Least used and i that was difficult to see either couldnt be a hard bargain a different jurisdictions that have different customs arrangements different taxation i raise ones different i regularly since concerning it always had the health and checking of i grew cultural projects etc etc that to monitor all this there would have to be some sort of installations across the i was part or were goods traveling back and forth are examined now the a odd thing about it is that is that the British Government on the bar has johnson says that they will not use any restrictions or any cost them as installations along the border on the u. K. Say different i and that would mean that about the European Union which would have. A hard border and this is a chaotic situation because both sides are saying there will be no hard bark but its very difficult for any rational observer to see how there could not be a hard border with all the implications that would how politics in ireland north on size Israeli Forces have killed 3 palestinians in the gaza border and injured another dozens of palestinians protested on the streets of gaza after the men were killed israel says people trying to break through the border fence somebody fired on by a helicopter and a tank every force it is following the story from west jerusalem. Well Gazas Health Ministry is confirming these deaths the Israeli Army Says that it used an attack helicopter and tank fire to fire on a group of armed men near the border between the border fence between gaza and israel are reporting inside gaza suggests from hamas sources that these were 2 Islamic Jihad members and one member of hamas but that they werent acting in some kind of coordinated sanctioned way that this was some kind of a freelance individual operation and that has been the narrative coming from hamas which is in control of the gaza strip for a number of these sorts of incidents that weve seen in recent weeks just last weekend there were 4 armed men who were killed in a similar area near the border fence by israeli fire on or was the 1st there was a man who got inside israeli territory and fired on Israeli Soldiers injuring 3 of them he too was shot dead in the narrative coming from hamas has been that this is a case of angry armed men who are acting by themselves out of a sense of anger and frustration with the Current Situation inside the gaza strip now as well as this incident last night we saw 3 rockets being fired out of the gaza strip 2 of those a deceptive one of those falling inside israeli territory thats the 2nd night in succession that we have seen rocket fire coming out of gaza so there is a sense of a worsening security situation going on and perhaps no coincidence that we are in the run up to the israeli election on september the 17th certainly ahead of the april election there was a raising of the temperature in terms of the kind of activity coming out of gaza rocket fire and the rest of it so potentially were seeing another flare up in the initial stages thousands of people in the bangladeshi capital homeless after a big fire swept through a slum that began on friday evening in dhaka me a poor area and for firefighters several hours to extinguish no deaths have been reported though some people were injured. Possibly so but im very im very worried that in this highly politicized environment that these laws if it acted could be used in a way to violate Civil Liberties on either the left or the right but the right is the biggest risk right now and thats where the fatalities have been although Going Forward who knows very volatile political season and we see hate crimes of Political Violence rise going into these kind of seasons. This is al jazeera these are the top stories so far hundreds of thousands of antigovernment protesters marched into the national hongkong on sunday as one of the citys biggest rallies since close to 2000000 people gathered in june demonstrators of cap Victoria Park near capacity all day and a gathering approved by the police and they also marched without permission through the city under thomas has been speaking to the protest organizers. The number they say is 1700000 in Victoria Park where i am in tin how in the suburbs to the east of here and in causeway bates the west and i say that doesnt include hundreds of thousands that then marched on to admiralty at the central where many many tens of thousands still are now now we have to be a little cautious with this number because this number is given by the organizers so its likely to be on the high side and the place when they release their number later on monday will no doubt have a lower number overall nevertheless the organizers a saying that despite to wrench right at the beginning of this rally here Victoria Park and pretty. Steady rain all throughout the day on sunday the numbers that have come to this rally and unauthorized march exceed those that they saw in june families started burying the bodies that of those killed in a suicide bomb attack on a wedding reception in the capital of afghanistan 63 people are dead 200 others were injured i saw has claimed responsibility. Is resistance. In akra people are grabbing social and political issues by the horns. And time to sing creativity. And protest to challenge and change ideas. Gonna controversial a witness documentary on aljazeera. This is techno innovations that can change lives the subjects of biden told wired were going to explore the intersection of hardware and humanity were doing in communities where. This is a show about science polling out by scientists tonight techno one very. To gates deep ivory trail theyve tried to seize it. Bernie but nothing has stopped the terrible trade in the legal ivory. No. New tools straight from the lab that could find a crime thats brought elephants to the brink of extinction and getting a seizure is a great victory but that owns already dead. Murray to davis and is an environmental biologist i am holding a tray of an elephant who should show us the high tech plan to stop the killing. And then celine stranded along the california freeway yes freeway doctor should do some more is a mechanical engineer chill show us whats been done to find on why this is happening at this stage today feeling distressed and im still taurus im an entomologist vamps our team plenty. Know its do some science. While going to techno on phil toys joined by marie to davison and doctors should do some more because there were outlaws out there who are working in the shadows committing horrible acts against the pencil is yet majestic animals were talking about the ivory poachers who have decimated the populations of elephants in africa and its really a nominee because ive read guys for about a 1000. 00 a pound was more valuable than an Illegal Drugs and you know what that means is that the damage has been devastating over 100000 elephants have been killed in just the last 3 years and the question is what can we do about it we found a team of scientists that are using some unexpected weapons d. N. A. And radiocarbon dating check it out. April 18th 2015. Customs intercepts 4 tonnes of ivory smuggled in being sacks from the democratic republic of congo. It is the largest seizure in this countrys history to ivory on the way to laos season in bangkok after a tip the seizure makes headlines thai customs displayed over 3 tons of confiscated african ivory worth 6000000 dollars a historic average from kenya and. Knowing 100 elephants but the perpetrators of this horrible crime against animals are never caught for Law Enforcement entities like interpol stopping the killing of elephants at the source is whats critical. The question ends where exactly is all this ivory coming from they almost always shipped the ivory out of a different country from where it was poached because thats where you start your search looking in the wrong place sam wasser is the director of the center for conservation biology at the university of washington. When it comes to solving the mysteries of the illegal trade wasser has created a coalition of scientists virtual detectives using techniques in d. N. A. From ivory. Genetic mapping through dung sampling and radiocarbon dating this multipronged approach attacks a criminal enterprise thats brought the majestic African Elephant to the brink of extinction and theres probably only 450000. 00 elephants left so the whole focus of our lab is to really try to use d. N. A. Assignment of large. Singapore 2000 to 6 and a half tons of ivory seized the largest in the countrys history roughly 650 elephants were killed for this haul of ivory. But where in africa did the ivory originate from they assume this much ivory must come from multiple sources authorities sense to wasser is lab for analysis right now. From anywhere in africa we can assign a seizure of ivory closer than 300 kilometers to where it came from washer and his team get to work the 1st step is to prepare the samples of seized ivory. We cut off a piece of the ivory and then leave we do is we stick that piece inside a plastic tube with a magnet and stainless steel plugs on the end we drop it in liquid nitrogen which cools it to about minus 240. 00 degrees celsius so extremely cold within 3 minutes it comes out like baby powder. So its the ivory and it preserves the d. N. A. At the same time that was one of the biggest breakthroughs of our. Elephant d. N. A. From the ivory seized in singapore is extracted and analyzed in last years lab the d. N. A. From the tusks is then matched against a genetic reference map of africas elephant populations this map has been generated by d. N. A. Taken from another source rich in elephant d. N. A. I am holding a tray of elephant coop not exactly something youd associate as a tool for fighting International Crime but these samples provide critical pieces of data for creating a genetic map of elephants across africa yup collecting dung samples may not be glamorous work but its a task wasser and his team take seriously we make the map from the dung we take genetic markers out of the dung samples so you see here this map of africa theres about 1400. 00 total samples here and each sample is from a separate family group loesser was able to determine the origin of the 6 and a half tons of ivory seized in singapore and shipped out of malawi it all came from a neighboring country zambia. Washers team had made a discovery that would revolutionize Law Enforcements approach to poaching basically the study debunked some of the assumptions that you and interpol had about how these activities were working what were those assumptions and so as assumptions that Law Enforcement in general had and one was when you get a big seizure they were cherry picked from all over africa and what we showed is thats not whats happening there poached in the same area over and over and over again. The plight of the African Elephant has been well documented these heartbreaking images were shot in a sanctuary for elephant orphans in kenya from before the biggest enemy of elephants when the out in the woods on this 2 year old being bottle fed stood by his mothers body for 3 days after she was murdered for her tusks the 1st to kill the bowls and then you killed the matriarch so now youre destroying the leadership in your group as well as the long term knowledge that these elephants have and when elephants become vulnerable so does the rest of the ecosystem there are these keystone species where you take this one out and it has this huge Ripple Effect on all these other species elephants are true keystone species. Sophisticated transnational syndicates oversee every step of the trade from the illegal poaching to the smuggling of tusks to carving factories and shops around the world. This footage part of an undercover investigation captures a shipping agent explaining how ivory is smuggled out of africa very cold war. We need an urgent method that stops the killing even getting a seizure is a great victory but the owners are already dead. Last month singaporean customs seized another shipment of ivory coming out of kenya and headed for vietnam 3. 00 tons worth an estimated 8000000. 00 singaporean authorities have already contacted wasser to oversee d. N. A. Analysis was used lab and now receive samples from over 90 percent of all marj ivory seizures what we are trying to really do is to figure out where are the major poaching hotspots across africa his latest study based on d. N. A. Analysis of 28 seizures between 19062014 reveals there may be only 2 major hotspots. For poaching in africa southern tanzania and a place known as the try them. When youre saying hotspots you mean hot spots of poaching activity hotspots of seizure activity what are you referring to a hot spot is a place where you are able to provide multiple tons of ivory repeatedly over multiple years then we have a place we can focus Law Enforcement on take those out and perhaps choke the source of the ivory from entering the network and unravel it so thats the big plan. A techno crew member is on vacation in thailand when he comes across this all too common display hes told of their ivory pieces offered up for sale for a price the sale of ivory to foreigners is illegal in thailand yet as our camera reveals it goes on as this old newsreel footage shows ivory was once very popular. Kroft that center is owed but all that changed in 1990 when the International Trade in ivory was made illegal. D. N. A. Analysis is one tool that could ultimately help governments crackdown on where ivory is coming from but it cant tell investigators when the killing took place anything postin is illegal to trade what it comes down to is this this radio carbon dating method can tell us if trade of ivory is legal or not kevin you know is a geochemist who uses a method known as radiocarbon dating to determine the age of ivory this is the part of the tusk that was actually growing when the animal was shot because we need to know when did this elephant die and so this part of the tusk tells us that so we drove the powder on to this wave paper here. And they collected into these vials next to ivory powder is combusted and turned into pure c o 2 so what is this we can bust it in this tube it theres other impurities in there other gases we need to get rid of those so that when we measure the radio carbon content we just are measuring the c o 2 gas radiocarbon dating literally relies on the fallout from the events that took place from 1952 to 1963. 1 fire. Above ground atomic testing between the United States in the soviet union we basically doubled the radio carbon concentration in the atmosphere and what does that mean then for organisms when you have a spike in radio carbon in the atmosphere what it did do is give them all the unique chemical fingerprint in their tissues all these photosynthetic organisms trees grasses that sort of thing are taking in c o 2 some of it having carbon 14 in it and in the animals that eat that then also take on that radio carbon signature look there it is you can actually see its freezing down on the right side so now were going to do is torch it off and have the final final product. As for bringing this to them and you do this individually for each sample yeah this is its time consuming its saying you want to wear these to to watch this awesome just so this is just a regular methane torch but not to be done at home and warm the glass. All around that its very like. Holding soft serve. And its unique. And now you can see. Theres our c o 2 right there thats thats the frozen c o 2 from an elephant heading for radio carbon analysis after you know receives the radio carbon content of a piece of ivory he can match it against the bomb curves a record of atmospheric levels of c 14 before and after the atomic testing era the radio carbon dating and by every could be used to verify the age of ivory being sold on the legal market as antiques but heres the bottom curve and i call this left side before 963 the rising limb so the tusk is imprinted with the radiocarbon concentration from that year so we can then go and measure that radiocarbon concentration and say ok its for example 1. 3 and that allows us to draw a horizontal line across the bottom curve here and you can see it actually intersects it into place slice to 2 answers it could be 1960 or it could be 1080 so the way to do this is to sample part of the test that you know is older and in the part of the house you know it is younger and compare the relative radiocarbon concentrations and just fit them back onto this curve so if the older one has a higher concentration in the younger has a lower than your on this falling limb of the bomb curve november 2013 canadian authorities learned that a pair of tusks are being offered by this toronto based auction house. As antiques suspecting the tusks are not as old as the sellers claim authorities confiscate them and turn them over to. Buy david a pair of tasks clearly showing that this elephant was poached after the law went into effect and the auction house went to court and pleaded guilty now you know and collaborator turi serling have teamed up with wasser to apply this technique to investigate trends in the International Trade in illegal ivory since the International Ban african countries have been stockpiling confiscated ivory occasionally they destroy some of it but much of it remains sitting in government warehouses so they have huge stockpiles on the order of 100 or 120 tons in some of these nations there so theyre sitting on this ivory waiting for the day that the International Market opens again if current poaching hotspots are shut down the next major source for ivory could be the stockpiles and radiocarbon dating would help confirm it to what extent do you wrestle with despair at the situation and to what extent do you embrace hope and there have been some seizures where i got to say you know when we pulled them out and started rinsing in often the blood was pouring out that we were just sitting there in tears i mean you know that that has happened but you know you get. Used to it and and then you start getting these breakthroughs and so no i feel like you know weve got a plan i feel like were making an impact and thats really what drives me. To steps of d. N. A. Techniques that you talk about that practice has been done for a long time to maybe track the origin of the disease what took him so long to get through tracking down poachers you know weve used d. N. A. Techniques to understand populations of lots of wildlife were using it within the context of conservation a lot more now its still a fairly new field so there was a time when ivory was used and can. And believe it pools and now its illegal but why is the market still so robots the main markets are in china and then actually the United States is the 2nd largest player here part of whats driving that is that there are some communities in the us that really value ivory iris you mostly find it as an ornamental carving its very beautiful when its polished and carved and it carries a sort of status because of its values so theres still a pretty high demand now there is a crisis unfolding on the coast of california from san diego up to San Francisco and beyond sea lions are leaving their natural ocean habitat and wandering up on shore even sometimes in peoples yards and streets while i joined a ride on my we were literally rescuing sea lion pox the story is crazy some of its heartbreaking and its coming up to. This punk named johnny cash is making a run towards the open ocean with a satellite transmitter tied to his back he might hold the on says to a sad epidemic among californias coastline. There are plenty of highways to hug californias ocean shores and hes 90 freeway isnt one of them the sight of a baby seen in a quarter of a mile inland is unsettling. But in 2015 its not that unusual according to local News Agencies the creatures are stranding starving and apparently dying in record numbers this year along the coast the images tell on haunting story well we have seen spikes and rethink years 2015 is already off to an unusually start the headlines paint a picture of an epidemic of sick pops in desperate search of food but whats really going on is more complex techno went to the san diego headquarters for a federal agency that studies the oceans. This is whats happened in the last 2 years is the waters in the northeast pacific i warmed up way beyond anything where youre still according to noah a warm up ocean off Southern California has made it hard to financing sea lions to forage and as a result the pups are not getting enough nourishment el nino is an event scientists have seen several times but this years temperature is a quite different whats really different is that the waters in the North East Pacific warmed up over a year ago and usually that warming occurs after the only no developed in this case preceded the ocean warming impacts the food chain from the bottom up as upwelling wins a causing deep water currents typically rife with cold water nutrients to circulate up mostly nutrient depleted warm water so when you talk about nutrients what is that that biologic material in the deep ocean gets remember allies tend to work in organic nutrients and so the upwelling them keeps that cycle going so how does it affect the top of the food chain the whole food chain gets depressed a lot of the those fish species that could move have moved northward and a food source theres a lot less than we had last year and the evidence can be seen daily all along the california coast from san diego to San Francisco in san diego sea world the company which face public heat for. Has taken a public role in sea lion rescue efforts. Its really a new thing i think is a lot writing yeah this how long do you feed them for typically it will be 2 painting for about 12 days and about 5 days they have gained enough strength to actually start showing some interest again a question and they will start taking water to the sea lions a facet method to an almost tree asure like setting the pups the fed a special protein which formula up to 202 feedings a day take place behind the scenes we have to gradually read about it because their bodies are so. And they cant process it properly and they have to show do as i do can i fully process 3. 00 to 5. 00 pounds of fish per day which is what they would require to maintain their weight before we stop to feeding brands to it observes sea lion health at cebu Nonprofit Research on. So in studying their habitats you able to get a better idea of whats happening in terms of Global Climate change food seem to vanish for some reason the question is whether thats a sign i think of long term Climate Change the bigger issue is are these little intensive answered were saying recently going to become more common as climate generally changes according to the National Marine Fisheries Service is the west. As rescued pups are returning starved again it is the most historically busy year ever of this argument 2500 sea lions stranded in california this year alone in the 1st 12 weeks that were into the year marine biologists and executive director of the Pacific Marine Mammal Center a key from a tosser has seen it all but. Theyre actually 6 months old coming into us under birthweight thats how starve they are the other difference in this year that we didnt see in 20132014 is that were now seeing a lot of adults coming in that are very me seated very star you can see every bone in their body and thats a difference from the last 2 years metacity and his team east satellite Titan Technology to understand why this is happening tagging sea lions is so new to these pups the Research Pioneers and we want to make sure that the animals that were putting back out into the wild during this unusually bad rush and making it tagging happens fast as i learned watching johnny cash get his device he spent 2 months gaining 25. 00 pounds and is a worthy candidate here follow that and buy your get a sandwich honestly leave the edges where were going further somewhere in the back that you know the feel good if youre going to tighten up the back will be good this year several sea lions return to metastases rehab starving once again but rescue centers along the coast compiling satellite tagging days. This hype that johnny cash and his newly released friends who beat the odds a move the line toward survival rather than the stranding. Believe that no needs and they live a long happy life thats the plan and thats whats going to help them were going to see them out on the rocks in 9 or 10 years when you begin healthy and you. Know i work a lot of behavior in my research and what i found really fascinating about this is what is causing this behavior of the popes arches going in a little bit from shore theyre going miles are going on this long journey in there so something evolved in them that the changing climate is just messing with their their innate response to temperature its more could it be just utter desperation right i mean if you reach a certain level of lack of nutrition does that suddenly kick in some sort of instinct to just go where ever necessary to find something i mean because of see the temperature its the food that they normally feed on has moved somewhere and started the seed im pops of starving and they are cold and get my they are absolutely desperate thats just thats really heartbreaking each of tonights stories showed problems with the environment but more importantly we got to meet some very smart folks trying to solve them thats it for todays episode be sure to check us out next time here on techno dive deep into these stories and go behind the scenes at aljazeera dot com slash techno follow our expert contributors on Twitter Facebook Instagram Google plus and more. Of workers a big in slaved in the british jones of india. How Satellite Technology is now helping to set them free. This is al jazeera. Elephant doha everyone im kemal sons of maria and this is the news hour from aljazeera hundreds of thousands of people to find out whether i am the government in hong kong to stage an illegal march through the city also in the news i sold says its behind an attack killed at least 63. 00 people and injured hundreds at a wedding celebration in afghanistan they didnt have much to start with now theyre left with nothing but thousands of people homeless after a slum fire in the bangladeshi capital and gibraltar says no to a u. S. Request to seize an Iranian Oil Tanker at the center of a weeks long diplomatic dispute. Is just going to leaven pm in hong kong organizers say more than 1700000. 00 antigovernment protesters have been rallying now for hours that the sunday despite the run one of the largest demonstrations is nearly 2000000 people march back in june police did give permission for the gathering at Victoria Park but did not authorize the march through the city the protest is organized by the same group that was behind junes big rallies now this was organized by the civil human rights from the same group that its organized peaceful rallies we say by the organizer bonnie young called for an end to the violence. P. P. It was to get sick. Again that. Young protesters they had no way to protest except to read the. Actions. We see that as they have always been beaten. The Victims Excessive political elite thats these young people cant grasp today we cant emphasize that. And also we hope that the feast please understand text while so they will not ask to have a peaceful day and they will explain himself feeling valid and he gets pumped milk from the bullets will be released to that as we say a little bit past 11 pm not to be appalling as our correspondents in hong kong to the very large turn out what do you tell us about where you are and whats still happening at this late hour. Right now whats happening right now is as you said those protests only got received permission to rally at Victoria Park earlier in the day we saw this massive turnout on precedented since early june and it also shows that there is still support for the young protesters here many of which many of these protests have been spontaneous that turned violent but despite that hong kong people are standing behind these young protesters where i am now is in front of the government building if i can get my camera man to turn a little bit to the left these young protesters are still Milling Around there are still a couple of thoughts about a couple of 1000 of them were told that on the other side of this building this is the government Headquarters Police have amassed there are some people that are heading home theyre being told to go home but many of these young people say theyre staying here theyre going to try and stand their ground as long as they can even if it means a confrontation with the. So at the moment quiet people just Milling Around but with the things the way things have been going in hong kong things could turn very quickly and you get the feeling to view the protesters just want to keep going theyve got momentum and they probably dont want to take the foot off the pedal stay out as late as possible stay out as much as they can keep going. You know its much more than that come all these young people by the time hong kong goes back to china and 2047 many of these young people will only be reaching middle age or having their own families theyre just creating their own future the older generation would pretty much have moved out of the mainstream population by then in the sense that these would be the young people running the city so they say that it is really important for them right now to keep this momentum going for their own future if they back down now it means that they might have lost the moment to change the governments mind they may have lost the moment to change beijing or to confront beijing so yes these young people are standing their ground they say theyre going to carry on but whether how long this can go on for is still questionable thing that schools are going to open in a couple of weeks many of these people are still schoolchildren in fact we saw an 11 year old boy here saying that hes here to protest for religious freedom so. They feel that they have a lot to lose if they stand down now and if it means standing up against the police and many of them being arrested were hearing about 700 people have been arrested in the past few weeks they say its still worth the fight ok thank you did you good pollens live in hong kong late in the evening there but as she says you could expect anything to continue happening we will be back with you later on. Right now we look at some other news and a wedding celebrations turned into a bloody disaster in afghanistans capital it was targeted by a suicide bomber on saturday in one of the worst attacks in the country this year at least 63 People Killed nearly 200 injured as well most of the guests were members of the minority Shia Community now as far as responsibility goes it is i saw which is said it was behind this attack in kabul but earlier president ashraf ghani said the taliban cannot escape blame for destabilizing the country in the 1st place that most of the bush. The targeting of our people in such events like wedding parties schools mosques markets and Public Places indicates the atrocity of a terrorist group who is determined to kill the innocent people the taliban cannot absolve themselves of blame for they provide a platform for terrorists. Has been at the hospital in kabul where many of the injured are being treated this is her report. Were outside Emergency Hospital in central kabul where dozens of people are waiting for any years of loved ones people are being firies here all night the wounded and also they did people caught up in this explosion at about 1040. 00 last night it was at a wedding for one on the street by waiting in southwest was his are waiting which is the shia minority here in afghanistan we understand that the suicide bomber at the wedding and detonated himself near the front of the stage in the main section causing many many casualties this is one of the deadliest explosions in kabul this last year we talked to one man who has sat outside this hospital oh no i waiting to him he feared people back and forth all night and he was in shock heres what he said. I was at the back of the wedding hall when suddenly an explosion happened it was very big i fell down where i was when i stood up i saw tables and people were scattered everywhere. The scene was awful my brother was injured most of my friends were killed traditionally these type of attacks claimed my eyes so the story target shia to his are a minority were going to stand in these areas so this happens in afghanistan against the backdrop of talks between the United States and the taliban the 2 sides have held regular meetings here in qatar since october as they try to end the 18 year conflict they have also been taught taking place between Afghan Taliban representatives but negotiations are complicated by a lot of things the frequent attacks the presence of eisel affiliated fighters and there is a president ial election planned for september as well so were going to talk about all of this now with johnny walsh who is a Senior Program officer on afghanistan at the United States institute of peace hes on skype from virginia nice to have you with us john is that the problem here that youve got all these different elements still going on and as the president likes to say here yes i so claimed responsibility but its part of the wider taliban problems. Well i think 1st and foremost acts like today show why there is such a thirst for peace among every sector about gun society because this is an especially or if atrocity that happened today but these atrocities are almost continual and become the most bloody conflict in the world in the last 2 years again. I think that the peace talks are the best chance to resolve this war thats existed since 2001 though its extremely complicated as you say the president ial election the existence of groups that will reject the Peace Agreement very much to include isis makes it hard but the best thing that could happen to stop these atrocities is to end the war and this is the most realistic way to do it oh ill come back to that in a 2nd but im just wondering about i thought for a moment seeing as they did claim responsibility on this one how much of a presence and an issue is i still in afghanistan because well logically we thought about us in the pastas syria and iraq. Yeah after eisel took mosul and much of western iraq in 2014 branches faisel copter and many other countries across the arab world but also outside of it one of the most significant and it turned out most enduring of those branches is the one in afghanistan its now mostly concentrated in the eastern part of afghanistan the same areas where al qaeda once holed up when it was stronger there and today eisel remains capable of launching these atrocities and it does so regularly it is also at the same time at war with the taleban very intensely on the ground and at war with the United States and Afghan Forces so its likely Strong Enough to be a threat for quite a while still. Peace agreement which will talk about cannot deal with the taliban problem but this is likely to be an ongoing threat because i still isnt immediately going anywhere and what is your take on the quote unquote Peace Process in afghanistan u. S. Taliban towards Afghan Taliban talks as well. Leading somewhere. It would certainly appear so theres theres no telling whether it will lead successfully to a comprehensive Peace Agreement which is the goal but it appears that the us and talabani are on the verge of agreement perhaps ive already reached agreement on a narrower set of issues between the 2 of them and part of the idea is that once that is agreed talks start of among afghans which is to say the taleban president and his government and other afghan leaders and those are the talks that really could define the future of afghanistan they might start quite soon if this and other and other pickups dont come and delay things but the the real the real thing to watch is when the afghans can talk and make some progress on how to govern the country in a climate of peace time together because they havent really known pace for a very long time have they i mean it would actually now that you sort of spell it out like its a completely different style of government for them almost they well there have been Little Windows of peace for example right after 2001 but in general this year we passed 40 years since since the coup in 1900 well who was in 1070 we recently passed 40 years of more or less continuous conflict and i think that afghans understand i think they almost universally want to including taliban fighters but deciding what that actually means whos in charge what kind of country is it going to be what happens to all the people who have fought who have often committed atrocities themselves is a really hard questions in any Peace Process and were really just at the very front to end result and those johnny will shocking afghanistan with us on the news thank you for your time do appreciate it thank you. Now thousands of paid
