of that u. S. Decision to assess in irans top military commander qassam solomonic the president told trump has issued a warning to iran threatening to hit dozens of targets inside the Islamic Republic if it retaliates btselem on his day if the us president fired off a series of tweets saying iran is talking very boldly about targeting certain usa as its as revenge for our ridding the world of their terrorist leader that this serves as a warning that if iran strikes any americans or American Assets we have targeted 52. 00 iranian sides at those targets and iran itself will be hit very fast and very hard in capitals the usa wants no more threats lets cross to deborah was on in washington d. C. Were seeing those tweets those threats of to iran about what iran will do what is the reaction there in the United States. Well clearly everyones watching the president s tweets very very closely because he is the commander in chief of course and the president here and he has been saying even more things this is a president that very clearly right now has on his mind and has really consumed it all hours about the potential of how iran could respond its now a little after 5 30 in the morning here on sunday morning in washington and trump spent much of saturday evening up until midnight on saturday night here local time tweeting out threats against iran and what a lot of people are basically saying is that for example in 11 of his tweets that he tweeted out he said that. Some of the targets that the u. S. Had to hit iran if iran responded was sites that are culturally significant to iran and targeting culture sites is a is a war crime and so a lot of people are now saying wow this is seriously escalating and it comes at a moment when the state Department Secretary of state mike pompei and other Administration Officials have been trying to do just the opposite deescalate the situation yet trumps tweets are doing just the opposite deborah lets talk a little bit more about this New York Times report very interesting is that its reporting that pentagon officials had indeed placed as one of the options to president q. Some sort of money but i was stunned when he actually did talk about that in the other choices that. Yeah this is really remarkable some anonymous Administration Officials who didnt want their name revealed were speaking to the New York Times and they basically are saying that trump was presented what they call a menu of options by the pentagon to retaliate against iran for attacking the u. S. Embassy in baghdad this is very common for the pentagon to present multiple military options to president s in times of crisis in these options that were presented to trump there were some that were for example strike iran and target id hits in iran targeting maybe a navy ship of the iranian navy or to strike a militant missile installation in iran or to maybe again strike some iran interests within iraq that is what the pentagon thought trump would want and thats what they were expecting he would select but on that they also said listen we could also target soleimani as well the pentagon did not think allegedly that trump was going to select that option but that is exactly what he did it totally surprised military planners and then they scrambled to figure out where soleimani was it was thursday night washington time when trump gave the final orders to to assassinate soleimani according to this article and according to Administration Officials that are talking to New York Times thats when the pentagon found out that solo money was coming from damascus to baghdad and thats when the drone strikes killed him when he got off the plane and was in his convoy leaving its important to point out that the u. S. Has been tracking solo money for many many years and twice with president george w. Bush and also with president barack obama former president s of the u. S. Both of those president s were also presented with the option to assassinate soleimani both the bush. And obama when they were president both said no were not going to do that because the consequences of do taking such an action are too severe clearly donald trump took a much different decision and now we all wait and see to see what the reaction is from iran indeed as you say iran threatening revenge gabriellas on the joining us live this. Is Research Coordinator gulf politics at the Gulf Study Center university he joins us now in the studio its good to have you with us really is a question of what happens now is the iran is threatening revenge and donald trump is threatening retaliation if that is the case with in a period of escalating rhetoric if not is collating conflict how do you see the immediate future playing out well 1st of course i dont think iran will leave this unpunished i think iran will do something because as you can see the money was very popular figure but they are fewer inside iran has to do something because the expectation of its people is that they would retaliate i assume so that but this one from the people and also from the political military establishment moreover having in mind that the leader on everybody inside iran already promised that the his that would be avenged it would be better the 2 things i know but nothing is going to happen now we are in the period of mon morning i think we will we will have to wait the question is what form that revenge sites and there are many different scenarios that are being speculated about. One of the more popular theories if you like is that it would be some form of retaliation carried out by iranian proxy groups throughout the region how do you think how likely is that you think where what potentially could the targets be well iran has been also bragging about their capacity to immobilize other groups outside iran in iraq in syria in lebanon. Yemen so i assume that having in mind that the attack was conducted inside iraq that the main target would be american interests in areas that there are american and iranian troops like syria or iraq when you talk about american interests are you also expanding that to include american civilians in the region will american businesses in the region watch how much concern should they be by americans that they are potentially targets and where would they be most vulnerable im not even though some people even here in not just you know some people that was interviewed mention that every american civilian would be a target i dont think the Iranian Military establishment who would target right now i think that they would try to do something about this more symmetrical since all the money in the hundreds were military they would try to target military targets. Facilities or troops or whatever in iraq or or in syria or iran probably diplomatic but i dont think they will target civilians and if indeed that that carries out what weve seen the threat from donald trump there are more than 50 sites that the u. S. Would be able potentially to target if indeed iran was to carry out that type of a tally what type of response would you expect from the United States. Well i mean the the problem is with time is that he puts what he things and sometimes what he think is a little bit in corner and so i think i wouldnt have expected this kind of threat from from from one where once you are having a military confrontation to threaten drug to thought that could throw the sides or civilian directly so this is what i mean other people could have expected from other the kind of government not from the United States so if this is happening of course iran would do something similar i mean i usually run as a lame we are in a rapidly escalating i think show which leads where. I mean i hope i hope there is no this kind of escalation that the situation is getting reduced right now. First of all. You know will do something because it kind of live this time punished because of the popularity of the work but it will not do it in a way that is going to escalate it will maybe the similar level the bias of the United States is mentioned that if something is happening they will increase the level of course the iranians will we will cope with that level of threat were also potentially looking at a domino effect with this has implications for other countries in the region countries close to the United States saudi arabia for instance it has implications for countries such as bahrain the proxy war being fought out between iran and saudi arabia inside yemen implications in lebanon where his bowler of course is very closely linked to iraq what are the domino effects and what are the implications for these countries who is most vulnerable. I mean i assume all the countries are in the contacts are not oval to large scale war between iran and the United States so it would be very difficult not to be affected by a military confrontation since the waters are shared by all the little states. I mean my guess is that iran is not interested in extend in the confrontation to states so iran will try to keep the confrontation within. The confrontation with the United States i dont think they will use this to extend their work for instance through to saudi arabia or to emirates if its finally retaliate in iran had. Their ups and downs since june and in september with all the the things that they were going on in. Terms of the gulf so i dont think they are interested in increasing more the vision but to produce a picture im sure there are a lot of efforts from both sides of the of the of the gulf trying to reduce the pension between the on iran and we are not in that base. I mean on the one on the base of increasing that they should but reducing the china has been good to have you on the program thank you again for joining us thank you very much as a car there from the university. Of a flight of at least 700000 undocumented immigrants who were brought to the u. S. As children to become one of the defining issues of the 2020 president ial election President Trump is trying to end a program to temporarily protected them from deportation the Supreme Court is set to make a decision on their future just months before election day and the delicate reports Norma Ramirez was 5 years old when her parents brought her to the u. S. Illegally she says that she didnt feel different growing up but like hundreds of thousands of others shes on documented skid and uncertain about the future and have a Social Security number. Really devastating because i had done everything right i was you know model student in 2012 president barack obama introduced the deferred action for childhood arrivals all back a policy which provided protections for the undocumented immigrants he gave people like norma the right to work and apply for Student Loans it also gave her a 2 year a preview from possible deportation that ended when President Trump cancelled the doctor policy in september of 2017 falsely claiming many recipients also known as dreamers are hardened criminals now the question of whether the president acted lawfully is before the conservative leaning Supreme Court with a decision expected by june essentially what the administration did in what were trying to argue to the court is that they didnt take into account the impact that rescinded in dhaka would have on hundreds of thousands of people in their communities for activist in dhaka recipient maria pearlers sanchez a recent princeton graduate the stakes in the future couldnt be higher for someone to have that kind of power to affect 1300 thousands of lives that saw. As the president ial election looms its voters who may ultimately decide the fate of dreamers if the democrats win back the white house the president could reinstate the program even if a court rules the decision was illegal but unable to vote almost undocumented immigrants can do is watch wait and hope for the best and to gallacher aljazeera. At least 14 people that they killed a nigerian others injured after a roadside bomb attack on a bus ignore them but you know it had the do the border with bali recent groups with links to al qaida.
