A group of indonesians are suing their government for not doing enough to tackle air pollution in the capital jakarta the city is one of the most congested in the world and environmentalist say a petition is posing a growing risk to its residents trying to get reports. Jakarta ranked the most polluted city in Southeast Asia last year thats based on a study published by Environmental Group greenpeace and visual an app that measures air quality around the world. On thursday 31 indonesians took matters into their own hands in an attempt to compel the government to tackle air pollution. They filed a legal action against the president several cabinet ministers including the environment and Health Ministers and the governors of jakarta and to surrounding provinces. We shared our research with the government we told them this was the condition of our area but all they did was question our findings playoffs what are you using at what equipment do you use. One of the plaintiffs. Is a freelance video graphic at a keen cyclist. I use my bike when i go to most places in my lungs have to work hard im not sure what the long term impact of very pollution is but i know i cover a lot more when ive been out on my bike the biggest contributor to add pollution is traffic the air quality index or jakarta reached unhealthy levels in 24 out of the last 30 days according to data from ad visual a city of jakarta fires requires more than 60 sensors to reach the age you why there are only 6 here operated by the government i didnt say they all for want of more it seems to apply more stringent standards when it comes to measuring at quality. A q i readings are based on measurements of particulate matter of less than 2. 5 micro meters in diameter or 2. 00 the government has set the maximum daily level of that scale at 65. 00 micrograms picking the meter thats 2 and a half times more than the world health organization. Is directed general of pollution control with the Environment Ministry he says the air quality is improving citing Government Data which showed there were 20 days of good quality so far this year compared to 34 for the whole of last year. By 2025 we aim to reduce the use of personal vehicles by 30 percent that should help reduce pollution and were committed to making because use cleaner fuel. But the 31 indonesians who are taking government officials to court say thats not enough they are calling for more research more transparency and more solutions to tackle pollution. Jakarta. U. S. President has delivered an address in front of washingtons Lincoln Memorial during u. S. Suspects the iranian ship was trying to deliver or oil to syria in breach of even sanctions or those are the headlines and next up its the stream stay with us. Talked to al jazeera. Problems and besides the instability is corruption we listen. Are pushing the United States and President Trump into conflict we meet with global news makers and talk about the stories that matter just 0. And here in the stream today why are so many u. S. College students. Chatting with students and advocates about what is being done to address the problem and of course we want to hear your thoughts tweet us a stream or leave your comments on our live chat and you too could be in the stream. I stopped in my car and. I stopped on a bus couch i was very. I just didnt know what to do i dont have anyone here. For many people called age is the door to a better opportunity that opportunity doesnt always come with a roof and 4 walls according to the u. S. Department of education and 2017 there were an estimated 32000 homeless call the students in the United States so what is being done if anything to address the issue or here in our studio to discuss this day shes a recent graduate of the university of maryland Eastern Shore sarah gold for a grab shes a professor of Higher Education policy at Temple University and founder of the hopes and for College Community and Justice Barbara duffield she is the executive director for schoolhouse connection a leading nonprofit working to eradicate student homelessness and joining via skype from Chicago Illinois cornell a student at the Paul University welcome everyone to the stream its really good to have you im going to start on doms Instagram Account i have checked ahead of time so i wont embarrass a im just going to scroll down here so we can have a look. Smiley smiley beautiful locations very nice you would not know from your Instagram Account from your social platforms without looking a little bit closer than your student studying and you dont have a definite home to go home today. Can you explain a little bit more for us. Yeah i think a big part of that for me is. Understanding that the perception and i guess the dominant narrative around homelessness is is that Homeless People are smart Homeless People are dirty or not tape a bowl of of achieving. Or contributing to society and i really you know now im being more vocal about my experiences but i think for me there was always that underlying sense of shame and you know loneliness it can be kind of lonely so i didnt want anyone to look at me different and i want to show people by what im capable of achieving in the content of my character than more than just my experiences and more than just a homeless person im so much more than that. Was that at a time when you had to just come out and say i dont have any right to stay tonight and you were studying i absolutely. I have dealt with homelessness my entire life. Losing my parents at a young age my mother to addiction and my father to incarceration you know i say that i was sort of orphaned by the war on drugs. Which is the story of of many folks around the world its the same story of black and brown youth in the south side of chicago. Were going to reconnect with dom hes frozen literally because hes in Chicago Illinois and its very cold out. Back to you in just a moment exactly but picking up on that story i wanted to share this one from race a former member of the stream team and she writes in a close friend of mine lived in her car for some time in college she did great in school she was super outgoing and involved and so it was hard to notice that she was struggling she later told us after she found a place to live but they had the idea that someone could be struggling and still have a full social life on college and no one else know that theyre struggling how does that. Basically to have me. Have to press the only thing that i had to look towards to and only then i could have my name is my degree i earned it. Only that only a close member of friends knew about it in a dry to help me to best way as possible try picking up jobs and everything but when i got home. Went straight to promise place and they held a spot for me every time so i didnt really house hop from place to place but was resign and showed her into a graduate promised place tell us about the promise places a new shelter in Capitol Heights maryland so basically it housed about 10 boys and 10 girls ages 14 to 25. So the help were. In will in the try to get you on the right track but you have to work hard to get where you need to go home so this take you down. So how do you even know that a student whos going to classes turning up for school is actually talking with some way to live you know the only way that you know is ask them i mean thats the truth and i think the reason the most people dont know about this problem is theyre not asking the questions we ask students how they spend their time working and we ask if theyre studying but we dont check on them to make sure they have a roof over their heads and youd be surprised how many times a student who looks is kind of fronting like they have it together did you see did see domes instagram see how they were living his press life on instagram he absolutely is and hes doing it as he said because there are consequences to him not doing that he will be perceived as not a serious student if he does not present that front but behind the scenes the struggle thats going on is undermining their academic performance. Yeah i was thinking you know d. J. What you said about keeping your eye on the prize i think a lot of people think that because a student a person is homeless education will be less important but in fact the truth is it makes it more important because its the way out. Im so glad that youre back with us your skype froze for a minute but i wanted to give you this tweet we got from the us leon who says this is not surprising when we hear about Public Housing in places with no hot water or heating especially in the u. S. 80000 people in chicago are sleeping on the streets this winter lets examine the causes behind homelessness in the u. S. Students arent any different from the rest and so just to give our audience an idea of what people in chicago are facing right now i wanted to show this headline from the Chicago Tribune dangerous deep freeze a weather alert running list of everything thats closed in the city of chicago which is facing record breaking low temperatures. Talk to us about what its like to be a student without a dedicated place to go in a place like that. Yeah it is in a place that is so cold and place that and when i say cool they dont just mean temperature i live in the city of chicago where there are always people ready around every corner and i think were so desensitized to that fact that we sort of just hop on over them and you know go on to our jobs but theyre just like us and the reality is that that a majority of americans cant afford a 500 dollar emergency so were all close to 2 to homelessness and for me personally having slept in shelters and cars and parks my whole life. Its. Its too chilly over there pun intended but its its you know its scary and its sad and sometimes you just have to do things to survive and you have to keep going you have to keep getting that degree because you know its your only way out of poverty and not everyone has the opportunity to go to school so we need to make education a right for all regardless of income station how you judge going getting you education and then also just making sure that you know youll surviving because if you dont have a regular pace to stay or so thats huge issues as well just getting the next meal. When i come back home on the washington d. C. Have a job at waking is that whats that head since high school basically when i come home from school and they held my position so i have a little bit of change to get food in the necessities need it. Some situations kind of different but i kind of head of a little tiny bit of stability busy with money yeah so this is really important because the fact that you were able to have a job provided some help i think a lot of people assume that Homeless College students are. Homeless because theyre not working and our evidence collected over years and years shows they are they are getting Financial Aid and they are working but the fact is that Financial Aid pays far less than it used to work pays far less than it used to and so its possible to be using all these forms of support and still not making ends meet i want to pick up on the idea of food because some College Students are facing so much and Food Insecurity is a part of that so i wanted to show you this this is from the chronicle of Higher Education and this is Frankie Frankie is a student and he also represents 2 year and technical College Students in minnesota and he talked to the stream about the issue he sees as the problem money was for you to see in the reason that we are facing homelessness in Food Insecurity on our campus is because of the high cost which often students have to make a choice whether theyre going to classical greek where theyre going to work to pay off their Student Loans and. With students who should come with in the classroom and right now are students are being graded on how well you can and almost. So there he talks about of course the high cost of tuition and barbara how do you go about addressing a vat because that doesnt seem like its changing anytime soon and there are there are macro issues and there are micro issues and one of the Biggest Challenges that we see is yes are the higher cost the Financial Aid doesnt pay for all of the cost the cost of attendance etc but also for students who are experiencing homelessness particularly under aged 24. But just getting Financial Aid is a challenge so we see over and over and over again calls from youth who cant document their homelessness who are being told to go stay in a shelter if one exists to find evidence of a primal death certificate or some other documentation of their homelessness in order to get Financial Aid so thats one major challenges is just even to be able to get what you have what you are entitled to by your by virtue of your income if you are experiencing homelessness and you dont have a parent and youre under age 24 thats a hurdle right there i guess what im finding really interesting is how many students and then colleges are working out we need to do something i want to show you something which is the brewing shelton this is in california and you can see what some students and i call each state to get together and help their students who dont know have you dont have any way to live have a look. Sure pastor here paul of the church in san marcos california we are the proud polish the ram be willing to show. You and shelter because we became very aware of a dire need at u. C. L. A. We found that there were never still sleeping in odd places on earth is a place where it seems like people who are just like me are just trying to get an education you cant really do that safely and of living in fear of their own seat on top of having to. Say im just beginning to wonder if more and more colleagues are realising how many of their students dont know where theyre going to sleep i think that there is a growing awareness of colleges and thats partly because theres been more data generated to help them understand it but i do want to point out that the bruins shelter was not created by u. C. L. A. The bruins shelter was created by a student and the student activists and they did it with their own money i mean the student who created that did it by not using money his parents were giving him and putting it aside for other people these are Charitable Solutions the student generated in the powerful but they are not Systemic Solutions to the problem that were facing right i mean we didnt see u. C. L. A. Decide to create more Affordable Housing for their students we didnt see them increase and create a new Scholarship Program to cover students housing right we didnt see changes at the state policy level to make it so there were incentives for developers to create Affordable Housing for low income students what we saw were students taking care of each other which is great but with the numbers that were looking at its a bandaid. So i wanted to share one story n. A few solutions that he tweeted us this is from Jose Rivera Perez who says i came from puerto rico to pursue education at Brooklyn College my 1st year i was homeless for a few months i had no place to live and i often had no money to eat one entire week i was outside living in the street until someone allowed me to stay in his apartment i was grateful because at least i was able to find a place to sleep for 2 years on the floor because this person had no space in his apartment and he goes on to say though as a recommendation for what should happen in future a way that colleges can start is by their staff being empathetic with individuals having hardship often i shared my experience with my professors and staff but received no empathy for my circumstance theres been a can you talk to us about the struggle in the hurdle of making sure the people on campus hear you hear your struggle and then do something about it. So basically i reached out. My pride to kind of get to me it got to me maybe like the 1st year but then after a while while. I found out that can go to school for free to wish a waiver so i had to reach out to the school had mentors there help me get a waiver for the house so the money for to. That back and i was hoping me get food and everything it wont change in that year what was it about the 1st year to the 2nd year that you said im actually going to go reach out for help. Then i want to show going anymore i just wanted to try to help other people to know that theres more people and i know some people to that went to the same stuff but we all came together kind of in everything we needed from food we needed laundry detergent is one of those. Money for laundry we hope that they can im going to show you a graduation picture right here the world is going to see it right now when you look at that picture. Right there you go what do you say i was. Through 4 years debt free he. Did not get me. So proud of the hurdle but out. It was the me are remarkable i was actually pregnant with my daughter in a picture so. Really see. My capping are going to show everybody you can any day now happen to you determine your fate you do it at the ex for help if you need it ask for help you survive dom going to go back to Instagram Account i love this picture here of you with. Bernie sanders here u. S. Senator and coupling that some time ago. Currently in that picture we have a tweet way hes talking about why if we can put 700000000000 a year into the military why cant we i the lowest student debt or make public colleges and universities jewish and free if that actually happened would we not hear stories like yours and like deja nays and many other thousands of students who are struggling just to stay in school because they dont have somewhere to stay and they dont have enough food to eat but that will that be a game changer. Oh i asked absolutely and that was a huge reason why i supported Bernie Sanders and why now i support alexandra. Critelli and the shoes and plan to tax the wealthiest in our country to ensure that all people who want to have a Higher Education or to learn a trade have the right to do so and its not just a privilege for a wealthy few i think kids essential that we not only some spending so much in the military but also. Abolish student debt i mean we bailed out the banks in 2008 when they crashed our conning me with their greed and recklessness i think its time for our students and young people to get a bailout so that they dont face a death sentence their entire lives. Picking up on that i want to share this comment we just got on you tube someone writes in that its not surprising that College Students end up homeless because postsecondary programs price gouge them left and right its difficult to maintain Affordable Housing in a living while then keeping up with that so one more experience there but barbara i want to go to you with a solution potentially this is jose who i read a little bit earlier he says colleges can build partnerships with social Service AgenciesGovernment Human Services businesses and Community Based organizations to connect students with various forms of Services Financial help and good paying jobs you see that happening in places we definitely do we see some network starting you know theres a pipeline into college homelessness and that is high school homelessness many Students Experience homelessness and high school and there is a system indicate 12 system youve got a point person a liaison whos charged with connecting all the dots between communities that has not been yet translated fully to Higher Education so we do see states taking taking that idea of having a designated liaison or person at institutions of Higher Education and they they they then become the person to connect with Community Services to connect with housing connect connect with food and to connect with that pipeline to college homelessness which is everything that happened before. Of you talking to travel know from the daily show people can go online and see talks about Food Insecurity and students and student homelessness is this issue i know you. All talking about it right now is this issue being talked about enough do people know that students are struggling its growing i mean i can absolutely tell you that the number of people who are in the high powered positions of leadership is absolutely growing the number of programs is growing too you know i want to highlight that the Chicago Housing authority has a Remarkable Partnership with the city colleges of chicago where they understand that the best way to support people who are current. Living in Public Housing or using vouchers the best way to support them to really make them economically secure is to help them get through college and theyre doing things for example like when a student is living in Public Housing and theyre in the city colleges of chicago and theyve lost their Financial Aid maybe because of their grades or because its time doubt theyre stepping up to pay their tuition i think thats remarkable and thats a game changer and weve seen programs like that coming out of los angeles and coming out of tacoma and so we are seeing some promising practices and i think we have a long way to go but you know to even see the faculty wake up i get emails every day from faculty who say we want to do better by students like these but we dont know how and you have to tell us where the resources are you have to help us get trained and some of them by the way say you know im an adjunct and i live in my car too and so we have a big problem here right this is not going to be a one off if these wonderful students are struggling and the people who teach them are also not making a living wage the truth is that public Higher Education as an entire system is being starved of the resources it needs i would also say to you that you know we its not as though the chicago tacoma albany. You know you see at long beach lots of institutions are doing something so what were trying to do is to collect those best practices whether its identifying students housing Students Community partnerships student parents and really collecting those best practices so thats one piece that weve tried to play is really so that institutions and communities dont have to reinvent the wheel they can see what others are doing thats great and we have an active conversation both barbarous organization and my organization and others lead an active conversation online that hash tag real college where those organizations and leaders at whatever talk about the stuff that theyre doing because theyre actually kind of invisible too and the students come in and they say heres what i need and another program says i can do that and some entrepreneur jumps in and says im willing to find a solution what we do. I dont have yet to be honest though are the folks with the big money the really wealthy foundations the really powerful senators who control the committees theyre not yet paying attention but i promise you they will soon very big money and ill go to you with this but you mention big money and so it really begs the question that a lot of that big money is going in other directions but still on College Campuses i want to give you an example of this art here and you have our motivation sarah from my humble vantage for the causes of this are rising tuition amid the warfare and stagnant levels of Financial Aid to name a 3 a few and he goes on to explain what a minute he warfare is it refers to newer dorms that have gyms cetera that have raise the costs of Campus Housing beyond market rates only a good deal in a few major urban markets and bad when forced to be housed on campus and other so this idea of beautiful looks serious dorms that have the state of the art equipment they have gems those are the things that some people feel they deserve on College Campuses and here in the u. S. College is often seen as a privilege and not a right so there are obstacles here that youre up against how do you tackle those. I think it and everyones kind of been talking about this since its really human izing issue and having young people or people struggling in general parking about their experiences because the fact is this is a hidden crisis and college is at the end of the day our business and dont really want to highlight this because the fact is homeless students cant always pay their their tuition so i think its understanding the root causes of homelessness its understanding that when health care is not a right in this country. And that Mental Illness you know attributes to homelessness so much what i think about here is chicago the Cook County Jail is that the Largest Mental Health facility one of the largest in the country that is just unconscionable when i think about you know the how the Prison Industrial Complex and mass incarceration attributes to the homelessness my father was incarcerated and you know that just led to me becoming homeless and alone and thats the case for so many people its its really understanding that the root causes and once we have a cultural shift and greater empathy in our society i think that we can finally. Student protesters in hong kong say they will hold talks with leaders but only in full public view. Donald trump raises the u. S. Military in a rare independent state speeches jets flying overhead but his opponents accuse him of politicizing celebrations. Now an agreement has been reached between saddams ruling military and a coalition of opposition and protest groups to share power during a transition period leading up to elections a mediator from the African Union says a council will be set up with rotating leadership between the military and civilians this will last for about 3 is that also known to whats described as a transparent and independent investigation into recent violent events. We would like to reassure all the Political Forces and military movements as well as all the youth the men and women involved in this transition that this is a comprehensive agreement that doesnt exclude anyone and reflects the aspirations of the entire sudanese people. This agreement paves the way for the creation of Transitional Authority used to choose should and that will implement Political Economic and social reforms one of the most important priorities of this government will be to ensure peace and calm. Thora and transparent investigation into the killing of protesters and bringing the killers to justice. Well as word of the deal got around many sudanese took to the streets but this time in jubilation rather than in protest youre looking at pictures from khartoum where people are celebrating the power sharing agreement. Well heres a reminder of just how we reached this point after weeks of protests against his rule the military removed president Omar Al Bashir in a coup on april 11th the generals then set up a Transitional Council while the mass sit in continued outside the Army Headquarters protest leaders held talks with the jointer they agreed on a 3 year transitional period to democracy but talks syrian broke down over who would lead to that joint Transitional Government the military wanted a soldier to be in charge but protesters demanded it be led by civilians and then on june 3rd Security Forces raided the protest camp outside the Army Headquarters killing more than 100. 00 people and injuring hundreds more all contacts between the 2 sides was shut down talks then finally resumed on wednesday after intense mediation by ethiopian and African Union envoys well lets speak to Ashraf Muhammad ali hes a protester who is joining us live now from khartoum ashraf let me start by asking you just how happy you are with this agreement. Good morning actually very happy to reach this level of. Political political to bridge im very good at it so its a good move everybody. But i dont want to be critical about about a year or about the comprehensive agreement i just want to they say that important actually to see. The deployment vision of this agreement on the ground because all the things that. We have been doing the last month would prove that this isnt really seriously seriously want to deliver or give because of the power to do it so actually to actually have an a dream and you dont its ok its a good thing so really im actually really. Happy but i want to see some implementations on the ground thatll help us after a number of people have pointed out that the agreement is less than was what was on the table initially before the massacre took place outside on the head coachs service sensually the opposition has potentially lost ground. Is there any agreement within the opposition that they are unified in their acceptance of this deal. I believe that i need any kind of full. Agreement. This to get about previous events that have taken place in cookeville going to be just. Like worth the paper. Of the agreement because these people have suffered for 30 years after. You. Defamed the previous tribune have been playing which is suppressing the people and forcing them by force to. Follow follow follow whatever. Some of. Their. Decisions arent even h. H. S. But is if we are going to make it such a group of people so we need to see some of the some of the. Some of the even porton things including those who kill those who. Want. To give a shit about all these things so any school. Doesnt include a religious tradition to be satisfying to the dissidents people and the thing you want to have a civilian government with. Authority and so far was what we were going to do with a 5 minute. Fine minute. Or 30 so here is the thing that once was. Meant to show the 1st saw the actual my deck suing tell us about the composition of the skull and instead where potentially going to say honest. Conditional council because one of the big sticking points of the inclusion of him its he who is at the moment the deputy of the Transitional Military Council that allegedly nejat the attacks on protesters outside the the Army Headquarters is the protest movement happy with him being involved Going Forward and given that the military i believe is going to take the 1st round of leadership over the council and they happy with that too. Because they believe. Some compromises. The freedom to declare ition is freedom and change made. About. Our. Image. But its a clue because to the. Leader virtue because all of all of the massacre. Everyone or the history of this particular person to some other people this person took the fight of the people of the collapse of the previous 2 proving benches and if you like that and. You can actually move or actually. Do the. Police force its always the military forces. The most. People who make compromises isnt. Necessary. About the government but. Reality. Everything. If you want to make it. Was to. Live or learn to know. A good. Old country the war in the war. Room where i. Moved to but of. All of the. Demand of support. From saudi arabia and the emirates. Just got me a really complicated. Political. Different from everything. Ashraf im going to let you get back to their celebrations in khartoum Ashraf Mohammad ali that a protester joining us live from counting.
