On the u. K. Parliament has voted overwhelmingly in favor of Boris Johnsons breaks it deal so there is a way for the u. K. To leave the European Union by the end of january a section on protecting workers rights has been removed from the bill studio b. Unscripted is next with a discussion on how to have more empathetic conversations something we need more of. One of the things that i think is hard about social media considering its called social media its like one of the media when you think of the word. Do you think that there is such a thing that is of use for work i dont think even is a useful was i think weve seized aljazeera now you and i just saw the cult of love you know that all the sure meaning charities awards what is broken and. Im allowed to vote on a philosopher and. Im way sure it can be a stylist and we do a lot with philosophy here i founded the school of life to fill a void in our current Education Systems the teaching of emotional intelligence. I explore ideas we often call problematic to me theyre the most revealing the most interesting. I want people to look up the way i dont want people to have to rely on names to say anything. Im curious about questions like should art have a part of our expectations of happiness making us unhappy do we need more compassion how can we be more forceful after all we all should be imperfect and maybe also a little bit weird. Half. Thank you. Its great to be here and id rather we can just chat about anything and so this is the chance to start the revolution that i think you and i start i think i think we believe in what we believe in love love goodness and compassion and empathy and thats actually where i wanted to start because ive always been drawn to your work because i find it quite refreshing i find most things can be quite divisive and ive always liked your take it seems like youre more willing to understand than you are to judge and condemn but recently ive seen a lot more study about how anybody is actually tearing us apart having too much empathy can create more aggression towards outgroups so i just wondered what you thought about that do you think anybody can be quite dangerous look i think ultimately behind your question its like how can we create a kind of more compassionate world and we get inside the minds of other people and respond optimally and i think the root of kindness is knowing that you are sinful if you can accept that you are not a totally good person then you can start to accept that others are not going to be totally good i that you can learn to forgive them to expect forgiveness of the things youve done wrong and to forgive in turn so its a a Virtuous Cycle of charity we get so much stuff wrong with steering blind. I think its amazing how we build a world where nowadays we really kind to children but were still not very good at being kind to the childlike parts of one another and we all have a 3 year old inside us a little really go is that though it doesnt really go i mean think of the way right if you got a kid and. Lets imagine you come home from work youre tired youre hungry you prepare the kids some dinner and its 2 years old and you say look darling have cookies and dinner and they can throw the whole thing on the floor what are you going to do expect it hit it condemn it judge it you know youre going to try and think of reasons why that kid has not behaved optimally and you think maybe the kids tired maybe the kids feeling jealousy is confuse you can try to find an explanation which takes the edge off the dark interpretation then your partner comes home and theyre a little bit short with you and you go what why is that person short with me and you think because theyre out to get me because they no longer love me because this is their arrogance why actually they sure because theyre tired and we should extend some of the similar kind of charity i mean dont you agree that in some ways. We condemn too much and we understand so little i think we find it hard to believe that other people are go in through what we are i think we think that we live in our own unique suffering and the nature of our suffering and hardships may be in a slightly more nuanced and different but for the most part people are all going through their own personal hell thats a beautiful sentence that everybodys going through their own personal hell i really want to psychoanalyst saying to me i said to him what was one thing that most people miss about other people he said how anxious. And you know part of the problem is that we know ourselves from the inside but we only know other people from what they choose to tell us and they tell us such an edited range of things so all of us end up thinking that were very weird and i think like a good society is one in which more and more of the reality of what it is to be human which is its kind of chaotic and no one knows what going on can bubble up to the surface and you can be more honest about what its like if you lose to what the imposter syndrome and like we all think that. You know we are imposters and everybody else is going on everybody feels like an impostor i dont think anyone knows what im doing right now i think were all sort of winging it and i think if we were a lot more honest about it we would. Take a lot more comfort and not judge people or sort of feel a bitterness towards other people for what we perceived to be and then having all of this privilege where they dont feel anything negative you know so i think if we all realize that were going through this imposter syndrome in this situations that make us all anxious and fearful and a lot of the things there we condemn and the things that people do that we perceive to be horrible and maybe are horrible are really didnt hear or to me i think a lot of things are more rooted in fear than hatred i think its so true isnt it that basically most of bad behavior here is coming out of fear and anxiety. Because the behavior may be bad right now were not saying like dont condemn the behavior here you can look at the origins of it and think ok fact if i came from fear and anxiety then it is you are dealing with Something Different i mean what do you think of the word evil do you think that there is such a thing is a useful word i dont think evil is a useful word and recently actually i was reading a book by. A psychologist called talk to juliet schor and she made this book or the Science Behind evil and one of the great things that she said is that we need to do away with the word evil because it stops conversation where it should begin and thats what happens we Say Something is evil and then we no longer think about it anymore thats just what it is that the diagnosis is theyre evil therefore we dont have to think about what theyre doing but i think things take a very different picture when we start thinking about for actually you know what led to this kind of behavior i know ive gone through a lot of things in my own personal life you know try. Where things happened you know like someone in my in my family was killed and of course you know you feel high and you feel a lot of anger and you feel aggression but one of the main things that i thought about was well how does this young person get to a place in their life where they can take someones life and for stuff because you know that is what it was about it was for material things that will lose their value in a year or maybe less and and so i think when we start to lost ourselves that question may be uncomfortable thing for people is that we might see the minutes of ourselves in the you mentioned tragedy i mean if you think of the media the media every day is dealing with stories and its its putting an interpretation on those stories basically whos a goody and whos a bad its very good kind of culture but in our culture we also have this example of tragic art like you know the ancient greeks invented this really weird thing called tragedy and you know the great tragedies of the great tradition but also then of literature more broadly what they often do is they take somebody who the media might say thats just a loser or thats a badly and they show us how that person got there so you think of dostoyevsky and you take a murderer and like you basically make us feel something really unusual which is ending up murdering somebody doesnt just make you a weirdo or a mad person you can be human thats a terrifying youre also fascinating there as it makes i want to see if hes such a lesson for our times because what hes saying is you could be a murderer and still human i think were afraid of the gray sometimes because were a bit too. Eager to label things good or bad whenever im thinking about things i think about helpful and helpful. In a way in a less judge mental way to think about peoples behavior so even if i dont like something i wont allow myself to not. Like something because i think its bad and so like i said this story that happened in my family you know someone passing away soon and it was very close to me that really that really taught me something because you know i i sort of choice in that situation i could. You know respond. To coldness and maybe developing developing prejudices against the type of person who fits the description of the of the culprit in this situation. But here with that serve right it wouldnt. Make me quite a fearful person and so it was from there where i was just kind of like there has to be another way youre somebody who greets the world with love and i think love is such a misunderstood word we associate it so narrowly with romantic love with finding somebody beautiful and impressive and being amazed by them thats not really love i mean theres another version of love which is really showing charity and imagination towards another person so when you see bad behavior your 1st thought is how did that person get there whats the child inside that person right that person who is now not all theyre angry and whatever was once a vulnerable infant what happened to that person here and we were given much encouragement love here we are in london and lots of big buildings i mean one someone was saying if you want to know what a society values look at the tallest buildings in that society what are they devoted to well most of our big towers are devoted to banking yes. Thats interesting but its far from love you know we used to have some skylights where the largest most impressive building was devoted to love we need a bit of glamour yeah around the act of loving so i think weve seized aljazeera now unite to solve a culture of love you know the love and the sheer meaning charity what is broken in us i think and imagination yeah and i think we can look everybody up over the way and go for it start the religion of love the end of the religion really is a no no so were going to let you know what i mean by cool is completely its not a very glamorous as you say and its not a very sexy idea to think of love beyond the remit of romance you know we often think there is we are. Understand them were condoning it you know so and i think thats quite dangerous or maybe unhelpful should i say we do with all that love is an emotion only feel in the presence of someone wonderful rather than a skill that you have to practice seen in order to get better at it. In order to make the world a more livable place that love actually needs to be exercised not in front of Something Wonderful but in some front of something difficult thats when you need the love resists the love muscle exactly i mean any way anyone can love something thats terrific but can you love something thats not to riff exactly i think these are the reasons why i think things like kindness and compassion empathy i think theyre fairly radical acts and i think theyre radical acts because theyre quite hard to do is yell at least things were easy then they wouldnt be you know they just be things that would be a given everybodys got strengths tied to those strengths and weaknesses so lets imagine somebody whos very punctual thats a really good strength and thats fantastic it will have some weaknesses associated with it someone is very punctual might also be sometimes quite rigid sometimes quite overanxious or Something Like that but if you only ever see the rigidity and overanxiety youll think why why did this person even come into my life but if you pause and say it was over. How what is the crude quality or of which this bad piece of behavior is connected so i always think ill take the bad behavior and try and build a bridge in the nearest possible good quality maybe we should use this moment to check what the audience thinks that the great about love and all these ideas that were talking about i guess. My question is finally. Youve been quite critical about romantic comedies and the disproportionate focus on falling in love and finding the one if you had the chance to produce a film about love what you focus on in who it. Anymore. I think the real challenge of love is not how to get together with somebody thats the most exciting thing we do as well and how people get together thats the fun thing but the thing we really struggle with is how do you keep love going over the long term i think you know hollywood film of the last 30 years has anyone ever done the laundry people dont do laundry in movies but i think we need to show that a lot of life is bound up in issues of domesticity and i think people become very ill tempered with one another very often when they live together because they keep thinking something very dangerous they keep thinking this is true trivial to have an argument about to discuss i dont want to talk about the socks because like ive never seen anybody else discussing socks but actually these things should be made glamorous and interesting and legitimate subjects for conversation so that we will be patient when we go climbing a mountain we practice for ages we get the gear we know its not going to be easy to climb Mount Everest when we start living together we think that certain things are going to be really easy so for example people are reluctant to talk about money their breakfast habits how to arrange a cutlery draw how to feel about the inlaws cetera and then these things become enormous flash points because they arent given the dignity of the seriousness which does actually underlie these topics so i think that we need works of art that will prepare us for what life is actually like and i think the most works of art do something completely different i think most of us in this audience probably feel that the way that our love lives unfold seems so strange compared to what we know that they should unfold if were listening to the movies and that suggest were making the wrong movies not that were weird but the movie industry is very weird as a teacher im quite interested in thinking about how we could bring about a sea change in education about love about these deeper and more complicated in organic versions of love but i think at the root of that and the needs to be a deeper discussion about how to encourage vulnerability in the classroom and i wondered what both of you had to say about that i think we often think that roman. And its he is a witness but again vulnerability is hard you know which would actually suggest its quite a strength you know if you can be vulnerable in public and to say what you want because a lot of what we want weve been taught somewhere maybe by caregivers by parents by the media that we take in. What we warn is shame for and what we want should in juice kill and maybe what we want may not be the best thing for us but to be able to voice whatever those things are i think are really important i think its important for creativity i think its important in terms of knowing yourself and i think the more that we get to know ourselves and the more we allow ourselves to be vulnerable and so i think if we want to build a culture that has a lot less shamed and a lot less skill and those things can lead to some really awful things i think maybe we should start thinking about what the alternative is if were not vulnerable which may encourage us to be more vulnerable its so ironic that we think that whats going to witness friends makers impressive is invulnerability but actually invulnerability maybe give soon grudging admiration but it never really wins you what i think we all want which is connection honest connection with other people you cannot connect with some if you just want to be strong good luck to you but you will be very very lonely you know friendship begins when you can depart from the script of what it means to be normal and you say actually im scared im weak i havent or desire ive thought things that youre not supposed to think thats the beginning of of connection and building a more humane world surely thats why we read it in reading when people in other peoples own ability that we find parts of ourselves you know i think we i the whole appeal of reading is that people are being vulnerable on a pay terms the devils advocate maybe room. You know the ideal world that one would build would be one in which art was less necessary all the stories of like the teenager who is in a prejudice narrow my society picks up a book and in the book finds things that are being said about life that no one saying in the area would be great if we could just throw that book away because everyone had realized you know the lessons in the books were going to be not just in the books but in the Wider Society who were going to take those lessons out of works of art and and make them live and breathe that spirit of acceptance of complexity of compassion shouldnt just exist in libraries they should exist in the kitchen when it comes to looking at a case like ted bundy you was a serial killer who had killed quite a few women and they encountered. Psychologist said that he was somebody who lacked empathy is empathy something that can be taught when somebody is classed as somebody whos bad to the bone and just generally evil but i would say that there is such a thing as somebody who undergoes such trauma that their mind shuts down and they are then beyond the reach of some of the ordinary lessons that you might want to teach them and i think if we if we look at the many socalled pathologically. Aggressive dangerous types you often find in their past experiences which have shut their mind down so they are not amenable to the standard lessons of even giving a sermon about brotherly love but they couldnt listen because their mind has been essentially broken and i and i dont know enough about this murder in particular but i think that if you look at the the childhoods of many and possibly all cruel dictator people who have lacked. The capacity to understand the suffering of others almost always its because theyve been. Victim of unbelievable cruelty themselves which they then play out and repeat an exercise on the world in various ways i dont im not an expert in mass murder but i i dont believe that this kind of behavior comes from nothing and i really appreciate what you guys are saying in terms of bridge in the divide between someones negative and going to step positive but for me personally when it comes to say someone whos very cis he refuses to see my humanity i do not want to spend the time to think about ok how can i see the positive in them well i think i know what obviously i definitely experience racism and i think that anybody who is a minority within a majority will our own however that side works. For me im really interested in removing some of racisms powell list and my own life and what i mean by that is. Ive tried to understand what is racism is it or is it this hatred is. All of these things is it someone who is just completely without any morality and im not sure that it is and what i think it might be and what so many negative things might be and was touched on it is fear i think what a lot of us call White Supremacy is why insecurity and i think it is white for me i like to call. Supremacist attitudes by their name which i think is inferiority complexes i dont think you can be a supremacist and still fear people taking you over one of the striking ideas for a child for example who goes to school and encounters a bully and you know the parent will say the bully is actually afraid such a weird idea how can the briley be afraid the bully seems now. And strong and powerful but actually genuinely not just making it up as a convenient story by some kind of cosmic justice actually youre not a bully unless youre very very small and weak inside. And you just have to hold on to that is actually the truth its not just a convenient myth you know how inadequate must you be to try and project your imagine corsi to make other groups feel inadequate i think thats what it is a lot of people always want someone to blame something and they cant take responsibility for their lives so it has to be socalled immigrants or it has to be the black people or has to be the gays its not in so much is like im saying that you know i want to sit down with k. K. K. Members but what i am saying is that. I wont allow them the privilege of making me think that theyre evil because thats something. Thats thats not just a believe that to be true i think its. I think its their own sadness within them thank you. When we 1st met him through and most of all i was aware of a researcher and you and you didnt do any small talk you were like lets go to the tragedy of existing everything because we both know what the 10 big is if you know we dont care its always called a name like you think the internet has exacerbated on happiness or has it mainly revealed something that may have always been the United States sincerely believes in the right of everybodys happiness and this is a punishing idea and. M. T. In about half an hours time to join me then. If you want to know what a society values look at the tallest buildings in that society one of a devoted to well most of towers are devoted to banking things like kindness compassion empathy i think radical acts and i think never radical acts because theyre quite hard to do you know if you just want to be strong. Good luck to you but you will be very very lonely. Thank you thank you. Happy then say before the internet you think. Has exacerbated on happiness all as it may be revealed something that may have always been lurking in this room is anybody expecting to get married and actually be happy with their spouse to be like yeah for most of the history of humanity the idea that you would not just tolerate your partner but actually love them and not just one year but through your whole life would be thought insane because you didnt love your partner they were just like a business associate you tried raising children and you know lost the brief interval of time before you know color or some horrible thing got you think about work for most of the history of humanity the thought that you would try and enjoy your job was crazy you did your job just to survive you didnt want to love it you dont want to enjoy it so both in the remand and in the professional sphere we have set ourselves a daunting challenge were supposed to get together with someone that we actually love and have a fulfilled life with them and were supposed to be doing a job that doesnt just money but also gives us deeper fulfillment oh my goodness these are beautiful ideas but no wonder we sometimes confuse the everyday confuse you no wonder theres a lot of anger in society because at the root of anger is optimism thats been frustrated so it can be one of the most generous things you can do to another person to say. Your lifes going to be fundamentally miserable and not just you but all of us that all of us are in a really difficult struggles because were human beings the buddhists have it right right whats the 1st truth of the buddha life is suffering thats a really good starting point it doesnt mean that every day is going to be awful but its a good starting point yes or no i do agree and interestingly like. A lot of instance things resonates with me because i do think it has this. Sort of law truths to tell truth. Ourselves from im thinking that the reason why we dont acknowledge these things in western society is because its beneficial to to work if we think that. I mean were going to be failed and we are going to have children and this is going to fill a void you know we all. The natural order of things will keep doing things in the complaint. But i think if we. Keep in mind that life is a lot of suffering. I think that we wont have such High Expectations of ourselves and of other people is a question but you somebody who is able to take joy in small things like all simple the moments of simple beauty are you able to do gratitude yes i think so yeah more so than i can do the big things but Exchange Just give me anxiety yeah yeah. Things i said to be grey and when good things happen in my career i have knowledge and they are grateful for them but i also acknowledge that this is a lot i mark and youve been through a really difficult period of life do you think back capacity to be great for has increased or decreased as youve journeyed through these quite difficult experiences i think its increased but i think the things that im grateful for now the same as before i had experiences in my life so they are now more the simple things im im grateful for a day where nothing pressing is on my mind im not having terrible however let me go to whats happened this time and i think to exactly right the really most depressing thing is denial the most depressing person is someone who is always cheerful today. I mean thats a terrible you know you have a nice day i mean you know bless the United States and its produced some wonderful things but the United States sincerely believes in the right of everybodys happiness and this is a punishing ideal its you know are you having a nice day you know if you said no you know you would be admitting a terrible truth by doing to people what to do it is like. And youre in you know youre in palo alto when youre you know when youre doing well in the internet is like yeah well how are you im great and hows your c. V. Sometimes to come hows your health great you know this person is insufferable to insufferable but if you were able to go like im broken how you broken im not sorry you know we need to invent a new dating ritual where we can get somebody to him and tell you the reason these are the things that we should establish 1st like how in which ways in particular crazy these are the things i mean it cost how you crazy people sitting at home and i think like who is this really destroying with storage of poise and calm person like she can have any of my problems she can. Humanize. You know lies yourself so that the audience is going to feel better how are you angry how your little crazy you know what its so funny because every time you know its im one of these people whos a bit weird and im always looking at like a slightly problem with myself and ill research on the internet like oh i have that but i have that and im going to many but you know ive seen only in bright stars stuff right now so im like oh i can kind of identify with all of these things. But maybe a particular ways im crazy is that im im really quite intense im not very good at like conversation i like to know the worst things about everything so id like to know the was thing that youve ever done or i realize when we 1st met you were like most people like was the weather etc you didnt do any small talk you were like lets go to the tragedy of existing. With you im going to like you want to do that i understand because we post you know were pretending there is life you know we dont care its always cordoning like. Something. Here i want to i want to talk about is a word that i think we really all of us long for but its a word we dont know what to do with which is the Word Community you do feel like i want more of a community feelings or something you know i mean i think its probably one of the fundamental things i feel i think when i think about things that can make me sad it is the fact. I dont often believe i have a community is something for and i think it is why ive taken to reading so much sometimes because its in reading and this is why i agree with you when you say in an ideal society we wouldnt need to read so much because we would have these things available to us we wouldnt need to rely on the dead to give us you know what we should be able to get from the living i dont know ok question. Yes in many ways yeah i would say that you are you know. I think interesting because like im not married and i dont have children but i would imagine you know and im sure many people do which is the misconception is that we really need. To get rid of is that you know youre married you have children and you have social group and i imagine you have friends that you know youre not going to be alone its very sentence i would have imagined that dot dot dot here all carry with us that thing i would have imagined that and its never the case for you i mean lets just take it as read right you know when i mean you work a lot with celebrities or in famous people etc and when you get to know these people its always the same story you know its like this wonderful facade its like reveals a human being who suffers who stupid who walks into dogs have doubts themselves and just like an idiot like everybody at the school of life and doing you know we often get people who come to us with confidence now the standard kind of bless the United States california answer to lack of confidence is to say to people youre beautiful youre strong believe in yourself like you know everything we have to give people counter intuitive advice we say to them look you know how you suspect youre a bit of an idiot you know you suspect one of the corner of your eyes that maybe like you know stuff is good news and bad news you know the bad news is yes youre an idiot you are actually you know you thought you were an idiot and you are the good news is that there is 7000000000 idiots with you theres no other option for really being thats what it means to be human and whether youre famous or not famous etc youre going to be stupid youre going to be lonely youre going to be lost are going to make terrible errors thats the human condition writing and its funny that you say that because i always find the people i resonate with the most you know if i or someone how they are and they really tell me how they are they dont just say fine because you know thats sort of like our automatic response but if they Say Something like you know im a life you know and i know i dont. Yes again and im alive because theyre not there and you know its not they dont want to know me or drama yeah. Theyre hinting delicately beautifully at greater complexity exactly and i appreciate that because immediately let me know that this is someone i dont have to pretend with but where would you find a community where i mean i know that you have you know the school of life and thats cultivating something i find very interesting. Your teen bor our social media type of social media out it was you know you and i thought that was really cool because one of the things that i think is hard about social media considering its called social media its more like monologue media you know you kind of just kind of just pour you know you like from your stream of consciousness but youre not really allowed to be that social with people you know i might be as open because i think its probably a lot better to have conversations in cry of the than in front of an audience because when youre doing in front of an already and you dont want to be seen to be silly and i want to get things wrong it can make people more defensive so i think if we talk in our in boxes we can just forget about all of that but i often get people saying i know its probably weird that i messaging you but you know i think youre a nice person or i think you call and i get people saying complimentary things and saying i hope you dont find this weird and you would think in the one place which is a social media. It would be quite ok to be social with other people but its not so easy for optimistic about social media you know we often hear the terrible stories of or could encounter the central but the there must be so many friendships that have been moved out of unlikely friendship people would never of recognized and on of each others humanity over divisions of politics over divisions of of you know nationalities and conflicts around the world people have reached out and discovered the humanity their common humanity live in these giant cities you know behind us is. This giant city is a lonely city out there yes there are bars and clubs and cinemas but how often do you show up in a bar and reveal your humanity to straight you dont know its all like its all posture its all you know its pretending that youre someone that youre not so weve lost the art i mean we never really had it but we used to be more we grew up in very little groups we grew up in groups of 20 or 30 or 40 and we now subsist in in groupings of 8102030 1000000 and we simply know each other through the media and the media reflect back to us an image of. People in the worst sense aggression etc youre used to thinking the stranger is a mad person a paedophile a murderer and acts thing you know like you cant imagine that 99. 9999 percent of human beings are really quite nice and i just forget that dont have any experience of that and we think that everybodys you know out to get us and it leads us to be so timid with our humanity as we as we navigate the big cities right you know i agree ive often found that some of my best conversations of calm in the back of a neighbor are there anybody over there i have no idea about we dont know each other but theres something quite freeing in being able to speak to someone who doesnt know you just find its much easier to be open but strangers sometimes and i think we should change that i think we should be able. To be more open with our friends about who we are a number of parts of ourselves and things like that because as you said it is a lonely place and even working as someone with celebrities i know im a fashion stylist and i tend to work with people in music and ive had people ive worked with you have 5000000 followers who are upset because someone else has 7 and a half you know they feel it somewhere hard done by we do so much of our compassion and celebrity i mean the fascinating course is that you know no one no one starts out wanting to be very famous without you know its almost like in order to want to be so visible youve got to feel somehow so invisible and thats people never get that about celebrities i mean someone said. That acting was not a profession its a diagnosis but you know maybe celebrity is not it is not a profession its a diagnosis and you know thats how we should look at it now i think theres something in id be interested to know what the audience thinks about that and they may have a question for you so you ask. How is she crazy i want to know how you. Well im very anxious. Im very im very insecure on all fronts im just like im ready to sort of despair of myself very quickly i i dont have great self belief that im quite confident because i might come across as like quite confident but really most of time i mean i want to start crying and curl up in a ball and pull a blanket over me its just amazing i get through the day so. Much more centrist im just very ridiculous of ways i would ask actually you know how do we get how do you push through that because i would say im secure and many friends who like me said notion of things are meant to be good theyre happening to me im like this is terrifying. What makes you push through how do you get all of the insecurities and i think you have to believe what youre experiencing has got an echo in other people even if you cant see it even even if i can leap of faith so i think about shyness right the shy person takes other people at face value and things how can i possibly get through to them because they look like they know everything but if you take a leap of faith like you know this person is presenting as a bit of a no warren is a bit of a you know authority on things like i know theres like a last frightened child in them so you know theyre not giving me any hint im just going to leap over the barrier and im just going to say im kidding you and were going to go and have a party in my last kid and your last day were going to get together and like have some fun to go so often we need a bit of confidence to break through that barrier not believe in the barrier so i recently came across a new term to me at least called antenatal this idea of being opposed to being born in the 1st place because life is suffering so im very curious to hear how you would have a conversation which in a person is not unique to us and yourselves. You know funnily enough i know antenatal is and i dont know if. Its my job to convince them that having children is. A worthwhile endeavor for then. You know they sort of believe that having children is immoral and now we dont deserve to have children and i would say well just because life is suffering doesnt mean there d isnt something to gain from it just because things are difficult doesnt mean we dont have enormous amounts of beauty. In between those hardships and so i think the idea that we shouldnt have children because were all going to die and because theyll be suffering. There is no value in some suffering which isnt over glorifying. I suffer it but these things make us so thats what i would say i think antenatal ism is a typically exaggerated position of a very important truth which is that its completely possible to a very good life and never have children and i think that antenatal is and gets a lot of its energy from the humiliation of the people who decide who can have children often feel at the hands of a world which is still very focused on raising families and that shame and humiliation is not deserved but i dont think you need to then go and shame and humiliate people who are having children its you know it should be totally allowed. To lead a very respectable life with children or without children and i think my hope is that slowly will be waking up to seeing the childless state as a equally legitimate state reflecting back on community and the importance of community when i think of community i think of collaboration and the importance of collaboration for those of us that forge face seen platforms how we maintain transparent conversations with collaborators are sensitive issues im thinking it goes back to the idea of being vulnerable and not shame people i think. Right now there is a particular energy. Around this idea that if someone says something wrong or if someone may have the wrong opinion then theyre quickly jumped on and that doesnt make anyone want to be vulnerable and this is my biggest worry about conversation taking place in this way is whats meant to give a voice to maybe the most Vulnerable People in society i think can actually take away their voice some ways because theyre scared to say things that dont correspond maybe to a narrative and so if we want to have transparent conversations i think we need to be able to welcome a diversity. Thought even if that thought makes us uncomfortable so. Its compassion and in one case literally a compassion educator do you avoid simply creating another cultural expectation that we can then fail to live up to. That good question look i think by precisely admitting that compassion like any other virtue is going to be something that we will find very hard. To practice every day and i think you can count as the lover of something without practicing it every day and without necessarily finding it easy so the typical thing is calm so i really believe in being calm but you might spot me youre at the airport fighting with a suitcase like why doesnt you know and you might go charlatan here he spoke about karma i just thought it was ridiculous i kicked his own suitcase what i really are but you go look i still really believe in the job of being calm its like i had a bad day and i think that we should all cut ourselves some slack what identifies us as people on the right path is that we love in a committed to the right things we might lapse we know we compassion every day but if we if we believe in compassion thats already a huge star so we should feel compassionate towards ourselves for our moments when compassion is beyond us because we are simply under too much pressure sciri you both point into Unrealistic Expectations being at the root of disappointment in other and in yourself so it seems like a solution to be to lower your expectations but that seems like it could quickly turn into cynicism so im wondering how you are see the difference between cynicism and having realistic expectations around the world and what role hope could play in creating that balance i think cynicism it often has a kind of congealed anger within it that the cynic is. Is actually angry at the state of the world and isnt properly accepting the world i think theres a theres a kind of joyful version of despair you know maybe youve suffered a great loss and you feel very sad and things you know been very wrong but then sometimes theres a kind of simple joy that comes about when youve been through hell and back and then you know you look at whats remains and you find that good with an energy that maybe the sort of embittered person cant find yet so i think theres a way of. Being in a way quite despairing but at the same time still capable of joy people of compassion capable of love all those things capable of being silly in light hearted sometimes but still really in touch with the darkness i think we can do that yeah i think i think you can as well i dont think you can be someone whos quite an advocate for compassion and love and kindness. If you are too cynical about the world i think in wanting to speak on those things is the hope and the understanding that i think we have this within our capacity but we can be so overwhelmed by things are happening in the world in our own minds and everything that we take in that we forget died i do think we have the capability and and thinking that we have the capability is what makes me helpful i wanted to hear your thoughts on duty whether its something you would encourage or discourage and what would you consider or some of its advantages or disadvantages i think judy can be a good thing i dont know something i. Recommend that everybody should have to see the value or importance in i think for me duty is very bound up with meaning but i think if we feel some form of judy thats beyond ourselves and some juicy to see. This. I think we override some of. Insecurities theres often assumption that people are not due to full enough nowadays and that in the olden days we were better a judy and that now maybe were all a bit selfish im not quite sure thats true i think theres a lot of evidence that actually theres maybe a bit too much compliance there are many good boys and girls whove been good boys and girls from a young age and still ticking the boxes and still doing what society expects of them and that actually what these people need is an ability to discover their own capacities for selfishness and i know that everybody thinks everybody so selfish but many people are a little bit too due to fall and get ill from an excess of selflessness and i think that its a good question to ask yourself if i dared to be a little bit more selfish what would i actually do and i think there are a lot of people out there who have not been given enough love to start to lead the authentic life that they know in their heart of hearts that they desire but the feel theyre not allowed it. Its been a pleasure. Thank you so much. I am. Hello another temperature record was broken on friday in New South Wales a new state highest recorded temperature and temperatures are dropping in there not necessarily the real story at the moment the fires still are but the process of dropping the temp is not the focus for saturday a 20 degree drop typically adelaide and melbourne purses a doing that on a frontal system is with thunderstorms and gusty winds so ahead of the drop you get some really nasty conditions which drive fires further west in person temperatures about 34 dropping to about 30 by sunday as the wind change comes in maybe a few showers here too and by which time sydneys tempura drop sydneys wind direction will have dropped so possibly the city will not be quite as orange or afraid it wont last. Now across in new zealand a typical wet summer the rain is rotting away or cloud is rowing away taking the ready with it leaving a few showers behind but you should have a couple of good days of almost warm summer sunshine 20 knowlton and back 18 is the eventual temperature in wellington was running close to going to the end to end the weekend.
