In coxs bazaar theyve been protesting over camp conditions and the unresolved status bangladeshs warning that it no longer can bear the economic burden of more than a 1000000 Rohingya Refugees many have resisted efforts at repair tradition saying that their safety cant be guaranteed young a levy is the United Nations special rapporteur for me emma she says the conditions in myanmar are not fit for the remainder to return. I do remember my 1st job prison where i was welcomed by being beaten by the by the officers i remember one of the pregnant from my hand and begin to look my head towards the wall and its back to my face and begin to slap me and this is the place where they say to welcome i think years later and now the prison conditions and joe is in that swartz conditions since 2017 some of those inmates did not see their families for a single time because because that they refused the started to impose a punitive measures that no longer tolerable by the prison things like just various so they cannot really even have a direct contact with their families and its been the case for 2 years that some of those inmates did not had a single time in a visitation a systematic denial or american negligence so there are serious diseases within the prison that people are concerned that they dont really get even a proper treatment they dont know their medications the situation with comes into the prison facilities and its overcrowding you talk about a president that was supposed to have only 6 inmates it got in some cases 12 in some cases even 18 individuals day in and out of water and they had a bad food in many cases they do commented mess numbers of individuals being facing Food Poisoning just because of the poor quality of the food when some of their own out of air conditioning ran out of water and they cannot even if left the toilet which is the 2nd there so this is how bad it is and the killing of a mother by her exhusband in front of her child of course outrage in turkey i mean a bullet was stabbed to death in a cafe last sunday in the Central Texas city have a kakali according to one womens rights group many 250 women were killed in the country this year alone and some people are now taking the fight for justice to social media mohamed reports. I dont like reacting to such situations by tweeting or hashtags but this time i really do care i feel so story im highly affected by i will join the protests taking place and encourage everyone to take part. These are the reason for murder is justified femicide she betrayed thats why i killed she was not a virgin thats why i killed she was dressed improperly thats why i killed society has accepted those reasons but under normal circumstances the punishment of murder is a life sentence. James kuranda has tried to kill himself 3 times when he was born it wasnt clear to doctors or his parents if he was male or female and so he says a childhood of misery began but he says some things have since improved for intersex people here in kenya. The governments now conducting a census is the 1st in africa to recognize intersex people turn it into typical males and females there was a realisation that intersex children are being killed most of these children cannot even access simple Government Services then there was a need. To have policies the pill onto into 6 pieces. It will make us to be seen to be kenyans it is valid its us that we are actually a demographic but weve been there most of the current population. The government hopes most of the data can be collected in 2 evenings. Trying to do some funny games asking people to move this way or that way we. Do with the law. Collecting accurate data is a challenge about 10000000 kenyans and their magic herders who regularly cross borders to neighboring countries millions more live in slums like this one has no official list of addresses so the government has ordered bars and pubs to close and told everyone to stay home and wait for the enumerators to come and knock at the door. They push the Data Collection takes days processing it takes much longer what is so my house and national. This is techno innovations that can change lives the science of fight fire were going to explore the intersection of hardware in humanity who are doing it the unique way. This is a show about science. By scientists. Techno investigates gold at any cost. We travel deep into the rain forests of peru these illegal Mining Operations except for miles and miles away from the main highway to uncover a gold rush thats turning lush jungle into utter devastation High Pressure water hoses and blasted out and its not just the land people are stepping into my carry on filled tour as im an entomologist ive conducted Extensive Research in this rainforest so this story is personal really pains me to see this breed to davis and is a biologist specializing in ecology and evolution now she shows us the high tech tools that are exposing what even the i cant see so where its blood red thats where the mercury pollution is the most intense well share our findings with Lindsay Moran shes an ex cia analyst thats our team. Everything weve been saying its for this no its do some signs. Hey guys welcome to techno im photo was joined by Lindsay Moran emirates a davidson this upcoming episode is an important one to me takes place in true or have done a lot of my research and it is a tale of contrasts we will see rain forest full of new species and then we will see the devastation that humans have done to extract gold and as we know with devastating stories like this where theres a lot of damage science can play are all here not just in monitoring and discovering whats going on but in trying to help process i think this is a story having looked at some of the images that one image of the devastation pretty much says it all absolutely this is an important story its one thats very near and dear to my heart and it starts in the proving rain forest. The amazon rain forest for more than 50000000 years its been a cradle of life. This is what pristine rain forest looks like. Lush. Untamed. Bursting with wildlife but maybe not for long because the soil underneath is laced with gold and the human desire for it can turn all of this. Into a toxic waste land like this. This is love pomponne in the buffer zone of the pot to National Reserve its part of more than 100000 acres of rainforest improved that have been decimated by an illegal gold rush. To investigate techno travel deep into peru to a region called bodger it did the us the mother of god its one of the most biodiverse areas on the planet and the source of 70 percent of the illicit gold produced each year in peru brought a flight into the area called mighty strong look at the window edge all ready. To. Be arrived at the model not the regions capital in a gold mine. Is what. An estimated 30000 illegal miners work in modern day that the us chances are you might find some of them here to sew gold were by equipment i stopped in to one of the shops to look around at a place called amazon gold and right we walk in and theres a sign this is going to order me i buy gold and as i exchange my money there was a little scale right in front of me still had some gold dust on it from past exchanges but this sign was removed as soon as our camera was spotted. For tomorrow mother who is also a place in transition while many of its roads are still dirt paths the new intrusion of highway his opened up the area to the wider world people come from all over the country to work the golf fields here miles Luis Ferdinand is director of the carnegie amazon murray creek ecosystem project hes been studying gold money toxic legacy in the amazon since 2000. So now miners have better access to the remote force they can get their equipment their trucks everythings easier because of that our everythings easier its essentially part of the perfect storm that is mother. So not only do you have a brand new highway that makes transport easier you have read. Good high gold prices and the preexisting condition of extreme poverty. Tell me about this illegal gold mining what is a process where really on the edge between the amazon in the andes and or roge and over millions of years have worn down the rocks of the andes which are gold rich and all that sediment has washed down the river. Next stop a mining area near look pompous but that can be dangerous for an outsider. The only way into this spot is on the back of a motorbike. The going is tough. And. Makeshift bridges dont always hold up. As we get closer to trees give way to something hard to grasp. Impossible to put into words. So where we are now should be rain forest and get the rain but the forest is missing having done so much work in the areas that have perceived rain forest it really pains me to see this the only way to get a handle on the devastation is to understand how illegal miners get to the goal. They start by clearing the trees so the process is one thats very very primitive. You use High Pressure water hoses and blast it out of. The water dissolves the soil removing anything in it thats organic you concentrate it using sluices which kind of looks like a slide where you run a slurry of the sediments over carpets. Which captures the tiny flecks of gold that you find in the sediments the process can turn primary rain forest into this in a matter of days. Something in the bud this is president of a Small Community of miners who worked them on one river nearby even she was disturbed by the level of destruction other miners had done to this land yet i fadi if the land and the idea that it ok better take one if it or not but mining does more than strip of forest bare miners bring in mercury to extract those tiny flecks of gold. Mercury has a very unique characteristic of binding with gold forming an amalgam for a minor its almost like magic if theres any question as to whether or not this area was contaminated with mercury the answer is right here. In the film amazon gold documented miners working with mercury at a mine deep in the rainforest people are stepping into mercury people are stepping into that mix of sediment mercury and water and stopping on it like you would grapes. Because you need all those little pieces of gold to touch the mercury to be able to capture it manu any miner john valdez works with mercury almost every day is north korea its just that. It. Is going to. Stick if it can use a better but i dont. Like the atom of it at. All to look at that it would ever pay for that dont know yet that the. Miners can also be exposed to mercury vapors thats because once they extract thermal go they have to burn off the mercury to get to the gold so these miners are touching mercury theyre breathing mercury one of the health of the. X. So the top american way that these miners are exposed to is extremely toxic especially when you read it. And starts to a fact that liver kidneys the digestive system and starts to affect the Central Nervous system. Today the money miners arent working because of the rain but john bubbas showed the equipment he used just 2 days ago to burn mercury off a piece of gold. Everything weve been saying its for this is about 3 grams of gold which translates into 100. 00 which the average worker here could make in about 3 days. Thats a lot of money. The average for worker makes less than 200. 00 a month that lure of gold is changing the face of the amazon as jungle is replaced by mining camps like this magnets for crime underage prostitution and poverty. Symbols of gold at any cost. In 2013 hunting images of the toll illegal mining had taken on the proving amazon went viral the video was taken by the carnegie airborne observatory a high tech plane developed by greg as nerve from the carnegie Institutions Department of global ecology. What is it about these mining activities that are so destructive from lets say from an environmental perspective 1st coal miners not only remove the forest to go down below the soil surface down into what would be called the mineral soil below the biologically active part of the soil so deep in the soil that there isnt a science to tell us that theres forest could ever recover. From the devastation exposed from above was dramatic but it was also only part of the story the aircraft but south fitted with all sorts of Cool Technology but how did you use some of that technology to 0 in on what was happening in terms of gold mining yeah one of the key technologies on board the plane is a Laser Imaging system what it does is we fire laser beams out of the bottom of the plane the lasers can penetrate all the way down to the forest floor and so what we end up doing is we end up imaging the forest in very high fidelity 3 d. Most of the work that had been done on this gold mining problem was using satellites that see some of the larger mines we started finding that there was a much larger contribution from thousands of small Mining Operations that werent known and suddenly we had a problem to report the rate of gold mining expansion tripled after the 2008 local recession or if you are on a typical amazon river before seems like its intact all around you but this is that same river that we just were on in the boat. When we peel the forest back we reveal the ground which is shown on the right here and what we see here are gold Mining Operations there so by and large theyre said back from the rivers edge so that they are being executed clandestinely the observatory also has a one of a kind spectrometer which can detect chemicals in the forest below including mercury our system is unique that it can measure 420. 00 channels of light all at the same time from the ultraviolet to the visible part of the spectrum that we see in to the infrared into the short wave infrared its ability to do that gives us access to a key scientific breakthrough which is the ability to measure chemicals in the environment because chemicals shine in different wavelengths of the spectrum. This video from the observatory shows one of the large mining areas in the tunnel part a buffer zone heres how the spectrometer sees that same mining area so where its blood red thats where the mercury pollution is the most intense so its basically like a signature of contamination severe contamination and then these blue areas are porous that have no mercury in them and these are also illegal mining activities these large cleared areas all of this. Is illegal while the spectrometer can see mercury contamination from the sky Luis Ferdinand is studying where mercury goes on the ground. Where else does this mercury end up because the mercury is dumped into the rivers and lakes then gets into the food chain bacteria in the water convert the mercury into something even more toxic in organic compounds called methylmercury which is easily absorbed in the digestive system mercury unlike many other pollutants magnifies every time it goes from one link in that food chain to the next so a fish at the top of the food chain in a contaminated region can have mercury levels millions or tens of millions of times higher than the water in which they swim and where does that fish end up in many cases it ends up on the dinner plate of people that live hundreds of miles downstream. To the east for him and his and his team attested hair samples of more than a 1000 people throughout the model of the the u. S. More than 75 percent 10 levels above the limit is considered safe by the Environmental Protection agency some as high speed 33 times the limit. In this little. One. So we dont get is because. They. Can look at this in those. Millions of the time if you can vary. Over time mercury impacts the Central Nervous system it could cause problems with vision hearing and memory at high levels it can cause brain damage to unborn babies if you talk to minors you say hey this is a problem how do they usually respond usually. They dont believe because they dont see the immediate effects because the type of exposure that you see here is a chronic one. By 2012 the price of gold was over 1500. 00 an ounce in illegal mining had eaten away more than 100000 acres of proven rain forest in moderate videos alone. The peruvian government decided to get tough troops went into mining areas and camps and equipment the strikes were part of a more type wrong strategy according to her and thats stored as luna a former advisor to proof ministry of the environment the study g m involved Police Operations and the prosecution of the orse offenders and it involved. Financial intelligence to connect the dots in follow the money and see who are the big bosses to crack down led to violent clashes between miners and police but it didnt stop illegal mining they sent in the military thousands of police what impact to that its been a very temporary fleeting impact its so profitable that you can loose cover 1000000. 00 in machinery and 2 weeks later join back in business it is that profitable this strategy also includes a process of legalizing some Mining Operations outside of protected areas but only if miners can prove they have proper permits and a plan to deal with the Environmental Impact it is impossible for many of them and thats the other part if people are never going to be able to be formal to what the telephone and start dealing with the. Techno also visited prues ministry of the environment in lima so there is this formalization process how are the miners responded to this. In some way well. Not so good because sure it is more to work outside of the world for because its cheap that is why we need to have very clear ways ford will describe to me this interdiction to crack down on some of these areas how was that hours ago in some way good but on the other hand we just very difficult to maintain that kind of interdiction because we cannot do it every day so sometimes we pull out these people from the 4 b. And so on in 2 or 3 weeks there are coming back to the same place why cant you do it every day why cant you come back every 3 weeks because. Some ways to our boy michel for example in some places in the temple. They were there working by night is inside the tumble part of buffer zone it has been the target of more than one military interdiction our cameras caught this current Mining Operation at the pampa in broad daylight many of the real notable remains are allies of mine in the rug not the corruption in the one the tories want to grow by seeing the fulfillment of the law in the service we need to show to good People Better with subsidies not see if miserably fail to put enough even small parts of the start the the government approved at the moment of a total abandonment of the need should leave i left the ministry over 6 months ago wanted to leave the ministry i love the ministry because of a but. From government in terms of Environmental Standards they approved a new law that weakens the ability to of the ministry of environment to both create protected areas in go after the trans divisions i was there to help not to be part of recent soil left techno also traveled the. Into the heart of the tumble pata National Reserve its a place so protected there we had to register at 2 control stations on the way. Yet even the park guards seemed overwhelmed. No i said no us i miss him but i asked him what. We saw miners working the river just a short distance away from the 2nd control station yuri torres was our guide on this journey into the reserves he now makes his living by helping people experience the breathtaking beauty of the rainforest as he knows the rain forest so well he spots a saddleback tamarind monkey with a baby on its back during our interview but torres used to make his living off the jungle as a gold mine or one of the my there you dont really care about forest torress father and his brothers still make their living as illegal gold miners and you talk to them about the dangers about the environment yes they do its a big big deal do you worry about your father and your brothers as miners yes yes they do i or 11 real ones where family if they dont mind what i did. Was very sad its such beyond words were talking some of the most biological diverse forests there are places where you could spin to for our worse what she just whats taking place in one branch of one tree in the way the light of the sun shines some Different Things done buses but in the school way. Become better because of that i am absolutely convinced the human beings of a right nature it makes us stronger. And so phil youve traveled a lot and done a lot of research in that region but this was the 1st time that you had seen this and been to these areas how did it affect you emotionally ive seen it from the plane and you tell my flying to this area and ive always heard about it but to actually see it firsthand was unbelievable really made me want to do something and make sure that people know how big of an issue this is i have to tell you to feel i mean just learning about this strikes a very emotional chord for me too because this is my part of the world not peru but bolivia and bolivia part of this equation here i mean there is a lot of mining activity gold mining in bolivia as well but the issues that are going on with the magnitude of the illegal activity in peru has been spilling over into bolivia so theres a lot of gold contraband thats going through people to get water and were getting export it kind of under the radar which is really really crazy its a huge issue about cars about 3 1000000000. 00 an ounce of gold going through believe you huge amount is this similar to or more complicated than say blood diamonds like as a consumer what can i do to make sure im not contributing to the problem if i wear gold jewelry you know the advantage of the diamond problem it is just this dress to go on the ground but you can actually track it down and you can figure out based on its chemistry where it came from with gold its a lot more difficult to do because a lot of the gold gets exported it gets all melted together so you could have gold from prove mixed with gold from croatia and all of that could make a necklace found that story really opened my eyes so thank you for that really sobering but important be sure to check it so next time during techno is we bring you more. We begin with breaking news out of the g. 7 summit in france irans foreign minister divides or if its made an unexpected visit to be out it he was just in france a few days ago meeting with president emmanuel my craw hes been trying to revive that nuclear deal that the u. S. Pulled out of last year a little moment will speak to beg for reaction from tehran but 1st lets go to james spays in beer its so james its been a long day a lots been flying around what do we know is on the agenda of the reef right now. Well we understand he is right now in a meeting with the French Foreign minister word of his arrival here 1st floated around reporters when we noticed flight tracking websites showing that the Iranian Foreign minister this plane had landed in berets that was about 2 and a half hours ago confirmation coming from the iranian side about an hour and a half ago saying that he was here at the request of the French Foreign minister for talks no formal word officially on the record from the french and of the g 17 here its worth telling you the president is supposed to be attending a News Conference along with chancellor merkel and others that is a little delayed right now hes bound to be asked about it there what appears from the Little Information we have to be the order of events is as you remember mamma job with the reef walls in paris on friday he was there with president macro they had a discussion he flew back to tehran we understand that the final go ahead for him to come on here to bear it for talks was given on saturday night that suggests to me the likelihood that this was discussed because we know there was an iran session at the 4 informal dinner of all the g 7 leaders that took place in berets lighthouse here on saturday evening it would seem likely to me that there the g 7 leaders discussed the idea of him visiting and gave the go ahead that suggests to me that President Trump is certainly not been surprised by any of this its worth telling you that the iranian side have made it quite clear that their foreign minister is not going to be meeting the u. S. Delegation who have no meetings with u. S. Officials and i can tell you that is a decision in the iranian system above the Foreign Ministers paygrade that would need to be. Approved by the president the Supreme Leader but certainly an important meeting taking place here at a venue where the u. S. Is president s present president s so even the possibility of what they call the diplomacy proximity talks one meeting going on while other people are consulted about that meeting and can have input into that meeting its an unexpected but very Important Development ok without trying to get you to read too much into the crystal ball but the fact that as you mention the proximity the fact that the u. S. President is there does that indicate that the u. S. Is that at least on board with what other g. 7 members might be trying to negotiate with iran right now. While the u. S. Is positioned as you know sammy ever since they pulled out of the Iran Nuclear Deal has been maximum pressure this doesnt really fit into that overall strategy we know there are different voices on iran in the administration we know there are hardliners like the National Security advisor john bolton and to an extent the secretary of state might pompei o so not clear whether there was a unified view on this but for now it seems that the u. S. And i really dont think its possible that this could have happened without the u. S. At least saying we have no objection are fine with these talks taking place in exactly the same place that President Trump is currently remember President Trump has as been proved on north korea doesnt mind the element of surprise in diplomacy hes certainly used it himself with regard to north korea so maybe hes bought into a similar idea from president macro. All right thanks so much james bays there lets continue this conversation with baggage joins us live from the iranian capital so as what is the iranian line on why divides is going to the g. 7 summit. Well james just mentioned the different voices within the American Administration in regards to iran well theres many different voices within iran. In regards to this nuclear deal and as divides the reefer said this is not the perfect deal but it is the best deal they may have been even voices for that within the European Countries about this deal not being the best deal in even the u. S. Administration at the time of this deal but want to acknowledge is that it worked and at the time it was the best deal now for president rouhani he has staked his reputation on this because there are those within iran that have been opposed to this they have also always maintained that the United States cannot be trusted that eventually they would pull out or change the goalposts and thats exactly whats happened the last year they impose sanctions on iran theres been increased tensions on the strait of hormuz and the problem for president rouhani is that he has been criticized inside this country for chasing or pursuing that policy and this now these discussions taking place not only to salvage the deal they not only to save irans economy but the save the reputations of those political leaders in iran that backed negotiations that backed this policy that back this nuclear deal so there will be people in this country that are waiting and hoping that something emerges that somehow the European Countries can manage to open up irans economy so iran iran irans Banking Sector can trade and also so that iran can trade its oil but there will be those that will look at this with skepticism and say no matter whats agreed with the European Countries the main test of the United States and if they still decide not to engage if they still decide to unilaterally impose those sanctions that theres not much that can be done. 7 leaders also met to discuss traders concerns are growing about the trade war between the u. S. And china trump has dismissed reports of any rifts at the summit saying hes getting along well with the other 6 leaders but in a separate meeting with the u. K. s Prime Minister barak he showed no sign of backing down from that trade war with. President ial aspirations allow them to get away with the billions of dollars every year with severe injuries. Only theyre not really. Part of. The complaints about everything joshua is a senior fellow for the Global Economy and development at the Brookings Institution he joins us by skype from washington d. C. Good to have you with us lets start with got a bunch of us related trade issues going on lets start with the issue of the u. S. And japan have they reached or resolved at least their trade issues this year 7 summit. He tried to shoot the story in the context of a porsche driving contractions the comprehensive pretty frightening the. Situation in the us is that the Agricultural Sector in particular it hides flies from scratch policies really from giants won and this is likely in the trash and to the quiet. Busy state that and provide immediate access for busy u. S. Exports back recalled products into japan before they move forward to address some of them all the issues are and the services to pass on to spain the resistance of the is but i think is the same should come around to the notion of. Agriculture if that get a commitment from us that will avoid any our fiscal ation army imports of autos and all the properties of its labors need to consider and that has been the focus of discussion last with what she said it looks like progress has been made the other will be a small deal around the specific issues which will bend the light the more comprehensive free trade negotiations. I didnt see defense the direction us japanese trade relations are having well i have any impact on the mega dispute which is between the us and china of course. You know that not not specifically that this is. Just going to ratchet up and get the chinese have i think clearly my decision that they are going to try to wipe out the Trump Presidency and see what happens in elections next year and whether or not from if the film didnt deal with success i think is that you in china trump cannot be trusted if they manage to do a deal then stick to it and so. Its simply going to play this out its likely were going to see escalating tarrants of the same the chinese and now its good and some u. S. Imports truckers do that on chinas exports and this could actually still alive and down for investment counselor as well. Horowitz what about when it comes to the u. S. U. K. Trade relationship we saw very positive statements a lot of praise being exchanged between Boris Johnson and donald trump is that the thing that that one should take seriously from that i think the seriousness if that is the living goal level desire to deal without a real sense of challenges that will be confronted once. The changes that could set out and stop working through each. Promise and johnson sort of indicated that culture. In the u. S. Market is going to be on clearly thats going to be a very common p. D. Issue of us and thats just the beginning but even before i get into the house what we have all of a mechanic is that he has got the car out of work and i think shes going to be before we have any sense of the ability that new green to come were going to try to do with us. And finally when it comes to the e. U. Doing expect a trade war to be ratcheting up to the u. S. And the e. U. Of everything from taxes on Digital Products to wine. So theres a specific trade issue at the moment concerning the decision by france to impose. Its injury taxes on exports to france or by Multinational Companies which the u. S. Is the meat of the scene or they believe is the spirit tree and consistent with frances and the. Commitment
