Heading to cabo for consultations with Afghan Government leaders to see what they think of the proposals but hopes of peace during the talks have been overshadowed by an attack by taliban fighters in the northern afghan city of clinton as they took over several buildings Early Saturday Morning before the military deployed reinforcements by evening the government said it had repelled the fighters killing at least 56 of them 7 civilians and 20 soldiers also diets bharata gopal a salmi is a senior fellow at the Observer Research foundation and was a member of Zalmay Khalilzad survives or a group and he says the talks will be successful if they end on washingtons terms you know what goes into the context of the us going into elections next year and president and think of Something LikePresident Trump would want to script a victory speech or Something Like this so essentially if you have that as a starting point where you want to put a batter on what a victory speech looks like and that then that defines the terms of what a deal would look like and that would be a very weak water shed be ill be the taliban essentially where we want to pull the troops back home close up heading to kabul to have a negotiation with the up got it. The taliban have essentially a great you know what if used to recognize the existence of the Afghan Government and for me Prince Police speaking this was the whole. An attack on the u. S. And its allies that can be traced back to the u. S. Be a consular but that does not mean you know the u. S. The neighborhood is that it is a larger risk. And i think you know. It gets in the hands you know like you know weve been we spent 2 weeks in england so we need to speak up before the you say this is my time to go on this let me know what is the sound that was to me that was just. A few of the actions that that makes it was you know its a lot to pull together but it sounds to me that. This week. Sarah clarke has more from the airports. The right place moved in in the last hour and a half or so and completely scant it other protesters who gathered here below us on the ground floor there would have been a few 1000 of those protesters here and what they had managed to do was they look at other roads on the way in and theyre blocking the roads now theyre also blocking from the trains that trying to leave or around this area and it just took me by may call to me but the roughly 70 were affected on the grounds that they did get them out of the airport but theres still some chaos here on the grounds that no planes have been canceled all planes are going to head the passengers have struggled to make it to the airport due to the traffic chaos another round of u. Counting the cost. Hello and welcome again to 31 and come out santa maria here on rewind were revisiting some of the best and most influential programs from more than a decade of documentaries in the aljazeera archive as well as bringing you news of how the story has moved on since i can 979 the world woke up to news that the russian army had swept across the border into afghanistan in an attempt to prop up the communist government there it followed 18 months of civil unrest after the Peoples Democratic party seized power in 178. 00 however the p. D. P. Radical plans including land reforms and equality of the sexes as well as modernizing traditional islamic civil and marriage laws it all spawned the guerrilla Resistance Movement known as the mujahideen what followed was a decade of bloody civil war with pakistan in the United States covertly supporting the islamic rebels against russian backed government forces. It was the beginning of 4 decades of violence and unrest for that troubled country back in 2009 aljazeera sports presenter Andy Richardson discovered that the turbulence of those early years had had a surprising side effect here is proud to be an afghan. Co white isnt the most obvious of places for any cricketing story to begin but it was here in 2007 that afghanistan won their 1st ever continental trophy and theyre back here again in 2010 playing in another Asian Cricket Council event now 3 years ago 2028 was just starting to take hold of the cricketing world and wed heard reports that one emerging team in particular was pretty good at it that team of course was afghanistan. This was the moment back in 2007 when afghanistan thought theyd become asias inaugural 2020 champions. Was in fact the chaos was just beginning the match was about to controversially be declared a tie. 6 6 6 thankfully for all concerned the bulk of the event had passed off in somewhat calmer 1st in. Afghanistan were it seems intent on getting hold of their 1st major trophy all the you would love to play this game so there is no cause after. You have a talented teams and not only the National Side we were very good games as well i in the history of our downfalls you know this is the 1st time that i want to stand. The country was. They were already learning how to celebrate this was the low key manner in which afghanistan marks the semifinal victory against the United Arab Emirates. The final was against oman and established force in asian cricket and it seemed every afghan living in kuwait was in attendance the match went down to the last ball armands batsman needed just a single run to tie the schools. Was was. Now at this point it appeared the afghan scene had warned. That but on the sidelines some official forehead wrinkling had begun suddenly the results was in doubts and yet after a little more arithmetic and for talking the match was declared a toy im on an afghanistan with joint champions. And out of the division and are going to start all in the credit of the doubt are going to miss out are very happy and this is theres a power to stay up by my life. The trophy may not have stayed around for long but afghanistans cricket team had a right. That was a change you know what pick it up a lot of support from the people i think there was 14000 people was going to watch the Magic Johnson that was that was so from that time didnt the players one thing that we should need to win the straw meant we didnt get any traffic before that and then we get back to kabul afghanistan a lot of people come to our hotel and theres sharing with the players and this elaborate enough so that. People just love to play cricket and watch to because of the casino to them and whether that victory changed cricket in our country before that everyone said to us youre wasting your time the government wont support you guys people dont know about cricket theres no reason for you guys to play but when we won that tournament it changed peoples minds people saw that something good can come from cricket and look at that was a real turning point for them because that gave them a lot of confidence that they can beat any team in asia that has inspired them and now the only thing they want us to rein. Not being number 2. Is fantastic. The history of cricket in afghanistan is also a history of occupation and conflict the 1st recorded match in the country was between british soldiers back in the 19th century and the ongoing conflict means this side as yet supply an International Match in their own country but for the origins if this thing you have to go back to another war and serve it afghan war of the 1970 s. And eightys. In 1979 the serviette army thank you duf gonna stand. Hundreds of thousands of afghans sought refuge in neighboring pakistan. In the years that followed more than 3000000 afghans were forced over the border and into refugee camps. It was here that a generation of young afghans found themselves playing and watching a new game that was already a longest average passion in pakistan. That game was cricket. These days rice armont see an hour as mungo are key members of the afghanistan cricket same both were brought up in refugee camps near the shower in pakistans Northwest Frontier Province that earliest cricketing memories seeing t. V. Pictures of the 9092 world cup tournament that was won by pakistan. I was in the bad a bear refugee camp when we 1st went there we used to play. Again thats like baseball but then came the 992 world cup and suddenly cricket was everywhere everyone was talking about it we all started playing and i became good very quickly i was in school and that charming to have when i was in the refugee camp and particularly. In pakistan when the 1902 world cup i was in the in the park lost in that time. Everyone was happy the teacher was deliberately shut the whole pakistan in the world cup you see thats whats whats whats what of course slowly slowly will start cricket with a tennis ball or maybe 5 or 6 years we played without shoes or without anything. Cricket and then the 50 or 45. 00 sending it to. School that was small. It bounced sikandar was part of the pakistan saying that one got 92. 00 world cup hes now the Asian Cricket Councils man in afghanistan overseeing the Games Development and mentoring this squad of players 92. 00 world cups and the discussion of race because that was a great inspiration you know from a captain who led from the front a team that responded so positively i was very fortunate to be part of the team that came back from no way to become the World Champion afghanistan when we has been at war for the last 30 years now they have seen nothing but war and then moving from a gun to stand to pakistan living in their few d. Camps have made them really really tough and that is the toughness that is. Very evident in the matches that theyre playing they dont care about that bouncy because they dont care about turning pitches you know if its a bad pitch or bad conditions they dont care about that the only thing they know and they want to do is do a. Few players better embody that spirit than hamid hassan that seems fastest bowler he also led his cricket in a refugee camp he remembers the day a fellow player at sensitive convince his father it was time for the young commie aid to start taking cricket seriously. It came to our home increases to my dad let them go home we need to plan for afghanistan and he says no i can let them go because he i want to make him a teacher like a doctor like ingenius or he dont want to play cricket and i said to my dad i love to play cricket. The 1st time i went to run in 2000 through to travel in a play cricket in 1st game i took 4 wickets. And also had some success in the matter. Everybody who is going where he came from. This is the ground where he made 1st played in kabul right now its the only dress pitch in afghanistan but more are planned and that seems shared ambition is to one day play an International Match in their home country if you played. Against pakistan or against bangladesh or against any or full member countries if he if he too i dont if he certainly people im sure 100000 people will be come to watch the match cricket was yes played there but in a very small way now its the number one game in afghanistan and. That is taking them away from the streets. Where the only thing they knew was to carry guns and fight now instead of guns they killing cricket bats. This team has now carried their bats around the world. In cricket the name afghanistan is associated only with success and progress. But no one could have guessed just how good this side was about. Afghanistans cricket team was formally recognized by the sports world governing body in 2001 at the time they had no world ranking and no home ground they did have was a supremely talented generation of players and so began one of the most unlikely journeys in sporting history. The european Channel Island of jersey was afghanistans next stop with the financial backing of the international and Asian Cricket Councils the team were entered into division 5 of the World Cricket League the lowest tier of the international game. Ball this certainly wasnt but a familiar scene was soon to unfold afghan cricketers celebrating a tournament win on foreign soil now. More talk is followed in asia africa even south america the refugee camps where it all began suddenly seemed a long way away before. Ford was that ive got to get back to Something Else i thought of it oh we had a coach who told us that cricket would give us the chance to see the world i thought he was crazy how could we ever go to europe or the rest of the world he taught all of the players that. That respect the pads. Respect you were cant respect you would care respect you are your your your all cricket equipment and you guys will be trouble by the way the reason of cricket you will be see or. Doing that if you cant be specially i will thing that the whole war will be the same. The whole world to see it same kind of how simple life no television no electricity knowing today we dont know about mentor name. They didnt even know how to show it good the only thing they knew was to just get on the donkey and cross the border going to pakistan their attitude has changed. You know their warrior instinct is still there but its mellowed down a bit by now afghanistan had a full time coach overseeing their rise through the World Rankings former pakistan test player cab a car on board where most of the players had also started life there was an immediate bond sometimes ask them a question what is your dream what do you want to do and what can be your best moment of all and this is our best moment of her life is when our flag goes up and when our National Anthem isnt. Being played there in the studio they say we love those the more we play for that there was some help as well obviously from cord from there because in the games and we were losing the rain came in some sometimes and you think badly Cayman Island and it would be trained only for 56 and i would just look at it. And ive never seen that in my life. By early 2010 the team had made it as far as dubai. And the final qualifiers for that c 20 world cup theyre defining game was against the United Arab Emirates one more win in a world cup. Place would be there as. The high stakes were reflected in some visibly nervy performances. The u. A. E. Scored just 100 runs in that 20 overs. I. Afghanistan had chased ball biggest schools all over the world but never with saw much riding on the outcome. It was now that all their hard earned experience of life and cricket can together they held their collective nerve and the winning runs were scored with just 3 balls to spare. Afghanistan were on their way to the world cup. The kept in the world among them told me that. Scratch me that im dreaming or know if you qualify for the world cup. I said there was one guy who qualified for the work of a new play in the world cup. So now this team is getting ready to go to the t 20 world cup in the west indies afghanistan ranked as one of the 12 best sides in the world but their draw well that could hardly be toughened theyre up against it 6007 World Champions india and one of the favorites to win the tournament south africa i think these 2 countries in the in in the in my mind number one in number 2 in the world and right now cricket bowling batting feeling everything is 100 points and but our players is going to beat your and they played in different conditions but not easy for them. For india or for. Tank every single one of them and im hearing them and theyre talking amongst themselves theyre only talking about winning the game our mission is all it wants us to win the world cup so thats another sometimes i take it as a pressure sometimes i think its good for the players as well because the players are not thinking about anything of they just werent thinking about winning the games remember the wider cricketing world has heard much but seeing little of afghanistan now that its all about situations they feel theyve gone from raw lots of coal into polish diamonds terrific ambassadors for their game for their country and for the spirits of human success other countries have grounds theyve got slaughtered got nets they got bats and balls the equipment ive got so i had nothing till has very little these cricket has represent the absolute pinnacle of their sport and their country. On may the 1st the caribbean island of solutia will be the stage for afghanistans 1st world cup match against india. The Afghanistan Cricket Team on their own terms and in defiance of sporting logic will be standing side by side with the worlds best. When you see other teams cricketing backgrounds if a city that others and you think ok they have got a bit of enjoying you but then if there were no laws in the world cup thats going to be another story but its still my heroes and obviously i personally think that im proud of this team. Theyre doing for peace and 3 want to change the mind of the people that that water water is really bad and we want. That the whole country to come like like like the unity like we have in our team. Was we have not decided to legarda countries how we are still know how ground kidneys nothing nor centuries and we are just being for our country and we replay far from hard. For a country to resent our country. Proud to be an afghan from 2001 or what better way to catch up with this film than with 2 of its main players in the studio with us here Andy Richardson of course who created that film in 2009 and joining us from kabul as well weve got recent ones i know who you also saw there so gentlemen thank you so much for joining us do appreciate it and lets start with you what has become of this afghan team since 2009 im thinking about actually 29000 cricket world cup in england the 10 top teams in the world and afghanistans in amongst them its been an incredible story i mean we were really lucky to aljazeera really look at the chance across them if you like we went to a tournament in kuwait in 2007 and it wasnt covered afghanistan cricket saying it was to cover the emergence of 2020 cricket and how important it was going to be for the future of developing cricketing nations but as soon as we got there to this tournament it was very quickly apparent it was one starting then that was afghanistan everybody was talking about them even though the tournament was being played in kuwait they had hundreds of expat fans all around the ground watching them and it was very quickly apparent that they were going to be the rising stars in this one its a to tell you that the teams they were playing in 2007 at the start of the film hong kong kuwaits malaysia and the power omar qatar saudi arabia singapore and the u. A. E. Are not the worlds greatest theres 190. 00 and theyre playing their part of the top 10 in the world 16 in an incredible journey in the fact that from 2007 when we 1st found them they were in a world cup of tea 20 world cup within 3 years it shows you how much talent that Country House well lets bring reese in then from kabul well what do you 1st of all tell us what youre actually up to these days im working with. I want to start a good war. I was i was a good note. I took way retirement from the International Cricket in 2010 i become the after one year i became the head of Selection Committee and. Director of what is on a cricket board and different position work with the junior level players work with the National Side but now our days im working with the one in stand under 19. Team is a head coach race its on the head great to see younger now than you did 10 years ago. First of all the experiences you had 10 years ago when you were playing with that emerging scene one of the key messages you try and give to Young Players now the specially the messages for the for the for the young generation and we are just feeling their way we start cricket with that with nothing to sell it is and im going to stay on lots of people have no idea what cricket everyone was just saying that cricket is belong but when its on belong to pakistan because there are a few people who when they come from pakistan the people of kabul they were thinking that cricket is a pakistani game but there was no idea and now everyone knows about cricket cricket is really a popular game and we are in the young generation to be out of the of the are very lucky the idea of a good good support from the family side the government supporting the cricket board is supporting so cricket is the number one sport and im going to stand all the youngster i want to play cricket so does cricket have a positive knock on effect for young people in fact for the whole country race when we think about afghanistan we think unfortunately about war and unrest does sports does cricket specifically have a positive impact there. Yeah were going to give you youre going to go to give a good name or 2 to understand i remember when i was the captain when we were going to do we had a match and i cant remember the exact name of the religion i think it was or this link it was a very small village we had a cricket match there and the people of that really do as ive no idea about about im going to start there were just you were just knew of where you stand because just up war and you mentioned at the start of this you talked about t 20 cricket 2020 cricket the short version of the game which is actually where all the money is now theres all these circuits all over the world and theyre at their cricket is making money have there been afghan players whove managed to get into that as well i think one of the really interesting things about afghanistan cricket in cricket is that the culture is emerging a very different way in every sense referring to it there we think of it as a game that is the product of british colonialism it was left as a legacy of empire if you like afghanistan cricket is merged in a completely different way and these guys 15 years ago were learning cricket in pakistan in refugee camps there was no legacy from from the english and as a consequence they learned their cricket in a very tough way street cricket playing table cricket meant bowlers emerged of the world of the like no one had ever seen in the world and as a consequence now they are like gold dust amazing changes since 2000 and isnt it gentlemen great to have both of you with us. So how and why has this crisis developed and what the protesters want. In the 1st of 2 special reports people in power traces the dramatic evolution of hong kong summer of defiance on a. This is aljazeera. Hello and welcome im peter w. Watching the news. Live from our headquarters here in doha coming up in the next 60 minutes a new standoff in hong kong protesters blocked roads to the airport target Train Services a day after some of the most intense clashes in months. China hits back at the u. S. With billions of dollars in tariffs and a sharp escalation of the trade war. Also this the rise of a dictator Moammar Gadhafi is coup 50 years ago shaped libyas turbulent history plus. I was near mosul and ill tell you how changing water levels led to the discovery of one of the most ancient cities that iraq has found and now high water levels have submerged it once again. And in sport it was a night of drama in the top flight of the time from napoli a gift champions event with an injury time on board was one of the most training games of the season so far. Ok lets get going roads into hong kongs airports are blocked and thousands of people are struggling to get to and from it as a new standoff looms with the protesters the Hong Kong Government has stopped trains to the airport that happened early on sunday as crowds began growing outside the main terminal building protest organizers are keeping up the pressure on the territories government to scrap an extradition bill respond to the demands for reform now this comes a day after some of the most chaotic scenes that we have seen in months outside the airport travelers have been forced to abandon their cars and buses instead of that theyre walking in the past half hour riot police have begun moving in to clear away the debris the airport authorities were awarded an injunction banning protesters from gathering inside the airport after mass demonstrations in august lets the council. Flights for several days on the trot lets go live now to sarah clarke whos at the airports main terminal in the Hong Kong Sara give us a sense of where you are and what youre seeing and hearing. Well its quite chaotic here at the airport you mentioned up past just trying to were struggling to get to the airport we have thousands of passengers now trying to get out of the airport because those protests is when they were cleared by riot police they managed to walk towards which is a district to cover climbers in front of us and theyve managed to block the rail line now that rail line that was the main axis one of the busiest ways of the best ways of getting up here so that it would express fine has been suspended coming in do you think government cancellation that the protesters have stopped giving out so we have a backlog of thousands of people now trying to exit the airport we just see the truck the 1st try and go through it also put on buses down below me on the ground floor and thats managing to get some passengers out but as you can imagine this is a very very busy airport so thousands of people are stranded here while theyre trying to work out how to get the white back into Hong Kong City and were talking about the Metro Railway station sero thats what about 10 or 15 minute walk from the main terminal when we talk about people being stranded are we in effect saying they are trapped inside that little terminal building. Where the airport that to control with that particular District Line thats where the protesters are now rallying and i believe those protesters are now vandalizing graffiti and tearing down some of the compounds breaking into some of the stores in that particular area thats the end of a very busy trying line thats where the protesters were dispersed to when the right place came in and moved them out there were no ballot clashes but certainly we saw them scatter in a number of Different Directions so were seeing passengers on that District Line being backed locked and as well as where we are now and at the moment its a sunday night in hong kong its a very very busy time so what these protesters wanted to do it was close transport and economic destruction and thats what theyve now. To achieve even though theyre only here for a few hours other measures to block roads and ryo a getting out of hong kong airport as far as youre aware sarah is what were looking at right now because as youre talking to us were looking at live pictures and the most recent pictures is this only happening in the location around the airport or is it happening across hong kong. Now its only happening around the airport as i mentioned that to me to line which is again a very busy lines were also the commuters on the home from macau do highbridge a bio come to that particular line as well so its a very very busy routes that the commute is tight thats where the bad the protests have moved to its about a 15 minute walk when they were dispersed they went along the highway and the bench to converge there i know that so i met you before the child line here is starting the film 2 lines and they are continuing but the focus is certainly whats the right place move them from here they mention managing to create havoc in that trying line in the District Line which is about again to come at us from here but again a very very busy line but for the moment the police are still here in hong kong airport a secure the heart presence of trying to keep any questions from going to come back to keep them out of the security presence is checking every single passenger must show their boarding pass and a passport to get here because theyre trying to stop what happened a few weeks ago it was just a window these protesters sashimi here for 3 days that camped out here and we had a couple of 1000 Flights Canceled and the fear is its having an Economic Impact to you on hong kong the various airlines including Cathay Pacific want to sign passengers up into to coming here purely because of the protests and what these protests are doing at the airports so at the moment the practice is moved further back into whats the sense of but here at the airport this too kyra as you were talking to us there sara we were watching some live pictures a couple who were being helped by the riot police. In a while. Underneath what looks like an overhead motorway maybe the metro line but clearly would it be fair to say that the riot police are being told do not get involved yet do not react yet lets this let this just kind of similar and fizzle if indeed it is going to simmer and fizzle out. Or this particular crisis the right place moved in much faster than they did a couple of weeks ago when this whole airport was paralyzed by the protesters that did move in but there were no violent clashes we didnt see any arrests either there probably were a couple of 100 right place here but they were going to be several 1000 up protesters that has been living this particular protest before weve got more protests planned again tomorrow when i say i just general strike to be told on monday and tuesday is also 2 more protests the rallies that been planned and approved by police so by the looks of this protest its not going away sara thank you very much the scene is there any more develops of course well cross back live to our correspondents covering that story on the ground in. The trade war between the worlds top 2 economies is being stepped up the United States started imposing another round of terrorists on chinese imports and china has raised import taxes on 75000000000. 00 worth of American Goods between you has more now from beijing. Shoppers come to beijing send you only market to buy all kinds of imported food including american greg cherries but its fast becoming a casualty of chinas trade with the u. S. Tariffs have already gone up twice pushing the price of a killer to around 25. 00 and from to temper the 1st tariffs on u. S. Cherries will be raised from 50 to 60 percent then it is looking for cheaper alternatives to what the chinese through is a very good the price is much cheaper than American Products the quality is also very good so more and more people are choosing local produce higher prices are the only reason shoppers are considering buying less from the u. S. For me being pretty arctic is something more important for me to consider than the price we are trainees and we are all affected that by the time the us treats war cherries may be the most Popular American product at this market but its not the only for it that will receive higher tariffs new judges will also apply to things like american palms graves and apples 75000000000. 00 worth of u. S. Goods will see tariffs of between 5 and 10 percent china will also reinstate import taxes of 25 percent on u. S. Cars in december the hikes are the chinese governments response to the trumpet ministrations voters trade and over 10 percent tariffs on 3 100000000000. 00 worth of chinese goods also coming into effect in september and december analysts say the u. S. President has been a confusing and unreliable negotiating partner i dont think the President Trumps remarks here is because. We are some very the stick figure. In order to push you lets talk there you must get. A much bigger stick chinas comus Ministry Says it doesnt want to escalate tensions and is open to more talks with the u. S. But it would again underestimating chinas willingness to dig its heels in for the long fight if you fight back if your talk good to talk but we have principles will never yield our principles by weakening its currency and developing new trade partnerships china is taking steps to ensure its economy is less vulnerable to any new moves by truck in the trade. And as demand for things like the rest cherry slow research chinas finding cheaper alternatives from countries such as pakistan and chile are ripe for the picking between e. U. Aljazeera beijing. Lets have a look at this tit for tat era situation between the us and china and the imposing those tariffs on each other of course last year total trade between the 2 countries amounted to just over 700 37000000000. 00 since then it has dropped considerably despite Donald Trumps stated aim to rebalance trade the gap has actually widened with chinese imports from the u. S. Dropping more than 30 percent in the month of june the targeted items in the new round of tariffs ranged from cheese to clothing and accessories its estimated to cost the average American Household an extra 1000. 00 a year the trade war is also putting pressure on the Global Economy the International Monetary fund cited trade tensions when it cut projections for Global Growth to the lowest its seen since 2009 lets bring in dan wang joining us live from beijing shes a china analyst at the Economist Intelligence unit course the direct impact on chinese households here. Well if we look at the trade or impacts us so far the directly impact is actually very small so part of the reason is that the negative impact is mitigated by the devaluation of r. And b. If we look at a regional economy we can see that as some of the regional impact have already started to show especially for coastal exports or province like quandong. Foods in so a lot of the smaller factories in those areas are consolidating and its heating up but fortunately a lot of those late autumn laid off workers are actually absorbed by the growing Services Sector so the pain of unemployment caused by the trade war is actually not as painful as president trauma suggested ok if there are regional impacts in those coastal regions that youre talking about what are the chances that be in effect become toxic and spread across china in its entirety. Im not too pessimistic about this prospect to yet at least not in act 2 years the main reason is that chinas demand and a growth is mainly relying on
