Protesters as theyre deployed to stop progress to pass a state over a controversial citizenship bill. It was being called the most important election in a generation and the u. K. Vote appears to have produced one of the largest conservative party wins in a generation voting has ended and the exit poll predictions put Boris Johnsons conservative party on track for its biggest win since Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister the conservatives are on course to secure a clear majority with as many as 368. 00 seats thats 50 seats more than they won the last election in 2017 labor is projected to get 191. 00 significantly less than the 262. 00 seats they won last time around the Scottish National party looks likely to win 55. 00 seats in scotland while the liberal democrats are projected to win just 13 lets just show you some live pictures coming into us from one of the constituencies sunderland in the north east of england sunderland is significant because every election is a race between sunderland and newcastle up there on north sea to produce the 1st results of the night diplomats as well gathered at the European Union summit in brussels well theyre welcoming the clarity that service seeing it now officially apparently a decisive victory for the conservatives and the clarity provided by the size of that victory lets bring in Chris Hopkins whos the head of politics of the Polling Company savant commerce chris youve had an hour to digest what we think the figures mean how does it unpack i mean its still you know look the same as it is an hour ago still looks like Boris Johnson is going to get his his his huge majority that he was looking for when when he said how would this election you know about that with the idea it was supposed to be the bracks election all he said throughout the campaign is get breaks it done looks like hes finally going to have the parliamentary arithmetic to do that particularly a clickable usually when we have a 1st past the post system is as we do here in the u. K. People talk about the swing traditionally the swing is all. Always been well if but that constituency goes red that constituency someplace else has probably gone blue but you cant apply tribal lines here because people were voting in completely unpredictable ways you can and i think that is really what the exit poll has tried to do you know the exit poll is rarely wrong so im not trying to say that its likely to be wrong with time but there were different challenges this time one with the party theres no historic data on how people might vote based on the backs of party and secondly theres been a huge increase in the mouth postal votes in of the theyre not recorded in the in the exit polls so yeah there is scope for change but i think generally speaking you know what we seem to be hearing the exit poll has given us some consistency but is it the numbers and it seems like the swing across broadly across the whole country is very good for the conservative maybe even historic in some places but we are seeing that labor vote might be holding up in london which indicates to me at least that the electoral politics in the u. K. Is changing like apartment or a party that used to have near northern strongholds they seem to be disappearing and intent and instead theyre taking vast swathes of the vote in metropolitan liberal states and it looks like they might even be taking some of the more affluent areas that may be the conservative possibly by voting by being slow progress might leave behind but thats really interesting isnt it because if the labor vote in london is holding up that means that what critics have been saying of labor during the campaign is therefore demonstrably true and the critics of labor have been saying the same thing for day after day its labor have moved away from the traditional heartlands white male working class men who voted for it so the conservative party have taken those people that traditionally would have supported labor absolutely i think you know what the crumb of comfort i think for the labor party throughout this campaign or at least what they were telling themselves and saying publicly was that. Really a lot of those White Working Class men working to man which is what we would hold at the start of the election and they still might find it so unpalatable to vote conservative that they wont end up doing it and theyll come home come back home to labor and if in fact theyre both correct that clearly hasnt happened chris well talk again im sure in the meantime many thanks. Well we have correspondents outside the parliament in london and in uxbridge in the far west of london area that is the seat the Boris Johnson the british Prime Minister is defending lets start with Andrew Simmons in westminster so andrew were digesting how we think the numbers are stacking up its pretty pretty significant. Yes if this exit poll proves reichs then its historic its even a landslide 86. 00 seat majority in the Parliament Standing behind me that is colossal and it will also show that simple messaging works get bricks it done my mantra how many times have we heard it internationally and all the criticism that Boris Johnson has received in his campaign some of his gaffes some of his actions and his accusers saying that he lies that hes not to be trusted yet we have this massive push towards him and if it works out to be true let me bring you up to date with developments away from the polling right now but this an email that Boris Johnson has put to his supporters and his workers i hope you enjoy a celebration tonight he said in the mail you powered this campaign we couldnt have done it without you there has been a remark from a John John Mcdonnell the labors shadow chancellor number 2 to 2 Jeremy Corbyn he was challenged on a t. V. Results program and asked if these results are true then where does Jeremy Corbyn stand he said well see the results in the morning and then decisions will be made the appropriate decisions will be made so what were seeing now. Is out and he went on to say that the reason is for this situation is that bricks it distorted everything and that there was a situation whereby it wasnt necessarily the radical policy is that the Neighbor Party is proposed even targeting the National Health service saying its going to be an issue thats at the core of the debate and seeming to get some positive responses from electors in the sense that they wanted to see more done more funding put into the National Health service it seemed the conservatives were having difficulty in this area but it kept coming round every time the Prime Minister got into trouble he would repeat this mantra get bricks it done and its resonating down doubtfully with not just the middle classes in the u. K. But also the traditional labor voters it would seem according to opinion polls that have come through so far there has been a larger number of traditional as its described as in the in these polls traditional labor voters moving over to the conservatives and weve seen this in interviews all around the country particularly in labor heartlands where people have made that switch peter and it will come back to a little later im sure in the meantime thank you so much with a party to Boris Johnson has gone to twitter saying this thank you to everyone across the great country he said who voted to volunteer to serve as candidates we live in the greatest democracy in the world well the polls had indicated it could be a tight race and Boris Johnsons own constituency of oxbridge and south right slip emma haywood is live for us at the count in bridge and i just take us through who hes up against. But hes up against alley molony a Labor Campaign no major candidate hes been out on the streets ready for months of campaigning trying to get people on his side. There has been a real Momentous Campaign among from people here in the most different thing to try to oust Boris Johnson in this election were really not sure at this stage though whether that will work we know in 25th 2015 Boris Johnson came here with a healthy majority but that was hard back in 2017 so even if he wins tonight we expect his majority to be much much less it is getting louder here it is getting busy here as you can see behind me here the votes are being counted every now and again we had the printed word its getting more and more tense that it will get more tense as the night goes on but yes no given that Boris Johnson would win the seat he has the lowest majority of any sitting Prime Minister since the 1920 s. And if he was to be ousted that would really be uncharted territory but Boris Johnson certainly will come here tonight feeling very buoyant up by these predicted results however his Party Chairman jane cleverly has been saying hold on now we thought we have to hold on because we simply cant trust these results just yet dont get too excited just yet ok thanks very much well come back to you as and when there is a result joining us here in the studio announcer kevin cricket political commentator and owner to the labor party and Stephen Barber an economist from Regent University stephen it would be unprecedented i think you have to go back to 1004. 00 the last time that a sitting british Prime Minister lost his seat is we really in that territory he has a very marginal seat and there were rumors before the election that the johnson was going to be going to move seats so it would be a huge huge upset if not only the sitting Prime Minister last lost his seat but a sitting prime is who is looking at a very very large majority i suppose some wag yesterday or there before yesterday was saying he could actually declare himself a member of the house of lords and carry on but it wouldnt there are other ways yes or we could find someone who would it would vacate the seats and cause a byelection quite so what do you make of what we think the result might be its a very. Very big election if these exit polls are correct i mean johnson pursued a very risky electoral strategy here where he kind of almost wrote off seats in london and the Home Counties written off scotland if these exit polls are correct he hasnt lost seats in scotland hes probably lost some seats in in london if not his own but if these numbers are to be hits it means hes picked up large large numbers of traditionally labor seats in the millions in the north. Seems to be a fair analysis doesnt it kevin because if you look at where we think labor is doing well theyre doing well in london theyre not doing well in scotland theyre not doing well in the heartland so labor is being kind of pushed towards having to reinvent itself here because of this british thing called brecks it and also this election i think thats a really fair point because. Having spent a large amount of time campaigning across london over the past 6 weeks i have spoken to a lot of them pay shadow cabinet members whove been all around the country they have talked about this different election that youve just alluded to and in many ways were back where we were with the brics referendum where weve got very different elections going on in the country and i am surprised by these polls and flabbergasted because earlier on today the feedback that i was getting was that weve done surprisingly well wed rallied in the middle and wed rallied in the east the labor party was running out of the campaign boards used to go door knocking in several regions where we were under pressure and yet anything like the numbers in the exit poll issue should bad news and it does go back to bricks for me how much of this is done to germany corbins performance 2017 he had a Good Campaign everyone said the same thing yes he played a blind this one was it just a bit lackluster always that the message that was wrong labor had a very Good Campaign but a very good result for them. In 2017 not the same they didnt win the election but in 2017 you saw this this huge swathes of remain vote is essentially voting labor particularly in london but not only in london that doesnt seem to have happened this time for obvious reasons labor had a very confused bricks it strategy and breaks it position the conservatives on the other hand appear to have held onto most of their leave voters plus their own traditional the answers and thats the difference i think fast forwards Prime Minister back in number 10 sometime in january hes at the dispatch box hes opposite Jeremy Corbyn he knows the forces of labor darkness are moving against Jeremy Corbyn someplace on the backbench is somebody maybe thinking ok a star was looking good as a potential new leader who wants the thing that Jeremy Corbyn can say that can take a political chunk out of Boris Johnson if these figures are as good as we think they are well im going to say all night that a bit like in 2015 i find the exit poll literally incredible from my perspective both as a labor donor campaigner and political consultant that said hypothetically if the exit polls were even half as bad as predicted it is the end for jeremy called his leadership the labor party very quickly i would anticipate that John Mcdonnell would step into an acting leader role another then would be a open contest for what the next phase of labor looks like but we still dont know im sorry to keep saying this that this is going to happen it is very hard to compute the exit poll data with what i have seen on the ground in many places over the recent weeks given how much money youve given to the Labor Movement more slightly more personal question people criticized Jeremy Corbyn because they say actually 2 things one we dont know how he voted in the brics that referendum although hes on record as saying he voted very specifically and want to. Way issue number one issue number 2 they all say he never wanted to be Prime Minister he actually just got to hes got as a consequence of being a socialist a good socialist that wants you know good education good n. H. S. Good roads good public transport its not controversial to say that Jeremy Corbyn did not expect to win ok there was a regular process where members of the far left group put themselves up so it was a surprise what it has to be said to views of this channel it has not been a bad campaign for him though as you know ive seen thousands of young people come out again on the n. H. S. On the on the climate and all these things but basically we have a divided country again what is 650 by elections weve just had actually and regional factors and the way that mess just landed ive been totally different and anything like this exit poll is a change of leader in that i party very quickly but we still have to wait and see stephen very briefly was it also for labor what did for the issues of policy you know at the Party Conference when Jeremy Corbyn said actually were going to do away with private education and everyone who voted for tony blair in 97 then said oh well youve lost me and also this idea of nationalizing the railways again when Margaret Thatcher privatized them they were set up into being 23 Different Companies and that was political dogma but wasnt financing or economics that was if you have 23 Different Private Companies making loads of money you cant nationalize them i think this is certainly some truth in that particular when you look at where these seats are that labor has lost a lot of their own Traditional Seats so people you would expect to be traditional labor voters and this is also true of 20 something have been voting conservative youve almost got it the other way around in some seats so youd have more middle class voters voting voting labor because this also means theres a changing landscape for Boris Johnson hes going to turn up he might say its a nice problem to happen is going to turn up in parliament with that maybe im. Georgio of 80 plus. With not not the usual tory m. P. s from the shire but tory m. P. s representing northern traditionally labor seats and those votes is value the health they want money spent on Public Service is that just somewhat with the g. The right wing of his party the target of helping capture if you like and created prime mr johnson so. There are tricky time to have johnson as well i think you can say british politics is boring gentlemans for the moment thank you both so much. Coming up next here on this news hour from london the libyan warlord. On t. V. With a call to his forces to advance towards the center of tripoli importance calling the final battle for the capital. Last a day of mass protests. In an election where all 5 candidates have links to the ousted president. And could formula ones Lewis Hamilton end up in a ferrari peter has more in the sports news in about 30 minutes. The u. S. House of representatives and other news is moving closer to impeaching President Trump as the Judiciary Committee holds its final debate House Democrats are leading efforts to formally charge the president with abuse of power and an obstruction of congress mr trumps accused of withholding aid to ukraine to pressure it into investigating his potential white house rival joe biden and his son hunter lets get more now from mike hanna in washington so mike is this vote a foregone conclusion when it happens. It is very likely sir peter likely to go along partisan lines as the whole process has been going along partisan lines in the ongoing voting the many voting that has happened during this session of the Judiciary Committee they have been a number of issues voted on on procedure on whether or not other amendments should be introduced or whether or not another article should be introduced and in each case its been voted down by the same vote with the democrats in a majority in this 40 person chamber but it still continuing its still going on its been going on the whole day now serious coding to the rules of this hearing each representative is given 5 minutes to talk but on each of the articles so the representative to address one article and then can strike the last word as he or she would say and then go and address the other article that is an ongoing process so its very difficult to predict how long this proceeding is going to continue for that is essentially a long is a piece of string but certainly the debate is ongoing the discussion is ongoing but as you said the outcome is a foregone conclusion its going to be along party lines the Judiciary Committee is going to vote on these 2 articles of impeachment they in turn will go to the House Rules Committee which will rule when the vote will take place in the full house and what the rules of that particular vote will be mike thanks very much ok lets talk to Mary Frances Berry shes a professor of american thought and history of the university of pennsylvania and the formally of the church of the u. S. Commission on civil rights she joins us from washington Mary Frances Berry when this goes to the other house not one republican has said they will vote for it so forgive me for cerns naive whats the point. Well the point is there may be 3 or 4 republicans in the senate who vote against it who are in seats where they have some problems but he obviously is not going to be convicted trump wont be convicted in the senate we know that already and just as we know the house is going to vote if the point is that touch him up and to make it harder for him to win reelection because the same is that hes done and then that makes some sense although im beginning to get worried that taking up these 2 counts and not talking about all the other things and trump has done in terms of White Supremacy and his immigration policy in their chapter and verse of things that he may not touch him up on nuff with the voters to make it impossible for him to get reelected so i think part of the strategy was to impede his reelection even if the senate does not convict him which they wont so is this just the political process which is actually as part of all the election campaign. Well impeachment is a political process its understood to be won although there is a lot of talk about the legality and what you see going on now is political which is why everyone is making all these statements and making sure they get on the record and they know what the vote is going to be the only question is how many moderate democrats who are in districts that trump one will feel like they cant vote for these are vote for both of them but Everybody Knows that the speech of Speaker Pelosi has the votes and the votes d will be there and everyone knows that the senate will have a trial and then they will then they will acquit him and trump will claim victory and we and the democrats get hope as i said that he has been smeared enough by this process that it helps them in the Political Campaign so this is part of the continuing Campaign Going into 2020 as a political imperative isnt there an implicit risk therefore that the democrats actually end up making mr trump look better than he looks at the moment and gets around with surely would be if they kind of explicitly conjoined the ukraine issue with what mr muller was talking about all those months ago now even though there was no when he did his big reveal there was no Silver Bullet in what he had to say about the issue of collusion. Well the weakness of the democrats Public Relations case on the ukraine matter is the miller report and the failure to find collusion and when he said no american which would include trump they had anything to collude with the russians and there was a lot of disappointment because the moeller report came out and didnt do anything to help the cause along but in fact the ukrainian thing i dont im not sure that this will touch him up but none of them are or will he will be smeared enough i think all these other things as i said before that he did are things that could be highlighted his base is very strong there with them they will stay with them and when he is acquitted they will all cheer and they will all say and he will say hes been to cape Mary Frances Berry in washington thank you very much all right thank you u. S. Stocks have risen following reports the u. S. And china reached an in principle trade deal president from which it earlier that a big deal was near there were reports an interim phase one agreement had been reached washington is reported to have offered to reduce some tariffs on chinese goods and to lay a tranche of tariffs slated to go into effect on december the 15th the u. At least 2 people have been killed during major protests in indias state the unrest follows the passing of a controversial citizenship Amendment Bill in Parliament People that are some say they dont want to be in gali hindus to be given indian citizenship and reports now from go hearthrug which has been brought to a standstill by the protests. Another day of violent protests in assam and more tear gas fired to contain the crowd but not enough to drown the voice of thousands of protesters determined to defy a curfew and make themselves heard. The crackdown adding impetus to the protesters slogans rejecting the newly passed citizenship Amendment Bill or cab. Hello there is no doubt about it winter is very much in place across much of canada and northern sections of the United States a lot of weather coming in as well with this cold air weve got rain and snow in the mix as well snow into minneapolis on friday notice how as cold as it has been minus 6 the averages monastery this time of year and also not as cold up into winnipeg even though its minus 12 the average is minus 10 a blanket of caffrey much of the east into Eastern Canada and role of the heavy rain on friday pushing into the southeast of the United States a wet day in atlanta the rain and snow coming on shore out across the west and as we go through saturday it does tend to make its way further east with so really the snow is just through the southern sections of the rockies that plenty of snow elsewhere that rain pushes off shore and then it really begins to build and push up into the northeast so very unpleasant day on saturday some pretty strong winds around as wild bunch of shots through much of the caribbean fairly widespread but eastern areas pushing across into the Dominican Republic also because a few showers to the west im home as me while not sure about the into Central America it will some mostly dry weather in place so you can say guatemala most secure with a high of 23 but cloudy and havana with a high of 28. Will have certainly left the European Union but that only brings a whole new set of questions the. The carolyn have a timetable of a year to negotiate a new trade deal between the u. K. And the and its far from clear what that will be possible and what portions may have to do to make that happen so while hes in the ascendancy in the u. K. Hes still facing the same difficulties as hes felt as this as the government for the last 3 years in brussels ok it looks like the electorate have given Boris Johnson a huge mandate which he will say is clearly a huge plus for him but theyve then we the electorate have been got to drill down into the deal is it canada light is it because were back were back back there on what is it norway plus plus how does it work so yeah i mean this this result means that Boris Johnson can decide and one level youve got maybe a no deal w. At the end of december thats one option the other option would be huge alignment with the European Union to get some sort of trade deal over the line within a year so theres that series of the choices suddenly looks probably a bit more like canada the norway but a lot of alignment or no deal at all and thats the 2 sort of start the vinery choice facing facing versions and when Boris Johnson picks up the phone and says hello can you put me through to the d u p please in Northern Ireland hows that conversation going to go because the backstop has become a front stop but just in the past 36 hours unless you can have Border Guards wearing scuba gear in the middle of the irish sea they would there are going to have to be checks on the island of ireland i mean the labor party done very badly in this in this election but maybe perhaps the d. How long do you think itll take labor to come back from this because they will maybe now try to style them so. Has been some sort of walking talking system of checks and balances on Boris Johnson when it comes to the deal and they clearly will want to critique the deal or what the deal may become because were also heading back to those bad old days of having meaningful votes even if hes got the numbers so that hes majority of Boris Johnson what makes it even easier with the labor party will be in complete internal turmoil completely unsure what what the labor party would even would even do next where would it tackle itzhak for the left will attack back to the right hes going to be in charge of the Party Leadership is going to be in huge trouble is going to be sunk hes going to be the next leader during this crucial year for brics it is a completely answer questions because this result was so unexpected very briefly they kept the g group the European Reform Group super quiet during the campaign will they make it will they make a comeback theyll try that they want to be heard because Boris Johnsons got all this room for maneuver he can basically do what he wants he can ignore the he wants alan thank you very much weve now had results in from the 1st 2 constituencies newcastle and sunderland in the northeast of england both of which have been held by the labor party lets wrap up some of the top stories for you polls are closed in algeria in an election thats been described as a sham by protesters for 10 months the countrys been in political turmoil with big demonstrations leading to the resignation of the long term president Abdelaziz Bouteflika but protesters say this election is still not free and fair because all 5 president ial candidates too close to the old regime has been outspent. This was just the opening phase of a case thats likely to last for years its alleged that me and soldiers raped murdered and tortured reading good muslims as part of attempts to wipe out the ethnic group claims backed up by United Nations investigators in her closing statement myanmars leader Aung San Suu Kyi again didnt address the specific allegations but called on the case to be thrown out there my requests a court to remove the case from its this in the alternative to reject the requests for the indication of provisional measures submitted and again if approved those measures would involve the court ordering me and miles government to ensure the security of the rigging so certainly if the court would order provisional measures its that on 1st glance with not of intense of fact finding on 1st glance that there is probably acts of genocide a decision on that could be made within weeks. With Aung San Suu Kyi here leading me in my defense the 1st phase of this case became as much about her as the government or military would this former campaign of human rights used the opportunity to finally show some sort of contrition or sympathy towards the ring she didnt and she leaves with her International Reputation lower than when she arrived seeing her in court having to listen to the evidence would have provided some satisfaction for the rich who once believed she would be the one to fight for their rights now its become an International Fight for justice when hey al jazeera the hague. Well and 700000 muslim martyr neighboring bangladesh after the military. Is in coxs bazaar where the refugees are closely following the proceedings of the hague. These are the people who endured those horrendous atrocities at the hands of me and morris military these are the people who are being referred to when it comes to the case at the International Court of justice now many of them are aware of the hearing some of them have been able to get information on their mobile phones others dont know about it all some of the people weve been speaking to think that this could potentially be a 1st step into being able to go back home but many people also tell you that they dont understand the real legalities the details of what is happening there. That you will get justice since the whole world has now put them on trial i hope our situation will change as a result of that i hope it opens up the opportunity for us to return home peacefully people here been calling for justice for a very long time its been almost 2 and a half years since that offensive in august of 2017 was so hundreds of thousands of people flee here in the space of just a couple of weeks but these people also want to go home and many people will tell you that the ruling of the International Court of justice and that may take time will probably not be able to give that to them theres a lot of challenges ahead when it comes to seeing how theyll be able to go back home weve just been speaking to the head of the u. N. Refugee agency here in bangladesh and he said even if repatriation started tomorrow it would get it would take an incredibly long time until you process this amount of people this is a city of refugees equivalent to the population of some of the world cities but each of them has a story of her endless horrors tragedy and trauma.
